We present 3-D models of dust distribution around beta Pictoris that produce the best fits to the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys' (HST/ACS) images obtained by Golimowski and co-workers. We allow for the presence of either one or two separate axisymmetric dust disks. The density models are analytical, radial two-power-laws joined smoothly at a cross-over radius with density exponentially decreasing away from the mid-plane of the disks. Two-disk models match the data best, yielding a reduced chi^2 of ~1.2. Our two-disk model reproduces many of the asymmetries reported in the literature and suggests that it is the secondary (tilted) disk which is largely responsible for them. Our model suggests that the secondary disk is not constrained to the inner regions of the system (extending out to at least 250 AU) and that it has a slightly larger total area of dust than the primary, as a result of slower fall-off of density with radius and height. This surprising result raises many questions about the origin and dynamics of such a pair of disks. The disks overlap, but can coexist owing to their low optical depths and therefore long mean collision times. We find that the two disks have dust replenishment times on the order of 10^4 yr at ~100 AU, hinting at the presence of planetesimals that are responsible for the production of 2nd generation dust. A plausible conjecture, which needs to be confirmed by physical modeling of the collisional dynamics of bodies in the disks, is that the two observed disks are derived from underlying planetesimal disks; such disks would be anchored by the gravitational influence of planets located at less than 70 AU from beta Pic that are themselves in slightly inclined orbits.
BRITE-Constellation has observed the exoplanet host star $β$ Pictoris for 225 days from November 2016 to June 2017. These data allow for an accurate description of the pulsational properties and an asteroseismic interpretation. They were also observed as part of an international observing campaign which aims to detect the transit of $β$ Pictoris b's Hill sphere and study the circumstellar disk around $β$ Pictoris itself.
We present observations at 1.3 millimeters wavelength of the beta Pictoris debris disk with beam size 4.3 x 2.6 arcsec (83 x 50 AU) from the Submillimeter Array. The emission shows two peaks separated by ~7 arsec along the disk plane, which we interpret as a highly inclined dust ring or belt. A simple model constrains the belt center to 94+/-8 AU, close to the prominent break in slope of the optical scattered light. We identify this region as the location as the main reservoir of dust producing planetesimals in the disk.
We present high resolution near-infrared spectra of $β$ Pictoris - a nearby young star with a debris disk. Fundamental low-J CO absorption lines are detected and strict upper limits are placed on the flux of v=2-1 low-J CO emission lines. The limit on the UV fluorescent emission flux in the v=2-1 lines is used to place a tight constraint on the inner extent of the CO gas. Assuming \ion{H}{1} is the primary collision partner, the subthermal population of the low-J v=0 rotational levels constrains the density of the gas in the disk to $n_{\rm H} = (2.5^{+7.1}_{-1.2})\times10^5$ cm$^{-3}$. If the…
Aims. We look for common proper motion companions to stars of the nearby young beta Pictoris moving group. Methods. First, we compiled a list of 185 beta Pictoris members and candidate members from 35 representative works. Next, we used the Aladin and STILTS virtual observatory tools, and the PPMXL proper motion and Washington Double Star catalogues to look for companion candidates. The resulting potential companions were subjects of a dedicated astro-photometric follow-up using public data from all-sky surveys. After discarding 67 sources by proper motion and 31 by colour-magnitude diagrams, …
We present observations of the 51 Ophiuchi circumstellar disk made with the Keck interferometer operating in nulling mode at N-band. We model these data simultaneously with VLTI-MIDI visibility data and a Spitzer IRS spectrum using a variety of optically-thin dust cloud models and an edge-on optically-thick disk model. We find that single-component optically-thin disk models and optically-thick disk models are inadequate to reproduce the observations, but an optically-thin two-component disk model can reproduce all of the major spectral and interferometric features. Our preferred disk model co…
We present spectral and kinematic evidence that 2MASS J06085283-2753583 (M8.5gamma) is a member of the beta Pictoris Moving Group (BPMG, age ~12 Myr), making it the latest-type known member of this young, nearby association. We confirm low-gravity spectral morphology at both medium and high resolutions in the near-infrared. We present new radial velocity and proper motion measurements and use these to calculate galactic location and space motion consistent with other high-probability members of the BPMG. The predicted mass range consistent with the object's effective temperature, surface gravi…
We report the identification of a new wide separation binary (LDS 5606) in the ~20 Myr-old beta Pic moving group. This M5+M5 pair has a projected separation of 26'', or ~1700 AU at a distance of 65 pc. Both stars host warm circumstellar disks and many strong hydrogen and helium emission lines. Spectroscopic observations reveal signatures of youth for both stars and on-going mass accretion in the primary. The properties of LDS 5606 make it an older analog to the ~8 Myr TWA 30 system, which is also composed of a pair of widely separated mid-M dwarfs, each hosting their own warm circumstellar dis…
Optical spectroscopy is used to confirm membership for 8 low-mass candidates in the young Beta Pic moving group (BPMG) via their radial velocities, chromospheric activity and kinematic parallaxes. We searched for the presence of the Li I 6708A resonance feature and combined the results with literature measurements of other BPMG members to find the age-dependent lithium depletion boundary (LDB) -- the luminosity at which Li remains unburned in a coeval group. The LDB age of the BPMG is 21 +/- 4 Myr and insensitive to the choice of low-mass evolutionary models. This age is more precise, likely t…
We present spectra of an M-type, binary star system (LDS 5606) that belongs to the nearby ~20 Myr old beta Pictoris moving group. Both stars are very dusty; the dustier member displays optical emission lines from eight elements indicative of ongoing mass accretion. The spectra of both stars contain oxygen forbidden line emission at 6302 and 5579 A, consistent with a recent model of far ultraviolet photodissociation of OH molecules in a circumstellar disk. These are the oldest dwarf stars presently known to display such a phenomenon. The spectral energy distribution of the dustier star indicate…
We present first results from follow-up of targets in the northern hemisphere Beta Pictoris and AB Doradus moving group candidate list of Schlieder, Lepine, and Simon (2012). We obtained high-resolution, near-infrared spectra of 27 candidate members to measure their radial velocities and confirm consistent group kinematics. We identify 15 candidates with consistent predicted and measured radial velocities, perform analyses of their 6-dimensional (U,V,W,X,Y,Z) Galactic kinematics, and compare to known group member distributions. Based on these analyses, we propose that 7 Beta Pic and 8 AB Dor c…
The Antartica Search for Transiting Extrasolar Planets (ASTEP), an automatized 400 mm telescope located at Concordia station in Antarctica, monitored beta Pictoris continuously to detect any variability linked to the transit of the Hill sphere of its planet beta Pictoris b. The long observation sequence, from March to September 2017, combined with the quality and high level duty cycle of our data, enables us to detect and analyse the delta Scuti pulsations of the star. Time series photometric data were obtained using aperture photometry by telescope defocussing. The 66 418 data points were ana…
Optical spectroscopic observations are reported for 24 and 23, nearby, proper-motion-selected M-dwarf candidate members of the Beta Pictoris and AB Doradus moving groups (BPMG and ABDMG). Using kinematic criteria, the presence of both Halpha emission and high X-ray-to-bolometric luminosity, and position in absolute colour-magnitude diagrams, 10 and 6 of these candidates are confirmed as likely members of the BPMG and ABDMG respectively. Equivalent widths or upper limits for the Li I 6708A line are reported and the lithium depletion boundary (LDB) age of the BPMG is revisited. Whilst non-magnet…
As part of our continuing effort to identify new, low-mass members of nearby, young moving groups (NYMGs), we present a list of young, low-mass candidates in the northern hemisphere. We used our proven proper motion selection procedure and ROSAT-X-ray and GALEX-UV activity indicators to identify 204 young stars as candidate members of the Beta Pictoris and AB Doradus NYMGs. Definitive membership assignment of a given candidate will require a measurement of its radial velocity and distance. We present a simple system of indices to characterize the young candidates and help prioritize follow up …
Ever since the discovery of the edge-on circumstellar disk around beta Pictoris, a standing question has been why the gas observed against the star in absorption is not rapidly expelled by the strong radiation pressure from the star. A solution to the puzzle has been suggested to be that the neutral elements that experience the radiation force also are rapidly ionized, and so are only able to accelerate to an average limiting velocity v_ion. Once ionized, the elements are rapidly braked by C II, which is observed to be at least 20x overabundant in the disk with respect to other species. A pred…
There is evidence in the 125-Myr Pleiades cluster, and more recently in the 5-Myr NGC 2264 cluster, that rotation plays a key role in the Lithium (Li) depletion processes among low-mass stars. Fast rotators appear to be less Li-depleted than equal-mass slow rotators. We intend to explore the existence of a Li depletion - rotation connection among the beta Pictoris members at an age of about 24 Myr, and to use such correlation either to confirm or to improve the age estimate based on the Lithium Depletion Boundary (LDB) modeling. We have photometrically monitored all the known members of the be…
We present ground-based observations of the disk around the A-type star $β$ Pictoris to perform a close inspection of the inner disk morphology. Images were collected with NACO, the AO-assisted near-IR instrument on the VLT (ESO) which includes two types of coronagraphs: classical Lyot masks and phase masks. In this program we took advantage of both types of coronagraphs in two spectral bands, H-band for the Lyot mask and Ks-band for the phase mask. In addition, we simulated an extended object to understand the limitations in deconvolution of coronagraphic images. The reduced coronagraphic ima…
We have used the Aladin sky atlas of the Virtual Observatory to look for new common proper-motion pairs in three young stellar kinematic groups: Local Association (~10-120 Ma), Tucana-Horologium (~30 Ma) and ? Pictoris (~12 Ma). We have found 9 new and 14 known common proper-motion companions to the 210 investigated stars. With the CAFOS instrument at the 2.2m Calar Alto telescope, we have investigated in detail one of the new pairs, the HD 143809 AB system, which is formed by a bright G0V primary star and a previously unknown young M1.0-1.5Ve star.

There are a variety of different techniques available to estimate the ages of pre-main-sequence stars. Components of physical pairs, thanks to their strict coevality and the mass difference, such as the binary system analysed in this paper, are best suited to test the effectiveness of these different techniques. We consider the system WW Psa + TX Psa whose membership of the 25-Myr beta Pictoris association has been well established by earlier works. We investigate which age dating technique provides the best agreement between the age of the system and that of the association. We have photometr…
We have detected [C I] 3P1-3P0 emissions in the gaseous debris disks of 49 Ceti and Beta Pictoris with the 10 m telescope of the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment, which is the first detection of such emissions. The line profiles of [C I] are found to resemble those of CO(J=3-2) observed with the same telescope and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. This result suggests that atomic carbon (C) coexists with CO in the debris disks, and is likely formed by the photodissociation of CO. Assuming an optically thin [C I] emission with the excitation temperature ranging from 30…
Aims. We search for low-mass companions in the innermost region (<300 mas, i.e., 6 AU) of the beta Pic planetary system. Methods. We obtained interferometric closure phase measurements in the K-band with the VLTI/AMBER instrument used in its medium spectral resolution mode. Fringe stabilization was provided by the FINITO fringe tracker. Results. In a search region of between 2 and 60 mas in radius, our observations exclude at 3 sigma significance the presence of companions with K-band contrasts greater than 5e-3 for 90% of the possible positions in the search zone (i.e., 90% completeness). The…
We present results from our continuing program to identify new, low-mass, members of the nearby young moving groups (NYMGs) using a proper motion selection algorithm and various observational techniques. We have three goals: 1) To provide high priority targets for exoplanet searches by direct imaging, 2) To complete the census of the membership in the NYMGs down to ~0.1 Msun, and thus 3) Provide a well-characterized sample of nearby (median distances at least twice as close as the Taurus and Ophiuchus SFR's), young (8-50 Myr) stars for detailed study of their physical properties and multiplici…
We confirm 66 low-mass stellar and brown dwarf systems (K7-M9) plus 19 visual or spectroscopic companions of the beta Pictoris Moving Group (BPMG). Of these, 41 are new discoveries, increasing the known low-mass members by 45%. We also add four objects to the 14 known with masses predicted to be less than 0.07 Msun. Our efficient photometric+kinematic selection process identified 104 low-mass candidates which we observed with ground-based spectroscopy. We collected infrared observations of the latest spectral types (>M5) to search for low gravity objects. These and all <M5 candidates were obse…
The Beta Pictoris Moving Group is a nearby stellar association of young (12Myr) co-moving stars including the classical debris disk star beta Pictoris. Due to their proximity and youth they are excellent targets when searching for submillimetre emission from cold, extended, dust components produced by collisions in Kuiper-Belt-like disks. They also allow an age independent study of debris disk properties as a function of other stellar parameters. We observed 7 infrared-excess stars in the Beta Pictoris Moving Group with the LABOCA bolometer array, operating at a central wavelength of 870 micro…
The metallic gas associated with the Beta Pic debris disk is not believed to be primordial, but arises from the destruction of dust grains. Recent observations have shown that carbon and oxygen in this gas are exceptionally overabundant compared to other elements, by some 400 times. We study the origin of this enrichment under two opposing hypothesis, preferential production, where the gas is produced with the observed unusual abundance (as may happen if gas is produced by photo-desorption from C/O-rich icy grains), and preferential depletion, where the gas evolves to the observed state from a…
Young brown dwarfs are analogs to giant exoplanets, as they share effective temperatures, near-infrared colors, and surface gravities. Thus, the detailed characterization of young brown dwarfs might shed light on the study of giant exoplanets, that we are currently unable to observe with sufficient signal-to-noise to allow precise characterization of their atmospheres. 2MASS J22081363+2921215 is a young L3 brown dwarf, member of the beta-Pictoris young moving group (23 +/-3 Myr), that shares its effective temperature and mass with the beta Pictoris b giant exoplanet. We performed a ~2.5 hr spe…
Direct imaging of exoplanets requires both high contrast and high spatial resolution. Here, we present the first scientific results obtained with the newly commissioned Apodizing Phase Plate coronagraph (APP) on VLT/NACO. We detected the exoplanet beta Pictoris b in the narrow band filter centered at 4.05 micron (NB4.05). The position angle (209.13 +- 2.12 deg) and the projected separation to its host star (0."354 +- 0".012, i.e., 6.8 +- 0.2 AU at a distance of 19.3 pc) are in good agreement with the recently presented data from Lagrange et al. (2010). Comparing the observed NB4.05 magnitude o…
Context. The orbit of the giant planet discovered around beta Pic is slightly inclined with respect to the outer parts of the debris disc, which creates a warp in the inner debris disc. This inclination might be explained by gravitational interactions with other planets. Aims. We aim to search for additional giant planets located at smaller angular separations from the star. Methods. We used the new L'-band AGPM coronagraph on VLT/NACO, which provides an exquisite inner working angle. A long observing sequence was obtained on beta Pic in pupil-tracking mode. To derive sensitivity limits, the c…
Equal-mass stars in young open clusters and loose associations exhibit a wide spread of rotation periods, which likely originates from differences in the initial rotation periods and in the primordial disc lifetimes. We want to explore if the gravitational effects by nearby companions may play an additional role in producing the observed rotation period spread. We measure the photometric rotation periods of components of multiple stellar systems and look for correlations of the period differences among the components to their reciprocal distances. In this paper, we analysed the triple system A…
Low-mass members of young stellar associations exhibit a wide spread of rotation periods. Such a spread originates from distributions of masses and initial rotation periods. However, multiplicity can also play a significant role. We investigate the role played by physical companions in shortening the primordial disc lifetime. We have compiled the most extensive list of low-mass members of the young 25-Myr beta Pictoris association. We have measured the rotation periods of about all members and used updated UVWXYZ components to assess their membership. We built the rotation period distribution …
We present and analyze a new M' detection of the young exoplanet beta Pictoris b from 2008 VLT/NaCo data at a separation of ~ 4 AU and a high signal-to-noise rereduction of L' data taken in December 2009. Based on our orbital analysis, the planet's orbit is viewed almost perfectly edge-on (i ~ 89 degrees) and has a Saturn-like semimajor axis of 9.50 (+3.93, -1.7) AU. Intriguingly, the planet's orbit is aligned with the major axis of the outer disk (Omega ~ 31 degrees) but probably misaligned with the warp/inclined disk at 80 AU often cited as a signpost for the planet's existence. Our results …
Context. Debris discs are thought to be formed through the collisional grinding of planetesimals, and can be considered as the outcome of planet formation. Understanding the properties of gas and dust in debris discs can help us to comprehend the architecture of extrasolar planetary systems. Herschel Space Observatory far-infrared (IR) photometry and spectroscopy have provided a valuable dataset for the study of debris discs gas and dust composition. This paper is part of a series of papers devoted to the study of Herschel PACS observations of young stellar associations. Aims. This work aims a…
Photometric monitoring of Beta Pictoris in 1981 showed anomalous fluctuations of up to 4% over several days, consistent with foreground material transiting the stellar disk. The subsequent discovery of the gas giant planet Beta Pictoris b and the predicted transit of its Hill sphere to within 0.1 au projected distance of the planet provided an opportunity to search for the transit of a circumplanetary disk in this $21\pm 4$ Myr-old planetary system. Continuous broadband photometric monitoring of Beta Pictoris requires ground-based observatories at multiple longitudes to provide redundancy and …
We intended to compile the most complete catalog of bona fide members and candidate members of the beta Pictoris association, and to measure their rotation periods and basic properties from our own observations, public archives, and exploring the literature. We carried out a multi-observatories campaign to get our own photometric time series and collected all archived public photometric data time series for the stars in our catalog. Each time series was analyzed with the Lomb-Scargle and CLEAN periodograms to search for the stellar rotation periods. We complemented the measured rotational prop…
The young star beta Pictoris is well known for its dusty debris disk, produced through the grinding down by collisions of planetesimals, kilometre-sized bodies in orbit around the star. In addition to dust, small amounts of gas are also known to orbit the star, likely the result from vaporisation of violently colliding dust grains. The disk is seen edge on and from previous absorption spectroscopy we know that the gas is very rich in carbon relative to other elements. The oxygen content has been more difficult to assess, however, with early estimates finding very little oxygen in the gas at a …
We build a four-dimensional linear model of object membership in the Beta Pictoris moving group (BPMG), using two nested applications of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to high-quality data on about 1.5 million objects. These data contain the objects' galactic space velocities and also their Gaia $G$ magnitudes. Through PCA, they ultimately result in a four-dimensional straight line, referred to as PC $1'$, about which both the bona fide members used to obtain the straight line and the candidate members used to test the model congregate at generally small distances. Our bona fide members co…
The edge-on debris disk of the nearby young star Beta Pictoris shows an unusual brightness asymmetry in the form of a clump. The clump has been detected in both the mid-IR and CO and its origin has so far remained uncertain. Here we present new mid-IR observations of Beta Pic to track any motion of the dust clump. Together with previous observations, the data span a period of 12 years. We measured any projected displacement of the dust clump over the 12-yr period to be $0.2^{+1.3}_{-1.4}$ au away from the star based on the median and 1$σ$ uncertainty, and constrain this displacement to be <11 …
The nearby young star beta Pictoris hosts a rich and complex planetary system, with at least two giant planets and a nearly edge-on debris disk that contains several dynamical subpopulations of planetesimals. While the inner ranges of the debris disk have been studied extensively, less information is known about the outer, fainter parts of the disk. Here we present an analysis of archival FORS V-band imaging data from 2003-2004, which have previously not been explored scientifically because the halo substructure of the bright stellar point spread function is complex. Through a high-contrast sc…
The debris disk surrounding $β$ Pictoris has a gas composition rich in carbon and oxygen, relative to solar abundances. Two possible scenarios have been proposed to explain this enrichment. The preferential production scenario suggests that the gas produced may be naturally rich in C and O, while the alternative preferential depletion scenario states that the enrichment has evolved to the current state from a gas with solar-like abundances. In the latter case, the radiation pressure from the star expels the gas outwards, leaving behind species less sensitive to stellar radiation such as C and …
Exoplanet properties crucially depend on their host stars' parameters. In case the exoplanet host star shows pulsations, asteroseismology can be used for an improved description of the stellar parameters. We aim to revisit the pulsational properties of beta Pic and identify its pulsation modes from normalised amplitudes in five different passbands. We also investigate the potential presence of a magnetic field. We conduct a frequency analysis using three seasons of BRITE-Constellation observations in the BRITE blue and red filters, the ~620-day long bRing light curve and the nearly 8-year long…
We recently reported on the detection of a possible planetary-mass companion to Beta Pictoris at a projected separation of 8 AU from the star, using data taken in November 2003 with NaCo, the adaptive-optics system installed on the Very Large Telescope UT4. Eventhough no second epoch detection was available, there are strong arguments to favor a gravitationally bound companion rather than a background object. If confirmed and located at a physical separation of 8 AU, this young, hot (~1500 K), massive Jovian companion (~8 Mjup) would be the closest planet to its star ever imaged, could be form…
While beta Pic is known to host silicates in ring-like structures, whether the properties of these silicate dust vary with stellocentric distance remains an open question. We re-analyze the beta Pictoris debris disk spectrum from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) and a new IRTF/SpeX spectrum to investigate trends in Fe/Mg ratio, shape, and crystallinity in grains as a function of wavelength, a proxy for stellocentric distance. By analyzing a re-calibrated and re-extracted spectrum, we identify a new 18 micron forsterite emission feature and recover a 23 micron forsterite emission feature…
We present new observations of the planet beta Pictoris b from 2018 with GPI, the first GPI observations following conjunction. Based on these new measurements, we perform a joint orbit fit to the available relative astrometry from ground-based imaging, the Hipparcos Intermediate Astrometric Data (IAD), and the Gaia DR2 position, and demonstrate how to incorporate the IAD into direct imaging orbit fits. We find a mass consistent with predictions of hot-start evolutionary models and previous works following similar methods, though with larger uncertainties: 12.8 [+5.3, -3.2] M_Jup. Our eccentri…
We analyze new/archival VLT/NaCo and Gemini/NICI high-contrast imaging of the young, self-luminous planet $β$ Pictoris b in seven near-to-mid IR photometric filters, using advanced image processing methods to achieve high signal-to-noise, high precision measurements. While $β$ Pic b's near-IR colors mimick that of a standard, cloudy early-to-mid L dwarf, it is overluminous in the mid-infrared compared to the field L/T dwarf sequence. Few substellar/planet-mass objects -- i.e. $κ$ And b and 1RXJ 1609B -- match $β$ Pic b's $JHK_{s}L^\prime$ photometry, and its 3.1 $μm$ and 5 $μm$ photometry are …
Our objective is to estimate the C/O ratio in the atmosphere of beta Pictoris b and obtain an estimate of the dynamical mass of the planet, as well as to refine its orbital parameters using high-precision astrometry. We used the GRAVITY instrument with the four 8.2 m telescopes of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer to obtain K-band spectro-interferometric data on $β$ Pic b. We extracted a medium resolution (R=500) K-band spectrum of the planet and a high-precision astrometric position. We estimated the planetary C/O ratio using two different approaches (forward modeling and free retrieval…
We present Hubble Space Telescope STIS far-UV spectra of the edge-on disk around 49 Ceti, one of the very few debris disks showing sub-mm CO emission. Many atomic absorption lines are present in the spectra, most of which arise from circumstellar gas lying along the line-of-sight to the central star. We determined the line-of-sight CI column density, estimated the total carbon column density, and set limits on the OI column density. Surprisingly, no line-of-sight CO absorption was seen. We discuss possible explanations for this non-detection, and present preliminary estimates of the carbon abu…
Using VLT/SPHERE near-infrared dual-band imaging and integral field spectroscopy we discovered an edge-on debris disk around the 17\,Myr old A-type member of the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association HD 110058. The edge-on disk can be traced to about 0.6" or 65 AU projected separation. In its northern and southern wings, the disk shows at all wavelengths two prominent, bright and symmetrically placed knots at 0.3" or 32 AU from the star. We interpret these knots as a ring of planetesimals whose collisions may produce most of the dust observed in the disk. We find no evidence for a bow in the disk,…
We aim at resolving the circumstellar environment around beta Pic in the near-infrared in order to study the inner planetary system (< 200 mas, i.e., ~4 AU). Precise interferometric fringe visibility measurements were obtained over seven spectral channels dispersed across the H band with the four-telescope VLTI/PIONIER interferometer. Thorough analysis of interferometric data was performed to measure the stellar angular diameter and to search for circumstellar material. We detected near-infrared circumstellar emission around beta Pic that accounts for 1.37% +/- 0.16% of the near-infrared stell…
We characterize the first 40 Myr of evolution of circumstellar disks through a unified study of the infrared properties of members of young clusters and associations with ages from 2 Myr up to ~ 40 Myr: NGC 1333, NGC 1960, NGC 2232, NGC 2244, NGC 2362, NGC 2547, IC 348, IC 2395, IC 4665, Chamaeleon I, Orion OB1a and OB1b, Taurus, the \b{eta} Pictoris Moving Group, \r{ho} Ophiuchi, and the associations of Argus, Carina, Columba, Scorpius-Centaurus, and Tucana-Horologium. Our work features: 1.) a filtering technique to flag noisy backgrounds, 2.) a method based on the probability distribution of…
Some planetary systems harbour debris disks containing planetesimals such as asteroids and comets. Collisions between such bodies produce small dust particles, the spectral features of which reveal their composition and, hence, that of their parent bodies. A measurement of the composition of olivine crystals has been done for the protoplanetary disk HD100546 and for olivine crystals in the warm inner parts of planetary systems. The latter compares well with the iron-rich olivine in asteroids (x<0.29). In the cold outskirts of the Beta Pictoris system, an analogue to the young Solar System, oli…
We present optical and near-IR spectroscopic observations of the luminous blue variable SN 2009ip during its remarkable photometric evolution of 2012. The spectra sample three key points in the SN 2009ip lightcurve, corresponding to its initial brightening in August (2012-A) and its dramatic rebrightening in early October (2012-B). Based on line fluxes and velocities measured in our spectra, we find a surprisingly low I(H-alpha)/I(H-beta) ~ 1.3-1.4 in the 2012-B spectra. Such a ratio implies either a rare Case B recombination scenario where H-alpha, but not H-beta, is optically thick, or an ex…
beta Lyr A is a complex binary system with an extensive observational dataset: light curves (from FUV to FIR), interferometric squared visibility, closure phase, triple product measurements, spectral-energy distribution (SED), high-resolution spectroscopy, differential visibility amplitude, and also differential phase. In particular, we use spectra from Ondrejov 2m telescope from 2013 to 2015, to measure the emission in Halpha, HeI, SiII, NeI, or CII lines, and differential interferometry by CHARA/VEGA from the 2013 campaign to measure wavelength-dependent sizes across Halpha and HeI 6678. Thi…
Context. We detected in 2009 a giant, close-by planet orbiting β Pic, a young star surrounded with a disk, extensively studied for more than 20 years. We showed that if located on an inclined orbit, the planet could explain several peculiarities of β Pictoris system. However, the available data did not permit to measure the inclination of β Pic b with respect to the disk, and in particular to establish in which component of the disk - the main, extended disk or the inner inclined component/disk-, the planet was located. Comparison between the observed planet position and the disk orientation m…
Context. HD 172555 is a young A7 star belonging to the Beta Pictoris Moving Group that harbours a debris disc. The Spitzer IRS spectrum of the source showed mid-IR features such as silicates and glassy silica species, indicating the presence of a warm dust component with small grains, which places HD 172555 among the small group of debris discs with such properties. The IRS spectrum also shows a possible emission of SiO gas. Aims. We aim to study the dust distribution in the circumstellar disc of HD 172555 and to asses the presence of gas in the debris disc. Methods. As part of the GASPS Open …
