This letter reports on a search for $ν_μ\to ν_e$ transitions by the MINOS experiment based on a \unit[$3.14\times10^{20}$]{protons-on-target} exposure in the Fermilab NuMI beam. We observe 35 events in the Far Detector with a background of $27\pm 5 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 2 {\rm (syst.)$ events predicted by the measurements in the Near Detector. If interpreted in terms of $ν_μ\to ν_e$ oscillations, this 1.5 $σ$ excess of events is consistent with $\sin^{2}(2θ_{13})$ comparable to the CHOOZ limit when $|\delmsq{}|$=\unit[2.43$\times 10^{-3}$] {${\rm eV^{2}}$} and \sinsq{23}=1.0 are assumed.
The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment's Far Detector has been operational since July 2003, taking cosmic ray and atmospheric neutrino data from its location in the Soudan Mine Underground Lab. Numerous neutrino-induced muons have been observed. The detector's magnetic field allows the first determination by a large underground detector of muon charge and thus neutrino versus anti-neutrino on an event by event basis.
We report the first direct observation of muon antineutrinos in the MINOS Far Detector in the current muon-neutrino dominated beam. The magnetic field of the detector is utilized to separate muon neutrinos and antineutrinos event-by-event by identifying the charge sign of the muon created in charged-current interactions. We present preliminary results on the muon antineutrino oscillation parameters as well as limit on the fraction of neutrinos that disappear and reappear as antineutrinos. We also discuss the prospect of the measurement when the polarity of the magnetic focusing horns will be r…
The magnetized MINOS Near Detector, at a depth of 225 meters of water equivalent (mwe), is used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio. The ratio of observed positive to negative atmospheric muon rates, using 301 days of data, is measured to be 1.266+/-0.001(stat.)+0.015/-0.014(syst.). This measurement is consistent with previous results from other shallow underground detectors, and is 0.108+/-0.019(stat. + syst.) lower than the measurement at the functionally identical MINOS Far Detector at a depth of 2070 mwe. This increase in charge ratio as a function of depth is consistent with an i…
A high significance observation of two muon signals, the shadow of the sun and moon, have been seen by the \unit[5.4]{kt} MINOS Far Detector, at a depth of \unit[2070]{mwe}. The distribution of angular separation of muons near the moon was well described by a Gaussian, which was used to determine the angular resolution ($0.34^{\circ}\pm0.07^{\circ}$) and pointing ($0.3^{\circ}\pm0.05^{\circ}$) of the detector.
The complete 5.4 kton MINOS far detector has been taking data since the beginning of August 2003 at a depth of 2070 meters water-equivalent in the Soudan mine, Minnesota. This paper presents the first MINOS observations of muon neutrino and muon anti-neutrino charged-current atmospheric neutrino interactions based on an exposure of 418 days. The ratio of upward to downward-going events in the data is compared to the Monte Carlo expectation in the absence of neutrino oscillations giving: R_data(up/down)/R_MC(up/down) = 0.62^{+0.19}_{-0.14} (stat.) +- 0.02 (sys.). An extended maximum likelihood …
The magnetized MINOS near detector can accurately determine the charge sign of atmospheric muons, this facilitates a measurement of the atmospheric muon charge ratio. To reduce the systematic error associated with geometric bias and acceptance we have combined equal periods of data obtained with opposite magnetic field polarities. We report a charge ratio of $1.2666\pm0.0015(stat.)^{+0.0096}_{-0.0088}(syst.)$ at a mean E$_{μ,0}cos(θ)$=\unit[63]{GeV}. This measurement is consistent with the world average\cite{Hebbeker}\cite{Haino}\cite{Achard} but significantly lower than the earlier observatio…
We found 140 neutrino-induced muons in 854.24 live days in the MINOS far detector. We looked for evidence of neutrino disappearance in this data set by computing the ratio of the number of low momentum muons to the sum of the number of high momentum and unknown momentum muons for both data and Monte Carlo expectation in the absence of neutrino oscillations. The ratio of data and Monte Carlo ratios is consistent with an oscillation signal. A fit to the data for the oscillation parameters excludes the null oscillation hypothesis at the 94% confidence level. We separated the muons by charge sign …
We outline in detail a staging scenario for realizing the Neutrino Factory and the Muon Collider. As a first stage we envisage building an intense proton source that can be used to perform high intensity conventional neutrino beam experiments ("Superbeams"). While this is in progress, we perform R&D in collecting, cooling and accelerating muons which leads to the next two stages of "Cold Muon Beams" and the Neutrino Factory. Further progress in Muon Cooling especially in the area of emittance exchange will lead us to the Muon Collider. A staged scenario such as this opens up new physics avenue…
The 5.4 kton MINOS far detector has been taking charge-separated cosmic ray muon data since the beginning of August, 2003 at a depth of 2070 meters-water-equivalent in the Soudan Underground Laboratory, Minnesota, USA. The data with both forward and reversed magnetic field running configurations were combined to minimize systematic errors in the determination of the underground muon charge ratio. When averaged, two independent analyses find the charge ratio underground to be 1.374 +/- 0.004 (stat.) +0.012 -0.010(sys.). Using the map of the Soudan rock overburden, the muon momenta as measured u…
An overview is given of the neutrino physics potential of future muon storage rings that use muon collider technology to produce, accelerate and store large currents of muons.
An overview is given of the neutrino physics potential of future muon storage rings that use muon collider technology to produce, accelerate and store large currents of muons.
An estimate of the energy of neutrino-induced muons in MACRO is provided by a multiple Coulomb scattering measurement. The MACRO original upward-muon data sample has been subdivided according to the reconstructed muon energy. The results are interpreted in terms of neutrino oscillation.
This letter reports results from the MINOS experiment based on its initial exposure to neutrinos from the Fermilab NuMI beam. The rate and energy spectra of charged current muon neutrino interactions are compared in two detectors located along the beam axis at distances of 1 km and 735 km. With 1.27 x 10^{20} 120 GeV protons incident on the NuMI target, 215 events with energies below 30 GeV are observed at the Far Detector, compared to an expectation of 336 \pm 14.4 events. The data are consistent with muon neutrino disappearance via oscillation with |Δm^2_{23}| = 2.74^{+0.44}_{-0.26} x 10^{-3…
We present results for muon neutrino oscillation in the KEK to Kamioka (K2K) long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. K2K uses an accelerator-produced muon neutrino beam with a mean energy of 1.3 GeV directed at the Super-Kamiokande detector. We observed the energy dependent disappearance of muon neutrino, which we presume have oscillated to tau neutrino. The probability that we would observe these results if there is no neutrino oscillation is 0.0050% (4.0 sigma).
This letter reports results from a search for muon-neutrino to electron-neutrino transitions by the MINOS experiment based on a 7x10^20 protons-on-target exposure. Our observation of 54 candidate electron-neutrino events in the Far Detector with a background of 49.1+/-7.0(stat.)+/-2.7(syst.) events predicted by the measurements in the Near Detector requires 2sin^2(2theta_{13})sin^2(theta_{23})<0.12 (0.20) at the 90% C.L. for the normal (inverted) mass hierarchy at delta_cp=0. The experiment sets the tightest limits to date on the value of theta_{13} for nearly all values of delta_cp for the no…
The previously published atmospheric neutrino data did not distinguish whether muon neutrinos were oscillating into tau neutrinos or sterile neutrinos, as both hypotheses fit the data. Using data recorded in 1100 live-days of the Super-Kamiokande detector, we use three complementary data samples to study the difference in zenith angle distribution due to neutral currents and matter effects. We find no evidence favoring sterile neutrinos, and reject the hypothesis at the 99% confidence level. On the other hand, we find that oscillation between muon and tau neutrinos suffices to explain all the …
I describe two new searches for sterile neutrino oscillations from the MINOS and Daya Bay experiments. MINOS looked for evidence through muon neutrino disappearance with data collected from the NuMI neutrino beam. Daya Bay searched for evidence through electron antineutrino disappearance using data collected from nuclear reactors. I explain how the MINOS and Daya Bay searches were combined to produce constraints on the same phase space as LSND and MiniBooNE. Finally, I present the status of the sterile neutrino search using data from MINOS+.
We propose a test to compare the speed of muons and muon neutrinos produced in the same bundles in the atmosphere. By comparing the arrival times of primary muons and muons induced by neutrinos, experiments such as Super-Kamiokande, IceCube and ANTARES could verify recent hints on the possibility that neutrinos have a velocity larger than the speed of light. For smaller detectors such as MINOS and OPERA, where it may be challenging to recognize downgoing muons induced by neutrinos inside the active volume, another measurement may be possible thanks to the ns-time resolution. The arrival times …
We measure the horizontal ($|\cos(θ_z)|<0.14$) neutrino-induced muon flux in Soudan 2 to be $4.01\pm 0.50\pm 0.30\times 10^{-13} $cm$^{-2}$sr$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$. From the absence of horizontal muons with large energy loss, we set a limit on the flux of muon neutrinos from Active Galactic Nuclei.
The energy of atmospheric neutrinos detected by MACRO was estimated using multiple coulomb scattering of upward throughgoing muons. This analysis allows a test of atmospheric neutrino oscillations, relying on the distortion of the muon energy distribution. These results have been combined with those coming from the upward throughgoing muon angular distribution only. Both analyses are independent of the neutrino flux normalization and provide strong evidence, above the 4 sigma level, in favour of neutrino oscillations.
The MINOS/MINOS+ experiment has recently reported stringent limits on $ν_μ$ disappearance that appear to rule out the 3+1 sterile neutrino model. However, in this paper we wish to point out problems associated with the MINOS/MINOS+ analysis. In particular, we find that MINOS/MINOS+ has either underestimated their systematic errors and/or has obtained evidence for physics beyond the 3-neutrino paradigm. Either case would invalidate the limits on $ν_μ$ disappearance.
The angular distribution of upward-going muons produced by atmospheric neutrinos in the rock below the MACRO detector show anomalies in good agreement with two flavor neutrino-mu ==> neutrino-tau oscillations with maximum mixing and Delta m**2 around 0.0024 eV**2. Exploiting the dependence of magnitude of the matter effect on oscillation channel, and using a set of 809 upward-going muons observed in MACRO, we show that the two flavor neutrino-mu ==> neutrino-sterile oscillation is disfavored with 99% C.L. with respect to neutrino-mu ==> neutrino-tau.
The flux of low energy neutrinos (<E_nu>~ 4 GeV) has been studied with the MACRO detector at Gran Sasso via the detection of muon neutrinos interactions inside the apparatus, and of upward-going stopping muons. Data collected in ~3 y with the full apparatus were analyzed. The results are compatible with a deficit of the flux of atmospheric muon neutrinos from below, and no reduction from above, with respect to Monte Carlo predictions. The deficit and the angular distributions are interpreted in terms of neutrino oscillations, and compared with the MACRO results on the upward throughgoing muons…
We describe the current status of the research within the Muon Collaboration towards realizing a Neutrino Factory. We describe briefly the physics motivation behind the neutrino factory approach to studying neutrino oscillations and the longer term goal of building the Muon Collider. The benefits of a step by step staged approach of building a proton driver, collecting and cooling muons followed by the acceleration and storage of cooled muons are emphasized. Several usages of cooled muons open up at each new stage in such an approach and new physics opportunites are realized at the completion …
MiniBooNE seeks to confirm or refute the LSND muon-antineutrino to electron-antineutrino oscillation signal with high statistical significance and different systematics. MiniBooNE has accumulated the world's largest GeV neutrino data set. MiniBooNE employs a cosmic muon calibration system to study the reconstruction of the energies and directions of muons in the detector. Progress of measurements of the muon neutrino charged-current quasi-elastic and single pion production cross sections are presented.
We present measurements of the semi-inclusive cross-sections for muon neutrino and muon antineutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering interactions with two oppositely charged muons in the final state. These events dominantly arise from production of a charm quark during the scattering process. The measurement was obtained from the analysis of 5102 muon neutrino-induced and 1458 muon antineutrino-induced events collected with the NuTeV detector exposed to a sign-selected beam at the Fermilab Tevatron. We also extract a cross-section measurement from a re-analysis of 5030 muon neutrino-induced …
European, Japanese, and US Neutrino Factory designs are presented. The main R&D issues and associated R&D programs, future prospects, and the additional issues that must be addressed to produce a viable Muon Collider design, are discussed.
Following a 7-year run with the MINOS experiment from 2005 to 2012, the MINOS+ long-baseline neutrino experiment started operations in September 2013. Utilizing the MINOS Near and Far Detectors at Fermilab and northern Minnesota, respectively, and measuring the new medium-energy NuMI neutrino beam over baseline of 735 km, MINOS+ has accumulated an exposure of $1.7\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target. In this paper, we present preliminary results from the MINOS+run. In addition, we report on improved results from a three-neutrino flavor analysis of the full $14\times 10^{20}$ MINOS-era beam sample…
We describe the status of our effort to realize a first neutrino factory and the progress made in understanding the problems associated with the collection and cooling of muons towards that end. We summarize the physics that can be done with neutrino factories as well as with intense cold beams of muons. The physics potential of muon colliders is reviewed, both as Higgs Factories and compact high energy lepton colliders. The status and timescale of our research and development effort is reviewed as well as the latest designs in cooling channels including the promise of ring coolers in achievin…
It is shown that muon decays in straight sections of muon collider rings will naturally produce highly collimated neutrino beams that can be several orders of magnitude stronger than the beams at existing accelerators. We discuss possible experimental setups and give a very brief overview of the physics potential from such beamlines. Formulae are given for the neutrino event rates at both short and long baseline neutrino experiments in these beams.
We report a search for muon neutrino disappearance in the $Δm^{2}$ region of 0.5-40 $eV^2$ using data from both SciBooNE and MiniBooNE experiments. SciBooNE data provides a constraint on the neutrino flux, so that the sensitivity to $ν_μ$ disappearance with both detectors is better than with just MiniBooNE alone. The preliminary sensitivity for a joint $ν_μ$ disappearance search is presented.
Since evidence for neutrino oscillations was first observed in 1998, the study of muon neutrino oscillations has been aggressively pursued. In doing so, atmospheric and accelerator-based neutrino experiments have measured with the highest precision two fundamental neutrino parameters: the mass-square difference and the large mixing angle in the atmospheric neutrino sector. Furthermore, the dominant mode of these oscillations has recently been established to be from muon to tau neutrinos with both direct and indirect observations. Also, for the first time the anti-neutrino counterparts to these…
MINOS is the first large magnetic detector deep underground and is the first to measure the muon charge ratio with high statistics in the region near 1 TeV.\cite{bib:adamson} An approximate formula for the muon charge ratio can be expressed in terms of $ε_π$ = 115 GeV, $ε_K$ = 850 GeV and $\ec$. The implications for K production in the atmosphere will be discussed.
A measurement of the flux of neutrino-induced muons using the MACRO detector is presented. Different event topologies, corresponding to different neutrino parent energies can be detected. The upward throughgoing muon sample is the larger event sample. The observed upward-throughgoing muons are 26% fewer than expected and the zenith angle distribution does not fit with the expected one. Assuming neutrino oscillations, both measurements suggest maximum mixing and Dm2 of a few times 10-3 eV2. The other samples are due to the internally produced events and to upward-going stopping muons. These dat…
We consider possible detector designs for short-baseline neutrino experiments using neutrino beams produced at the First Muon Collider complex. The high fluxes available at the muon collider make possible high statistics deep-inelastic scattering neutrino experiments with a low-mass target. A design of a low-energy neutrino oscillation experiment on the ``tabletop'' scale is also discussed.
The European collaboration ANTARES aims to operate a large neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea, 2400 m deep, 40 km from Toulon (France). Muon neutrinos are detected through the muon produced in charged current interactions in the medium surrounding the detector. The Cherenkov light emitted by the muon is registered by a 3D photomultiplier array. Muon energy can be inferred using 3 different methods based on the knowledge of the features of muon energy losses. They result in an energy resolution of a factor \~ 2 above 1 TeV. The ANTARES sensitivity to diffuse neutrino flux models is obta…
A search for muon anti-neutrino to electron anti-neutrino oscillations was conducted by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center using muon anti-neutrinos from positive muon decay at rest. A total excess of 87.9 +/- 22.4 +/- 6.0 events consistent with electron anti-neutrino plus proton scattering to positron plus neutron was observed above the expected background. This excess corresponds to an oscillation probability of (0.264 +/- 0.067 +/- 0.045), which is consistent with an earlier analysis. In conjunction with other known limits on neutrino oscillat…
The flux of muons induced by atmospheric neutrinos has been measured with the MACRO detector. Different event topologies have been detected, due to neutrino interactions in the apparatus and in the rock below it. The upward-throughgoing muon sample is the larger one and is generated by neutrinos with a peak energy of ~100 GeV. The observed upward-throughgoing muons are 26 % fewer than expected and the zenith angle distribution does not fit with the expected one. Assuming \mutau neutrino oscillation, the angular shape and the normalization factor suggest maximal mixing and Δm^2 of a few times 1…

After a brief introduction to neutrino oscillations and a review of the world knowledge of neutrino oscillation parameters, we introduce two current neutrino oscillation experiments, MINOS and MiniBooNE. MINOS makes precise measurements of the oscillation parameters |Δm^{2}_{32}| and sin^{2} (2θ_{23}). MiniBooNE tests neutrino oscillations in the parameter region reported by the LSND experiment, which would require a new neutrino state. We review recent experimental results from both experiments and give an outlook on future measurements.
Upward-going stopping muons initiated by atmospheric \numu and \anumu interactions in the rock below the Soudan 2 detector have been isolated, together with a companion sample of neutrino-induced single muons, created within the detector, which travel downwards and exit. The downward-going sample is consistent with the atmospheric-neutrino flux prediction, but the upward-going sample exhibits a sizeable depletion. Both are consistent with previously reported Soudan-2 neutrino-oscillation results. Inclusion of the two samples in an all-event likelihood analysis, using recent 3D-atmospheric-neut…
MINOS is a two-detector on-axis experiment based at Fermilab. The NuMI neutrino beam encounters the MINOS Near Detector 1 km downstream before travelling 734 km through the Earth's crust, to reach the Far Detector located at the Soudan Underground Laboratory in Northern Minnesota. By searching for oscillations driven by a large mass splitting, MINOS is sensitive to the existence of sterile neutrinos. This poster will present results of a search for sterile neutrinos that is sensitive to the parameter space suggested by LSND and MiniBooNE. Both charged current numu and neutral current neutrino …
We report the results of a search for muon-neutrino disappearance by the Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search. The experiment uses two detectors separated by 734 km to observe a beam of neutrinos created by the Neutrinos at the Main Injector facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. The data were collected in the first 282 days of beam operations and correspond to an exposure of 1.27e20 protons on target. Based on measurements in the Near Detector, in the absence of neutrino oscillations we expected 336 +/- 14 muon-neutrino charged-current interactions at the Far Detector but obs…
The MINOS long-baseline experiment is using the NuMI neutrino beam to make precise measurements of neutrino flavor oscillations in the "atmospheric" neutrino sector. MINOS observes the $ν_μ$ disappearance oscillations seen in atmospheric neutrinos, tests possible disappearance to sterile $ν$ by measuring the neutral current flux, and extends our reach towards the so far unseen $θ_{13}$ by looking for $ν_e$ appearance in this $ν_μ$ beam. The magnetized MINOS detectors also allow tests of CPT conservation by discriminating between neutrinos and anti-neutrinos on an event-by-event basis. The inte…
The MINOS experiment at Fermilab has released an updated result on muon disappearance based upon 2.5 x 10^20 protons on target. The experiment utilizes the intense source of muon neutrinos provided by the NuMI beam line. This note summarizes the systematic uncertainties in the experiment's knowledge of the flux and energy spectrum of the neutrinos from NuMI.
Using a NuMI beam exposure of 7.1 /times 10^20 protons-on-target, the MINOS long-baseline experiment has performed a search for active to sterile neutrino mixing over a distance of 735 km. Details of the analysis are provided, along with results from comparisons with standard three neutrino oscillations and fits to a 3+1 model including oscillations into one sterile neutrino. An outlook on the future sterile neutrino related contributions from MINOS and the proposed MINOS+ project is also presented.
Limits on $ν_μ(\overlineν_μ) \to ν_e (\overlineν_e)$ oscillations based on a statistical separation of $ν_e N$ charged current interactions in the CCFR detector at Fermilab are presented. $ν_e$ interactions are identified by the difference in the longitudinal shower energy deposition pattern of $ν_e N \rightarrow eX$ versus $ν_μN \to ν_μX$ interactions. Neutrino energies range from 30 to 600 GeV with a mean of 140 GeV, and $ν_μ$ flight lengths vary from 0.9 km to 1.4 km. The lowest 90% confidence upper limit in $sin^2 2α$ of $1.1 \times 10^{-3}$ is obtained at $Δm^2 \sim 300 eV^2$. For $sin^2 …
We searched for a sidereal modulation in the rate of neutrinos produced by the NuMI beam and observed by the MINOS far detector. The detection of such harmonic signals could be a signature of neutrino-antineutrino mixing due to Lorentz and CPT violation as described by the Standard Model Extension framework. We found no evidence for these sidereal signals and we placed limits on the coefficients in this theory describing the effect. This is the first report of limits on these neutrino-antineutrino mixing coefficients.
A 4600 Hz fast ramping synchrotron is studied as an economical way of accelerating muons from 4 to 20 GeV/c for a neutrino factory. Eddy current losses are minimized by the low machine duty cycle plus thin grain oriented silicon steel laminations and thin copper wires. Combined function magnets with high gradients alternating within single magnets form the lattice. Muon survival is 83%.
We propose a new method of selection of high purity charge current quasielastic neutrino events with a good reconstruction of interacting neutrino energy. Performance of the method was verified with several tests using GENIE, NEUT and NuWro Monte Carlo events generators with carbon and argon targets. The method can be useful in neutrino oscillation studies with a few GeV energy beams.
We study the conceptual feasibility of a high energy, ``short baseline'', zero background experiment to search for muon-neutrino --> electron-neutrino oscillations and fully covering the area where the LSND experiment claims evidence. The natural electron-neutrino background of the muon-neutrino beam, from K and mu decays in the decay tunnel, is suppressed by a hadron blind detector that vetoes, by time coincidence, a possible electron-neutrino signal in the neutrino detector (anti-tagging technique). We discuss this new idea and we study a possible implementation in the old neutrino line of t…
Bose-Einstein Correlations in one and two dimensions have been studied in charged current muon-neutrino interaction events collected with NOMAD. In one dimension the Bose-Einstein effect has been analyzed with the Goldhaber and the Kopylov parametrizations. The two-dimensional shape of the source has been investigated in the longitudinal co-moving frame. A significant difference between the transverse and the longitudinal sizes is observed.
This talk presented the first muon anti-neutrino disappearance analysis using data from the T2K anti-neutrino data taken in 2014 and up to March 12, 2015. The preliminary measured oscillation parameters, using $2.3\times 10^{20}$ protons on target, are $Δ\bar{\rm{m}}_{32}^{2} = 2.33_{-0.23}^{+0.27} \times 10^{-3}~$eV$^{2}$, and sin$^{2} \barθ_{23} = 0.515_{-0.095}^{+0.085}$. These oscillation parameters are consistent with the neutrino mode, and with the measurements of the MINOS experiment.
The MINOS experiment has used the world's most powerful neutrino beam to make precision neutrino oscillation measurements. By observing the disappearance of muon neutrinos, MINOS has made the world's most precise measurement of the larger neutrino mass splitting, and has measured the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{23}$. Using a dedicated antineutrino beam, MINOS has made the first direct precision measurements of the corresponding antineutrino parameters. A search for \nue and \nuebar appearance has enabled a measurement of the mixing angle $θ_{13}$. A measurement of the neutral-current interaction…
T2K is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, in which a muon neutrino beam is produced at J-PARC and detected 295 km away at the Super-Kamiokande detector. The T2K experiment observed electron-neutrino appearance in 2012. This observation enables T2K to explore CP violation in the lepton sector by comparing electron-neutrino appearance and electron-antineutrino appearance. Indeed, the number of observed electron neutrino events up to 2012 is, though within statistical fluctuation, larger than the expectation, which suggests maximal CP violation. Since 2013, T2K has been accumulating…
The T2K neutrino beam consists mostly of muon neutrinos with a 1$\%$ component of electron neutrinos. In order to maximise the physics potential of T2K and other future neutrino experiments, it is important to understand how these electron and muon neutrinos interact. To this end, the ratio of the Charged-Current Quasi-Elastic (CCQE) cross section to the total Charged Current (CC) cross section is taken for both $ν_{e}$ and $ν_μ$ using data from the T2K near detector, ND280, and simulated data from NEUT and GENIE Monte Carlo generators. This has the advantage that many of the systematic uncert…
SciBooNE is a neutrino and anti-neutrino cross-section experiment at Fermilab, USA. The SciBooNE experiment is summarised and two independent CCQE analyses are described. For one of the analyses, an absolute muon-neutrino CCQE cross-section in the neutrino energy region (0.6-1.6) GeV is shown and the technique developed for such a purpose is also explained. The total cross-section measured over this energy range agrees well with expectations, based on the NEUT event generator and using a value of 1.21 GeV for the CCQE axial mass.
The velocity of a ~3 GeV neutrino beam is measured by comparing detection times at the Near and Far detectors of the MINOS experiment, separated by 734 km. A total of 473 Far Detector neutrino events was used to measure (v-c)/c = 5.1 +/- 2.9 x 10^-5 (at 68% C.L.). By correlating the measured energies of 258 charged-current neutrino events to their arrival times at the Far Detector, a limit is imposed on the neutrino mass of m_nu < 50 MeV/c^2 (99% C.L.).
Energetic primary cosmic rays entering the Earth's atmosphere generate flux of secondary particles including neutrinos. Muon neutrinos passed through the Earth and produced muons via the charged current reaction can be registered by experimental setups intended for the measurements with colliding beams. Due to large geometrical size and advanced muon detecting system such detectors as ATLAS and CMS on LHC have chance to contribute also into the neutrino physics. The estimation of possible rates of up-going muons produced by neutrinos is given.
The observed neutrino flavor transitions are currently explained by the three flavor neutrino oscillation phenomenon, considered to be the leading order mechanism behind the flavor transitions. Currently existing data from LSND, MiniBooNE and reactor experiments demonstrate anomalies that could potentially be indications of non-standard neutrino phenomena. MINOS can probe transitions from muon neutrinos to electron neutrinos and search for anomalous behavior that cannot be explained by standard model neutrino oscillations. Here we present the search for second order effects in the flavor trans…
