We analyse the internal dynamics of star-forming HII regions and their efficiency in interacting with the ISM. We use GHaFaS (Fabry-Perot) data of the nearby spiral galaxy M83 to perform multiple-Gaussian fitting to the integrated Halpha emission line for 136 HII regions, advanced instrumental response subtraction and to study the Luminosity-velocity dispersion relation. We find that the best way of dealing with instrumental response effects is convolving its actual shape with the Gaussian before fitting and that in our data almost none of the regions need a secondary Gaussian.

Studying the interstellar medium of HII/BCD galaxies using IFU spectroscopy

We review the results from our studies, and previous published work, on the spatially resolved physical properties of a sample of HII/BCD galaxies, as obtained mainly from integral-field unit spectroscopy with Gemini/GMOS and VLT/VIMOS. We confirm that, within observational uncertainties, our sample galaxies show nearly spatially constant chemical abundances, similar to other low-mass starburst galaxies. Gemini GMOS--IFU spectroscopy of the compact HII galaxies Tol 0104-388 and Tol 2146-391: The dependence on the properties of the interstellar medium

Using GMOS--IFU spectroscopic observations of the compact HII/BCD galaxies Tol 0104-388 and Tol 2146-391, we study the spatial distribution of emission lines, equivalent width EW(Hb), extinction c(Hb), ionization ratios ([OIII]5007/Hb, [SII]6717,6731/Ha and [NII]6584/Ha), kinematics, and the chemical pattern (O/H, N/H and N/O) of the warm interstellar medium in these galaxies. We also investigate a possible dependence of these properties on the I(HeII4686)/I(Hb) ratio and find no significant correlation between these variables. The Abundance Scatter in M33 from HII Regions: Is There Any Evidence for Azimuthal Metallicity Variations?

Optical spectra of 25 H II regions in the inner two kpc of the M33 disk have been obtained with the GMOS spectrograph at the Gemini North telescope. The oxygen abundance gradient measured from the detection of the [O III]4363 auroral line displays a scatter of approximately 0.06 dex, a much smaller value than recently reported by Rosolowsky & Simon in this galaxy. Scaling Relations of Star-Forming Regions: from kpc-size clumps to HII regions

We present the properties of 8 star-forming regions, or 'clumps,' in 3 galaxies at z~1.3 from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, which are resolved with the OSIRIS integral field spectrograph. Within turbulent discs, σ~90 km/s, clumps are measured with average sizes of 1.5 kpc and average Jeans masses of 4.2 x 10^9 \Msolar, in total accounting for 20-30 per cent of the stellar mass of the discs. [NII] fine-structure emission at 122 and 205um in a galaxy at z=2.6: a globally dense star-forming interstellar medium

We present new observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array of the 122um and 205um fine-structure line emission of singly-ionised nitrogen in a strongly lensed starburst galaxy at z=2.6. Modeling High-Mass Star Formation and Ultracompact HII Regions

Massive stars influence the surrounding universe far out of proportion to their numbers through ionizing radiation, supernova explosions, and heavy element production. Their formation requires the collapse of massive interstellar gas clouds with very high accretion rates. Star Formation in Relic HII Regions of the First Stars: Binarity and Outflow Driving

Star formation in relic HII regions of the first stars is investigated using magneto-hydrodynamical simulations with a nested grid method that covers 10 orders of magnitude in spatial scale and 20 orders of magnitude in density contrast. The nature of the interstellar medium of the starburst low-metallicity galaxy Haro11: a multi-phase model of the infrared emission

(abridged) Our goal is to describe the multi-phase ISM of the IR bright low-metallicity galaxy Haro 11, dissecting the photoionised and photodissociated gas components. We present observations of the mid- and far-IR fine-structure cooling lines obtained with the Spitzer/IRS and Herschel/PACS spectrometers. We present numerical methods for including stellar feedback in galaxy-scale simulations. We include heating by SNe (I & II), gas recycling and shock-heating from O-star & AGB winds, HII photoionization, and radiation pressure from stellar photons.
