We re-examine the kinematic variable m_T2 and its relatives in the light of recent work by Cheng and Han. Their proof that m_T2 admits an equivalent, but implicit, definition as the `boundary of the region of parent and daughter masses that is kinematically consistent with the event hypothesis' is far-reaching in its consequences. We generalize their result both to simpler cases (m_T, the transverse mass) and to more complex cases (m_TGen). We further note that it is possible to re-cast many existing and unpleasant proofs (e.g. those relating to the existence or properties of "kink" and "crease" structures in m_T2) into almost trivial forms by using the alternative definition. Not only does this allow us to gain better understanding of those existing results, but it also allows us to write down new (and more or less explicit) definitions of (a) the variable that naturally generalizes m_T2 to the case in which the parent or daughter particles are not identical, and (b) the inverses of m_T and m_T2 -- which may be useful if daughter masses are known and bounds on parent masses are required. We note the implications that these results may have for future matrix-element likelihood techniques.
The largest uncertainties in estimating neutrino-nucleus interaction cross sections lie in the incomplete understanding of nuclear effects. A powerful tool to study nuclear effects is Transverse Kinematic Imbalance. This paper presents the first detailed comparison of the predictions of multiple event generators for distributions associated with Transverse Kinematic Imbalance for neutrino interactions on argon. Predictions for muon neutrinos interacting with an argon target are obtained using four standard neutrino event generation tools (GENIE, NuWro, GiBUU and NEUT). Example opportunities fo…
Predictions from widely-used neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators are compared to measurements of transverse kinematic imbalances, made by both the T2K and MINERvA experiments, to allow a joint characterisation of the nuclear physics processes responsible for some of the largest uncertainties in measurements of neutrino oscillations. The role of nucleon-nucleon correlations, initial state nucleon Fermi motion and hadronic re-interactions inside the nuclear medium are explored and areas requiring more theoretical input are identified.
Infrared renormalons in Quantum Chromodynamics are associated with non-perturbative corrections to short distance observables. Linear renormalons, i.e. such that the associated non-perturbative corrections scale like one inverse power of the hard scale, can affect at a non-negligible level even the very high-energy phenomena studied at the Large Hadron Collider. Using an Abelian model, we study the presence of linear renormalons in the transverse momentum distribution of a neutral vector boson $Z$ produced in hadronic collisions. We consider a process where the $Z$ transverse momentum is balan…
We introduce a modified Balitskii-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) equation with the rapidity veto that originates from external kinematic constraint. Though it is a formally sub-leading power contribution, such kinematic effect becomes very important especially in the threshold region, where there is no sufficient phase space for the small $x$ evolution to be fully developed. We also investigate the phenomenological consequences of the kinematic constraint BFKL equation in the forward particle production processes in pp and eA collisions. It is shown that particle yield at large transverse momentu…
Rescattering following a neutrino-nucleus reaction changes the number, energy, and direction of detectable hadrons. In turn, this affects the selection and kinematic distributions of subsamples of neutrino events used for interaction or oscillation analysis. This technical note focuses on three forms of two-body rescattering. Elastic hadron+nucleus scattering primarily changes the direction of the hadron with very little energy transfer. Secondly, a hadron+nucleon quasi-elastic process leads to the knockout of a single struck nucleon, possibly with charge exchange between the two hadrons. Also…

We study transverse momentum dependent factorization and resummation at sub-leading power in Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In these processes the sub-leading power contributions to the cross section enter as a kinematic power correction to the leptonic tensor, and the kinematic, intrinsic, and dynamic sub-leading contributions to the hadronic tensor. By consistently treating the power counting of the interactions, we demonstrate renormalization group consistency. We calculate the anomalous dimensions of the kinematic and intrinsic sub-leading correlation functions at …
Since the $ν_τ(\barν_τ) A_Z \to τ^\mp X$ reaction is notoriously difficult to be directly measured, the information on the dynamics of this nuclear process should be extracted from the analysis of the energy and angular distributions of the tau decay visible products. These distributions depend on the components of the tau-polarization vector. We give, for the first time, the general expression for the outgoing hadron (pion or rho meson) energy and angular differential cross section for the sequential $ν_τA_Z \to τ^-(π^- ν_τ, ρ^-ν_τ) X$ and $\barν_τA_Z \to τ^+(π^+ \barν_τ, ρ^+ \barν_τ) X$ reac…

We present a study of the nuclear-medium induced transverse momentum broadening of particle production in future electron-ion-collision~(EIC) experiments. By considering the multiple scattering between hard partons and cold nuclear medium within the higher-twist factorization framework in perturbative QCD, we calculate the transverse momentum broadening of single hadron production in semi-inclusive measurements, as well as the nuclear enhancement of the transverse momentum imbalance for di-hadron and heavy-meson pair productions. In particular, a kinematics dependent non-perturbative jet trans…
