We study a parametric family of piecewise rotations of the torus, in the limit in which the rotation number approaches the rational value 1/4. There is a region of positive measure where the discontinuity set becomes dense in the limit; we prove that in this region the area occupied by stable periodic orbits remains positive. The main device is the construction of an induced map on a domain with vanishing measure; this map is the product of two involutions, and each involution preserves all its atoms. Dynamically, the composition of these involutions represents linking together two sector maps; this dynamical system features an orderly array of stable periodic orbits having a smooth parameter dependence, plus irregular contributions which become negligible in the limit.
This paper studies the behavior under iteration of the maps T_{ab}(x,y) = (F_{ab}(x)-y,x) of the plane R^2, in which F_{ab}(x)=ax if x>=0 and bx if x<0. The orbits under iteration correspond to solutions of the nonlinear difference equation x_{n+2}= 1/2(a-b)|x_{n+1}| + 1/2(a+b)x_{n+1} - x_n. This family of piecewise-linear maps has the parameter space (a,b)\in R^2. These maps are area-preserving homeomorphisms of R^2 that map rays from the origin into rays from the origin. The action on rays defines a map S_{ab} of the circle, which has a well-defined rotation number. This paper characterizes …
We consider piecewise linear discrete time macroeconomic models, which possess a continuum of equilibrium states. These systems are obtained by replacing rational inflation expectations with a boundedly rational, and genuinely sticky, response of agents to changes in the actual inflation rate in a standard Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium model. Both for a low-dimensional variant of the model, with one representative agent, and the multi-agent model, we show that, when exogenous noise is absent from the system, the continuum of equilibrium states is the global attractor. Further, when a …
We study maps of the unit interval whose graph is made up of two increasing segments and which are injective in an extended sense. Such maps $f_{\p}$ are parametrized by a quintuple $\p$ of real numbers satisfying inequations. Viewing $f_{\p}$ as a circle map, we show that it has a rotation number $ρ(f_{\p})$ and we compute $ρ(f_{\p})$ as a function of $\p$ in terms of Hecke-Mahler series. As a corollary, we prove that $ρ(f_{\p})$ is a rational number when the components of $\p$ are algebraic numbers.
Consider piecewise linear Lorenz maps on $[0, 1]$ of the following form \[ f_{a,b,c}(x)= {ll} ax+1-ac & x \in [0, c) b(x-c) & x \in (c, 1].\] We prove that $f_{a,b,c}$ admits an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure (acim) $μ$ with respect to the Lebesgue measure if and only if $f_{a,b,c}(0) \le f_{a,b,c}(1)$, i.e. $ac+(1-c)b \ge 1$. The acim is unique and ergodic unless $f_{a,b,c}$ is conjugate to a rational rotation. The equivalence between the acim and the Lebesgue measure is also fully investigated via the renormalization theory.
In this paper, we construct a digraph structure on $p$-adic dynamical systems defined by rational functions. We study the conditions under which the functions are measure-preserving, invertible and isometric, ergodic, and minimal on invariant subsets, by means of graph theoretic properties.
We prove some basic results for a dynamical system given by a piecewise linear and contractive map on the unit interval that takes two possible values at a point of discontinuity. We prove that there exists a universal limit cycle in the non-exceptional cases, and that the exceptional parameter set is very tiny in terms of gauge functions. The exceptional two-dimensional parameter is shown to have Hausdorff-dimension one. We also study the invariant sets and the limit sets; these are sometimes different and there are several cases to consider. In addition, we give a thorough investigation of t…
Let $f : [0,1)\rightarrow [0,1)$ be a $2$-interval piecewise affine increasing map which is injective but not surjective. Such a map $f$ has a rotation number and can be parametrized by three real numbers. We make fully explicit the dynamics of $f$ thanks to two specific functions $δ$ and $ϕ$ depending on these parameters whose definitions involve Hecke-Mahler series. As an application, we show that the rotation number of $f$ is rational, when the three parameters are algebraic numbers.
We study the mean-median map as a dynamical system on the space of finite sets of piecewise-affine continuous functions with rational coefficients. We determine the structure of the limit function in the neighbourhood of a distinctive family of rational points, the local minima. By constructing a simpler map which represents the dynamics in such neighbourhoods, we extend the results of Cellarosi and Munday (arXiv:1408.3454v1 [math.CO]) by two orders of magnitude. Based on these computations, we conjecture that the Hausdorff dimension of the graph of the limit function of the set $[0,x,1]$ is g…
\emph{Rotation numbers} for some maps of \emph{triods} was introduced in \cite{BMR}. The goal of this paper is to study \emph{patterns} of \emph{triods} which don't force other \emph{patterns} with the same \emph{rotation number} which we name \emph{triod twists}. We obtain their complete characterization and show that these \emph{patterns} can be conjugated to \emph{circle rotation} by a \emph{piecewise monotone} map. We also describe the dynamics of \emph{unimodal triod twist patterns} with a given rational \emph{rotation number}.
Let $X$ be a locally compact Hausdorff space with $n$ proper continuous self maps $τ_i:X \to X$ for $1 \le i \le n$. To this we associate two topological conjugacy algebras which emerge as the natural candidates for the universal algebra of the system, the tensor algebra $\A(X, τ)$ and the semicrossed product $\rC_0(X)\times_τ\Fn$. We introduce a concept of conjugacy for multidimensional systems, which we coin piecewise conjugacy. We prove that the piecewise conjugacy class of the system can be recovered from either the algebraic structure of $\A(X, τ)$ or $\rC_0(X)\times_τ\Fn$. Various classi…
Let T denote Thompson's group of piecewise 2-adic linear homeomorphisms of the circle. Ghys and Sergiescu showed that the rotation number of every element of T is rational, but their proof is very indirect. We give here a short, direct proof using train tracks, which generalizes to PL homeomorphism of the circle with rational break points and derivatives which are powers of some fixed integer, and also to certain flows on surfaces which we call "Thompson-like". We also obtain an explicit upper bound on the smallest period of a fixed point in terms of data which can be read off from the combina…
Let b be an integer and mu a probability measure on [0,1] which is invariant and ergodic multiplication by b mod 1, and 0<dim(mu)<1. Let f be a diffeomorphism between open subsets of the line. We show that if the measures mu and f(mu) are equivalent on f(E), then f'(x) is a rational power of b at mu-a.e. point x in E. In particular, if g is a piecewise-analytic map preserving mu then there is an open g-invariant set U supporting mu such that g is piecewise-linear on U and has slopes which are rational powers of a. In a similar vein, for mu as above, if c is another integer and b,c are not powe…
