A chiral-order parameter of spins in a crystal can not be inferred from measurements of Bragg reflections, although there are several claims in published literature to the contrary. Appropriate techniques use total scattering, of x-rays or neutrons, that yield the instantaneous value of a spin correlation related to an established measure of spin chirality.
In chiral ferromagnets, weak spin-orbit interactions twist the ferromagnetic order into spirals, leading to helical order. We investigate an extended Ginzburg-Landau theory of such systems where the helical order is destabilized in favor of crystalline phases. These crystalline phases are based on periodic arrangements of double-twist cylinders and are strongly reminiscent of blue phases in liquid crystals. We discuss the relevance of such blue phases for the phase diagram of the chiral ferromagnet MnSi.
We show that the bulk transport magnetic current is generated by the moving magnetic kink crystal (chiral soliton lattice) formed in the chiral helimagnet under the static magnetic field applied perpendicular to the helical axis. The current is caused by the non-equilibrium transport momentum with the kink mass being determined by the spin fluctuations around the kink crystal state. An emergence of the transport magnetic currents is then a consequence of the dynamical off-diagonal long range order along the helical axis. We derive an explicit formula for the inertial mass of the kink crystal a…
A thorough tensor analysis of the Bragg-forbidden reflection (00.3)$_h$ in corundum systems having a global center of inversion, like V$_2$O$_3$ and $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$, shows that anomalous x-ray resonant diffraction can access chiral properties related to the dipole-quadrupole (E1-E2) channel via an interference with the pure quadrupole-quadrupole (E2-E2) process. This is also confirmed by independent {\it ab initio} numerical simulations. In such a way it becomes possible, in this particular case, to estimate the intensity of the ``twisted'' trigonal crystal field ($C_3$ symmetry) and, in gener…
Structural and magnetic chiralities are found to coexist in a small group of materials in which they produce intriguing phenomenologies such as the recently discovered skyrmion phases. Here, we describe a previously unknown manifestation of this interplay in MnSb2O6, a trigonal oxide with a chiral crystal structure. Unlike all other known cases, the MnSb2O6 magnetic structure is based on co-rotating cycloids rather than helices. The coupling to the structural chirality is provided by a magnetic axial vector, related to the so-called vector chirality. We show that this unique arrangement is the…
We experimentally study magnetic resonances in the helical and conical magnetic phases of the chiral magnetic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ at the temperature $T$=5 K. Using a broadband microwave spectroscopy technique based on vector network analysis, we identify three distinct sets of helimagnon resonances in the frequency range 2 GHz $\leq f \leq$ 20 GHz. The extracted resonance frequencies are in accordance with calculations of the helimagnon bandstructure found in an intrinsic chiral magnonic crystal. The periodic modulation of the equilibrium spin direction that leads to the formation of the …
General properties of the chiral scattering of polarized neutrons are considered for two possible axial vector interactions: Zeeman energy and non-alternating Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Behavior in magnetic field of helical magnetic structures is discussed for $Mn Si$ and magneto-electric materials. The dynamical chiral fluctuations in magnetic field are considered briefly. The chiral fluctuations in materials with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are discussed and an assumption is made that above the transition temperature they have to be incommensurate.
We review the concept of chirality, at first briefly in a general context then in the specific framework of the spin networks. We next discuss to what extent neutron scattering appears as an unconvertible tool to probe magnetic chirality in the static and dynamical regimes of the spins. The remarkable chiral ground state and excitations of the Fe-langasite compound finally serves to illustrate the use of neutron polarimetry in the experimental studies of the magnetic chirality.
Under pressure, the itinerant helimagnet MnSi displays unusual magnetic properties. We have previously discussed a BCC helical spin crystal as a promising starting point for describing the high pressure phenomenology. This state has topologically nontrivial configurations of the magnetization field. Here we note the consequences for magneto-transport that arise generally from such spin textures. In particular a skyrmion density induced `topological' Hall effect, with unusual field dependence, is described.
We theoretically discover that unique eigenmodes of skyrmion crystal (SkX) are not only magnetically active to ac magnetic field (H^w) but also electrically active to ac electric field (E^w) in a multiferroic chiral-lattice magnet Cu2OSeO3, which amplifies the dynamical magnetoelectric coupling between E^w and the spin texture. The resulting intense interference between their electric and magnetic activation processes can lead to unprecedentedly large diode effect on the microwave, i.e., its absorption by SkX changes up to ~20% when the incident direction is reversed. Our results demonstrate t…
In the theory of quantum spin liquids, gauge fluctuations are emergent excitations at low energy. The gauge magnetic field is proportional to the scalar spin chirality, S1.(S2xS3). It is therefore highly desirable to measure the fluctuation spectrum of the scalar spin chirality. We show that in the Kagome lattice with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya term, the fluctuation in Sz which is readily measured by neutron scattering contains a piece which is proportional to the chirality fluctuation.
Motivated by cold atom experiments on Chern insulators, we study the honeycomb lattice Haldane-Hubbard Mott insulator of spin-$1/2$ fermions using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods. We show that this model exhibits various chiral magnetic orders including a wide regime of triple-Q tetrahedral order. Incorporating third-neighbor hopping frustrates and ultimately melts this tetrahedral spin crystal. From analyzing low energy spectra, many-body Chern numbers, entanglement spectra, and modular matrices, we identify the molten state as a chiral spin liquid (CSL)…
We consider the existence of bulk chiral fermions around points of symmetry in the Brillouin zone of nonmagnetic 3D crystals with negligible spin-orbit interactions. We use group theory to show that this is possible, but only for a reduced number of space groups and points of symmetry that we tabulate. Moreover, we show that for a handful of space groups the existence of bulk chiral fermions is not only possible but unavoidable, irrespective of the concrete crystal structure. Thus our tables can be used to look for bulk chiral fermions in a specific class of systems, namely that of nonmagnetic…
Herein, we report the discovery of a novel Gd-based magnetic compound GdPt$_2$B with a chiral crystal structure. X-ray diffraction and chemical composition analyses reveal a CePt$_2$B-type crystal structure (space group: $P6_422$) for GdPt$_2$B. Moreover, we successfully grew single crystals of GdPt$_2$B using the Czochralski method. Magnetization measurements and the Curie$-$Weiss analysis demonstrate that the ferromagnetic interaction is dominant in GdPt$_2$B. A clear transition is observed in the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat at…
Symmetry-protected non-trivial states in chiral topological materials hold immense potential for fundamental science and technological advances. Here, we report electrical transport, quantum oscillations, and electronic structure results of a single crystal of chiral quantum material $\rm PtAl$. Based on the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations, we show that the smallest Fermi pocket ($α$) possesses a non-trivial Berry phase $1.16$$π$. The band associated with this Fermi pocket carries a linear energy dispersion over a substantial energy window of $\sim$700 meV that is further consistent wit…
