Photoemission experiments have shown that Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is a topological insulator. By controlled doping, we have obtained crystals of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ with non-metallic conduction. At low temperatures, we uncover a novel type of magnetofingerprint signal which involves the spin degrees of freedom. Given the mm-sized crystals, the observed amplitude is 200-500$\times$ larger than expected from universal conductance fluctuations. The results point to very long phase breaking lengths in an unusual conductance channel in these non-metallic samples. We discuss the nature of the in-gap conducting states and their relation to the topological surface states.
Two independently prepared condensates can be combined into a single larger condensate by detection of their relative phase in an intereference measurement.
Starting from the Hamiltonian operator of the noncompensated two-sublattice model of a small antiferromagnetic particle, we derive the effective Lagrangian of a biaxial antiferromagnetic particle in an external magnetic field with the help of spin-coherent-state path integrals. Two unequal level-shifts induced by tunneling through two types of barriers are obtained using the instanton method. The energy spectrum is found from Bloch theory regarding the periodic potential as a superlattice. The external magnetic field indeed removes Kramers' degeneracy, however a new quenching of the energy spl…
We study the influence of a DC bias voltage V on quantum interference corrections to the measured differential conductance in metallic mesoscopic wires and rings. The amplitude of both universal conductance fluctuations (UCF) and Aharonov-Bohm effect (ABE) is enhanced several times for voltages larger than the Thouless energy. The enhancement persists even in the presence of inelastic electron-electron scattering up to V ~ 1 mV. For larger voltages electron-phonon collisions lead to the amplitude decaying as a power law for the UCF and exponentially for the ABE. We obtain good agreement of the…
In this paper we study the Macroscopic Quantum Oscillation (MQO) effect in ferromagnetic single domain magnets with a magnetic field applied along the hard anistropy axis. The level splitting for the ground state, derived with the conventional instanton method, oscillates with the external field and is quenched at some field values. A formula for quantum tunneling at excited levels is also obtained. The existence of topological phase accounts for this kind of oscillation and the corresponding thermodynamical quantities exhibit similar interference effects which resembles to some extent the ele…
We derive an effective medium model to characterize the macroscopic electromagnetic response of metallic nanowire arrays embedded in a host dielectric with a Kerr-type nonlinear permittivity function. It is shown that the macroscopic electromagnetic fields are coupled to the conduction current in the nanowires and to an additional quasi-static potential through a system of nonlinear equations. We prove that a weak nonlinearity leads to an electromagnetic response closer to that of an indefinite medium, and to isofrequency contours with increased hyperbolicity. For high-field intensities the ne…
We analyze the quantum interference effects appearing in the charge current through the double quantum dots coupled in T-shape configuration to an isotropic superconductor and metallic lead. Owing to proximity effect the quantum dots inherit a pairing which has the profound influence on nonequilibrium charge transport, especially in the subgap regime |eV| < Delta. We discuss under what conditions the Fano-type lineshapes might appear in such Andreev conductance and consider a possible interplay with the strong correlation effects.
Quantum corrections to charge transport can give rise to an oscillatory magnetoconductance, typically observed in mesoscopic samples with a length shorter than or comparable with the phase coherence length. Here, we report the observation of magnetoconductance oscillations periodic in magnetic field with an amplitude of the order of $e^2/h$ in macroscopic samples of Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite (HOPG). The observed effect emerges when all carriers are confined to their lowest Landau levels. We argue that this quantum interference phenomenon can be explained by invoking moiré superlattice…
New macroscopic quantum interference effects in the behavior of the antiferromagnetic nanoclusters under action of a swept magnetic field are predicted and theoretically investigated, namely : oscillations of the magnetic susceptibility of nanocluster similar to the electron Bloch oscillations in crystal and the corresponding Stark ladder-like resonances in ac-magnetic field. These effects are related to that of the macroscopic quantum coherence phenomena. The analogy of the antiferromagnetic nanoclusters quantum behavior and Josephson junction with a small capacity was revealed as well.
We report on low temperature conductance measurements of gold nanogaps fabricated by controlled electromigration. Fluctuations of the conductance due to quantum interferences and depending both on bias voltage and magnetic field are observed. By analyzing the voltage and magnetoconductance correlation functions we determine the type of electron trajectories generating the observed quantum interferences and the effective characteristic time of phase coherence in our device.
In a recent paper Liang {\it et al.} [Nature {\bf 411}, 665 (2001)] showed experimentally, that metallic nanotubes, strongly coupled to external electrodes, may act as coherent molecular waveguides for electronic transport. The experimental results were supported by theoretical analysis based on the scattering matrix approach. In this paper we analyze theoretically this problem using a real-space approach, which makes it possible to control quality of interface contacts. Electronic structure of the nanotube is taken into account within the tight-binding model. External electrodes and the centr…
Organo-metallic molecular structures where a single metallic atom is embedded in the organic backbone are ideal systems to study the effect of strong correlations on their electronic structure. In this work we calculate the electronic and transport properties of a series of metalloporphyrin molecules sandwiched by gold electrodes using a combination of density functional theory and scattering theory. The impact of strong correlations at the central metallic atom is gauged by comparing our results obtained using conventional DFT and DFT+U approaches. The zero bias transport properties may or ma…
We show that interference can be the principle of operation of an all-optical switch and other nanoscale plasmonic interference devices (PIDs). The optical response of two types of planar plasmonic waveguides is studied theoretically: bent chains and Y-shaped configurations of closely-spaced metallic nanospheres. We study symmetric Y-shape arrays as an example of an all-optical switch and demonstrate that effective phase- and amplitude-sensitive control of the output signal can be achieved due to interference effects.
The temperature and density dependence of the phase coherence time $τ_ϕ$ in high-mobility silicon inversion layers was determined from the magnetoresistivity due to weak localization. The upper temperature limit for single-electron quantum interference effects was delineated by comparing $τ_ϕ$ with the momentum relaxation time $τ$. A comparison between the density dependence of the borders for quantum interference effects and the strong resistivity drop reveals that theses effects are not related to each other. As the strong resistivity drop occurs in the Drude regime, the apparent metallic be…
Shockley surface states (SS) have attracted much attention due to their role in various physical phenomena occurring at surfaces. It is also clear from experiments that they can play an important role in electron transport. However, accurate incorporation of surface states in $\textit{ab initio}$ quantum transport simulations remains still an unresolved problem. Here we go beyond the state-of-the-art non-equilibrium Green's function formalism through the evaluation of the self-energy in real-space, enabling electron transport without using artificial periodic in-plane conditions. We demonstrat…
We show how nanostructuring of a metallic gate on a field-effect transistor (FET) can lead to a macroscopic, robust and voltage controlled quantum state in the electron channel of a FET. A chain of triple quantum dot molecules created by gate structure realizes a spin-half Heisenberg chain with spin-spin interactions alternating between ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic. The quantum state is a semiconductor implementation of an integer spin-one antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain with a unique correlated ground state and a finite energy gap, originally conjectured by Haldane.
For similar disorder, the backscattering contribution to the conductivity, irrelevant for metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes, is proved to become more significant for doped semiconducting systems, as found in experiments. In the case of multi-walled nanotubes, the intershell coupling is further shown to enhance the contribution of backscattering for "metallic" double-walled, whereas it remains insignificant for "metallic/semiconducting" double-walled systems. This supports that MWNTs are long ballistic conductors close to the charge neutrality point.
The quantum coherence of electronic quasiparticles underpins many of the emerging transport properties of conductors at small scales. Novel electronic implementations of quantum optics devices are now available with perspectives such as 'flying' qubit manipulations. However, electronic quantum interferences in conductors remained up to now limited to propagation paths shorter than $30\,μ$m, independently of the material. Here we demonstrate strong electronic quantum interferences after a propagation along two $0.1\,$mm long pathways in a circuit. Interferences of visibility as high as $80\%$ a…
We report on magnetoconductance measurements of metallic networks of various sizes ranging from 10 to $10^{6}$ plaquettes, with anisotropic aspect ratio. Both Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak (AAS) $h/2e$ periodic oscillations and Aharonov-Bohm (AB) $h/e$ periodic oscillations are observed for all networks. For large samples, the amplitude of both oscillations results from the incoherent superposition of contributions of phase coherent regions. When the transverse size becomes smaller than the phase coherent length $L_ϕ$, one enters a new regime which is phase coherent (mesoscopic) along one direction …
The influence of the interference of electron waves, which were scattered by single impurities, on nonlinear quantum conductance of metallic microconstrictions (as was recently investigated experimentally) is studied theoretically. The dependence of the interference pattern in the conductance $G(V)$ on the contact diameter and the spatial distribution of impurities is analyzed. It is shown that the amplitude of conductance oscillation is strongly depended on the position of impurities inside the constriction.
We study the properties of thermal radiation emitted by a thin dielectric slab, employing the framework of macroscopic fluctuational electrodynamics. Particular emphasis is given to the analytical construction of the required dyadic Green's functions. Based on these, general expressions are derived for both the system's Poynting vector, describing the intensity of propagating radiation, and its energy density, containing contributions from non-propagating modes which dominate the near-field regime. An extensive discussion is then given for thin metal films. It is shown that the radiative inten…
For a two-sublattice antiferromagnet the Lagrangian is constructed taking into account Berry phase whose form is matched to the quantum-mechanical Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Tunnel effects are analyzed taking into account the crystallographic symmetry and possible types of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. It is shown that, when the real magnetic symmetry and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are taken into consideration, the effects of a destructive instanton interference and the suppression of macroscopic quantum tunneling can play an essential role. It also may lead to a periodic depe…
Macroscopic quantum coherence and spin-phase interference are studied between excited levels in single-domain ferromagnetic particles in a magnetic field along the hard anisotropy axis. The system has the general structure of magnetocrystalline anisotropy, such as biaxial, trigonal, tetragonal, and hexagonal symmetry. This study not only just yields the previous spin-phase interference results for the ground state tunneling, but also provide a generalization of the Kramers degeneracy to coherently spin tunneling at low-lying excited states. These analytical results are found to be in good agre…
We present an experimentally implementable method to couple Josephson charge qubits and to generate and detect macroscopic entangled states. A large-junction superconducting quantum interference device is used in the qubit circuit for both coupling qubits and implementing the readout. Also, we explicitly show how to achieve a microwave-assisted macroscopic entanglement in the coupled-qubit system.
The conductance of breaking metallic nanojunctions shows plateaus alternated with sudden jumps, corresponding to the stretching of stable atomic configurations and atomic rearrangements, respectively. We investigate the structure of the conductance plateaus both by measuring the voltage dependence of the plateaus' slope on individual junctions and by a detailed statistical analysis on a large amount of contacts. Though the atomic discreteness of the junction plays a fundamental role in the evolution of the conductance, we find that the fine structure of the conductance plateaus is determined b…
We irradiated an rf-SQUID qubit with large-amplitude and high frequency electromagnetic field. Population transitions between macroscopic distinctive quantum states due to Landau-Zener transitions at energy-level avoided crossings were observed. The qubit population on the excited states as a function of flux detuning and microwave power exhibits interference patterns. Some novel features are found in the interference and a model based on rate equations can well address the features.
Contributions of quantum interference effects occuring in quasicrystals are emphasized. First conversely to metallic systems, quasiperiodic ones are shown to enclose original alterations of their conductive properties while downgrading long range order. Besides, origins of localization mechanisms are outlined within the context of the original metal-insulator transition (MIT) found in these materials.
Matter-wave interferometry with solids is highly susceptible to minute fluctuations of environmental fields, including gravitational effects from distant sources. Hence, experiments require a degree of shielding that is extraordinarily challenging to achieve in realistic terrestrial or even space-based set-ups. Here, we design protocols that exploit the spatial correlations that are inherent in perturbations due to distant sources to reduce significantly their impact on the visibility of interference patterns. We show that interference patterns that are robust to such type of noise can be enco…
Nanostructured materials have recently emerged as a promising approach for material appearance design. Research has mainly focused on creating structural colours by wave interference, leaving aside other important aspects that constitute the visual appearance of an object, such as the respective weight of specular and diffuse reflectances, object macroscopic shape, illumination and viewing conditions. Here, we report the potential of disordered optical metasurfaces for harnessing visual appearance. We develop a multiscale modelling platform for the predictive rendering of macroscopic objects c…
Exploring the quantum behaviour of macroscopic objects provides an intriguing avenue to study the foundations of physics and to develop a suite of quantum-enhanced technologies. One prominent path of study is provided by quantum optomechanics which utilizes the tools of quantum optics to control the motion of macroscopic mechanical resonators. Despite excellent recent progress, the preparation of mechanical quantum superposition states remains outstanding due to weak coupling and thermal decoherence. Here we present a novel optomechanical scheme that significantly relaxes these requirements al…
We demonstrate quantum interference between indistinguishable photons emitted by two nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in distinct diamond samples separated by two meters. Macroscopic solid immersion lenses are used to enhance photon collection efficiency. Quantum interference is verified by measuring a value of the second-order cross-correlation function $g^{(2)}(0) = 0.35 \pm 0.04<0.5$. In addition, optical transition frequencies of two separated NV centers are tuned into resonance with each other by applying external electric fields. Extension of the present approach to generate entanglement of…
Surface plasmon polaritons (plasmons) are a combination of light and a collective oscillation of the free electron plasma at metal-dielectric interfaces. This interaction allows sub-wavelength confinement of light, beyond the diffraction limit inherent to dielectric structures. The resulting electromagnetic fields are more intense and the strength of optical interactions between metallic structures and light-sources or detectors can be increased. Plasmons maintain non-classical photon statistics and preserve entanglement on plasmon-assisted transmission through thin, patterned metallic films o…
A quantum emitter coupled to a nano-mechanical oscillator is a hybrid system where a macroscopic degree of freedom is coupled to a purely quantum system. Recent progress in nanotechnology has led to the realization of such devices by embedding single artificial atoms like quantum dots or superconducting qubits into vibrating wires or membranes, opening up new perspectives for quantum information technologies and for the exploration of the quantum-classical boundary. In this letter, we show that the quantum emitter can be turned into a strikingly efficient light-controlled source of mechanical …
We theoretically investigate the macroscopic quantum dynamics of a pi junction with a superconductor (S) and a multiferroic material or a ferromagnetic insulator (FI). By deriving the effective action from a microscopic Hamiltonian, a pi-junction qubit (a S-FI-S superconducting quantum interference device ring) is proposed. In this qubit, a quantum two-level system is spontaneously generated and the effect of the quasiparticle dissipation is found to be very weak. These features make it possible to realize a quiet qubit with high coherency. We also investigate macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQ…
We propose a definitive test of whether plates involved in Casimir experiments should be modeled with ballistic or diffusive electrons--a prominent controversy highlighted by a number of conflicting experiments. The unambiguous test we propose is a measurement of the Casimir force between a disordered quasi-2D metallic plate and a three-dimensional metallic system at low temperatures, in which disorder-induced weak localization effects modify the well-known Drude result in an experimentally tunable way. We calculate the weak localization correction to the Casimir force as a function of magneti…
We propose a scheme to experimentally observe matter-wave interference in the time domain, specifically in the arrival-time or the time-of-flight (TOF) distribution for atomic BEC Schrodinger-cat state represented by superposition of macroscopically separated wave packets in space. This is in contrast to interference in space at a fixed time observed in reported BEC experiments. We predict and quantify the quantum interference in the TOF distribution calculated from the modulus of the quantum probability current density (rather than the TOF distributions obtained from a purely classical or sem…
When a macroscopic metallic wire is subject to tensile stress, it necks down smoothly as it elongates. We show that nanowires with radii comparable to the Fermi wavelength display remarkably different behavior. Using concepts from fluid dynamics, a PDE for nanowire shape evolution is derived from a semiclassical energy functional that includes electron-shell effects. A rich dynamics involving movement and interaction of kinks connecting locally stable radii is found, and a new class of universal equilibrium shapes is predicted.
The interface between a solid and vacuum can become electronically distinct from the bulk. This feature, encountered in the case of quantum Hall effect, has a manifestation in insulators with topologically protected metallic surface states. Non-trivial Berry curvature of the Bloch waves or periodically driven perturbation are known to generate it. Here, by studying the angle-dependent magnetoresistance in prismatic bismuth crystals of different shapes, we detect a robust surface contribution to electric conductivity when the magnetic field is aligned parallel to a two-dimensional boundary betw…
We report the nanoscale imaging of Ti-doped bilayer calcium ruthenates during the Mott metal-insulator transition by microwave impedance microscopy. Different from a typical first-order phase transition where coexistence of the two terminal phases takes place, a new metallic stripe phase oriented along the in-plane crystalline axes emerges inside both the G-type antiferromagnetic insulating state and paramagnetic metallic state. The effect of this electronic state can be observed in macroscopic measurements, allowing us to construct a phase diagram that takes into account the energetically com…
Single metallic nanorods acting as half-wave antennas in the optical range exhibit an asymmetric, multi-resonant scattering spectrum that strongly depends on both their length and dielectric properties. Here we show that such spectral features can be easily understood in terms of Fano-like interference between adjacent plasmon resonances. On the basis of analytical and numerical results for different geometries, we demonstrate that Fano resonances may appear for such single-particle nanoantennas provided that interacting resonances overlap in both spatial and frequency domains.
