Using a new, expanded compilation of extragalactic source Faraday rotation measures (RM) we investigate the broad underlying magnetic structure of the Galactic disk at latitudes $|b|$ $\lesssim 15^{\circ}$ over all longitudes $l$, where our total number of RM's in this low-latitude range of the Galactic sky is comparable to those in the combined Canadian Galactic Plane Survey(CGPS) at $|b| < 4^{\circ}$ and the Southern Galactic Plane (SGPS) $|b| < 1.5^{\circ}$ survey. We report newly revealed, remarkably coherent patterns of RM at $|b|$ $\lesssim 15^{\circ}$ from $l \sim 270^{\circ}$ to $\sim 90^\circ$ and RM($l$) features of unprecedented clarity that replicate in $l$ with opposite sign on opposite sides of the Galactic center. They confirm a highly patterned bisymmetric field structure toward the inner disc, an axisymmetic pattern toward the outer disc, and a very close coupling between the CGPS/SGPS RM's at $|b| \lesssim 3^{\circ}$ ("mid-plane") and our new RM's up to $|b| \sim 15^{\circ}$ ("near-plane").
Our analysis also shows the approximate $z$-height -- the vertical height of the coherent component of the disc field above the Galactic disc's mid-plane -- to be $\sim 1.5$kpc out to $\sim 6$ kpc from the Sun. This identifies the approximate height of the transition layer to the halo field structure. We find no RM sign change across the plane within $|b| \sim 15^{\circ}$ in any longitude range. The prevailing {\it disc} field pattern, and its striking degree of large scale ordering confirm that our side of the Milky Way has a very organized underlying magnetic structure, for which the inward spiral pitch angle is $5.5^{\circ}\, \pm 1^{\circ}$ at all $|b|$ up to $\sim 12^{\circ}$ in the inner semicircle of Galactic longitudes. It decreases to $\sim 0^{\circ}$ toward the anticentre.
The temporal stability of millisecond pulsars is remarkable, rivaling even some terrestrial atomic clocks at long timescales. Using this property, we show that millisecond pulsars distributed in the galactic neighborhood form an ensemble of accelerometers from which we can directly extract the local galactic acceleration. From pulsar spin period measurements, we demonstrate acceleration sensitivity with about 1$σ$ precision using 117 pulsars. We also present results from a complementary analysis using orbital periods of 13 binary pulsar systems that eliminates systematics associated with pulsa…
Recent observations have revealed remarkable insights into the gas reservoir in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxy haloes. In this paper, we characterise the gas in the vicinity of Milky Way and Andromeda analogues in the HESTIA (High resolution Environmental Simulations of The Immediate Area) suite of constrained Local Group (LG) simulations. The HESTIA suite comprise of a set of three high-resolution {\sc arepo}-based simulations of the LG, run using the Auriga galaxy formation model. For this paper, we focus only on the $z = 0$ simulation datasets and generate mock skymaps along with…
We describe a new phenomenon of `bar damping' that may have played an important role in shaping the Milky Way bar and bulge as well as its spiral structure. We use a collisionless N-body simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy initially composed of a dark matter halo and an exponential disk with Toomre parameter slightly above unity. In this configuration, dominated by the disk in the center, a bar forms relatively quickly, after 1 Gyr of evolution. This is immediately followed by the formation of two manifold-driven spiral arms and the outflow of stars that modifies the potential in the vicinit…
We analyse the structure and chemical enrichment of a Milky Way-like galaxy with a stellar mass of 2 10^{10} M_sun, formed in a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. It is disk-dominated with a flat rotation curve, and has a disk scale length similar to the Milky Way's, but a velocity dispersion that is ~50% higher. Examining stars in narrow [Fe/H] and [α/Fe] abundance ranges, we find remarkable qualitative agreement between this simulation and observations: a) The old stars lie in a thickened distribution with a short scale length, while the young stars form a thinner disk, with scale lengt…
We present the discovery of a faint Milky Way satellite, Laevens 2/Triangulum II, found in the Panoramic Survey Telescope And Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS 1) 3 pi imaging data and confirmed with follow-up wide-field photometry from the Large Binocular Cameras. The stellar system, with an absolute magnitude of M_V=-1.8 +/-0.5, a heliocentric distance of 30 +2/-2 kpc, and a half-mass radius of 34 +9/-8 pc, shows remarkable similarity to faint, nearby, small satellites such as Willman 1, Segue 1, Segue 2, and Boötes II. The discovery of Laevens 2/Triangulum II further populates the region of…
We present a method to obtain reddening maps and to trace structure and metallicity gradients of the bulge using data from the recently started ESO public survey Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV). We derive the mean J-Ks color of the red clump (RC) giants in 1835 subfields in the Bulge region with -8<b<-0.4 and 0.2<l<1.7, and compare it to the color of RC stars in Baade's Window for which we adopt E(B-V)=0.55. This allows us to derive the reddening map on a small enough scale to minimize the problems arising from differential extinction. The dereddened magnitudes are then used to build t…
In this paper, we aim to estimate the vertical gradients in the rotational velocity of the Galaxy. This is carried out in the framework of a global thin disc model approximation. The predicted gradient values coincide with the observed vertical fall-off in the rotation curve of the Galaxy. The gradient is estimated based on a statistical analysis of trajectories of test bodies in the gravitational field of the disc and in an analytical way using a quasi-circular orbit approximation. The agreement of the results with the gradient measurements is remarkable in view of other more complicated, non…
Chemical bimodality of the Milky Way (MW) disc stars constitutes one of the most remarkable properties of MW. The cold accretion theory for the cosmological gas accretion provides one viable explanation to this phenomenon. In this scenario, the rapid cold-mode accretion in the early epoch creates the first generation stars relatively rich in $α$-elements(O,Mg,Si,S,Ca,etc) and later cooling flow produces iron-rich second generation stars, creating the bimodality in the [$α$/Fe] ratio. We employ a cosmologically motivated chemical evolution model for disc galaxies to elucidate the role played by…
We investigate the formation history of the stellar disk component in the Milky Way (MW) based on our new chemical evolution model. Our model considers several fundamental baryonic processes, including gas infall, re-accretion of outflowing gas, and radial migration of disk stars. Each of these baryonic processes in the disk evolution is characterized by model parameters, which are determined by fitting to various observational data of the stellar disk in the MW, including the radial dependence of the metallicity distribution function (MDF) of the disk stars, which has recently been derived in…
We report the detection of a strong Milky Way-type 2175 Å$ $ extinction bump at $z$ = 2.1166 in the quasar spectrum towards SDSS J121143.42+083349.7 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 10. We conduct follow up observations with the Echelle Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) onboard the Keck-II telescope and the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) on the VLT. This 2175 Å$ $ absorber is remarkable in that we simultaneously detect neutral carbon (C I), neutral chlorine (Cl I), and carbon monoxide (CO). It also qualifies as a damped Lyman alpha system. The J1211+0833 ab…
The central kiloparsecs of the Milky Way are known to host an old, spheroidal stellar population, whose spatial and kinematical properties set it apart from the boxy/peanut structure that constitutes most of the central stellar mass. The nature of this spheroidal population, whether a small classical bulge, the innermost stellar halo or a population of disk stars with large initial velocity dispersion, remains unclear. This structure is also a promising candidate to host some of the oldest stars in the Galaxy. Here we address the topic of the inner stellar spheroid age, using spectroscopic and…
It has been recently demonstrated that both, a classical Schwarzschild black hole (BH), and a dense concentration of self-gravitating fermionic dark matter (DM) placed at the Galaxy centre, can explain the precise astrometric data (positions and radial velocities) of the S-stars orbiting SgrA*. This result encompasses the 17 best resolved S-stars, and includes the test of general relativistic effects such as the gravitational redshift in the S2-star. In addition, the DM model features another remarkable result: the dense core of fermions is the central region of a continuous density distributi…

RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) are tracers of the Milky Way's fossil record, holding valuable information on its formation and early evolution. Owing to the high interstellar extinction endemic to the Galactic plane, distant RRLs lying at low Galactic latitudes have been elusive. We attained a census of 1892 high-confidence RRLs by exploiting the near-infrared photometric database of the VVV survey's disk footprint spanning $\sim$70$^\circ$ of Galactic longitude, using a machine-learned classifier. Novel data-driven methods were employed to accurately characterize their spatial distribution using spars…
We have derived absolute proper motions of the entire Galactic bulge region from VIRAC and Gaia. We present these as both integrated on-sky maps and, after isolating standard candle red clump (RC) stars, as a function of distance using RC magnitude as a proxy. These data provide a new global, 3-dimensional view of the Milky Way barred bulge kinematics. We find a gradient in the mean longitudinal proper motion, $<μ_l^\star>$, between the different sides of the bar, which is sensitive to the bar pattern speed. The split RC has distinct proper motions and is colder than other stars at similar dis…
Based on observations with the IRAM 30-m and Yebes 40-m telescopes, we report evidence of the detection of Milky Way-like, low-excitation molecular gas, up to the transition CO($J=5-4$), in a distant, dusty star-forming galaxy at $z_{CO}=1.60454$. WISE J122651.0+214958.8 (alias SDSSJ1226, the Cosmic Seahorse), is strongly lensed by a foreground galaxy cluster at $z=0.44$ with a source magnification of $μ=9.5\pm0.7$. This galaxy was selected by cross-correlating near-to-mid infrared colours within the full-sky AllWISE survey, originally aiming to discover rare analogs of the archetypical strong…
Recent numerical simulations of globular clusters (GCs) have shown that stellar-mass black holes (BHs) play a fundamental role in driving cluster evolution and shaping their present-day structure. Rapidly mass-segregating to the center of GCs, BHs act as a dynamical energy source via repeated super-elastic scattering, delaying onset of core collapse and limiting mass segregation for visible stars. While recent discoveries of BH candidates in Galactic and extragalactic GCs have further piqued interest in BH-mediated cluster dynamics, numerical models show that even if significant BH populations…
We present the structure of the Milky Way stellar halo beyond Galactocentric distances of $r = 50$ kpc traced by blue horizontal-branch (BHB) stars, which are extracted from the survey data in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). We select BHB candidates based on $(g,r,i,z)$ photometry, where the $z$-band is on the Paschen series and the colors that involve the $z$-band are sensitive to surface gravity. About 450 BHB candidates are identified between $r = 50$ kpc and 300 kpc, most of which are beyond the reach of previous large surveys including the Sloan Digital Sky Surve…

We present distributions of two molecular clouds having velocities of 2 km s$^{-1}$ and 14 km s$^{-1}$ toward RCW 38, the youngest super star cluster in the Milky Way, in the $^{12}$CO ($J=$1--0 and 3--2) and $^{13}$CO ($J=$1--0) transitions. The two clouds are likely physically associated with the cluster as verified by the high intensity ratio of the $J$=3--2 emission to the $J$=1--0 emission, the bridging feature connecting the two clouds in velocity and their morphological correspondence with the infrared dust emission. The total mass of the clouds and the cluster is too small to gravitati…
We study the abundance of satellite galaxies around 198 Milky Way- (MW) and M31-like hosts in TNG50, the final instalment in the IllustrisTNG suite of cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulations. MW/M31-like analogues are defined as disky galaxies with stellar masses of Mstar = 10^10.5-11.2 Msun in relative isolation at z = 0. By defining satellites as galaxies with Mstar > 5*10^6 Msun within 300 kpc (3D) of their host, we find a remarkable level of diversity and host-to-host scatter across individual host galaxies. The median (16th - 84th percentiles) TNG50 MW/M31-like galaxy hosts a total…
We present a semi-empirical, largely model-independent approach for estimating Galactic birth radii, r_birth, for Milky Way disk stars. The technique relies on the justifiable assumption that a negative radial metallicity gradient in the interstellar medium (ISM) existed for most of the disk lifetime. Stars are projected back to their birth positions according to the observationally derived age and [Fe/H] with no kinematical information required. Applying our approach to the AMBRE:HARPS and HARPS-GTO local samples, we show that we can constrain the ISM metallicity evolution with Galactic radiu…
We undertake an investigation into the spatial structure of the M31 satellite system utilizing the distance distributions presented in a previous publication. These distances make use of the unique combination of depth and spatial coverage of the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS) to provide a large, homogeneous sample consisting of 27 of M31's satellites, as well as M31 itself. We find that the satellite distribution, when viewed as a whole, is no more planar than one would expect from a random distribution of equal size. A disk consisting of 15 of the satellites is however found to…

We use models of stellar angular momentum evolution to determine ages for $\sim500$ stars in the APOGEE-\textit{Kepler} Cool Dwarfs sample. We focus on lower main-sequence stars, where other age-dating tools become ineffective. Our age distributions are compared to those derived from asteroseismic and giant samples and solar analogs. We are able to recover gyrochronological ages for old, lower-main-sequence stars, a remarkable improvement over prior work in hotter stars. Under our model assumptions, our ages have a median relative uncertainty of $14\%$, comparable to the age precision inferred…
We obtained FLAMES-GIRAFFE spectra (R=22,500) at the ESO Very Large Telescope for 650 bulge red giant branch (RGB) stars and performed spectral synthesis to measure Mg, Ca, Ti, and Si abundances. This sample is composed of 474 giant stars observed in 3 fields along the minor axis of the Galactic bulge and at latitudes b=-4, b=-6, b=-12. Another 176 stars belong to a field containing the globular cluster NGC 6553, located at b=-3 and 5 degrees away from the other three fields along the major axis. Our results confirm, with large number statistics, the chemical similarity between the Galactic bu…
The hierarchical theory of galaxy formation rests on the idea that smaller galactic structures merge to form the galaxies that we see today. The past decade has provided remarkable observational support for this scenario, driven in part by advances in spectroscopic instrumentation. Multi-object spectroscopy enabled the discovery of kinematically cold substructures around the Milky Way and M31 that are likely the debris of disrupting satellites. Improvements in high-resolution spectroscopy have produced key evidence that the abundance patterns of the Milky Way halo and its dwarf satellites can …
We investigate the chemo-kinematic properties of the Milky Way disc by exploring the first year of data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE), and compare our results to smaller optical high-resolution samples in the literature, as well as results from lower resolution surveys such as GCS, SEGUE and RAVE. We start by selecting a high-quality sample in terms of chemistry ($\sim$ 20.000 stars) and, after computing distances and orbital parameters for this sample, we employ a number of useful subsets to formulate constraints on Galactic chemical and chemodynamic…
Recent knowledge of Galactic dynamics suggests that stars radially move on the disk when they encounter transient spiral arms that are naturally generated during the process of disk formation. We argue that a large movement of the solar system from the innermost disk over its lifetime is inferred from a comparison of the solar composition with those of solar twins within the Galactic chemical evolution framework. The implied metal-rich environment at the Sun's birthplace and formation time is supported by measured silicon isotopic ratios in presolar silicon carbide grains. We perform numerical…
