We derive a general and simple expression for the time-dependence of the position operator of a multi-band Hamiltonian with arbitrary matrix elements depending only on the momentum of the quasi-particle. Our result shows that in such systems the Zitterbewegung like term related to a trembling motion of the quasi-particle, always appears in the position operator. Moreover, the Zitterbewegung is, in general, a multi-frequency oscillatory motion of the quasi-particle. We derive a few different expressions for the amplitude of the oscillatory motion including that related to the Berry connection matrix. We present several examples to demonstrate how general and versatile our result is.

Study Zitterbewegung effect in a Quasi One-dimensional Relativistic Quantum Plasma by DHW formalization

Unified description of the Zitterbewegung for spintronic, graphene and superconducting systems

We present a unified treatment of Zitterbewegung phenomena for a wide class of systems including spintronic, graphene, and superconducting systems. We derive an explicit expression for the time-dependence of the position operator of the quasiparticles which can be decomposed into a mean part and an oscillatory term. The latter corresponds to the Zitterbewegung. To apply our result for different systems one needs to use only vector algebra instead of the more complicated operator algebra.

Spin orbit interaction and zitterbewegung in symmetric wells

Recently, we have introduced a novel inter-subband-induced spin-orbit (s-o) coupling [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 076603 (2007); cond-mat/0607218] arising in \textit{symmetric} wells with at least two subbands. This new s-o coupling gives rise to an usual zitterbewegung -- i.e. the semiconductor analog to the relativistic trembling motion of electrons -- with cycloidal motion without magnetic fields. Here we complement these findings by explicitly deriving expressions for the corresponding zitterbewegung in spin space.

Zitterbewegung of electrons in quantum wells and dots in presence of an in-plane magnetic field

We study the effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the zitterbewegung (ZB) of electrons in a semiconductor quantum well (QW) and in a quantum dot (QD) with the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. We obtain a general expression of the time-evolution of the position vector and current of the electron in a semiconductor quantum well. Quasinormal mode approach to modelling light-emission and propagation in nanoplasmonics

We describe a powerful and intuitive technique for modeling light-matter interactions in classical and quantum nanoplasmonics. Magnetoconductance of parabolically confined quasi-one dimensional channels

Electrical conduction is studied along parabolically confined quasi-one dimensional channels, in the framework of a revised linear-response theory, for elastic scattering.
