X-raying the Winds of Luminous Active Galaxies

We briefly describe some recent observational results, mainly at X-ray wavelengths, on the winds of luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). These winds likely play a significant role in galaxy feedback. Topics covered include (1) Relations between X-ray and UV absorption in Broad Absorption Line (BAL) and mini-BAL quasars; (2) X-ray absorption in radio-loud BAL quasars; and (3) Evidence for relativistic iron K BALs in the X-ray spectra of a few bright quasars. We also mention some key outstanding problems and prospects for future advances; e.g., with the International X-ray Observatory (IXO).

The physics of galactic winds driven by active galactic nuclei

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) drive fast winds in the interstellar medium of their host galaxies. It is commonly assumed that the high ambient densities and intense radiation fields in galactic nuclei imply short cooling times, thus making the outflows momentum-conserving. We show that cooling of high-velocity, shocked winds in AGN is in fact inefficient in a wide range of circumstances, including conditions relevant to ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), resulting in energy-conserving outflows. Gamma-Ray and Hard X-Ray Emission from Pulsar-Aided Supernovae as a Probe of Particle Acceleration in Embryonic Pulsar Wind Nebulae

It has been suggested that some classes of luminous supernovae (SNe) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are driven by newborn magnetars. Fast-rotating proto-neutron stars have also been of interest as potential sources of gravitational waves (GWs). We show that for a range of rotation periods and magnetic fields, hard X rays and GeV gamma rays provide us with a promising probe of pulsar-aided SNe. It is observationally known that young pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) in the Milky Way are very efficient lepton accelerators. Evidence for a radiatively driven disc-wind in PDS 456?

We present a newly discovered correlation between the wind outflow velocity and the X-ray luminosity in the luminous ($L_{\rm bol}\sim10^{47}\,\rm erg\,s^{-1}$) nearby ($z=0.184$) quasar PDS\,456. All the contemporary XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and Suzaku observations from 2001--2014 were revisited and we find that the centroid energy of the blueshifted Fe\,K absorption profile increases with luminosity. This translates into a correlation between the wind outflow velocity and the hard X-ray luminosity (between 7--30\,keV) where we find that $v_{\rm w}/c \propto L_{7-30}^γ$ where $γ=0.22\pm0.04$. Far-Ultraviolet Observations of Outflows from IR-Luminous Galaxies

We obtained medium-resolution ultraviolet (UV) spectra between 1150 and 1450 Angstroms of the four UV-bright, infrared (IR)-luminous starburst galaxies IRAS F08339+6517, NGC 3256, NGC 6090, and NGC 7552 using the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. Magnetic spin-down of a millisecond neutron star has been proposed as the power source of hydrogen-poor "superluminous" supernovae (SLSNe-I). Galaxy-Scale Outflows Driven by Active Galactic Nuclei

We present hydrodynamical simulations of major mergers of galaxies and study the effects of winds produced by active galactic nuclei (AGN) on interstellar gas in the AGN's host galaxy. We consider winds with initial velocities ~ 10,000 km/s and an initial momentum (energy) flux of ~ tau_w L/c (~ 0.01 tau_w L), with tau_w ~ 1-10. Mean Spectral Energy Distributions and Bolometric Corrections for Luminous Quasars

We explore the mid-infrared (mid-IR) through ultraviolet (UV) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 119,652 luminous broad-lined quasars with 0.064<z<5.46 using mid-IR data from Spitzer and WISE, near-infrared data from Two Micron All Sky Survey and UKIDSS, optical data from Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and UV data from Galaxy Evolution Explorer. Complex Radio Spectral Energy Distributions in Luminous and Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

We use the Expanded Very Large Array to image radio continuum emission from local luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) in 1 GHz windows centered at 4.7, 7.2, 29, and 36 GHz. This allows us to probe the integrated radio spectral energy distribution (SED) of the most energetic galaxies in the local universe. The 4-8 GHz flux densities agree well with previous measurements. They yield spectral indices α\approx -0.67 (where F_ν\propto ν^α) with \pm 0.15 (1σ) scatter, typical of nonthermal (synchrotron) emission from star-forming galaxies. Looking for the Wind in the Dust

The blue-shifted broad emission lines and/or broad absorption lines seen in many luminous quasars are striking evidence for a broad line region in which radiation driving plays an important role. We consider the case for a similar role for radiation driving beyond the dust sublimation radius by focussing on the infrared regime where the relationship between luminosity and the prominence of the 3-5 micron bump may be key.
