We use stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation to study dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensation. We show that cooling into a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) can create solitons with density given by the cooling rate and by the critical exponents of the transition. Thus, counting solitons left in its wake should allow one to determine the critical exponents z and nu for a BEC phase transition. The same information can be extracted from two-point correlation functions.
In this paper, we formulate extended stream functions (ESFs) to describe the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensations in the two-dimensional space. The ordinary stream function is applicable only for stationary and incompressible superfluids, whereas the ESFs can describe the dynamics of compressible and non-stationary superfluids. The ESFs are composed of two stream functions, i.e., one describes the compressible density modulations and the other the incompressible rotational superflow. As an application, we study the snake instability of the dark soliton in a rectangular potential in detail b…
We propose a protocol for the simultaneous controlled creation of multiple concentric ring dark solitons in a toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. The decay of these solitons into a vortex-antivortex necklace shows revivals of the soliton structure, but eventually becomes an example of quantum turbulence.
In the presence of a linear potential with an arbitrary time-dependence, Hirota method is developed carefully for applying into the effective mean-field model of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation with repulsive interaction. We obtain the exact nonautonomous soliton solution (NSS) analytically. These solutions show that the time-dependent potential can affect the velocity of NSS. In some special cases the velocity has the character of both increase and oscillation with time. A detail analysis for the asymptotic behaviour of solutions shows that the collision of two NSSs is elasti…
We predict the existence of a self-localized solution in a nonresonantly pumped exciton-polariton condensate. The solution has a shape resembling the well-known hyperbolic tangent profile of the dark soliton, but exhibits several distinct features. We find that it performs small oscillations, which are transformed into 'soliton explosions' at lower pumping intensities. Moreover, after hundreds or thousands of picoseconds of apparently stable evolution the soliton decays abruptly, which is explained by the acceleration instability found previously in the Bekki-Nozaki hole solutions of the compl…
Solitons and vortices obtain widespread attention in different physical systems as they offer potential use in information storage, processing, and communication. In exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities, solitons and vortices can be created optically. However, dark solitons are unstable and vortices cannot be spatially controlled. In the present work we demonstrate the existence of stable dark solitons and vortices under non-resonant incoherent excitation of a polariton condensate with a simple spatially periodic pump. In one dimension, we show that an additional cohere…
When a system crosses a second-order phase transition on a finite timescale, spontaneous symmetry breaking can cause the development of domains with independent order parameters, which then grow and approach each other creating boundary defects. This is known as Kibble-Zurek mechanism. Originally introduced in cosmology, it applies both to classical and quantum phase transitions, in a wide variety of physical systems. Here we report on the spontaneous creation of solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates via the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. We measure the power-law dependence of defects number with the…
The truncated Wigner and positive-P phase-space representations are used to study the dynamics of a one-dimensional Bose gas. This allows calculations of the breathing quantum dynamics of higher-order solitons with 10^{3}-10^{5} particles, as in realistic Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) experiments. Although classically stable, these decay quantum mechanically. Our calculations show that there are large nonlocal correlations. These also violate the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, showing the presence of nonclassical quantum entanglement.
We study analytically and numerically the condensation of a driven-dissipative exciton-polariton system using symmetric nonresonant pumping geometries. We show that the lowest condensation threshold solution carries a definite parity as a consequence of the symmetric excitation profile. At higher pump intensities competition between the two parities can result in critical quenching of one and saturation of the other. Using long pump channels, we show that the competition of the condensate parities gives rise to a different type of topologically stable defect propagating indefinitely along the …
The dark and bright solitons in different systems are already known in Klein-Gordon lattice. Instead of an external driving force, if the intrinsic field is only considered, then the modal dynamics for small oscillations could be characterized by the bound state in a limited range of frequency, revealed via associated Legendre polynomial. Bose Einstein condensation takes place around bosonic particles having different wave functions within the bound states in the temperature region T = 0 to Tc having implication for the effective mass of the system. The pairing and interplay between the dark a…

We report the creation of quasi-1D excited matter-wave solitons, "breathers", by quenching the strength of the interactions in a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive interactions. We characterize the resulting breathing dynamics and quantify the effects of the aspect ratio of the confining potential, the strength of the quench, and the proximity of the 1D-3D crossover for the 2-soliton breather. We furthermore demonstrate the complex dynamics of a 3-soliton breather created by a stronger interaction quench. Our experimental results, which compare well with numerical simulations, provide a …
It is commonly known that two-dimensional mean-field models of optical and matter waves with the cubic self-attraction cannot produce stable solitons in free space because of the occurrence of the collapse in the same setting. By means of the numerical analysis and variational approximation, we demonstrate that the two-component model of the Bose-Einstein condensate, with the spin-orbit Rashba coupling and cubic attractive interactions, gives rise to solitary-vortex complexes of two types: semi-vortices (SVs, with a vortex in one component and a fundamental soliton in the other), and mixed mod…
We report Bose-Einstein condensation of 84-Sr in an optical dipole trap. Efficient laser cooling on the narrow intercombination line and an ideal s-wave scattering length allow creation of large condensates (N0 ~ 3x10^5) even though the natural abundance of this isotope is only 0.6%. Condensation is heralded by the emergence of a low-velocity component in time-of-flight images.
We give explicit connections of quantum one-hole excited states to classical solitons for the one-dimensional Bose gas with repulsive short-range interactions. We call the quantum states connected to classical solitons the quantum soliton states. We show that the matrix element of the canonical field operator between quantum soliton states with $N-1$ and $N$ particles is given by a dark soliton of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the weak coupling case. We suggest that the matrix element corresponds to the order parameter of BEC in the quantum soliton state. The result should be useful in the …
We examine the possibility of observing Bose condensation of a confined two-dimensional polariton gas in an organic quantum well. We deduce a suitable parameterization of a model Hamiltonian based upon the cavity geometry, the biexciton binding energy, and similar spectroscopic and structural data. By converting the sum-over-states to a semiclassical integration over $d$-dimensional phase space, we show that while an ideal 2-D Bose gas will not undergo condensation, an interacting gas with the Bogoliubov dispersion $H(p)\approx s p$ close to $p=0$ will undergo Bose condensation at a given crit…
The controlled creation of dark-bright (DB) soliton trains in multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is a topic of ongoing interest. In this work we generalize earlier findings on the creation of dark soliton trains in single-component BECs [A. Romero-Ros et al., Phys. Rev. A 103, 023329 (2021)] to two-component BECs. By choosing suitable filled box-type initial configurations (FBTCs) and solving the direct scattering problem for the defocusing vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions we obtain analytical expressions for the DB soliton solutions produced…
We propose an indirect method to observe radiation from an incomplete soliton with sufficiently large amplitude. We show that the radiation causes a notched structure on the envelope of the wave packet in the momentum space. The origin of this structure is a result of interference between the main body of oscillating solitons and the small radiation in the momentum space. We numerically integrate the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and perform Fourier transformation to confirm that the predicted structure really appears. We also show the simple model which reproduces the qualitative result. Exp…
Dark soliton solutions in the one-dimensional classical nonlinear Schrödinger equation has been considered to be related to the yrast states corresponding to the type-II excitations in the Lieb-Liniger model. However, the relation is nontrivial and remains unclear because a dark soliton localized in space breaks the translation symmetry, while yrast states are translationally invariant. In this work, we construct a symmetry-broken quantum soliton state and investigate the relation to the yrast states. By interpreting a quantum dark soliton as a Bose-Einstein condensation to the wave function o…
Embedded solitons are rare self-localized nonlinear structures that, counterintuitively, survive inside a continuous background of resonant states. While this topic has been widely studied in nonlinear optics, it has received almost no attention in the field of Bose-Einstein condensation. In this work, we consider experimentally realizable Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in one-dimensional optical lattices and demonstrate that they support continuous families of stable three-dimensional (3D) embedded solitons. These solitons can exist inside the resonant continuous Bloch bands because they ar…
The aim of this introductory article is two-fold. First, we aim to offer a general introduction to the theme of Bose-Einstein condensates, and briefly discuss the evolution of a number of relevant research directions during the last two decades. Second, we introduce and present the articles that appear in this Special Volume of Romanian Reports in Physics celebrating the conclusion of the second decade since the experimental creation of Bose-Einstein condensation in ultracold gases of alkali-metal atoms.
We propose a scheme for the creation of stable three dimensional bright solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates, i.e., the matter-wave analog of so-called spatio-temporal "light bullets". Off-resonant dressing to Rydberg $nD$-states is shown to provide nonlocal attractive interactions, leading to self-trapping of mesoscopic atomic clouds by a collective excitation of a Rydberg atom pair. We present detailed potential calculations, and demonstrate the existence of stable solitons under realistic experimental conditions by means of numerical simulations.
We report a simple method for the creation of Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{85}$Rb by direct evaporation in a crossed optical dipole trap. The independent control of the trap frequencies and magnetic bias field afforded by the trapping scheme permits full control of the trapped atomic sample, enabling the collision parameters to be easily manipulated to achieve efficient evaporation in the vicinity of the 155 G Feshbach resonance. We produce nearly pure condensates of up to $4\times10^4$ atoms and demonstrate the tunable nature of the atomic interactions.
BEC of exciton-polaritons and related effects such as superfluidity1,2, spontaneous symmetry breaking3,4 and quantised vortices5,6 open way to creation of novel light sources7 and optical logic elements8. Remarkable observations of exciton-polariton BEC in microcavities9-12 have been reported in the recent ten years. Very recently, thermalisation and subsequent condensation of cavity photons in a dye-filled microcavity have been observed13. Here we show that BEC of both exciton-polaritons and photons can be created in the same system under different optical excitation conditions. A dynamic pha…
We propose a realistic experimental setup for creating quasi-two-dimensional (2D) bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), the existence of which was proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 090406 (2008). A challenging feature of the expected solitons is their strong inherent anisotropy, due to the necessary in-plane orientation of the local moments in the dipolar gas. This may be the first chance of making multidimensional matter-wave solitons, as well as solitons featuring the anistropy due to their intrinsic dynamics. Our analysis is based on the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equa…
