The availability of asteroseismic constraints for a large number of red giants with CoRoT and in the near future with Kepler, paves the way for detailed studies of populations of galactic-disk red giants. We investigate which information on the observed population can be recovered by the distribution of the observed seismic constraints: the frequency of maximum power of solar-like oscillations ($ν_{max}$) and the large frequency separation ($Δν$). We use the distribution of $ν_{max}$ and of $Δν$ observed by CoRoT in nearly 800 red giants in the first long observational run, as a tool to investigate the properties of galactic red-giant stars through the comparison with simulated distributions based on synthetic stellar populations.
We can clearly identify the bulk of the red giants observed by CoRoT as red-clump stars, i.e. post-flash core-He-burning stars. The distribution of $ν_{max}$ and of $Δν$ give us access to the distribution of the stellar radius and mass, and thus represent a most promising probe of the age and star formation rate of the disk, and of the mass-loss rate during the red-giant branch.
This approach will be of great utility also in the interpretation of forthcoming surveys of variability of red giants with CoRoT and Kepler. In particular, an asteroseismic mass estimate of clump stars in the old-open clusters observed by Kepler, would represent a most valuable observational test of the poorly known mass-loss rate on the giant branch, and of its dependence on metallicity.
We give here the Table of Contents and clickable links to papers of the proceedings from the workshop "Asteroseismology of Stellar Populations in the Milky Way", held in Sesto, 22-26 July 2013. The aim of this workshop was to foster collaborations and discussions between expert researchers in Galactic evolution, specialists in stellar structure and asteroseismology, and key representatives of extensive ground-based spectroscopic surveys such as APOGEE and the ESO-Gaia Spectroscopic Survey. The workshop was devoted to discussing first results achieved by combining spectroscopic and seismic cons…
For $δ$ Scuti star CoRoT 102749568, 52 independent frequencies were obtained by Papar$\acute{o}$ et al. 2013. We find that there are 4 multiplets and 8 doublets with nearly equal split caused by rotation. Differential rotation is suggested instead of rigid body rotation to explain the equal split phenomenon. Grids of models are computed with MESA to fit observational frequencies of CoRoT 102749568. After rejecting modes of $m\neq0$ in multiplets and doublets, we identify 31 modes of $m = 0$ and 3 modes of $m\neq0$, including 4 modes of $l = 0$, 9 modes of $l=1$, 11 modes of $l=2$, and 10 modes…
Nowadays large spectroscopic surveys, like the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES), provide unique stellar databases for better investigating the formation and evolution of our Galaxy. Great attention must be paid to the accuracy of the basic stellar properties derived: large uncertainties in stellar parameters lead to large uncertainties in abundances, distances and ages. Asteroseismology has a key role in this context: when seismic information is combined with information derived from spectroscopic analysis, highly precise constraints on distances, masses, extinction and ages of Red Giants can be obtained…
New insights on stellar evolution and stellar interior physics are being made possible by asteroseismology, the study of stars by the observation of their natural, resonant oscillations. Asteroseismology is making significant contributions to our understanding of solar-type stars, in great part due to the exquisite data that have been made available by NASA's Kepler space telescope. Of particular interest is the synergy between asteroseismology and exoplanetary science. Herein I will review recent contributions from asteroseismology to the determination of fundamental properties of Kepler exop…
Based on regularities in rotational splittings, we seek possible multiplets for the observed frequencies of CoRoT 102749568. Twenty-one sets of multiplets are identified, including four sets of multiplets with $l=1$, nine sets of multiplets with $l=2$, and eight sets of multiplets with $l=3$. In particular, there are three complete triplets ($f_{10}$, $f_{12}$, $f_{14}$), ($f_{31}$, $f_{34}$, $f_{35}$), and ($f_{41}$, $f_{43}$, $f_{44}$). The rotational period of CoRoT 102749568 is estimated to be $1.34^{+0.04}_{-0.05}$ days. When doing model fittings, three $l=1$ modes ($f_{12}$, $f_{34}$, an…
We computed a grid of theoretical models to fit the $δ$ Scuti frequencies of CoRoT 100866999 detected earlier from the CoRoT timeserials. The pulsating primary star is determined to be a main sequence star with a rotation period of $4.1^{+0.6}_{-0.5}$ days, rotating slower than the orbital motion. The fundamental parameters of the primary star are determined to be $M$ = $1.71^{+0.13}_{-0.04}$ $M_{\odot}$, $Z=0.012^{+0.004}_{-0.000}$, $f_{\rm ov}$ = $0.02^{+0.00}_{-0.02}$, $T_{\rm eff}$ = $8024^{+249}_{-297}$ K, $L$ = $11.898^{+2.156}_{-1.847}$ $L_{\odot}$, $\log g$ = $4.166^{+0.013}_{-0.002}$,…
The high precision data obtained by the {\it Kepler} satellite allows us to detect hybrid type pulsator candidates more accurately than the data obtained by ground-based observations. In this study, we present preliminary results on the new analysis of the {\it Kepler} light curve and high resolution spectroscopic observations of pulsating Am star KIC\,9204718. Our tentative analysis therefore show that the star has hybrid pulsational characteristics.
Early attempts to apply asteroseismology to study the Galaxy have already shown unexpected discrepancies for the mass distribution of stars between the Galactic models and the data; a result that is still unexplained. Here, we revisit the analysis of the asteroseismic sample of dwarf and subgiant stars observed by Kepler and investigate in detail the possible causes for the reported discrepancy. We investigate two models of the Milky Way based on stellar population synthesis, Galaxia and TRILEGAL. In agreement with previous results, we find that TRILEGAL predicts more massive stars compared to…
Space asteroseismology reveals that stellar structure and evolution models of intermediate- and high-mass stars are in need of improvement in terms of angular momentum and chemical element transport. We aim to probe the interior structure of a hot massive star in the core-hydrogen burning phase of its evolution. We analyse CoRoT space photometry, Gaia DR2 space astrometry, and high-resolution high signal-to-noise HERMES and HARPS time-series spectroscopy of the slowly rotating B2V star HD 170580. From the time-series spectroscopy we derive $vsini=4\pm 2\,$km\,s$^{-1}$, where the uncertainty re…
Context. The availability of asteroseismic constraints for a large sample of red giant stars from the CoRoT and Kepler missions paves the way for various statistical studies of the seismic properties of stellar populations. Aims. We use the first detailed spectroscopic study of 19 CoRoT red-giant stars (Morel et al 2014) to compare theoretical stellar evolution models to observations of the open cluster NGC 6633 and field stars. Methods. In order to explore the effects of rotation-induced mixing and thermohaline instability, we compare surface abundances of carbon isotopic ratio and lithium wi…
Since the detection of non-radial solar-like oscillation modes in red giants with the CoRoT satellite, the interest in the asteroseismic properties of red giants and the link with their global properties and internal structure is increasing. Moreover, more and more precise data are being collected with the space-based telescopes CoRoT and {\it Kepler}. Particularly relevant has been the detection of mixed modes in a large number of G-K red giants. In this contribution we discuss the potential of these dipole mixed modes to provide information on core extra-mixing and transport of angular momen…
Asteroseismology is a powerful way of determining stellar parameters and properties of stars like the Sun. However, main-sequence F-type stars exhibit short mode lifetimes relative to their oscillation frequency, resulting in overlapping radial and quadrupole modes. The goal of this paper is to use the blended modes for asteroseismology in place of the individual separable modes. We used a peak-bagging method to measure the centroids of radial-quadrupole pairs for 66 stars from the \textit{Kepler} LEGACY sample, as well as θ Cyg, HD 49933, HD 181420, and Procyon. We used the relative quadrupol…
The results of our six year systematic observational survey on candidate eclipsing binaries with a delta Sct component are briefly presented. A new catalogue for this kind of systems as well as the properties of their delta Sct members are also presented. The comparison between the components-pulsators and the single delta Sct stars shows that both the evolution and the pulsating properties differ significantly. Finally, we introduce the new era of studying stellar pulsations using high accuracy data from Kepler mission and emphasizing the great opportunities that are now opened for a deep kno…
We have developed a new automated method intended to perform the simultaneous - and thus more consistent - measurement of both the seismic indices characterizing the oscillations and the parameters characterizing the granulation signature of red-giant stars. This method, called MLEUP, takes advantage of the Maximum Likelihood Estimate (MLE) algorithm combined with the parametrized representation of red giant pulsation spectra following the Universal Pattern (UP). Its performances have been tested on Monte Carlo simulations for observation conditions representative of CoRoT and Kepler data. The…
Continuous high-precision photometry of stars, provided by space missions such as CoRoT, Kepler, and K2, represents a unique way to study stellar rotation and magnetism. The coupling of these studies of the surface dynamics with asteroseismology is changing our view to surface and internal dynamics. In this proceedings I will provide the latest developments in the understanding of surface and internal rotation and magnetic fields. I will also discuss the possible discovery of strong internal magnetic fields of dynamo origin in the convective cores of stars above 1.2-1.4 solar masses. I will fi…
The CoRoT and Kepler satellites were the first space platforms designed to perform high-precision photometry for a large number of stars. Multiple systems display a wide variety of photometric variability, making them natural benefactors of these missions. I review the work arising from CoRoT and Kepler observations of multiple systems, with particular emphasis on eclipsing binaries containing giant stars, pulsators, triple eclipses and/or low-mass stars. Many more results remain untapped in the data archives of these missions, and the future holds the promise of K2, TESS and PLATO.
What asteroseismology can do for exoplanets: Kepler-410A b is a Small Neptune around a bright star, in an eccentric orbit consistent with low obliquity
The open clusters in the Kepler and CoRoT fields potentially provide tight constraints for tests of stellar models and observational methods because they allow a combination of complementary methods. We are in the process of identi- fying and measuring parameters for detached eclipsing binaries (dEBs) in the open clusters in the Kepler and CoRoT fields. We make use of measurements of dEBs in the clusters to test the accuracy of asteroseismic scaling relations for mass. We are able to provide strong indications that the asteroseismic scaling relations over- estimate the stellar mass, but we are…
With the advent of the space missions CoRoT and Kepler, it has become feasible to determine precise asteroseismic masses and ages for large samples of red-giant stars. In this paper, we present the CoRoGEE dataset -- obtained from CoRoT lightcurves for 606 red giant stars in two fields of the Galactic disc which have been co-observed for an ancillary project of APOGEE. We have used the Bayesian parameter estimation code PARAM to calculate distances, extinctions, masses, and ages for these stars in a homogeneous analysis, resulting in relative statistical uncertainties of $\sim2\%$ in distance,…
We present a comparison of parallaxes and radii from asteroseismology and Gaia DR1 (TGAS) for 2200 Kepler stars spanning from the main sequence to the red giant branch. We show that previously identified offsets between TGAS parallaxes and distances derived from asteroseismology and eclipsing binaries have likely been overestimated for parallaxes <~ 5-10 mas (~ 90-98% of the TGAS sample). The observed differences in our sample can furthermore be partially compensated by adopting a hotter Teff scale (such as the infrared flux method) instead of spectroscopic temperatures for dwarfs and subgiant…
We perform a search for rapidly oscillating Ap stars in the Kepler long-cadence data, where true oscillations above the Nyquist limit of 283.21 μHz can be reliably distinguished from aliases as a consequence of the barycentric time corrections applied to the Kepler data. We find evidence for rapid oscillations in six stars: KIC 6631188, KIC 7018170, KIC 10685175, KIC 11031749, KIC 11296437 and KIC 11409673, and identify each star as chemically peculiar through either pre-existing classifications or spectroscopic measurements. For each star, we identify the principal pulsation mode, and are abl…
Hybrid $δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Doradus pulsating stars show acoustic ($p$) oscillation modes typical of $δ$ Scuti variable stars, and gravity ($g$) pulsation modes characteristic of $γ$ Doradus variable stars simultaneously excited. Observations from space missions like MOST, CoRoT, and \emph{Kepler} have revealed a large number of hybrid $δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Doradus pulsators, thus paving the way for a exciting new channel for asteroseismic studies. We perform a detailed asteroseismological modeling of five hybrid $δ$ Scuti-$γ$ Doradus stars. We employ a grid-based modeling approach to sound the internal stru…
In the context of CoRoT, Kepler, Gaia, TESS, and PLATO, precise and accurate stellar ages, masses and radii are of paramount importance. They are crucial to constrain scenarii of planetary formation and evolution. We aim at quantifying how detailed stellar modeling improves the accuracy and precision on age and mass of individual stars. We adopt a multifaceted approach where we examine how the number of observational constraints as well as the uncertainties on observations and on model input physics impact the age-dating and weighing. We modelled the exoplanet host-star HD52265, a MS, solar-lik…
The presence of mixed modes makes subgiants excellent targets for asteroseismology, providing a probe for the internal structure of stars. Here we study 36 \emph{Kepler} subgiants with solar-like oscillations and report their oscillation mode parameters. We performed a so-called peakbagging exercise, i.e. estimating oscillation mode frequencies, linewidths, and amplitudes with a power spectrum model, fitted in the Bayesian framework and sampled with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm. The uncertainties of the mode frequencies have a median value of 0.180 $μ$Hz. We obtained seismic parameters…
Detailed modelling of stellar oscillations is able to give precise estimates for stellar ages, but the inferred results typically depend on the adopted model parameters used for the age inference. High-quality asteroseismic data with precise measurements of mixed modes are available for 36 Kepler subgiants. To obtain a handle on the robustness of the ages for these stars, we first study the dependencies of seismic ages on three model input parameters. We find that inferred ages do not change systematically with the helium fraction (Y) or the mixing-length parameter but depend strongly on the m…

Asteroseismology is witnessing a revolution thanks to high-precise asteroseismic space data (MOST, CoRoT, Kepler, BRITE), and their large ground-based follow-up programs. Those instruments have provided an unprecedented large amount of information, which allows us to scrutinize its statistical properties in the quest for hidden relations among pulsational and/or physical observables. This approach might be particularly useful for stars whose pulsation content is difficult to interpret. This is the case of intermediate-mass classical pulsating stars (i.e. gamma Dor, delta Scuti, hybrids) for wh…
Deep learning in the form of 1D convolutional neural networks have previously been shown to be capable of efficiently classifying the evolutionary state of oscillating red giants into red giant branch stars and helium-core burning stars by recognizing visual features in their asteroseismic frequency spectra. We elaborate further on the deep learning method by developing an improved convolutional neural network classifier. To make our method useful for current and future space missions such as K2, TESS and PLATO, we train classifiers that are able to classify the evolutionary states of lower fr…
Mass loss by red giants is an important process to understand the final stages of stellar evolution and the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium. Mass-loss rates are thought to be controlled by pulsation-enhanced dust-driven outflows. Here we investigate the relationships between mass loss, pulsations, and radiation, using 3213 luminous Kepler red giants and 135000 ASAS-SN semiregulars and Miras. Mass-loss rates are traced by infrared colours using 2MASS and WISE and by observed-to-model WISE fluxes, and are also estimated using dust mass-loss rates from literature assuming a typical…
With current space-based missions it is now possible to obtain age-sensitive asteroseismic information for tens of thousands of red giants. This provides a promising opportunity to study the Galactic structure and evolution. We use asteroseismic data of red giants, observed by Kepler, to test the current theoretical framework of modelling the Galaxy based on population synthesis modeling and the use of asteroseismic scaling relations for giants. We use the open source code Galaxia to model the Milky Way and find the distribution of the masses predicted by Galaxia to be systematically offset wi…
