We investigate the recent and current star formation activity of galaxies as function of distance from the cluster center in a sample of 521 SDSS clusters at z<0.1. We show that when the BCGs are excluded from the galaxy sample, there is no evidence for mass segregation in the clusters, so that differences in cluster and field populations cannot simply be attributed to different mass functions. We find a marked star formation-radius relation in that almost all galaxies in the cluster core are quiescent, i.e. have terminated star formation a few Gyr ago. This star formation-radius relation is most pronounced for low-mass galaxies and is very weak or absent beyond the virial radius. The typical star formation rate of non-quiescent galaxies declines by approximately a factor of two towards the cluster center. However, the fraction of galaxies with young stellar populations indicating a recently completed starburst or a truncation of star formation does not vary significantly with radius. The fraction of star-forming galaxies which host a powerful optical AGN is also independent of clustercentric radius, indicating that the link between star formation and AGN in these galaxies operates independent of environment. The fraction of red galaxies which host a weak optical AGN decreases, however, towards the cluster center, with a similar timescale as the decline of star forming galaxies. Our results favor a scenario in which star formation is quenched slowly, on timescales similar to the cluster crossing time, and rule out significant contributions from more violent processes at least beyond cluster radii >0.1 R_200.
We present our analysis of the three HII-buried-AGN: SDSS J091053+333008, SDSS J121837+091324, and SDSS J153002-020415, by studying their optical spectra extracted from SDSS. The location in the BPT diagnostic diagrams of the three galaxies indicates that the narrow emission lines are mainly exited from HII regions. However, after the removal of the host galaxy's stellar emission, the emission lines display the typical feature of Narrow-line Seyfert 1-like. All of the three objects have large Eddington ratio, small black hole mass, and low star formation rate. We propose that the three galaxie…
We apply a stellar population synthesis code to the spectra of a large sample of SDSS galaxies to classify these according to their activity (using emission-line diagnostic diagrams), environment (using catalogues of isolated and cluster galaxies), and using parameters that correlate with their morphology.
We present XMM observations of the AGN SDSS 1430-0011. The low S/N spectrum of this source obtained in a snap shot Chandra observation showed an unusually flat continuum. With the follow up XMM observations we find that the source spectrum is complex; it either has an ionized absorber or a partially covering absorber. The underlying power-law is in the normal range observed for AGNs. The low luminosity of the source during Chandra observations can be understood in terms of variations in the absorber properties. The X-ray and optical properties of this source are such that it cannot be securely…
Mateos et al. (2012) presented a highly reliable and efficient mid-infrared (MIR) colour-based selection technique for luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) survey. Here we evaluate the effectiveness of this technique to identify obscured AGN missed in X-ray surveys. To do so we study the WISE properties of AGN independently selected in hard X-ray and optical surveys. We use the largest catalogue of 887 [O III]λ5007-selected type 2 quasars (QSO2s) at z<0.83 in the literature from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the 258 hard (>4.5 keV) X-ra…
As the third paper of our serial studies that are aim at examining the AGN-host coevolution by using partially obscured AGNs, we extend the broad-line composite galaxies (composite AGNs) into ROSAT-selected Seyfert 1.8/1.9 galaxies basing upon the RASS/SDSS-DR5 catalog given by Anderson et al.. The SDSS spectra of in total 92 objects are analyzed by the same method used in our previous studies, after requiring the signal-to-noise ratio in the SDSS r' band is larger than 20. Combing the ROSAT-selected Seyfert galaxies with the composite AGNs reinforces the tight correlation between the line rat…
With the main goal of finding bulgeless galaxies harbouring super massive black holes and showing, at most, just residual star formation activity, we have selected a sample of massive bulgeless red sequence galaxies from the SDSS-DR7, based on the NYU-VAGC catalogue. Multivavelength data were retrieved using EURO-VO tools, and the objects are characterised in terms of degree of star formation and the presence of an AGN. We have found seven objects that are quenched massive galaxies, that have no prominent bulge and that show signs of extra activity in their nuclei, five of them being central i…
Most massive galaxies contain supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in their cores. When galaxies merge, gas is driven to nuclear regions and can accrete onto the central black hole. Thus one expects to see dual AGN in a fraction of galaxy mergers. Candidates for galaxies containing dual AGN have been identified by the presence of double-peaked narrow [O III] emission lines and by high spatial resolution images of close galaxy pairs. Spatially-resolved spectroscopy is needed to confirm these galaxy pairs as systems with spatially-separated double SMBHs. With the Keck 2 Laser Guide Star Adaptive Opt…
Massive spectroscopic surveys like the SDSS have revolutionized the way we study AGN and their relations to the galaxies they live in. A first step in any such study is to define samples of different types of AGN on the basis of emission line ratios. This deceivingly simple step involves decisions on which classification scheme to use and data quality censorship. Galaxies with weak emission lines are often left aside or dealt with separately because one cannot fully classify them onto the standard Star-Forming, Seyfert of LINER categories. This contribution summarizes alternative classificatio…
We study 203 (of 442) Swift AGN and Cluster Survey extended X-ray sources located in the SDSS DR8 footprint to search for galaxy over-densities in three dimensional space using SDSS galaxy photometric redshifts and positions near the Swift cluster candidates. We find 104 Swift clusters with a >3sigma galaxy over-density. The remaining targets are potentially located at higher redshifts and require deeper optical follow-up observations for confirmation as galaxy clusters. We present a series of cluster properties including the redshift, BCG magnitude, BCG-to-X-ray center offset, optical richnes…
Striking similarities have been seen between accretion signatures of Galactic X-ray binary (XRB) systems and active galactic nuclei (AGN). XRB spectral states show a V-shaped correlation between X-ray spectral hardness and Eddington ratio as they vary, and some AGN samples reveal a similar trend, implying analogous processes at vastly larger masses and timescales. To further investigate the analogies, we have matched 617 sources from the Chandra Source Catalog to SDSS spectroscopy, and uniformly measured both X-ray and optical spectral characteristics across a broad range of AGN and galaxy typ…
We discuss the nature and origin of the nuclear activity observed in a sample of 292 SDSS narrow-emission-line galaxies, considered to have formed and evolved in isolation. All these galaxies are spiral like and show some kind of nuclear activity. The fraction of Narrow Line AGNs (NLAGNs) and Transition type Objects (TOs; a NLAGN with circumnuclear star formation) is relatively high, amounting to 64% of the galaxies. There is a definite trend for the NLAGNs to appear in early-type spirals, while the star forming galaxies and TOs are found in later-type spirals. We verify that the probability f…
With upcoming all sky surveys such as LSST poised to generate a deep digital movie of the optical sky, variability-based AGN selection will enable the construction of highly-complete catalogs with minimum contamination. In this study, we generate $g$-band difference images and construct light curves for QSO/AGN candidates listed in SDSS Stripe 82 public catalogs compiled from different methods, including spectroscopy, optical colors, variability, and X-ray detection. Image differencing excels at identifying variable sources embedded in complex or blended emission regions such as Type II AGNs a…
We report on the study of an intriguing active galaxy that was selected as a potential multiple supermassive black hole merger in the early-type host SDSS J151709.20+335324.7 (z=0.135). Ground-based SDSS imaging reveals two blue structures on either side of the photometric center of the host galaxy, separated from each other by about 5.7 kpc. The analysis of spatially resolved emission line profiles from a Keck/HIRES spectrum reveal three distinct kinematic subcomponents, one at rest and the other two moving at -350 km/s and 500 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of the host galaxy. A …
We present first pc-scale radio imaging of the radio-quiet candidate binary black hole system SDSS J1536+0441. The observations were carried out by the European VLBI Network at the frequency of 5 GHz and allowed to image SDSS J1536+0441 with a resolution of about 10 mas (50 pc). Two compact radio cores are detected at the position of the kpc-scale components VLA-A and VLA-B, proving the presence of two compact active nuclei with radio luminosity about 10^{40} erg/s, thus ruling out the possibility that the two radio sources are both powered by one 0.1 pc binary black hole. From a comparison wi…
Using the LOWZ and CMASS samples of the ninth data release (DR9) from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), I investigate properties of star forming galaxies and AGNs. The CMASS sample seriously suffers from the radial selection effect, even within the redshift 0.44<z<0.6, which will lead to statistical conclusions in the CMASS sample being less likely robust. In the LOWZ sample, the fraction of star-forming galaxies is nearly constant from the lowest density regime to the densest regime; the AGN fraction is also insensitive to the local environment. In addition, I note …
We present high spectral resolution VLT observations of the BAL quasar SDSS J0318-0600. This high quality data set allows us to extract accurate ionic column densities and determine an electron number density of n_e=10^3.3 +/- 0.2 cm^-3 for the main outflow absorption component. The heavily reddened spectrum of SDSS J0318-0600 requires purely silicate dust with a reddening curve characteristic of predominately large grains, from which we estimate the bolometric luminosity. We carry out photoionization modeling to determine the total column density, ionization parameter and distance of the gas …
We determine the intrinsic shapes and orientations of 27,450 type I and II active galactic nucleus (AGN) galaxies in the spectroscopic sample of the SDSS DR7, by studying the distribution of projected axis ratios of AGN hosts. Our aim is to study possible alignments between the AGN and host galaxy systems (e.g. the accretion disc and the galaxy angular momentum) and the effect of dust obscuration geometry on the AGN type. We define control samples of non-AGN galaxies that mimic the morphology, colour, luminosity and concentration distributions of the AGN population, taking into account the eff…
The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) has completed its all-sky survey at 3.4-22 micron. We merge the WISE data with optical SDSS data and provide a phenomenological characterization of mid-IR, extragalactic sources. WISE is most sensitive at 3.4micron(W1) and least at 22micron(W4). The W1 band probes massive early-type galaxies out to z\gtrsim1. This is more distant than SDSS identified early-type galaxies, consistent with the fact that 28% of 3.4micron sources have faint or no r-band counterparts (r>22.2). In contrast, 92-95% of 12 and 22micron sources have SDSS optical counterparts…
We investigate the connection between starburst and AGN activity by comparing the 3.3 μm PAH eimission with AGN properties. Utilizing the slit-less spectroscopic capability of the AKARI space telescope, we observe moderate-luminosity Type I AGN at z~0.4 to measure global starburst activity. The 3.3 μm PAH emissions are detected for 7 out of 26 target galaxies. We find no strong correlation between the 3.3 μm PAH emission and AGN luminosity in the limted range of the observed AGN luminosity, suggesting that global star formation may not be tightly related with AGN activity. Combining our measur…
In a sample of 476931 NELGs obtained from the SDSS DR5 data we find that in 22% of the galaxies the emission line [OIII]$λ$5007, H$β$, or both, are missing. The nature of the activity in these galaxies was determined using a diagnostic diagram comparing the equivalent width of [NII]$λ$6584 with the ratio [NII]$λ$6584/H$α$. The majority of these galaxies are AGN. The H$α$ emission lines have a mean FWHM of 400 km s$^{-1}$ and mean luminosity of 5.6$\times$10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which justify their classification as LLAGN. A study of their star formation histories using STARLIGHT reveals no tra…
We detect and study the properties of faint radio AGN in Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs). The LRG sample comprises 760,000 objects from a catalog of LRG photometric redshifts constructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) imaging data, and 65,000 LRGs from the SDSS spectroscopic sample. These galaxies have typical 1.4 GHz flux densities in the 10s-100s of microJy, with the contribution from a low-luminosity AGN dominating any contribution from star formation. To probe the radio properties of such faint objects, we employ a stacking technique whereby FIRST survey image cutouts at each optica…
We present AGN from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) having double-peaked profiles of [OIII] 5007,4959 and other narrow emission-lines, motivated by the prospect of finding candidate binary AGN. These objects were identified by means of a visual examination of 21,592 quasars at z < 0.7 in SDSS Data Release 7 (DR7). Of the spectra with adequate signal-to-noise, 148 spectra exhibit a double-peaked [OIII] profile. Of these, 86 are Type 1 AGN and 62 are Type 2 AGN. Only two give the appearance of possibly being optically resolved double AGN in the SDSS images, but many show close companions or …
We study the effects of radio jets on galaxies in their vicinity (satellites) and the role of satellites in triggering radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The study compares the aggregate properties of satellites of a sample of 7,220 radio AGNs at z < 0.3 (identified by Best & Heckman 2012 from the SDSS and NVSS+FIRST surveys) to the satellites of a control sample of radio-quiet galaxies, which are matched in redshift, color, luminosity, and axis ratio, as well as by environment type: field galaxies, cluster members and brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). Remarkably, we find that radio AG…
The clustering properties of moderate luminosity ($L_X = \rm 10^{41} - 10^{44} \, erg \,s^{-1}$) X-ray selected AGN at $z\approx0.1$ are explored. X-ray sources in the redshift interval $0.03<z<0.2$ are selected from a serendipitous XMM survey of the SDSS footprint (XMM/SDSS) and are cross-correlated with the SDSS Main galaxy sample. The inferred X-ray AGN auto-correlation function is described by a power law with amplitude $r_0\approx5\,$h$^{-1}$Mpc and slope $γ\approx2.0$. The corresponding mass of the dark matter haloes that host X-ray AGN at $z\approx0.1$ is $\approx 10^{13} \,h ^{-1} \, M…
We have analyzed the {\it XMM-Newton} and {\it Chandra} data overlapping $\sim$16.5 deg$^2$ of Sloan Digital Sky Survey Stripe 82, including $\sim$4.6 deg$^2$ of proprietary {\it XMM-Newton} data that we present here. In total, 3362 unique X-ray sources are detected at high significance. We derive the {\it XMM-Newton} number counts and compare them with our previously reported {\it Chandra} Log$N$-Log$S$ relations and other X-ray surveys. The Stripe 82 X-ray source lists have been matched to multi-wavelength catalogs using a maximum likelihood estimator algorithm. We discovered the highest red…
Galaxy-galaxy mergers and close interactions have long been regarded as a viable mechanism for channeling gas toward the central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of galaxies which are triggered as active galactic nuclei (AGNs). AGN pairs, in which the central SMBHs of a galaxy merger are both active, are expected to be common from such events. We conduct a systematic study of 1286 AGN pairs at z ~ 0.1 with line-of-sight velocity offsets dv < 600 km/s and projected separations r_p < 100 kpc, selected from the Seventh Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This AGN pair sample was …
Using two volume-limited Main galaxy samples of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), we explore influences of galaxy interactions on AGN activity. It is found that in the faint volume-limited sample, paired galaxies have a slightly higher AGN fraction than isolated galaxies, whereas in the luminous volume-limited sample, an opposite trend can be observed. The significance is <1 sigma. Thus, we do not observe strong evidence that interactions or mergers likely trigger the AGN activity.
We use the W_Ha versus [NII]/Ha (WHAN) diagram to provide a comprehensive emission-line classification of SDSS galaxies. This classification is able to cope with the large population of weak line galaxies that do not appear in traditional diagrams due to a lack of some of the diagnostic lines. A further advantage of the WHAN diagram is to allow the differentiation between two very distinct classes that overlap in the LINER region of traditional diagnostic diagrams. These are galaxies hosting a weakly active nucleus (wAGN) and "retired galaxies" (RGs), i.e. galaxies that have stopped forming st…
The enormous amounts of infrared (IR) radiation emitted by luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs, L_IR=10^11-10^12Lsun) and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, L_IR>10^12Lsun) are produced by dust heated by intense star formation (SF) activity and/or an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The elevated star formation rates and high AGN incidence in (U)LIRGs make them ideal candidates to study the interplay between SF and AGN activity in the local universe. In this paper I review recent results on the physical extent of the SF activity, the AGN detection rate (including buried AGN), the AGN bolometr…
We present a study of Broad Absorption Line (BAL) quasar outflows that show S IV ?1063 and S IV* ?1073 troughs. The fractional abundance of S IV and C IV peak at similar value of the ionization parameter, implying that they arise from the same physical component of the outflow. Detection of the S IV* troughs will allow us to determine the distance to this gas with higher resolution and higher signal-to-noise spectra, therefore providing the distance and energetics of the ubiquitous C IV BAL outflows. In our bright sample of 156 SDSS quasars 14% show C IV and 1.9% S IV troughs, which is consist…
We investigate the clustering properties of ~1550 broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at <z>=0.25 detected in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) through their measured cross-correlation function with ~46,000 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. By measuring the cross-correlation of our AGN sample with a larger tracer set of LRGs, we both minimize shot noise errors due to the relatively small AGN sample size and avoid systematic errors due to the spatially varying Galactic absorption that would affect direct measurements of the auto-correlation function (ACF) of the A…
We cross-matched Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) sources brighter than 1 mJy at 12um with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxy spectroscopic catalog to produce a sample of ~10^5 galaxies at <z>=0.08, the largest of its kind. This sample is dominated (70%) by star-forming (SF) galaxies from the blue sequence, with total IR luminosities in the range ~10^8-10^12 L_sun. We identify which stellar populations are responsible for most of the 12um emission. We find that most (~80%) of the 12um emission in SF galaxies is produced by stellar populations younger than 0.6 Gyr. In contrast…
We present a follow-up study of a series of papers concerning the role of close interactions as a possible triggering mechanism of the activity of AGN and starburst (SB) galaxies. We have already studied the close (<100 kpc) and the large scale (<1 Mpc) environment of Sy1, Sy2 and Bright IRAS galaxies and their respective control samples (Koulouridis et al.). The results led us to the conclusion that a close encounter appears capable of activating a sequence where a normal galaxy becomes first a starburst, then a Sy2 and finally a Sy1 galaxy. However since both galaxies of an interacting pair …
With the aim of investigating galaxies with two strong simultaneous starbursts, we have extracted a sample of galaxies with double-peaked emission lines in their global spectra from the SDSS spectral database. We then fitted the emission lines Halpha, Hbeta, [OIII]5007, [NII]6584, [SII]6717 and [SII]6731 of 129 spectra by two Gaussians to separate the radiation of the two (blue and red) components. A more or less reliable decomposition of the all those emission lines have been found for 55 spectra. Using a standard BPT classification diagram, we have been able to divide the galaxies from our s…
A new serendipitous XMM survey in the area of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey is described (XMM/SDSS), which includes features such as the merging of overlapping fields to increase the sensitivity to faint sources, the use of a new parametrisation of the XMM point spread function for the source detection and photometry, the accurate estimation of the survey sensitivity. About 40,000 X-ray point sources are detected over a total area of 122deg2. A subsample of 209 sources detected in the 2-8keV spectral band with SDSS spectroscopic redshifts in the range 0.03<z<0.2, optical magnitudes r<17.77mag a…
The radio-emitting quasar SDSS J1425+3231 (z=0.478) was recently found to have double-peaked narrow [O III] optical emission lines. Based on the analysis of the optical spectrum, Peng et al. (2011) suggested that this object harbours a dual active galactic nucleus (AGN) system, with two supermassive black holes (SMBHs) separated on the kpc scale. SMBH pairs should be ubiquitous according to hierarchical galaxy formation scenarios in which the host galaxies and their central black holes grow together via interactions and eventual mergers. Yet the number of presently-confirmed dual SMBHs on kpc …
The Baldwin, Phillips, and Terlevich emission-line ratio diagnostic ([OIII]/Hβ versus [NII]/Hα, hereafter BPT diagram) efficiently separates galaxies whose signal is dominated by star formation <BPT-SF> from those dominated by AGN activity (BPT-AGN). Yet this BPT diagram is limited to z < 0.5, the redshift at which [NII]λ6584 leaves the optical spectral window. Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we construct a new diagnostic, or TBT diagram, that is based on rest-frame g-z color, [NeIII]λ3869, and [OII]λλ3726 + 3729 and can be used for galaxies out to z < 1.4. The TBT diagram identifie…
We employ the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to study the fraction of X-ray-active galaxies in the field out to z = 0.7. We utilize spectroscopic redshifts from SDSS and ChaMP, as well as photometric redshifts from several SDSS catalogs, to compile a parent sample of more than 100,000 SDSS galaxies and nearly 1,600 Chandra X-ray detections. Detailed ChaMP volume completeness maps allow us to investigate the local fraction of active galactic nuclei (AGN), defined as those objects having broad-band X-ray luminosities L_X (0.5-8 keV) > 10^42 erg s^…
We measure the location and energetics of a SIV BALQSO outflow. This ouflow has a velocity of 10,800 km s$^{-1}$ and a kinetic luminosity of $10^{45.7}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is 5.2% of the Eddington luminosity of the quasar. From collisional excitation models of the observed SIV$/$SIV* absorption troughs, we measure a hydrogen number density of $n_\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle H}=10^{4.3}$ cm$^{-3}$, which allows us to determine that the outflow is located 110 pc from the quasar. Since SIV is formed in the same ionization phase as CIV, our results can be generalized to the ubiquitous CIV BALs. Our…
We present the mean spectral energy distribution (SED) of a sample of optically selected quasars (QSOs) at redshifts of $1 \le z \le 5$. To derive it, we exploit photometric information from SDSS, UKIDSS, and WISE surveys in combination with a stacking analysis of \textit{Herschel}, \textit{AKARI}, and \textit{Planck} maps at the location of the QSOs. The near-UV and optical parts of the reconstructed mean rest-frame SED are similar to those found in other studies. However, the SED shows an excess at 1-2 $μ$m (when compared to the aforementioned SEDs normalized in the near-UV) and a prominent …
We study the issue of AGN-host connection in intermediate-z (1.2>z>0.4) galaxies with hybrid spectra (hybrid QSOs for short). The observed spectra redward of the Balmer limit are dominated by starlight, and the spectra at blue end by both an AGN continuum and a MgII broad emission line. Such unique property allows us to examine both AGN and its host galaxy in individual galaxy simultaneously. At first, 15 hybrid QSOs are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6. The spectra are then analyzed in detail in three objects: SDSS J162446.49+461946.7, SDSS J102633.32+103443.8 and SDS…
In this paper, we investigate 2727 galaxies observed by MaNGA as of June 2016 to develop spatially resolved techniques for identifying signatures of active galactic nuclei (AGN). We identify 303 AGN candidates. The additional spatial dimension imposes challenges in identifying AGN due to contamination from diffuse ionized gas, extra-planar gas and photoionization by hot stars. We show that the combination of spatially-resolved line diagnostic diagrams and additional cuts on H$α$ surface brighness and H$α$ equivalent width can distinguish between AGN-like signatures and high-metallicity galaxie…
We present a detailed analysis of the Astrophysical Research Consortium 3.5 m telescope spectrum of QSO SDSS J0838+2955. The object shows three broad absorption line (BAL) systems at 22,000, 13,000, and 4900 km s^-1 blueshifted from the systemic redshift of z=2.043. Of particular interest is the lowest velocity system that displays absorption from low-ionization species such as Mg II, Al II, Si II, Si II*, Fe II and Fe II*. Accurate column densities were measured for all transitions in this lowest velocity BAL using an inhomogeneous absorber model. The ratio of column densities of Si II* and F…
We present a census of the active black hole population at 1<z<2, by constructing the bivariate distribution function of black hole mass and Eddington ratio, employing a maximum likelihood fitting technique. The study of the active black hole mass function (BHMF) and the Eddington ratio distribution function (ERDF) allows us to clearly disentangle the active galactic nuclei (AGN) downsizing phenomenon, present in the AGN luminosity function, into its physical processes of black hole mass downsizing and accretion rate evolution. We are utilizing type-1 AGN samples from three optical surveys (VV…
Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 4 (DR 4), we investigate the spatial distribution of low and high surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs and HSBGs, respectively). In particular, we focus our attention on the influence of interactions between galaxies on the star formation strength in the redshift range $0.01 < z < 0.1$. With cylinder counts and projected distance to the first and fifth-nearest neighbor as environment tracers, we find that LSBGs tend to have a lack of companions compared to HSBGs at small scales ($<2$ Mpc). Regarding the interactions, we have evidence that th…
We present the discovery of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) that is turning off and then on again in the z=0.06 galaxy SDSS J1354+1327. This episodic nuclear activity is the result of discrete accretion events, which could have been triggered by a past interaction with the companion galaxy that is currently located 12.5 kpc away. We originally targeted SDSS J1354+1327 because its Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectrum has narrow AGN emission lines that exhibit a velocity offset of 69 km s$^{-1}$ relative to systemic. To determine the nature of the galaxy and its velocity-offset emission lines, we …
The goal of this work is to study the obscuration properties of mid-infrared (mid-IR) selected AGN. For that purpose, we use {\it{WISE}} sources in the Stripe 82-XMM area to identify mid-IR AGN candidates, applying the Assef et al. criteria. Stripe 82 has optical photometry $\approx$\,2 times deeper than any single-epoch SDSS region. XMM-Newton observations cover $\sim$26\,deg$^2$. Applying the aforementioned criteria, 1946 IR AGN are selected. $\sim 78\%$ have SDSS detection, while 1/3 of them is detected in X-rays, at a flux limit of $\rm \sim 5 \times 10^{-15}\,erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}$. Our fi…
Two effects have substantially increased the scatter in the AGN black hole mass - host galaxy bulge luminosity relationship derived from SDSS spectra. The first is that at a fixed black hole mass, the SDSS spectrum depends strongly on redshift because an SDSS fiber sees a larger fraction of the total light of more distant galaxies. The second is that at a given redshift, the fraction of host-galaxy light in the fiber increases with decreasing galaxy luminosity. We illustrate the latter effect using the Kormendy et al. (2009) light profiles of Virgo ellipticals. With allowance for the two effec…
We discuss whether modern machine learning methods can be used to characterize the physical nature of the large number of objects sampled by the modern multi-band digital surveys. In particular, we applied the MLPQNA (Multi Layer Perceptron with Quasi Newton Algorithm) method to the optical data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey - Data Release 10, investigating whether photometric data alone suffice to disentangle different classes of objects as they are defined in the SDSS spectroscopic classification. We discuss three groups of classification problems: (i) the simultaneous classification of ga…
We have assembled the largest sample of ultra hard X-ray selected (14-195 keV) AGN with host galaxy optical data to date, with 185 nearby (z<0.05), moderate luminosity AGN from the Swift BAT sample. The BAT AGN host galaxies have intermediate optical colors (u-r and g-r) that are bluer than a comparison sample of inactive galaxies and optically selected AGN from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) which are chosen to have the same stellar mass. Based on morphological classifications from the RC3 and the Galaxy Zoo, the bluer colors of BAT AGN are mainly due to a higher fraction of mergers and …
