A concise and critical review of Balmer-dominated shocks (BDSs) is presented, summarizing the state of theory and observations, including models with/without shock precursors and their synergy with atomic physics. Observations of BDSs in supernova remnants are reviewed on an object-by-object basis. The relevance of BDSs towards understanding the acceleration of cosmic rays in shocks is emphasized. Probable and possible detections of BDSs in astrophysical objects other than supernova remnants, including pulsar wind nebulae and high-redshift galaxies, are described. The case for the continued future of studying BDSs in astrophysics is made, including their relevance towards understanding electron-ion temperature equilibration in collisionless shocks.
We present integral-field spectroscopic observations with the VIMOS-IFU at the VLT of fast (2000-3000 km/s) Balmer-dominated shocks surrounding the northwestern rim of the remnant of supernova 1006. The high spatial and spectral resolution of the instrument enable us to show that the physical characteristics of the shocks exhibit a strong spatial variation over few atomic scale lengths across 133 sky locations. Our results point to the presence of a population of non-thermal protons (10-100 keV) which might well be the seed particles for generating high-energy cosmic rays. We also present obse…
We present wide-field, spatially and highly resolved spectroscopic observations of Balmer filaments in the northeastern rim of Tycho's supernova remnant in order to investigate the signal of cosmic-ray (CR) acceleration. The spectra of Balmer-dominated shocks (BDSs) have characteristic narrow (FWHM $\sim$ 10 kms$^{-1}$) and broad (FWHM $\sim$ 1000 kms$^{-1}$) H$α$ components. CRs affect the H$α$-line parameters: heating the cold neutrals in the interstellar medium results in broadening of the narrow H$α$-line width beyond 20 kms$^{-1}$, but also in reduction of the broad H$α$-line width due to…
We report on the proper motions of Balmer-dominated filaments in Kepler's supernova remnant using high resolution images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope at two epochs separated by about 10 years. We use the improved proper motion measurements and revised values of shock velocities to derive a distance to Kepler of 5.1 [+0.8, -0.7] kpc. The main shock around the northern rim of the remnant has a typical speed of 1690 km/s and is encountering material with densities of about 8 cm^-3. We find evidence for the variation of shock properties over small spatial scales, including differences …

We present Fabry-Pérot interferometric observations of the narrow H$α$ component in the shock front of the historical supernova remnant Tycho (SN 1572). Using GH$α$FaS (Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Pérot Spectrometer) on the William Herschel Telescope, we observed a great portion of the shock front in the northeastern (NE) region of the remnant. The angular resolution of $\sim$1$^{\prime\prime}$ and spectral resolving power of R$\sim$21 000 together with the large field-of-view (3.4$^{\prime}$ $\times$ 3.4$^{\prime}$) of the instrument allow us to measure the narrow H$α$-line width in 73 bins across indi…
Balmer-dominated shells in supernova remnants (SNRs) are produced by collisionless shocks advancing into a partially neutral medium, and are most frequently associated with Type Ia supernovae. We have analyzed Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images and VLT/MUSE or AAT/WiFeS observations of five Type Ia SNRs containing Balmer-dominated shells in the LMC: 0509-67.5, 0519-69.0, N103B, DEM L71, and 0548-70.4. Contrary to expectations, we find bright forbidden line emission from small dense knots embedded in four of these SNRs. The electron densities in some knots are higher than 10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$. The…
The analysis of Balmer-dominated emission in supernova remnants is potentially a very powerful way to derive information on the shock structure, on the physical conditions of the ambient medium and on the cosmic-ray acceleration efficiency. However, the outcome of models developed in plane-parallel geometry is usually not easily comparable with the data, since they often come from regions with rather a complex geometry. We present here a general scheme to disentangle physical and geometrical effects in the data interpretation, which is especially powerful when the transition zone of the shock …
We extract the multiple-epoch Balmer-line profiles of the heavily obscured quasar 3C 445 from the spectral curves in the literature, and analyze the emission-line profiles of the H$α$ and H$β$ lines and the profile variability in the H$α$ line in the large time interval of more than three decades. The profile comparison between the H$α$ and H$β$ lines shows that both Balmer lines share the profile with the same form, while the blue system of the H$β$ line is seriously weaker than that of the H$α$ line. Moreover, the blue system of the H$α$ line suddenly disappeared completely and then did not …
We present H$α$ spectroscopic observations and detailed modelling of the Balmer filaments in the supernova remnant Tycho. We used Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Pérot Spectrometer on the William Herschel Telescope with a 3.4'$\times$3.4' field-of-view, 0.2" pixel scale and $σ_\rm{instr}=8.1$ km/s resolution at 1" seeing for $\sim10$ hours, resulting in 82 spatial-spectral bins that resolve the narrow H$α$ line in the entire Tycho's northeastern rim. For the first time, we can mitigate artificial line broadening from unresolved differential motion, and probe H$α$ emission parameters in varying shock and amb…
We report results of infrared imaging and spectroscopic observations of the SN 1006 remnant, carried out with the Spitzer Space Telescope. The 24 micron image from MIPS clearly shows faint filamentary emission along the northwest rim of the remnant shell, nearly coincident with the Balmer filaments that delineate the present position of the expanding shock. The 24 micron emission traces the Balmer filaments almost perfectly, but lies a few arcsec within, indicating an origin in interstellar dust heated by the shock. Subsequent decline in the IR behind the shock is presumably due largely to gra…
We report the results of an X-ray proper motion measurement for the NW rim of SN1006, carried out by comparing Chandra observations from 2001 and 2012. The NW limb has predominantly thermal X-ray emission, and it is the only location in SN1006 with significant optical emission: a thin, Balmer-dominated filament. For most of the NW rim, the proper motion is about 0.30 arcsec/yr, essentially the same as has been measured from the H-alpha filament. Isolated regions of the NW limb are dominated by nonthermal emission, and here the proper motion is much higher, 0.49 arcsec/yr, close to the value me…
We present HST/WFC3 multiband imagery of N103B, the remnant of a Type Ia supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud, as well as HST/COS ultraviolet spectroscopy of the brightest radiatively shocked region. The images show a wide range of morphology and relative emission-line intensities, from smooth Balmer-line dominated collisionless shocks due to the primary blast wave, to clumpy radiative shock filaments due to secondary shocks in density enhancements. The COS data show strong FUV line emission despite a moderately high extinction along this line of sight. We use the COS data with previous opt…

We report results from a multi-wavelength analysis of the Galactic SNR RCW 86, the proposed remnant of the supernova of 185 A.D. We report new infrared observations from {\it Spitzer} and {\it WISE}, where the entire shell is detected at 24 and 22 $μ$m. We fit the infrared flux ratios with models of collisionally heated ambient dust, finding post-shock gas densities in the non-radiative shocks of 2.4 and 2.0 cm$^{-3}$ in the SW and NW portions of the remnant, respectively. The Balmer-dominated shocks around the periphery of the shell, large amount of iron in the X-ray emitting ejecta, and lack…
Wide-field H-alpha images of the Galactic plane have revealed a new supernova remnant (SNR) nearly three degrees in diameter centred at l = 107.0, b = +9.0. Deep and higher resolution H-alpha and [O III] 5007 Ang images show dozens of H-alpha filaments along the remnant's northern, western, and southwestern limbs, but few [O III] bright filaments. The nebula is well detected in the H-alpha Virginia Tech Spectral-Line Survey images, with many of its brighter filaments even visible on Digital Sky Survey images. Low-dispersion spectra of several filaments show either Balmer dominated, non-radiati…
N103B is a Type Ia supernova remnant (SNR) projected in the outskirt of the superbubble around the rich cluster NGC 1850 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have obtained H$α$ and continuum images of N103B with the $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ ($\textit{HST}$) and high-dispersion spectra with 4m and 1.5m telescopes at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The $\textit{HST}$ H$α$ image exhibits a complex system of nebular knots inside an incomplete filamentary elliptical shell that opens to the east where X-ray and radio emission extends further out. Electron densities of the nebula…
Deep Halpha images of portions of a faint 3 x 4 degree Halpha shell centered at l = 159.6 deg, b = 7.3 deg seen on the Virginia Tech Spectral Line Survey images revealed the presence of several thin emission filaments along its eastern limb. Low-dispersion optical spectra of two of these filaments covering the wavelength range of 4500 - 7500 Angstroms show narrow Halpha line emissions with velocities around -170 +/- 30 km/s. Both the morphology and spectra of these filaments are consistent with a Balmer dominated shock interpretation and we propose these optical filaments indicate that the lar…
