We study thermodynamics properties of a one dimensional gas of hard elongated particles. The particle centers are restricted to a line, while they can rotate in two-dimensional space. Correlations between orientations of the objects are studied (by transfer matrix method) as a function of density and aspect ratio. The behavior in the extreme high-density (jamming) limit is described by a few universality classes depending on the object's shape. In particular, there is a diverging correlation length when the contact point of adjacent objects is far from the line along which their centers move, as for needles and rectangles.
On the universality of jamming percolation: reply to the comment of Jeng and Schwarz
In Phys. Rev. Lett.
The jamming transition of non-spherical particles is fundamentally different from the spherical case. Non-spherical particles are hypostatic at their jamming points, while isostaticity is ensured in the case of the jamming of spherical particles. This structural difference implies that the presence of asphericity affects the critical exponents related to the contact number and the vibrational density of states. Moreover, while the force and gap distributions of isostatic jamming present power-law behaviors, even an infinitesimal asphericity is enough to smooth out these singularities. In a rec…
Amorphous packings of non-spherical particles such as ellipsoids and spherocylinders are known to be hypostatic: the number of mechanical contacts between particles is smaller than the number of degrees of freedom, thus violating Maxwell's mechanical stability criterion. In this work, we propose a general theory of hypostatic amorphous packings and the associated jamming transition. First, we show that many systems fall into a same universality class. As an example, we explicitly map ellipsoids into a system of `breathing' particles. We show by using a marginal stability argument that in both …
Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling analysis have been performed to study the jamming and percolation behavior of linear $k$-mers (also known as rods or needles) on the two-dimensional triangular lattice, considering an isotropic RSA process on a lattice of linear dimension $L$ and periodic boundary conditions. Extensive numerical work has been done to extend previous studies to larger system sizes and longer $k$-mers, which enables the confirmation of a nonmonotonic size dependence of the percolation threshold and the estimation of a maximum value of $k$ from which percolation wou…
We numerically study a three dimensional system of athermal, overdamped, frictionless spheres, using a simplified model for a non-Brownian suspension. We compute the bulk viscosity under both uniaxial and isotropic compression as a means to address the question of whether stress-anisotropic and stress-isotropic jamming are in the same critical universality class. Carrying out a critical scaling analysis of the system pressure $p$, shear stress $σ$, and macroscopic friction $μ=σ/p$, as functions of particle packing fraction $ϕ$ and compression rate $\dotε$, we find good agreement for all critic…
We simulate numerically the compression driven jamming of athermal, frictionless, soft-core spherocylinders in two dimensions, for a range of particle aspect ratios $α$. We find the critical packing fraction $ϕ_J(α)$ for the jamming transition, and the average number of contacts per particle $z_J(α)$ at jamming. We find that both are nonmonotonic, with a peak at $α\approx 1$. We find that configurations at the compression driven jamming point are always hypostatic for all $α$, with $z_J<z_\mathrm{iso}=2d_f=6$ the isostatic value. We show that, for moderately elongated spherocylinders, there is…
This chapter is devoted to the analysis of jamming and percolation behavior of two-dimensional systems of elongated particles. We consider both continuous and discrete spaces (with the special attention to the square lattice), as well the systems with isotropically deposited and aligned particles. Overviews of different analytical and computational methods and main results are presented.
Jamming and percolation transitions in the standard random sequential adsorption of particles on regular lattices are characterized by a universal set of critical exponents. The universality class is preserved even in the presence of randomly distributed defective sites that are forbidden for particle deposition. However, using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations by depositing dimers on the square lattice and employing finite-size scaling, we provide evidence that the system does not exhibit such well-known universal features when the defects have spatial long-range (power-law) correlations. T…
We study a well known machine learning model -the perceptron- as a simple model of jamming of hard objects. We exhibit two regimes: 1) a convex optimisation regime where jamming is hypostatic and non-critical. 2) a non convex optimisation regime where jamming is isostatic and critical. We characterise the critical jamming phase through exponents describing the distributions law of forces and gaps. Surprisingly we find that these exponents coincide with the corresponding ones recently computed in high dimensional hard spheres. In addition, modifying the perceptron to a random linear programming…
Recent computer simulations have uncovered the striking difference between the jamming transition of spherical and non-spherical particles. While systems of spherical particles are isostatic at the jamming point, systems of nonspherical particles are not: the contact number and shear modulus of the former exhibit a square root singularity near jamming, while those of the latter are linearly proportional to the distance from jamming. Furthermore, while our theoretical understanding of jamming of spherical particles is well developed, the same is not true for nonspherical particles. To understan…
The behavior of a system of two-dimensional elongated particles (discorectangles) packed into a slit between two parallel walls was analyzed using a simulation approach. The packings were produced using the random sequential adsorption model with continuous positional and orientational degrees of freedom. The aspect ratio (length-to-width ratio, $\varepsilon=l/d$) of the particles was varied within the range $\varepsilon \in [1;32]$ while the distance between the walls was varied within the range $h/d\in [1;80]$. The properties of the deposits when in the jammed state (the coverage, the order …
Random sequential addition (RSA) models are used in a large variety of contexts to model particle aggregation and jamming. A key feature of these models is the algebraic time dependence of the asymptotic jamming coverage as $t\to\infty$. For the RSA of monodisperse non-spherical particles the scaling is generally believed to be $~t^{-ν}$, where $ν=1/d_{\rm f}$ for a particle with $d_{\rm f}$ degrees of freedom. While the $d_{\rm f}=1$ result of spheres (Renyi's classical car parking problem) can be derived analytically, evidence for the $1/d_{\rm f}$ scaling for arbitrary particle shapes has s…
The concept of jamming has attracted great research interest due to its broad relevance in soft matter such as liquids, glasses, colloids, foams, and granular materials, and its deep connection to the sphere packing problem and optimization problems. Here we show that the domain of amorphous jammed states of frictionless spheres can be significantly extended, from the well-known jamming-point at a fixed density, to a jamming-plane that spans the density and shear strain axes. We explore the jamming-plane, via athermal and thermal simulations of compression and shear jamming, with a help of an …
Jamming criticality defines a universality class that includes systems as diverse as glasses, colloids, foams, amorphous solids, constraint satisfaction problems, neural networks, etc. A particularly interesting feature of this class is that small interparticle forces ($f$) and gaps ($h$) are distributed according to nontrivial power laws. A recently developed mean-field (MF) theory predicts the characteristic exponents of these distributions in the limit of very high spatial dimension, $d\rightarrow\infty$ and, remarkably, their values seemingly agree with numerical estimates in physically re…
We show for the first time that collectively jammed disordered packings of three-dimensional monodisperse frictionless hard spheres can be produced and tuned using a novel numerical protocol with packing density $ϕ$ as low as 0.6. This is well below the value of 0.64 associated with the maximally random jammed state and entirely unrelated to the ill-defined ``random loose packing'' state density. Specifically, collectively jammed packings are generated with a very narrow distribution centered at any density $ϕ$ over a wide density range $ϕ\in [0.6,~0.74048\ldots]$ with variable disorder. Our r…
Numerous soft materials jam into an amorphous solid at high packing fraction. This non-equilibrium phase transition is best understood in the context of a model system in which particles repel elastically when they overlap. Recently, however, it was shown that introducing any finite amount of attraction between particles changes the universality class of the transition. The properties of this new ``sticky jamming'' class remain almost entirely unexplored. We use molecular dynamics simulations and scaling analysis to determine the shear modulus, bulk modulus, and coordination of marginal solids…
Relaxation of the packing of elongated particles (discorectangles) aligned on a line was studied numerically. The aspect ratio (length-to-width ratio) for the discorectangles was varied within the range $\varepsilon \in [1;50]$. The initial jamming (saturated) state was produced using the basic variant of the random sequential adsorption (RSA) model with random positions and orientations of particles. The relaxation was performed by allowing rotational and translational diffusion motions of the particles wile their centers remained located on the line. The effects of the aspect ratio $\varepsi…
We study the model of the totally asymmetric exclusion process with generalized update, which compared to the usual totally asymmetric exclusion process, has an additional parameter enhancing clustering of particles. We derive the exact multiparticle distributions of distances travelled by particles on the infinite lattice for two types of initial conditions: step and alternating once. Two different scaling limits of the exact formulas are studied. Under the first scaling associated to Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class we prove convergence of joint distributions of the scaled partic…
The random sequential adsorption (RSA) of identical elongated particles (discorectangles) on a line ("Paris car parking problem") was studied numerically. An off-lattice model with continuous positional and orientational degrees of freedom was considered. The possible orientations of the discorectanles were restricted between $θ\in [-θ_\text{m}; θ_\text{m}]$ while the aspect ratio (length-to-width ratio) for the discorectangles was varied within the range $\varepsilon \in [1;100]$. Additionally, the limiting case $\varepsilon=\infty$ (i.e., widthless sticks) was considered. We observed, that t…
