We present a detailed study of the radial distribution of the multiple populations identified in the Galactic globular cluster omega Cen. We used both space-based images (ACS/WFC and WFPC2) and ground-based images (FORS1@VLT and WFI@2.2m ESO telescopes) to map the cluster from the inner core to the outskirts (~20 arcmin). These data sets have been used to extract high-accuracy photometry for the construction of color-magnitude diagrams and astrometric positions of ~900 000 stars. We find that in the inner ~2 core radii the blue main sequence (bMS) stars slightly dominate the red main sequence (rMS) in number. At greater distances from the cluster center, the relative numbers of bMS stars with respect to rMS drop steeply, out to ~8 arcmin, and then remain constant out to the limit of our observations. We also find that the dispersion of the Gaussian that best fits the color distribution within the bMS is significantly greater than the dispersion of the Gaussian that best fits the color distribution within the rMS. In addition, the relative number of intermediate-metallicity red-giant-branch stars which includes the progeny of the bMS) with respect to the metal-poor component (the progeny of the rMS) follows a trend similar to that of the main-sequence star-count ratio N_bMS/N_rMS. The most metal-rich component of the red-giant branch follows the same distribution as the intermediate-metallicity component. We briefly discuss the possible implications of the observed radial distribution of the different stellar components in omega Cen.
We derive abundances of Fe, Na, O, and s-elements from GIRAFFE@VLT spectra for more than 200 red giant stars in the Milky Way satellite Omega Centauri. Our preliminary results are that: (i) we confirm that Omega Centauri exibiths large star-to-star metallicity variations ($\sim$ 1.4 dex); (ii) the metallicity distribution reveals the presence of at least five stellar populations with different [Fe/H]; (iii) a clear Na-O anticorrelation is clearly observed for the metal-poor and metal-intermediate populations while apparently the anticorrelation disappears for the most metal-rich populations. I…
We analyzed the B and V light curves of two EA-type binaries V211 and NV358 using the WD code for the first time. Our analysis shows that V211 is a typical Algol-type binary and NV358 is a well detached binary system. As the two binaries are definite proper motion members of omega Centauri, we estimated their physical parameters, obtaining M_1=1.13\pm0.03M_\odot, R_1=0.98\pm0.01R_\odot and M_2=0.33\pm0.01M_\odot, R_2=0.92\pm0.01R_\odot for V211; M_1=1.30\pm0.05M_\odot, R_1=1.03\pm0.01R_\odot and M_2=0.58\pm0.02M_\odot, R_2=0.78\pm0.01R_\odot for NV358. On the color-magnitude diagram of omega C…
We report a spectroscopic study of 19 photometric variables and 55 blue, yellow and red straggler candidates in the field of omega Centauri. We confirm the cluster membership of 18 variables and 54 straggler candidates. Velocity variations are detected in 22 objects, and another 17 objects are classified as suspected of being velocity-variable. Velocity data of 11 photometric variables phase with their photometric periods, however none of these objects has a mass function indicating the presence of a massive degenerate component. Based on both photometric and spectroscopic data we find that th…
We present results of deep radio continuum observations of two galactic globular clusters 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc) and Omega Centauri (Omega Cen) with Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). No statistically significant evidence for radio emission was found from the central region for the two clusters. However, both clusters show a 2.5-sigma detection near the center that may be confirmed by future deeper radio observations. The 3-sigma upper limits of the radio observations is 20 and 40 microJy/beam for Omega Cen and 47 Tuc, respectively. By using the fundamental plane of accreting black holes w…
We measured temperatures, gravities, and masses for a large sample of blue horizontal branch stars in omega Centauri, comparing the results with theoretical expectations for canonical and He-enriched stars, and with previous measurements in three other clusters. The measured gravities of omega Cen stars are systematically lower than canonical models, in agreement with expectations for He-enriched stars, and contrary to that observed in the comparison clusters. However, the derived masses are unrealistically too low as well. This cannot be explained by low gravities alone, nor by any of the oth…
We report on the first spectroscopic search for quiescent degenerate binaries in globular clusters. Our survey is based on a sample of short-period optical variables which are likely optical counterparts of quiescent X-ray sources in omega Centauri (NGC 5139) and NGC 6397. All of the studied candidates have nearly sinusoidal light curves with amplitudes of 0.1--0.35~mag in $V$ and periods of 0.1--1.3~days. This type of variability, most probably originating from the ellipsoidal effect, has been observed in several X-ray novae when they settled into quiescence after an outburst. We find that tw…
By using high-resolution spectra acquired with FLAMES-GIRAFFE at the ESO/VLT, we measured radial and rotational velocities for 110 Blue Straggler stars (BSSs) in Omega Centauri, the globular cluster-like stellar system harboring the largest known BSS population. According to their radial velocities, 109 BSSs are members of the system. The rotational velocity distribution is very broad, with the bulk of BSSs spinning at less than ~40 km/s (in agreement with the majority of such stars observed in other globular clusters) and a long tail reaching ~200 km/s. About 40% of the sample has vsini >40 k…
Omega Centauri is no longer the only globular cluster known to contain multiple stellar populations, yet it remains the most puzzling. Due to the extreme way in which the multiple stellar population phenomenon manifests in this cluster, it has been suggested that it may be the remnant of a larger stellar system. In this work, we present a spectroscopic investigation of the stellar populations hosted in the globular cluster Omega Centauri to shed light on its, still puzzling, chemical enrichment history. With this aim we used FLAMES+GIRAFFE@VLT to observe 300 stars distributed along the multimo…
The infrared channel of the Wide-Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope revealed multiple main sequences of very low-mass stars in the globular clusters NGC 2808 and Omega Centauri. In this paper I summarize the observational facts and provide a possible interpretation.
We report the discovery of two Li-rich giant stars (fainter than the red giant branch bump) in the stellar system Omega Centauri using GIRAFFE-FLAMES spectra. These two stars have A(Li)=1.65 and 2.40 dex and they belong to the main population of the system ([Fe/H]=--1.70 and --1.82, respectively). The most Li-rich of them (#25664) has [Na/Fe]=+0.87 dex that is ~0.5 dex higher than those measured in the most Na-rich stars of Omega Centauri of similar metallicity. The chemical abundances of Li and Na in #25664 can be qualitatively explained by deep extra mixing efficient within the star during i…
We present a chemical-composition analysis of 77 red-giant stars in Omega Centauri. We have measured abundances for carbon and nitrogen, and combined our results with abundances of O, Na, La, and Fe that we determined in our previous work. Our aim is to better understand the peculiar chemical-enrichment history of this cluster, by studying how the total C+N+O content varies among the different-metallicity stellar groups, and among stars at different places along the Na-O anticorrelation. We find the (anti)correlations among the light elements that would be expected on theoretical ground for ma…
In this letter, the results of our low-resolution spectroscopic survey for identifying the hydrogen-deficient (H-deficient) stars in the red giant sample of the globular cluster Omega Cen are reported. Spectral analyses were carried out on the basis of the strengths of (0,0) MgH band and the Mg b triplet. In our sample, four giants were identified with weak/absent MgH bands in their observed spectra not as expected for their well determined stellar parameters. The Mg abundances for the program stars were determined from subordinate lines of the MgH band to the blue of the Mg b triplet, using t…
We herein determine the average integrated mass loss from stars stars belonging to the dominant metal-poor population ([Fe/H] ~ --1.7) of the Galactic globular cluster omega Centauri (NGC 5139) during their red giant and horizontal branch evolution. Masses are empirically calculated from spectroscopic measurements of surface gravity and photometric measurements of temperature and luminosity. Systematic uncertainties prevent an absolute measurement of masses at a phase of evolution. However, the relative masses of early asymptotic giant branch stars and central red giant branch stars can be mea…
A direct measure of the helium abundances from the near-infrared transition of He I at 1.08 micron is obtained for two nearly identical red giant stars in the globular cluster Omega Centauri. One star exhibits the He I line; the line is weak or absent in the other star. Detailed non-LTE semi-empirical models including expansion in spherical geometry are developed to match the chromospheric H-alpha, H-beta, and Ca II K lines, in order to predict the helium profile and derive a helium abundance. The red giant spectra suggest a helium abundance of Y less than or equal 0.22 (LEID 54064) and Y=0.39…
The double main sequence identified in the globular cluster Omega Centauri has been interpreted using isochrones to indicate a large variation in the abundance of helium. If true, a helium enhancement carries strong implications for the chemical and stellar evolutionary history of this cluster. However, only indirect measures currently support this conjecture. We report the discovery of a variation in the line strength of the near-infrared He I 10830 A transition in twelve similar red giants in Omega Centauri observed with PHOENIX on Gemini-S. Abundances of these stars derived from Magellan/MI…
We have used high resolution observations obtained at the AAT with UHRF (R ~ 100,000) and at Gemini-S with b-HROS (R ~ 150,000) to determine magnesium isotope ratios for seven omega Centauri red giants that cover a range in iron abundance from [Fe/H] = --1.78 to --0.78 dex, and for two red giants in M4 (NGC 6121). The omega Centauri stars sample both the "primordial" (i.e., O-rich, Na and Al-poor) and the "extreme" (O-depleted, Na and Al-rich) populations in the cluster. The primordial population stars in both omega Centauri and M4 show (25Mg, 26Mg)/24 Mg isotopic ratios that are consistent wi…
We analysed high-resolution UVES spectra of six stars belonging to the subgiant branch of omega Centauri, and derived abundance ratios of 19 chemical elements (namely Al, Ba, C, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, La, Mg, Mn, N, Na, Ni, Sc, Si, Sr, Ti, and Y). A comparison with previous abundance determinations for red giants provided remarkable agreement and allowed us to identify the sub-populations to which our targets belong. We found that three targets belong to a low-metallicity population at [Fe/H]~-2.0 dex, [alpha/Fe]~+0.4 dex and [s/Fe]~0 dex. Stars with similar characteristics were found in small am…
The multi-object fibre-fed spectrograph AAOmega at the Anglo-Australian Telescope has been used to establish and measure accurate (<1 kms-1) radial velocities for a new sample of members in the outer parts of the stellar system omega Centauri. The new sample more than doubles the number of known members with precise velocities that lie between 25' and 45' from the cluster center. Combining this sample with earlier work confirms that the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of omega Cen remains approximately constant at ~6.5 kms-1 in the outer parts of the cluster, which contain only a small fract…
We present a chemical abundance analysis of a metal-poor star, ROA 276, in the stellar system omega Centauri. We confirm that this star has an unusually high [Sr/Ba] abundance ratio. Additionally, ROA 276 exhibits remarkably high abundance ratios, [X/Fe], for all elements from Cu to Mo along with normal abundance ratios for the elements from Ba to Pb. The chemical abundance pattern of ROA 276, relative to a primordial omega Cen star ROA 46, is best fit by a fast-rotating low-metallicity massive stellar model of 20 Msun, [Fe/H] = -1.8, and an initial rotation 0.4 times the critical value; no ot…
Dust production is explored around 14 metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -1.91 to -0.98) giant stars in the Galactic globular cluster omega Centauri using new Spitzer IRS spectra. This sample includes the cluster's post-AGB and carbon stars and is thus the first representative spectral study of dust production in a metal-poor ([Fe/H] < -1) population. Only the more metal rich stars V6 and V17 ([Fe/H] = -1.08, -1.06) exhibit silicate emission, while the five other stars with mid-infrared excess show only a featureless continuum which we argue is caused by metallic iron dust grains. We examine the metallicity…
The galactic globular cluster Omega Centauri is the most massive of its kind, with a complex mix of multiple stellar populations and several kinematic and dynamical peculiarities. Different mean proper motions have been detected among the three main sub-populations, implying that the most metal-rich one is of accreted origin. This particular piece of evidence has been a matter of debate because the available data have either not been sufficiently precise or limited to a small region of the cluster to ultimately confirm or refute the result. Using astrometry from the second Gaia data release an…
We present [K/Fe] abundance ratios for a sample of 450 stars in Omega Centauri, using high resolution spectra acquired with the multi-object spectrograph FLAMES@VLT. Abundances for Fe, Na and Mg were also derived. We detected intrinsic K variations in the analysed stars. Moreover, [K/Fe] shows a significant correlation with [Na/Fe] and anti-correlation with [Mg/Fe]. The presence of a clear-cut Mg-K anti-correlation makes Omega Centauri the third stellar system, after NGC 2419 and NGC 2808, hosting a sub-population of stars with [Mg/Fe]<0.0 dex, K-enriched in the case of Omega Centauri by ~0.3 …
High spectral resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio optical spectra of red giants in the globular cluster Omega Centauri are analysed for stellar parameters and chemical abundances of 15 elements including helium by either line equivalent widths or synthetic spectrum analyses. The simultaneous abundance analysis of MgH and Mg lines adopting theoretical photospheres and a combination of He/H$-$ratios proved to be the only powerful probe to evaluate helium abundances of red giants cooler than 4400 K, wherein otherwise helium line transitions (He {\scs I} 10830 and 5876 Å) present for a direc…
We analyze the reddening, surface helium abundance and mass of 115 horizontal branch (HB) and blue hook (BH) stars in OmegaCentauri, spanning the HB from the blue edge of the instability strip to Teff~50000K. The mean cluster reddening is E(B-V)=0.115+-0.004, in good agreement with previous estimates, but we evidence a pattern of differential reddening in the cluster area. The stars in the western half are more reddened than in the southwest quadrant by 0.03-0.04 magnitudes. We find that the helium abundances measured on low-resolution spectra are systematically lower by ~0.25 dex than the mea…
We present a multi-instrument spectroscopic analysis of the unique Li/Na-rich giant star 25664 in Omega Centauri using spectra acquired with FLAMES-GIRAFFE, X-SHOOTER, UVES and HARPS. Li and Na abundances have been derived from the UVES spectrum using transitions weakly sensitive to non-local thermodynamic equilibrium and assumed isotopic ratio. This new analysis confirms the surprising Li and Na abundances of this star (A(Li) =+2.71+-0.07 dex, [Na/Fe]=+1.00+-0.05 dex). Additionally, we provide new pieces of evidence for its chemical characterisation. The 12C/13C isotopic ratio (15+-2) shows t…
The globular cluster Omega Centauri is the most massive and luminous cluster in the Galaxy. The $γ$-ray source FL8Y J1326.7$-$4729 is coincident with the core of the cluster, leading to speculation that hitherto unknown radio pulsars or annihilating dark matter may be present in the cluster core. Here we report on the discovery of five millisecond pulsars in Omega Centauri following observations with the Parkes radio telescope. Four of these pulsars are isolated with spin periods of 4.1, 4.2, 4.6 and 6.8 ms. The fifth has a spin period of 4.8 ms and is in an eclipsing binary system with an orb…
We present Li, Na, Al and Fe abundances of 199 lower red giant branch stars members of the stellar system Omega Centauri, using high-resolution spectra acquired with FLAMES at the Very Large Telescope. The A(Li) distribution is peaked at A(Li) ~ 1 dex with a prominent tail toward lower values. The peak of the distribution well agrees with the lithium abundances measured in lower red giant branch stars in globular clusters and Galactic field stars. Stars with A(Li) ~ 1 dex are found at metallicities lower than [Fe/H] ~ -1.3 dex but they disappear at higher metallicities. On the other hand, Li-p…
The helium-enriched (He-enriched) metal-rich red giants of Omega Centauri, discovered by Hema and Pandey using the low-resolution spectra from the Vainu Bappu Telescope (VBT) and confirmed by the analyses of the high-resolution spectra obtained from the HRS-South African Large Telescope (SALT) for LEID 34225 and LEID 39048, are reanalysed here to determine their degree of He-enhancement/hydrogen-deficiency (H-deficiency). The observed MgH band combined with model atmospheres with differing He/H ratios are used for the analyses. The He/H ratios of these two giants are determined by enforcing th…
In the fourth paper of this series, we present -- and publicly release -- the state-of-the-art catalogue and atlases for the two remaining parallel fields observed with the Hubble Space Telescope for the large programme on omega Centauri. These two fields are located at ~12' from the centre of the globular cluster (in the West and South-West directions) and were imaged in filters from the ultraviolet to the infrared. Both fields were observed at two epochs separated by about 2 years that were used to derive proper motions and to compute membership probabilities.

We investigate a peculiar feature at the hottest, blue end of the horizontal branch of Galactic globular cluster omega Centauri, using the high-precision and nearly complete catalog that has been constructed from a survey taken with the ACS on board the HST, that covers the inner 10x10 arcminutes. It is a densely populated clump of stars with an almost vertical structure in the F435W-(F435W-F625W) plane, that we termed "blue clump". A comparison with theoretical models leads to the conclusion that this feature must necessarily harbor either hot flasher stars, or canonical He-rich stars --proge…
High-resolution optical spectra are analyzed for two of the four metal rich mildly hydrogen-poor or helium-enhanced giants discovered by Hema and Pandey (2014) along with their comparison normal (hydrogen-rich) giants of Omega Cen. The strengths of the MgH bands in the spectra of the program stars are analyzed for their derived stellar parameters. The observed spectra of the sample (hydrogen-poor) stars (LEID 39048 and LEID 34225) show weaker MgH bands unlike in the spectra of the normal comparison giants (LEID 61067 and LEID 32169). The magnesium abundance derived from MgH bands is less by 0.…
The most massive and complex globular clusters in the Galaxy are thought to have originated as the nuclear cores of now tidally disrupted dwarf galaxies, but the connection between globular clusters and dwarf galaxies is tenuous with the M54/Sagittarius system representing the only unambiguous link. The globular cluster Omega Centauri (w Cen) is more massive and chemically diverse than M 54, and is thought to have been the nuclear star cluster of either the Sequoia or Gaia-Enceladus galaxy. Local Group dwarf galaxies with masses equivalent to these systems often host significant populations of…
Historically, photometry has been largely used to identify stellar populations (MPs) in Globular Clusters (GCs) by using diagrams that are based on colours and magnitudes that are mostly sensitive to stars with different metallicities or different abundances of helium, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen. In particular, the pseudo two-colour diagram called chromosome map (ChM), allowed the identification and the characterization of MPs in about 70 GCs by using appropriate filters of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) that are sensitive to the stellar content of He, C, N, O and Fe. We use here high-preci…
We present the first comprehensive study of the most massive globular cluster Omega Centauri in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) extending from the center to ~ 28% of the tidal radius using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope aboard AstroSat. A comparison of the FUV-optical color-magnitude diagrams with available canonical models reveals that the horizontal branch (HB) stars bluer than the knee (hHBs) and the white dwarfs (WDs) are fainter in the FUV by ~ 0.5 mag than model predictions. They are also fainter than their counterparts in M13, another massive cluster. We simulated HB with at least five sub…
We summarize results of a search for X-ray-emitting binary stars in the massive globular cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139) using Chandra and HST. ACIS-I imaging reveals 180 X-ray sources, of which we estimate that 45-70 are associated with the cluster. We present 40 identifications, most of which we have obtained using ACS/WFC imaging with HST that covers the central 10'x10' of the cluster. Roughly half of the optical IDs are accreting binary stars, including 9 very faint blue stars that we suggest are cataclysmic variables near the period limit. Another quarter comprise a variety of different…
We present the results of a survey of radial velocities over a wide region extending from r~10 arcmin out to r~80 arcmin (~1.5 tidal radii) within the massive star cluster omega Centauri. The survey was performed with FLAMES@VLT, to study the velocity dispersion profile in the outer regions of this stellar system. We derived accurate radial velocities for a sample of 2557 newly observed stars, identifying 318 bona-fide cluster red giants. Merging our data with those provided by Pancino et al. (2007), we assembled a final homogeneous sample of 946 cluster members that allowed us to trace the ve…
We analyze a ~70 ksec Chandra ACIS-I exposure of the globular cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139). The ~17 amin x 17 amin field of view fully encompasses three core radii and almost twice the half-mass radius. We detect 180 sources to a limiting flux of ~4.3x10^-16 erg/cm^2/s (Lx = 1.2x10^30 erg/s at 4.9 kpc). After accounting for the number of active galactic nuclei and possible foreground stars, we estimate that 45-70 of the sources are cluster members. Four of the X-ray sources have previously been identified as compact accreting binaries in the cluster--three cataclysmic variables (CVs) and …

As part of a large investigation with Hubble Space Telescope to study the faintest stars within the globular cluster Omega Centauri, in this work we present early results on the multiplicity of its main sequence (MS) stars, based on deep optical and near-infrared observations. By using appropriate color-magnitude diagrams we have identified, for the first time, the two main stellar populations I, and II along the entire MS, from the turn-off towards the hydrogen-burning limit. We have compared the observations with suitable synthetic spectra of MS stars and conclude that the two MSs are consis…
We analyze data from the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys of the globular cluster Omega Cen. We construct a photometric and proper-motion catalog using the GO-9442, GO-10252, and GO-10775 data sets. The 2.5- to 4-year baseline between observations yields a catalog of some 10^5 proper motions, with 53,382 high-quality measurements in a central field. We determine the cluster center to ~1-arcsecond accuracy using two different star-count methods, and a completely independent method using 2MASS images. We also determine the kinematical center of the proper motions, which agree…
[Abbreviated] We have investigated the color-magnitude diagram of Omega Centauri and find that the blue main sequence (bMS) can be reproduced only by models that have a of helium abundance in the range Y=0.35-$0.40. To explain the faint subgiant branch of the reddest stars ("MS-a/RG-a" sequence), isochrones for the observed metallicity ([Fe/H]\approx0.7) appear to require both a high age (~13Gyr) and enhanced CNO abundances ([CNO/Fe]\approx0.9$). Y~0.35 must also be assumed in order to counteract the effects of high CNO on turnoff colors, and thereby to obtain a good fit to the relatively blue…
We investigate the formation processes of the Galactic globular cluster (GC) omega Cen with multiple stellar populations based on our original hydrodynamical simulations with chemical enrichment by Type II supernovae (SNe II), asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, and neutron star mergers (NSMs). The principal results are as follows. Multiple stellar populations with a wide range of [Fe/H] can be formed from rather massive and compact molecular cloud with a mass of 2 * 10^7 M_sun in the central region of its dwarf galaxy within less than a few hundred Myr. Gas ejected from SNe II and AGB stars …
We present a detailed dynamical analysis of the projected density and kinematical data available for the globular cluster Omega Cen. We solve the spherical anisotropic Jeans equation to predict the projected profiles of the RMS velocity in each of the three orthogonal coordinate directions (line of sight, proper motion radial, and proper motion tangential). We fit the models to new HST star count and proper motion data near the cluster center presented in Paper I, combined with existing ground-based measurements. We also derive and model the Gauss-Hermite moments of the observed proper motion …
We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of RR Lyrae (RRL) variables in the globular cluster NGC 5139 (omega Cen). We collected optical (4580-5330 A), high resolution (R = 34,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (200) spectra for 113 RRLs with the multi-fiber spectrograph M2FS at the Magellan/Clay Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We also analysed high resolution (R = 26,000) spectra for 122 RRLs collected with FLAMES/GIRAFFE at the VLT, available in the ESO archive. The current sample doubles the literature abundances of cluster and field RRLs in the Milky Way based on high resolution sp…
