A covariant Hamiltonian description was introduced in the dynamics of charges and electromagnetic interaction. By a canonical transformation this Hamiltonian formalism was transformed to obtain the Dirac generators for any form of relativistic dynamics, as coefficients of a first degree polynomial in the ten translation and rotation velocities of the Poincaré transformation. The Currie's world line conditions were generalized to any form of the dynamics. The explicit relation between the covariant field variables and the more usual 3-dimensional Fourier variables was derived.
A new canonical transformation is found that enables the direct canonical treatment of the conformal factor in general relativity. The resulting formulation significantly simplifies the previously presented conformal geometrodynamics. It provides a further theoretical basis for the conformal approach to loop quantum gravity and offers a generic framework for the conformal analysis of spacetime dynamics.
By using the Gitman-Lyakhovich-Tyutin canonical analysis for higher-order theories a four-dimensional Chern-Simons modification of general relativity is analyzed. The counting of physical degrees of freedom, the symmetries, and the fundamental Dirac brackets are reported. Additionally, we report the complete structure of the constraints and its Dirac algebra is developed.
It is pointed out that the wave equations for any upper-lower one-index twistor fields which take place in the frameworks of the Infeld-van der Waerden γε-formalisms must be formally the same. The only reason for the occurrence of this result seems to be directly related to the fact that the spinor translation of the traditional conformal Killing equation yields twistor equations of the same form. It thus appears that the conventional torsionless devices for keeping track in the γ-formalism of valences of spinor differential configurations turn out not to be useful for sorting out the typical …
Using a covariant and gauge invariant geometric structure constructed on the Witten covariant phase space for Dirac-Nambu-Goto bosonic p-branes propagating in a curved background, we find the canonically conjugate variables, and the relevant commutation relations are considered, as well as, we find the canonical variables for the Gauss-Bonnet topological term in string theory.
We develop a formalism for general relativistic, grand canonical ensembles in space-times with timelike Killing fields. Using that formalism we derive ideal gas laws, and show how they depend on the geometry of the particular space-times. A systematic method for calculating Newtonian limits is given for a class of these space-times, which is illustrated for Kerr space-time. In addition, we prove uniqueness of the infinite volume Gibbs measure, and absence of phase transitions for a class of interaction potentials in anti-de Sitter space-time.
The problem of time in canonical quantum gravity is related to the fact that the canonical description is based on the prior choice of a spacelike foliation, hence making a reference to a spacetime metric. However, the metric is expected to be a dynamical, fluctuating quantity in quantum gravity. We show how this problem can be solved in the histories formulation of general relativity. We implement the 3+1 decomposition using metric-dependent foliations which remain spacelike with respect to all possible Lorentzian metrics. This allows us to find an explicit relation of covariant and canonical…
In this work, two particular orthogonal and conformal decompositions of the 3+1 dimensional Einstein equation and Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism for general relativity are obtained. In order to do these, the 3+1 foliation of the four-dimensional spacetime, the fundamental conformal transformations and the Hamiltonian form of general relativity that leads to the ADM formalism, defined for the conserved quantities of the hypersurfaces of the globally-hyperbolic asymptotically flat spacetimes, are reconstructed. All the calculations up to chapter 7 are just a review. We propose a method in…
Building towards a more covariant approach to canonical classical and quantum gravity we outline an approach to constrained dynamics that de-emphasizes the role of the Hamiltonian phase space and highlights the role of the Lagrangian phase space. We identify a "Lagrangian one-form" to replace the standard symplectic one-form, which we use to construct the canonical constraints and an associated constraint algebra. The method is particularly useful for generally covariant systems and systems with a degenerate canonical symplectic form, such as Einstein Cartan gravity, to which we apply the meth…
It has long been recognized that lattice gauge theory formulations, when applied to general relativity, conflict with the invariance of the theory under diffeomorphisms. Additionally, the traditional lattice field theory approach consists in fixing the gauge in a Euclidean action, which does not appear appropriate for general relativity. We analyze discrete lattice general relativity and develop a canonical formalism that allows to treat constrained theories in Lorentzian signature space-times. The presence of the lattice introduces a ``dynamical gauge'' fixing that makes the quantization of t…
In this paper we develop a fractional Hamiltonian formulation for dynamic systems defined in terms of fractional Caputo derivatives. Expressions for fractional canonical momenta and fractional canonical Hamiltonian are given, and a set of fractional Hamiltonian equations are obtained. Using an example, it is shown that the canonical fractional Hamiltonian and the fractional Euler-Lagrange formulations lead to the same set of equations.
The present thesis aims at an extension of the canonical formalism of Arnowitt, Deser, and Misner from self-gravitating point-masses to objects with spin. This would allow interesting applications, e.g., within the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation. The extension succeeded via an action approach to linear order in the single spins of the objects without restriction to any further approximation. An order-by-order construction within the PN approximation is possible and performed to the formal 3.5PN order as a verification. In principle both approaches are applicable to higher orders in spin. Th…
We present a manifestly Lorentz-covariant description of the phase space of general relativity with the Immirzi parameter. This formulation emerges after solving the second-class constraints arising in the canonical analysis of the Holst action. We show that the new canonical variables give rise to other Lorentz-covariant parametrizations of the phase space via canonical transformations. The resulting form of the first-class constraints in terms of new variables is given. In the time gauge, these variables and the constraints become those found by Barbero.
The covariant canonical formalism is a covariant extension of the traditional canonical formalism of fields. In contrast to the traditional canonical theory, it has a remarkable feature that canonical equations of gauge theories or gravity are not only manifestly Lorentz covariant but also gauge covariant or diffeomorphism covariant. A mathematical peculiarity of the covariant canonical formalism is that its canonical coordinates are differential forms on a manifold. In the present paper, we find a natural Poisson bracket of this new canonical theory, and study symplectic structure behind it. …
We prove that, for any theory defined over a space-time with boundary, the symplectic form derived in the covariant phase space is equivalent to the one derived from the canonical formalism.
The homogeneous canonical formalism of Rund is applied to the second-order Lagrangian model of the self-interacting particle of Bopp. The quasi-classical free spinning particle of Mathisson appears then as a constrained subsystem of the previous system. Differential-geometric mechanisms offered in this work are formulated in a fairy general manner, although revealed here in a particular example of physical meaning.
The present paper engages in a particular attempt to acquire exact analytical eigensolutions of the position-dependent effective mass (PDEM) Schrödinger equation for a variety of squared style trigonometric potentials. The algebraic process entitled as the point canonical transformation (PCT) approach is implemented in the course of study. Certain spatially varying effective mass configurations have been utilized in establishing of the target system. Then, performing the systematic computational procedures enables us to determine not only the possible explicit forms of both discrete energy spe…
A review of some facts concerning classical spacetime geometry is presented together with a description of the most elementary aspects of the two-component spinor formalisms of Infeld and van der Waerden. Special attention is concentrated upon the gauge characterization of the basic geometric objects borne by the formalisms. It is pointed out that spin-affine configurations are most naively defined by carrying out parallel displacements of null world vectors within the framework of the γ-formalism. The standard result that assigns a covariant gauge behaviour to the symmetric parts of any admis…
This is an introduction to the by now fifteen years old research field of canonical quantum general relativity, sometimes called "loop quantum gravity". The term "modern" in the title refers to the fact that the quantum theory is based on formulating classical general relativity as a theory of connections rather than metrics as compared to in original version due to Arnowitt, Deser and Misner. Canonical quantum general relativity is an attempt to define a mathematically rigorous, non-perturbative, background independent theory of Lorentzian quantum gravity in four spacetime dimensions in the c…
The successful background-independent quantization of Loop Quantum Gravity relies on the key observation that classical General Relativity can be cast into the connection-dynamical formalism with the structure group of SU(2). Due to this particular formalism, Loop Quantum Gravity was generally considered as a quantization scheme that applies only to General Relativity. However, we will show that the nonperturbative quantization procedure of Loop Quantum Gravity can be extended to a rather general class of metric theories of gravity, which have received increased attention recently due to motiv…
We present a new evolution system for Einstein's field equations which is based on tetrad fields and conformally compactified hyperboloidal spatial hypersurfaces which reach future null infinity. The boost freedom in the choice of the tetrad is fixed by requiring that its timelike leg be orthogonal to the foliation, which consists of constant mean curvature slices. The rotational freedom in the tetrad is fixed by the 3D Nester gauge. With these conditions, the field equations reduce naturally to a first-order constrained symmetric hyperbolic evolution system which is coupled to elliptic equati…
In the main article [CQG 38 (2021) 055003], a new "canonical" form for the Lewis metrics of the Weyl class has been obtained, depending only on three parameters -- Komar mass and angular momentum per unit length, plus the angle deficit -- corresponding to a coordinate system fixed to the "distant stars" and an everywhere timelike Killing vector field. Such form evinces the local but non-global static character of the spacetime, and striking parallelisms with the electromagnetic analogue. We discuss here its generality, main physical features and important limits (the Levi-Civita static cylinde…
The Low equation is derived in a functional approach to the reduction of the S matrix in the canonical formalism. This establishes the vacuum expectation value of the scattering matrix as the generating functional of non-forward Green functions, without reference to external currents. The method provides an alternate derivation of non-perturbative results of field theory, such as the Low equation, and considerably simplifies their derivation as well as that of the rules of perturbation theory, the LSZ reduction formula, the Dyson-Schwinger equations and crossing symmetry. The approach is emplo…
Magnetized neutron stars constitute a special class of compact objects harbouring gravitational fields that deviate strongly from the Newtonian weak field limit. Moreover strong electromagnetic fields anchored into the star give rise to non-linear corrections to Maxwell equations described by quantum electrodynamics (QED). Electromagnetic fields close to or above the critical value of $\BQ=4.4\times10^9$~T are probably present in some pulsars and for most of the magnetars. To account properly for emission emanating from the neutron star surface like for instance thermal radiation and its polar…
We introduce a formalism of nonlinear canonical transformations for general systems of multiphoton quantum optics. For single-mode systems the transformations depend on a tunable free parameter, the homodyne local oscillator angle; for n-mode systems they depend on n heterodyne mixing angles. The canonical formalism realizes nontrivial mixings of pairs of conjugate quadratures of the electromagnetic field in terms of homodyne variables for single-mode systems; and in terms of heterodyne variables for multimode systems. In the first instance the transformations yield nonquadratic model Hamilton…
