We simplify the classification of supersymmetric solutions with compact holonomy of the Killing spinor equations of heterotic supergravity using the field equations and the additional assumption that the 3-form flux is closed. We determine all the fractions of supersymmetry that the solutions preserve and find that there is a restriction on the number of supersymmetries which depends on the isometry group of the background. We examine the geometry of spacetime in all cases. We find that the supersymmetric solutions of heterotic supergravity are associated with a large number of geometric structures which include 7-dimensional manifolds with $G_2$ structure,
6-dimensional complex and almost complex manifolds, and 4-dimensional hyper-Kähler, Kähler and anti-self-dual Weyl manifolds.
It is argued that $M$-theory compactified on {\it any} of Joyce's $Spin(7)$ holonomy 8-manifolds are dual to compactifications of heterotic string theory on Joyce 7-manifolds of $G_2$ holonomy.
We investigate hetrotic string theory on special holonomy manifolds including exceptional holonomy G_2 and Spin(7) manifolds. The gauge symmetry is F_4 in a G_2 manifold compactification, and so(9) in a Spin(7) manifold compactification. We also study the cascade of the holonomies: so(8) > Spin(7) > G_2 > su(3) > su(2). The differences of adjoining groups are described by Ising, tricritical Ising, 3-state Potts and u(1) models. These theories are essential for spacetime supersymmetries and gauge group enhancements. As concrete examples, we construct modular invariant partition functions and an…
In this letter we establish that the supersymmetric R^2 effective action for the heterotic string, obtained from the supersymmetrisation of the Lorentz Chern-Simons term, is to order $α'$ equivalent modulo field redefinitions to heterotic string effective actions computed by different methods.
The superspace geometry relevant to the heterotic string is reviewed from the point of view of the off-shell supermultiplet structure of $N=1,d=10$ supergravity. The anomaly-modified seven-form Bianchi identity is analysed at order $\a'^3$ and shown to admit a complete solution. The corresponding $\a'^3$ deformation of the dimension-zero torsion tensor is derived and shown to obey the appropriate cohomological constraint.
We study the duality between M-theory on compact holonomy G2-manifolds and the heterotic string on Calabi-Yau three-folds. The duality is studied for K3-fibered G2-manifolds, called twisted connected sums, which lend themselves to an application of fiber-wise M-theory/Heterotic Duality. For a large class of such G2-manifolds we are able to identify the dual heterotic as well as F-theory realizations. First we establish this chain of dualities for smooth G2-manifolds. This has a natural generalization to situations with non-abelian gauge groups, which correspond to singular G2-manifolds, where …
The dimensional reduction of heterotic supergravity with gauge fields truncated to the Cartan subalgebra exhibits a continuous O(d,d+16;R) global symmetry, related to the O(d,d+16;Z) T-duality of heterotic strings on a d-torus. The O(d,d+16;R) symmetry is not present, however, if the supergravity reduction is done including the full set of E_8 x E_8 or SO(32) gauge fields. We analyze which duality symmetries are realized to all orders in $α'$ in the proper effective field theories for the massless string states. We find a universal O(d,d;R) symmetry, also predicted by double field theory. We c…
We construct the heterotic dual theory in four dimensions of eleven dimensional supergravity compactified on a particular Joyce manifold, $J$. In particular, $J$ is constructed from resolving fixed point singularities of orbifolds of the seven torus in such a way that one is forced to consider a generalised orbifold on the heterotic side. We conjecture that a heterotic dual exists for all the compact 7-manifolds of $G_{2}$ holonomy constructed by Joyce.
In this paper, we continue the analysis of heterotic string compactifications on half-flat mirror manifolds by including the 10-dimensional gauge fields. It is argued, that the heterotic Bianchi identity is solved by a variant of the standard embedding. Then, the resulting gauge group in four dimensions is still E6 despite the fact that the Levi-Civita connection has SO(6) holonomy. We derive the associated four-dimensional effective theories including matter field terms for such compactifications. The results are also extended to more general manifolds with SU(3) structure.
We reconsider the issue of large-volume compactifications of the heterotic string in light of the recent discoveries about strongly-coupled string theories. Our conclusion remains firmly negative with respect to classical compactifications of the ten-dimensional field theory, albeit for a new reason: When the internal sixfold becomes large in heterotic units, the theory acquires an additional threshold at energies much less then the naive Kaluza-Klein scale. It is this additional threshold that imposes the ultimate limit on the compactification scale: Any compactification must have M_{Kaluza K…
A supersymmetric solution to type II supergravity is constructed by superposing two hyperkählers with torsion metrics. The solution is given by a Käler with torsion metric with $SU(3)$ holonomy. The metric is embedded into a heterotic solution obeying the Strominger system, together with a Yang-Mills instanton obtained by the standard embedding. T dualities lead to an $SO(6)$ instanton describing a symmetry breaking from $E_8$ to $SO(10)$. The compactification by taking a periodic array yields a supersymmetric domain wall solution of heterotic supergravity.
We present an ansatz which enables us to construct heterotic/M-theory dual pairs in four dimensions. It is checked that this ansatz reproduces previous results and that the massless spectra of the proposed dual pairs agree. The new dual pairs consist of M-theory compactifications on Joyce manifolds of $G_2$ holonomy and Calabi-Yau compactifications of heterotic strings. These results are further evidence that M-theory is consistent on orbifolds. Finally, we interpret these results in terms of M-theory geometries which are K3 fibrations and heterotic geometries which are conjectured to be $T^3$…
We consider flux compactifications of heterotic string theory in the presence of fermionic condensates on M_{1,2} times X_7 with both factors carrying a Killing spinor. In other words, M_{1,2} is either de Sitter, anti-de Sitter or Minkowski, and X_7 possesses a nearly parallel G_2-structure or has G_2-holonomy. We solve the complete set of field equations and the Bianchi identity to order alpha'. The latter is satisfied via a non-standard embedding by choosing the gauge field to be a G_2-instanton. It is shown that none of the solutions to the field equations is supersymmetric.
We investigate the compactification of D=11 supergravity to D=5,4,3, on compact manifolds of holonomy $SU(3)$ (Calabi-Yau), $G_2$, and $Spin(7)$, respectively, making use of examples of the latter two cases found recently by Joyce. In each case the lower dimensional theory is a Maxwell/Einstein supergravity theory. We find evidence for an equivalence, in certain cases, with heterotic string compactifications from D=10 to D=5,4,3, on compact manifolds of holonomy $SU(2)$ ($K_3\times S^1$), $SU(3)$, and $G_2$, respectively. Calabi-Yau manifolds with Hodge numbers $h_{1,1}=h_{1,2}=19$ play a sign…
We describe all supersymmetric solutions of the heterotic string which preserve 8 supersymmetries and show that are distinguished by the holonomy, ${\rm hol}(\hat\nabla)$, of the connection, $\hat\nabla$, with skew-symmetric torsion. The ${\rm hol}(\hat\nabla) \subseteq SU(2)$ solutions are principal bundles over a 4-dimensional hyper-Kähler manifold equipped with a anti-self-dual connection and fibre group $G$ which has Lie algebra, ${\mathfrak Lie} (G)=\bR^{5,1}$, $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\bR)\oplus \mathfrak{su}(2)$ or $\mathfrak{cw}_6$. Some of the solutions have the interpretation as 5-branes wra…
We show that the supersymmetric near horizon geometry of heterotic black holes is either an AdS_3 fibration over a 7-dimensional manifold which admits a G_2 structure compatible with a connection with skew-symmetric torsion, or it is a product R^{1,1} * S^8, where S^8 is a holonomy Spin(7) manifold, preserving 2 and 1 supersymmetries respectively. Moreover, we demonstrate that the AdS_3 class of heterotic horizons can preserve 4, 6 and 8 supersymmetries provided that the geometry of the base space is further restricted. Similarly R^{1,1} * S^8 horizons with extended supersymmetry are products …
We solve the Killing-Yano equation on manifolds with a $G$-structure for $G=SO(n), U(n), SU(n), Sp(n)\cdot Sp(1), Sp(n), G_2$ and $Spin(7)$. Solutions include nearly-Kähler, weak holonomy $G_2$, balanced SU(n) and holonomy $G$ manifolds. As an application, we find that particle probes on $AdS_4\times X$ compactifications of type IIA and 11-dimensional supergravity admit a ${\cal W}$-type of symmetry generated by the fundamental forms. We also explore the ${\cal W}$-symmetries of string and particle actions in heterotic and common sector supersymmetric backgrounds. In the heterotic case, the ge…
The condition of having an $N=1$ spacetime supersymmetry for heterotic string leads to 4 distinct possibilities for compactifications namely compactifications down to 6,4,3 and 2 dimensions. Compactifications to 6 and 4 dimensions have been studied extensively before (corresponding to $K3$ and a Calabi-Yau threefold respectively). Here we complete the study of the other two cases corresponding to compactification down to 3 on a 7 dimensional manifold of $G_2$ holonomy and compactification down to 2 on an 8 dimensional manifold of $Spin(7)$ holonomy. We study the extended chiral algebra and fin…
We study heterotic backgrounds with non-trivial $H$-flux and non-vanishing expectation values of fermionic bilinears, often referred to as gaugino condensates. The gaugini appear in the low energy action via the gauge-invariant three-form bilinear $Σ_{MNP}={\rm tr}\:\barχΓ_{MNP}χ$. For Calabi-Yau compactifications to four dimensions, the gaugino condensate corresponds to an internal three-form $Σ_{mnp}$ that must be a singlet of the holonomy group. This condition does not hold anymore when an internal $H$-flux is turned on and ${\cal O}(α')$ effects are included. In this paper we study flux co…
Necessary and sufficient conditions to the existence of a hermitian connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion and holonomy contained in SU(3) are given. Non-compact solution to the supergravity-type I equations of motion with non-zero flux and non-constant dilaton is found in dimensions 6. Non-conformally flat non-compact solutions to the supergravity-type I equations of motion with non-zero flux and non-constant dilaton are found in dimensions 7 and 8. A Riemannian metric with holonomy contained in $G_2$ arises from our considerations and Hitchin's flow equations, which seems to be new. …
Following the work of Lima et al on the exact evaluation of the nonperturbative contribution to the superpotential from open-membrane instanton in Heterotic M-Theory, we evaluate systematically the contribution to the superpotential of a membrane instanton obtained by wrapping of a single M2 brane, once, on an isolated supersymmetric 3-cycle in a G_2-holonomy manifold. We then try to relate the results obtained to those sketched out in Harvey and Moore. We also do a heat-kernel asymptotics analysis to see whether one gets similar UV-divergent terms for (one or both of) the bosonic and fermioni…
CHL compactifications are supersymmetry preserving orbifolds of any perturbatively renormalizable and ultraviolet finite ground state of the perturbative string theories: heterotic, type I, or type II, preserving 32, 16, 12, 8, 4, (or zero) supersymmetries, and retaining the perturbative renormalizability and finiteness of the parent string vacuum. In this paper, we review the genesis of the CHL (Chaudhuri-Hockney-Lykken) project within the broader context of the full String/M Duality web, establishing the existence of moduli spaces with a small number of massless scalar fields, the decompacti…
We describe the infinitesimal moduli space of pairs $(Y, V)$ where $Y$ is a manifold with $G_2$ holonomy, and $V$ is a vector bundle on $Y$ with an instanton connection. These structures arise in connection to the moduli space of heterotic string compactifications on compact and non-compact seven dimensional spaces, e.g. domain walls. Employing the canonical $G_2$ cohomology developed by Reyes-Carrión and Fernández and Ugarte, we show that the moduli space decomposes into the sum of the bundle moduli $H^1_{\check{d}_A}(Y,\mathrm{End}(V))$ plus the moduli of the $G_2$ structure preserving the i…
M-theory on compact eight-manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy is a framework for geometric engineering of 3d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories coupled to gravity. We propose a new construction of such $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds, based on a generalized connected sum, where the building blocks are a Calabi-Yau four-fold and a $G_2$-holonomy manifold times a circle, respectively, which both asymptote to a Calabi-Yau three-fold times a cylinder. The generalized connected sum construction is first exemplified for Joyce orbifolds, and is then used to construct examples of new compact manifolds…
Supersymmetric monopoles of the heterotic string theory associated with arbitrary non-negative number of the left moving modes of the string states are presented. They include H monopoles and their T dual partners F monopoles (ALE instantons). Massive F = H monopoles are T self-dual. Solutions include also an infinite tower of generic T duality covariant non-singular in stringy frame F\&H monopoles with the bottomless throat geometry. The massless F = -H monopoles are invariant under combined T duality and charge conjugation converting a monopole into anti monopole. All F\&H monopoles can be p…
A Theorem of Kirichenko states that the torsion 3-form of the characteristic connection of a nearly Kähler manifold is parallel. On the other side, any almost hermitian manifold of type $\mathrm{G}_1$ admits a unique connection with totally skew symmetric torsion. In dimension six, we generalize Kirichenko's Theorem and we describe almost hermitian $\mathrm{G}_1$-manifolds with parallel torsion form. In particular, among them there are only two types of $\mathcal{W}_3$-manifolds with a non-abelian holonomy group, namely twistor spaces of 4-dimensional self-dual Einstein manifolds and the invar…
Worldsheet string theory compactified on exceptional holomony manifolds is revisited following arXiv:1809.06376, where aspects of the chiral symmetry were described for the case where the compact space is a 7-dimensional G$_2$-holonomy manifold constructed as a Twisted Connected Sum. We reinterpret this result and extend it to Extra Twisted Connected Sum G$_2$-manifolds, and to 8-dimensional Generalized Connected Sum Spin(7)-manifolds. Automorphisms of the latter construction lead us to conjecture new mirror maps.
We determine the geometry of supersymmetric heterotic string backgrounds for which all parallel spinors with respect to the connection $\hat\nabla$ with torsion $H$, the NS$\otimes$NS three-form field strength, are Killing. We find that there are two classes of such backgrounds, the null and the timelike. The Killing spinors of the null backgrounds have stability subgroups $K\ltimes\bR^8$ in $Spin(9,1)$, for $K=Spin(7)$, SU(4), $Sp(2)$, $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ and $\{1\}$, and the Killing spinors of the timelike backgrounds have stability subgroups $G_2$, SU(3), SU(2) and $\{1\}$. The former admit…
We reconsider a class of heterotic string theories studied in 1989, based on tensor products of N=2 minimal models with asymmetric simple current invariants. We extend this analysis from (2,2) and (1,2) spectra to (0,2) spectra with SO(10) broken to the Standard Model. In the latter case the spectrum must contain fractionally charged particles. We find that in nearly all cases at least some of them are massless. However, we identify a large subclass where the fractional charges are at worst half-integer, and often vector-like. The number of families is very often reduced in comparison to the 1…
The requirement of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetry for M-theory backgrounds of the form of a warped product ${\cal M}\times_{w}X$, where $X$ is an eight-manifold and ${\cal M}$ is three-dimensional Minkowski or AdS space, implies the existence of a nowhere-vanishing Majorana spinor $ξ$ on $X$. $ξ$ lifts to a nowhere-vanishing spinor on the auxiliary nine-manifold $Y:=X\times S^1$, where $S^1$ is a circle of constant radius, implying the reduction of the structure group of $Y$ to $Spin(7)$. In general, however, there is no reduction of the structure group of $X$ itself. This situation can be describ…
