Single crystals of CeFeAsO, large enough to study the anisotropy of the magnetic properties, were grown by an optimized Sn-flux technique. The high quality of our single crystals is apparent from the highest residual resistivity ratio, RRR = 12, reported among undoped RFeAsO compounds (R=rare earth) as well as sharp anomalies in resistivity, specific heat, C(T), and thermal expansion at the different phase transitions. The magnetic susceptibility chi(T) presents a large easy-plane anisotropy consistent with the lowest crystal electric field doublet having a dominant Gamma_6 character. Curie-Weiss like susceptibilities for magnetic field parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis do not reveal an influence of a staggered field on the Ce site induced by magnetic ordering of the Fe. Furthermore, the standard signatures for antiferromagnetic order of Ce at T_N = 3.7 K observed in chi(T) and C(T) are incompatible with a Zeeman splitting Delta = 10 K of the CEF ground state doublet at low temperature due to the Fe-magnetic order as previously proposed. Our results can be reconciled with the earlier observation by assuming a comparatively stronger effect of the Ce-Ce exchange leading to a reduction of this Zeeman splitting below 15 K.
We present a detailed investigation of the electronic properties of CeFeAsO under chemical (As by P substitution) and hydrostatic pressure by means of in-house and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy. The Fe magnetism is suppressed due to both pressures and no magnetic order was observed above a P-substitution level of 40% or 5.2 GPa hydrostatic pressure. We compared both pressures and found that the isovalent As by P substitution change the crystallographic and electronic properties differently than hydrostatic pressure.
In the iron-pnictide material CeFeAsO not only the Fe moments, but also the local 4f moments of the Ce order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. We elucidate on the peculiar role of the Ce on the emergence of superconductivity. While application of pressure suppresses the iron SDW ordering temperature monotonously up to 4 GPa, the Ce-4f magnetism is stabilized, until both types of magnetic orders disappear abruptly and a narrow SC dome develops. With further increasing pressure characteristics of a Kondo-lattice system become more and more apparent in the electrical resistivity. This su…
We present results of transport and magnetic properties and heat capacity measurements on polycrystalline CeFeAsO, PrFeAsO, and NdFeAsO. These materials undergo structural phase transitions, spin density wave-like magnetic ordering of small moments on iron, and antiferromagnetic ordering of rare earth moments. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, Hall coefficient, and magnetoresistance are reported. The magnetic behavior of the materials have been investigated using Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. Transport …
The magnetic and transport behaviors of cerium substituted iron oxy-arsenide superconductor with x = 0.1 to 0.4 fluoride (F) doping have been investigated in this report. Temperature dependent susceptibility and resistivity measurements showed the 0.1 F-doped sample (CeFeAsO0.9F0.1) has a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of around 30 K. With increasing doping beyond x = 0.2 Tc saturates to around 40 K. Temperature dependent susceptibility measured in different magnetic fields for the under-doped sample showed Meissner effect in low field and the diamagnetism is still visible up to 1…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations of Ce$^{3+}$ in CeFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$($x=0,0.16$). For nonsuperconducting CeFeAsO, the Ce CEF levels have three magnetic doublets in the paramagnetic state, but these doublets split into six singlets when Fe ions order antiferromagnetically. For superconducting CeFeAsO$_{0.84}$F$_{0.16}$ ($T_c=41$ K), where the static AF order is suppressed, the Ce CEF levels have three magnetic doublets at $\hbarω=0,18.7,58.4$ meV at all temperatures. Careful measurements of the intrinsic linewidth $Γ$ and the peak …
We carried out a combined P-substitution and hydrostatic pressure study on CeFeAs_1-xP_xO single crystals in order to investigate the peculiar relationship of the local moment magnetism of Ce, the ordering of itinerant Fe moments, and their connection with the occurrence of superconductivity. Our results evidence a close relationship between the weakening of Fe magnetism and the change from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic ordering of Ce moments at p*=1.95 GPa in CeFeAs_0.78P_0.22O. The absence of superconductivity in CeFeAs_0.78P_0.22O and the presence of a narrow and strongly pressure sens…
The structural and magnetic phase transitions have been studied on NdFeAsO single crystals by neutron and x-ray diffraction complemented by resistivity and specific heat measurements. Two low-temperature phase transitions have been observed in addition to the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition at T_S = 142 K and the onset of antiferromagnetic (AFM) Fe order below T_N = 137 K. The Fe moments order AFM in the well-known stripe-like structure in the (ab) plane, but change from AFM to ferromagnetic (FM) arrangement along the c direction below T* = 15 K accompanied by the onset of Nd AFM order b…
The properties of the MoSr2RCu2O8 (R=rare earth) system are found to systematically change with the contraction of the R ions. For the light R ions (La-Nd) the samples are paramagnetic down to 5 K, whereas in the intermediate range (Sm-Tb), the Mo sublattice orders antiferromagnetically at TN, ranging from 11 to 24 K. For the heavy R ions, Ho-Tm and Y, superconductivity appears at TC in the range 19-27 K and antiferromagnetism sets in at TN < TC. This latter behavior resembles most of the magneto-superconductors, but is in sharp contrast to the iso-structural RuSr2RCu2O8 system where TN > TC.
Fluoride-doped iron-based oxypnictides containing rare-earth gadolinium (GdFeAsO0.8F0.2) and co-doping with yttrium (Gd0.8Y0.2FeAsO0.8F0.2) have been prepared via conventional solid state reaction at ambient pressure. The non-yttrium substituted oxypnictide show superconducting transition as high as 43.9 K from temperature dependent resistance measurements with the Meissner effect observed at a lower temperature of 40.8 K from temperature dependent magnetization measurements. By replacing a small amount of gadolinium with yttrium Tc was observed to be lowered by 10 K which might be caused by a…
We report zero field muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements on RFeAsO with R = La, Ce, Pr, and Sm. We study the interaction of the FeAs and R (rare earth) electronic systems in the non superconducting magnetically ordered parent compounds of RFeAsO{1-x}Fx superconductors via a detailed comparison of the local hyperfine fields at the muon site with available Moessbauer spectroscopy and neutron scattering data. These studies provide microscopic evidence of long range commensurate magnetic Fe order with the Fe moments not varying by more than 15 % within the series RFeAsO with R = La, Ce, Pr, a…
We have investigated the MoSr2R1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10-d (Mo-1222R, R=rare earth) system by several complementary experimental techniques. In contrast to the iso-structural RuSr2R1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10-d (Ru-1222) system, in which superconductivity (SC) in the CuO2 planes and weak-ferromagnetism in the Ru sub-lattice coexists, in Mo-1222, displays a competition between the two states, namely, SC vanishes when the magnetic order sets in. The contraction in the R elements leads to a change of the physical states. The light R ions (Pr and Nd) are paramagnetic down to 5 K, whereas the middle R ions (Sm and Eu) are…
The observation of superconductivity in infinite layer nickelate (Nd,Sr)NiO$_{2}$ thin films has led to rapid theoretical and experimental investigations of these copper-oxide-analogue systems [1-15]. Superconductivity has also been found in (Pr,Sr)NiO$_{2}$ [16,17], but not previously in (La,Sr)NiO$_{2}$ [2], raising a fundamental question whether superconductivity is associated with the presence of rare-earth moments [18,19]. Here we show that with significant materials optimization, substantial portions of the La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ phase diagram can enter the regime of coherent low-te…
The effect of pressure on the copper and praseodymium magnetic order in the system Nd(1-x)$Pr(x)Ba2Cu3$O7 with x=0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1 was investigated by means of the muon spin rotation (muSR) technique. It was found that the effect of pressure on the Neel temperatures of both copper and praseodymium is positive for the whole range of Pr concentrations (0.3<x<1) studied. These findings are in contrast with a number of previous reports and clarify some of the puzzles related to the effect of pressure on superconductivity and magnetism in the praseodymium-substituted R}(1-x)$Pr(x)Ba2Cu3O7 system…
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of crystal field transitions in PrFeAsO, PrFeAsO0.87F0.13, and NdFeAsO0.85F0.15. Doping with fluorine produces additional crystal field excitations, providing evidence that there are two distinct charge environments around the rare earth ions, with probabilities that are consistent with a random distribution of dopants on the oxygen sites. The 4f electrons of the Pr3+ and Nd3+ ions have non-magnetic and magnetic ground states, respectively, indicating that the enhancement of Tc compared to LaFeAsO1-xFx is not due to rare earth magnetism.
In the work the analysis of crystal chemical researches of nickel borocarbides RNi2B2C (R = rare earth) is given. The reasons of representation of dependence of Tc from crystal chemical parameters by two separate curves for magnetic and nonmagnetic R are considered. Common for all R dependences of Tc from crystal chemical parameters similar existing in layered quasi-two-dimensional systems (HTSC cuprates and diborides) are established. The absence of influence on borocarbides Tc of magnetic properties R is determined. On the basis of the found correlations the radii of a number of rare earths …
Comparing with the widely known transitional metal based van der Waals (vdW) materials, rare-earth based ones are rarely explored in the research of intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. In this work, we report the physical properties of DyOCl, a rare-earth based vdW magnetic insulator with direct band gap of $\sim 5.72~eV$. The magnetic order of bulk DyOCl is determined by neutron scattering as the $A$-type antiferromagnetic structure below the Néel temperature $T_N=10~$K. The large magnetic moment near 10.1 $ μ_{B} $/Dy lies parallel to the $a$-axis with strong uniaxial magnetic anisotro…
The magnetic ordering temperature of some rare earth based heavy fermion compounds is strongly pressure-dependent and can be completely suppressed at a critical pressure, p$_c$, making way for novel correlated electron states close to this quantum critical point. We have studied the clean heavy fermion antiferromagnets CePd$_2$Si$_2$ and CeIn$_3$ in a series of resistivity measurements at high pressures up to 3.2 GPa and down to temperatures in the mK region. In both materials, superconductivity appears in a small window of a few tenths of a GPa on either side of p$_c$. We present detailed mea…
We report a single-crystal study on the magnetism of the rare-earth compound PrTiNbO$_6$ that experimentally realizes the zigzag pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ quantum antiferromagnetic chain model. Random crystal electric field caused by the site mixing between non-magnetic Ti$^{4+}$ and Nb$^{5+}$, results in the non-Kramers ground state quasi-doublet of Pr$^{3+}$ with the effective pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Ising moment. Despite the antiferromagnetic intersite coupling of about 4 K, no magnetic freezing is detected down to 0.1 K, whilst the system approaches its ground state with almost zero residu…
