A Greedy Heuristic for Crossing-Angle Maximization

The crossing angle of a straight-line drawing $Γ$ of a graph $G=(V, E)$ is the smallest angle between two crossing edges in $Γ$. Deciding whether a graph $G$ has a straight-line drawing with a crossing angle of $90^\circ$ is $\mathcal NP$-hard. We propose a simple heuristic to compute a drawing with a large crossing angle. The heuristic greedily selects the best position for a single vertex in a random set of points. Simultaneous Drawing of Planar Graphs with Right-Angle Crossings and Few Bends

Given two planar graphs that are defined on the same set of vertices, a RAC simultaneous drawing is one in which each graph is drawn planar, there are no edge overlaps and the crossings between the two graphs form right angles. Point-set embeddings and large-angle crossings are two areas of graph drawing that independently have received a lot of attention in the past few years. In this paper, we consider problems in the intersection of these two areas. The Straight-Line RAC Drawing Problem is NP-Hard

Recent cognitive experiments have shown that the negative impact of an edge crossing on the human understanding of a graph drawing, tends to be eliminated in the case where the crossing angles are greater than 70 degrees. This motivated the study of RAC drawings, in which every pair of crossing edges intersects at right angle. In this work, we demonstrate a class of graphs with unique RAC combinatorial embedding and we employ members of this class in order to show that it is NP-hard to decide whether a graph admits a straight-line RAC drawing.
