We conjecture that the confinement- deconfinement phase transition in QCD at large number of colors $N$ and $N_f\ll N$ at $T\neq 0$ and $μ\neq 0$ is triggered by the drastic change in $θ$ behavior. The conjecture is motivated by the holographic model of QCD where confinement -deconfinement phase transition indeed happens precisely at $T=T_c$ where $θ$ dependence experiences a sudden change in behavior. The conjecture is also supported by quantum field theory arguments when the instanton calculations (which trigger the $θ$ dependence) are under complete theoretical control for $T>T_c$, suddenly break down immediately below $T<T_c$ with sharp changes in the $θ$ dependence. Finally, the conjecture is supported by a number of numerical lattice results. We employ this conjecture to study confinement -deconfinement phase transition of hot and dense QCD in large $N$ limit by analyzing the $θ$ dependence. We estimate the critical values for $T_c$ and $μ_c$ where the phase transition happens by approaching the critical values from the hot and/or dense regions where the instanton calculations are under complete theoretical control. We also describe some defects of various codimensions within a holographic model of QCD by focusing on their role around the phase transition point.
The entanglement extended Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at zero chemical potential in the presence of an external magnetic field is studied. The effect of the entanglement parametrization is analyzed, in particular, on the pseudocritical transition temperatures and on the thermodynamical properties of the model. The model predicts that the coincidence or not of both chiral and deconfinement transition temperatures, in the presence of an external magnetic field, depends on the entanglement parametrization chosen.
We show that in a hot hadron gas, chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement lead to a strong suppression of dilepton production by pion annihilation in the continuum above the $ρ-ω-ϕ$ peak. The suppression due to deconfinement persists also for annihilation reactions involving heavier mesons.
We first introduce the conceptual basis of critical behaviour in strongly interacting matter, with colour deconfinement as QCD analog of the insulator-conductor transition and chiral symmetry restoration as special case of the associated shift in the mass of the constituents. Next we summarize quark-gluon plasma formation in finite temperature lattice QCD. We consider the underlying symmetries and their spontaneous breaking/restoration in the transition, as well as the resulting changes in thermodynamic behaviour. Finally, we turn to the experimental study of strongly interacting matter by hig…
We obtain the constraints on the ruling parameters of the dense hadronic gas model at the critical temperature and propose the quasiuniversal ratios of the thermodynamic quantities. The possible appearence of thermodynamical instability in such a model is discussed.
We conjecture that the confinement- deconfinement phase transition in QCD at large number of colors N and N_f\ll N at T\neq 0 and μ\neq 0 is triggered by the drastic change in θbehavior. The conjecture is motivated by the holographic model of QCD where confinement -deconfinement phase transition indeed happens precisely at the value of temperature T=T_c where θdependence experiences a sudden change in behavior[1]. The conjecture is also supported by quantum field theory arguments when the instanton calculations (which trigger the θdependence) are under complete theoretical control for T>T_c, s…
We discuss the effect of rapid rotation on the phase diagram of hadronic matter. The energy dispersion relation is shifted by an effective chemical potential induced by rotation. This suggests that rotation should lower the critical temperature of chiral restoration, but it is still controversial how the deconfinement temperature should change as a function of angular velocity. We adopt the hadron resonance gas model as an approach free from fitting parameters. We identify the deconfinement from the thermodynamic behavior and find that rotation decreases the deconfinement temperature. We also …
The interaction potential between a pair of heavy quarks is calculated with resummed perturbation method in Gribov-Zwanziger approach at finite temperature. The resummed loop correction makes the potential complex. While the real part is, as expected, screened and becomes short-ranged in hot medium, the strength of the imaginary part increases with temperature and is comparable with the real part, which is very different from the previous calculation in HTL approach. This means that, both the color screening and Landau damping play important role in the dissociation of heavy flavor hadrons in …
The structure of the phase diagram for strong interactions becomes richer in the presence of a magnetic background, which enters as a new control parameter for the thermodynamics. Motivated by the relevance of this physical setting for current and future high-energy heavy ion collision experiments and for the cosmological QCD transitions, we use the linear sigma model coupled to quarks and to Polyakov loops as an effective theory to investigate how the chiral and the deconfining transitions are affected, and present a general picture for the temperature--magnetic field phase diagram. We comput…
A chiral model is introduced that is based on the parity doublet formulation of chiral symmetry including hyperonic degrees of freedom. The phase structure of the model is determined. Depending on the masses of the chiral partners the transition to the chirally restored phase shows a first-order line with critical endpoints as function of chemical potential and temperature in additional to the standard liquid-gas phase transition of self-bound nuclear matter. We extend the parity doublet model to describe the deconfinement phase transition which is in quantitative agreement with lattice data a…
We present a study of charmonia in hot gluonic plasma, for temperatures upto three times the deconfinement transition temperature Tc. q \bar{q} systems with quark masses close to the charm mass and different spin-parity quantum numbers were studied on very fine isotropic lattices. The analysis of temporal correlators, and spectral functions constructed from them, shows that the J/psi and eta_c survive up to quite high temperatures, with little observable change up to 1.5 Tc, and then gradually weakening and disappearing by 3 Tc. For the scalar and axial vector channels, serious modifications a…
I review recent results obtained within chiral effective models, on the phase structure of hot quark matter in a strong magnetic background. After a brief introduction, I focus on the results obtained within two chiral models improved with the Polyakov loop. The models differ for the content of interactions, but both of them are tuned to reproduce Lattice QCD thermodynamics at zero and imaginary chemical potential. One of them takes into account an explicit Polyakov loop dependence of the coupling; the other one neglects this contribution, but takes into account multi-quark interactions. A com…
In this paper we study the confinement/deconfinement transition in lattice $SU(2)$ QCD at finite quark density and zero temperature. The simulations are performed on an $32^4$ lattice with rooted staggered fermions at a lattice spacing $a = 0.044 \mathrm{~fm}$. This small lattice spacing allowed us to reach very large baryon density (up to quark chemical potential $μ_q > 2000 \mathrm{~MeV}$) avoiding strong lattice artifacts. In the region $μ_q\sim 1000 \mathrm{~MeV}$ we observe for the first time the confinement/deconfinement transition which manifests itself in rising of the Polyakov loop an…
In this talk, I present the status of attempts to analyze the behavior of the so-called spatial 't Hooft loop, which can be taken as an order parameter for the deconfinement phase transition in pure SU(N) gauge theory. While lattice data show a strikingly universal scaling of extracted k-string tensions for various values of k and N, the analytic approach to these observables might need some refinement.
The state of art in studying thermodynamic properties of hot and dense nuclear matter is reviewed with the special emphasis on the confinement-deconfinement transition between hadron matter and quark-gluon plasma. The most popular models used for describing deconfinement are analysed, including statistical bootstrap models, pure phase models, the model of clustered quarks, and the string-flip potential model. Predictions of these models are compared with the lattice numerical simulations. It is concluded that precursor fluctuation effects must be taken into account in order to get a realistic …
Ab initio numerical simulations of the thermodynamics of dense quark matter remain a challenge. Apart from the infamous sign problem, lattice methods have to deal with finite volume and discretization effects as well as with the necessity to introduce sources for symmetry-breaking order parameters. We study these artifacts in the Polyakov-loop-extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, and compare its predictions to existing lattice data for cold and dense two-color matter with two flavors of Wilson quarks. To achieve even qualitative agreement with lattice data requires the introduction of two novel …
The equation of state for the pion gas is analyzed within the third virial approximation. The second virial coefficient is found from the pion-pion- scattering data, while the third one is considered as a free parameter. The proposed model leads to a first-order phase transition from the pion gas to a more dense phase at the temperature T_pt < 136 MeV. Due to relatively low temperature this phase transition cannot be related to the deconfinement. This suggests that a new phase of hadron matter - 'hot pion liquid' - may exist.
We present arguments suggesting that large size overlapping instantons are the driving mechanism of the confinement-deconfinement phase transition at nonzero chemical potential mu. The arguments are based on the picture that instantons at very large chemical potential in the weak coupling regime are localized configurations with finite size ρ\simμ^{-1}. At the same time, the same instantons at smaller chemical potential in the strong coupling regime are well represented by the so-called instanton-quarks with fractional topological charge 1/N_c. We estimate the critical chemical potential mu_c(…
Major aspects of the subhadronic state of nuclear matter populated with deconfined color particles are reviewed. At high and even at rather low nuclear collision energies, this is expected to be a short-term quark-gluon plasma (QGP), but, seemingly, not only this. Emphasis is put on the self-consistency requirement that must be imposed on any phenomenological description of the evolution of a hot and dense nuclear medium as it expands (cools down) to the point where the final scattering of secondary particles starts. The view is argued and analyzed that massive constituent quarks should then p…
We study the propagation of leptons in hot and dense media and estimate the background corrections to the purely leptonic processes in the early universe and in the stellar cores.
One of the confident predictions of QCD is that at sufficiently high temperature and/or density, hadronic matter should undergo a thermodynamic phase transition to a colour deconfined state of matter - popularly called the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). In low energy effective theories of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), one usually talks of the chiral transition for which a well defined order parameter exists. We investigate the dissociation of pions and kaons in a medium of hot quark matter decsribed by the Nambu - Jona Lasinio (NJL) model. The decay widths of pion and kaon are found to be large but…
This talk summarizes some of the theoretical issues currently most debated in the field of hot and dense QCD matter and ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions.
This text is meant as an introduction to the theoretical physics of photon emission in hot and dense strongly interacting matter, the principal application being relativistic nuclear collisions. We shall cover some of the results and techniques appropriate for studies at SPS, RHIC, and LHC energies
The photoproduction rate of pentaquark $Θ^+$ is calculated in a hot and dense medium. At high temperature and density, due to the restoration of chiral symmetry, photoproduction energy threshold is increased. Above the thresold the production cross section is strongly enhanced.
Various thermodynamic quantities and the phase diagram of strongly interacting hot and dense magnetized quark matter are obtained with the $ 2 $-flavour Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with Polyakov loop considering finite values of the anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of the quarks. Susceptibilities associated with constituent quark mass and traced Polyakov loop are used to evaluate chiral and deconfinement transition temperatures. It is found that, inclusion of the AMM of the quarks in presence of the background magnetic field results in a substantial decrease in the chiral as well as deconfinement …
We evaluate thermodynamical quantities and the transport coefficients of a dense and hot hadronic matter based on the event generator URASiMA (Ultra-Relativistic AA collision Simulator based on Multiple Scattering Algorithm) with periodic boundary conditions. As the simplest example of the transport coefficients we investigate the temperature dependence and the chemical potential dependence of the baryon diffusion constant of a dense and hot hadronic matter.
We study the behavior of the $π^0$ width as a function of temperature and density. We provide simple expressions for the neutral pion width in a hot and dense medium based on a renormalized version of the microscopic Nambu Jona Lasinio model. Then we consider the two cases where the pion mass is finite or vanishes at the critical temperature and discuss the phenomenological consequences of both cases.
We investigate the influence of a deconfinement phase transition on the dynamics of hot and dense nuclear matter. We apply a hybrid model where an intermediate hydrodynamics stage is employed for the the hot and dense stage of a system created in head-on collisions of Pb+Pb/Au+Au at beam energies from $2-160A $GeV. The initial and final interactions are performed by a microscopic transport approach (UrQMD). An equation of state that incorporates a critical end point (CEP) in line with lattice data is used. It follows from coupling the Polyakov loop (as an order parameter for deconfinement) to …
We present a relativistic three-body equation to investigate three-quark clusters in hot and dense quark matter. To derive such an equation we use the Dyson equation approach. The equation systematically includes the Pauli blocking factors as well as the self energy corrections of quarks. Special relativity is realized through the light front form. Presently we use a zero-range force and investigate the Mott transition.
We estimate the energy reservoir available in the deconfinement phase transition induced collapse of a neutron star to its hybrid star mass twin on the "third family" branch, using a recent equation of state of dense matter. The available energy corresponding to the mass-energy difference between configurations is comparable with energies of the most violent astrophysical burst processes. An observational outcome of such a dynamical transition might be fast radio bursts, specifically a recent example of a FRB with a double-peak structure in its light curve.
The one-particle electron spectrum is found for hot and dense QED and its properties are investigated in comparison with the collective spectrum. It is shown that the one-particle spectrum (in any case its zero momentum limit) is gauge invariant, but the collective spectrum, being qualitatively different, is always gauge dependent. The exception is the case $m,μ=0$ for which the collective spectrum long wavelength limit demonstrates the gauge invariance as well.
We study the properties of an electromagnetically interacting medium in the presence of high concentration of electrons at extremely high temperatures and chemical potentials. We show that the electromagnetic properties of a medium such as the electric permittivity, magnetic permeability, magnetic moments and the propagation speed of electromagnetic waves as well as the corresponding particle processes depend on temperature and density of the medium. Electromagnetic properties of neutrinos are significantly modified due to their interactions with electrons when they propagate through such a me…
Photons, as quanta of electromagnetic fields, determine the electromagnetic properties of an extremely hot and dense medium. Considering the properties of photons in the interacting medium of charged particles, we explicitly calculate the electromagnetic properties such as the electric permittivity, magnetic permeability, refractive index and the propagation speed of electromagnetic signals in extremely hot and dense background in cosmos. Photons acquire dynamically generated mass in a medium. The screening mass of photon, Debye shielding length and the plasma frequency are calculated as funct…
We generate the statistical ensembles in equilibrium with fixed temperature and chemical potential by imposing periodic boundary condition to the simulation of URASiMA(Ultra-Relativistic AA collision Simulator based on Multiple Scattering Algorithm). By using the generated ensembles, we investigate the temperature dependence and the chemical potential dependence of the nucleon diffusion constant of a dense and hot hadronic matter.
We evaluate charge diffusion constant of dense and hot hadronic matter based on the molecular dynamical method by using a hadronic collision generator which describes nuclear collisions at energies 10 < E < 100 GeV/A and satisfies detailed balance at low temperatures (T < 200 MeV). For the hot and dense hadronic matter of the temperature range, 100 < T < 200 MeV and baryon number density, 0.16 < nB < 0.32 fm^-3, charge diffusion constant D gradually increases from 0.5 fm c to 2 fm c with temperature and is almost independent of baryon number density. Based on the obtained diffusion constant we…
The Fermi excitations in hot and dense quark-gluon plasma are studied in the Feynman gauge using the temperature Green function technique. We find the four well-separated branches for the case $m=0$ and establish the additional splitting between them (the four different masses) when $m\ne 0$. The long wavelength limit of these excitations is found in the general case of the massive fermions at finite temperature and densities to give the exact one-loop spectrum. Simultaneously the many known results are reproduces as its different limits.
Some features of hot and dense gas of quarks which are considered as the quasi-particles of the model Hamiltonian with four-fermion interaction are studied. Being adapted to the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model this approach allows us to accommodate a phase transition similar to the nuclear liquid-gas one at the proper scale. It allows us to argue an existence of the mixed phase of vacuum and baryonic matter (even at zero temperature) as a plausible scenario of chiral symmetry (partial) restoration.
The phase diagram of the quark-gluon matter evolution is presented for the SU(3)-model with a new phase of heavy deconfined quarks which exists in a rather wide range of temperatures and densities. Fitting the chiral phase transition data to fix the model parameters we establish another (deconfinement) phase transition which separates a new phase from hadronic matter. The parameters and properties of the phase diagram are discussed in comparison with lattice and other results.
We investigate the phase structure of hot and/or dense QCD with massless 2-flavors using the Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) with the improved ladder approximation in the Landau gauge. We examine the effect of the antiquark contribution and find that setting the antiquark Majorana mass equal to the quark one is a good approximation in the medium density region. The imaginary part of the Dirac mass has an important influence on the chiral phase transition, in particular on the tricritical point.
The one-loop dispersion equation which defines the collective excitations of the massive Dirac particles in hot and dense quark-gluon medium is obtained in the high temperature limit for the case $m<<T$ and solved explicitly for all $|\q|$ when $μ=0$. Four well-separated spectrum branches (quasi-particle and quasi-hole excitations) are found and their behaviors for the small and large $|\q|$ are investigated. All calculations are performed using the temperature Green function technique and fixing the Feynman gauge. The gauge dependency of the spectra found are briefly discussed.
In the deconfinement phase of QCD quarks and gluons interact with the dense stochastic colour-magnetic vacuum. We consider the dynamics of quarks in this deconfinement phase using the Field Correlators Method and derive an effective nonperturbative inter-quark potential, in addition to the usual perturbative short-ranged interaction. We find the resulting angular-momentum-dependent interaction to be attractive enough to maintain bound states and, for light quarks (and gluons), to cause emission of quark and gluon pairs. Possible consequences for the strong interacting quark--gluon plasma are b…
We present the first complete calculation of the soft photon self-energy to the next-to-leading order in a hot and/or dense ultrarelativistic plasma in Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). The calculation is performed within the real-time formalism utilizing dimensional regularization in $4-2ε$ dimensions, while the result is reported including explicit $O(ε)$ terms in the zero-temperature limit. This information is required to extend the perturbative calculation of the pressure of cold and dense QED matter to partial next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in a weak-coupling expansion, reported in a …
The one-loop Fermi spectra (one-particle and collective ones) are found for all momenta in the $T^2$-approximation and their gauge invariance in hot and dense Abelian and non-Abelian theories is studied. It is shown that the one-particle spectrum, if the calculation accuracy is kept strictly, is gauge invariant for all momenta and has two branches as the bare one. The collective spectrum always has four branches which are gauge dependent including also their $|\q|=0$ limit. The exception is the case $m,μ=0$ for which this spectrum is gauge invariant for all momenta as well.
We propose a prescription to constrain the chiral effective model approach to the QCD phase diagram using the thermal Statistical Model, which is a description consistent with the experimental data at the freeze-out. In the transition region where thermal quantities of hadrons blow up, deconfined quarks and gluons should smoothly take over the degrees of freedom from hadrons in the Statistical Model. We use the Polyakov-loop coupled Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model as an effective description in the quark side. We require that the validity regions of these descriptions should have an overlap o…
Using the standard Green-Kubo formalism, we determine the shear viscosity $η$ of a hot and dense Yukawa-Fermi gas. In particular, we study the effect of particle and plasmino excitations on thermal properties of the fermionic part of the shear viscosity, and explore the effects of thermal corrections to particle masses on bosonic and fermionic shear viscosities, $η_b$ and $η_f$. It turns out that the effects of plasminos on $η_f$ become negligible with increasing (decreasing) temperature (chemical potential).
I offer some computational details and useful and concise formulae to calculate the effective potential for a general abelian supersymmetric model at high temperature and density. It will be shown that such cases are very good candidates for symmetry nonrestoration at high temperature, providing large densities are present.
The infamous sign problem makes it impossible to probe dense (baryon density $μ_B>0$) QCD at temperatures near or below the deconfinement threshold. As a workaround, one can explore QCD-like theories such as two-colour QCD (QC2D) which don't suffer from this sign problem but are qualitively similar to real QCD. Previous studies on smaller lattice volumes have investigated deconfinement and colour superfluid to normal matter transitions. In this study we look at a larger lattice volume $N_s=24$ in an attempt to disentangle finite volume and finite temperature effects. We also fit to a larger nu…
We study SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two flavors of Wilson fermion at non-zero chemical potential mu and low temperature on a 8^3x16 system. We identify three regimes along the mu-axis. For mu<~m_pi/2 the system remains in the vacuum phase, and all physical observables considered remain essentially unchanged. The intermediate regime is characterised by a non-zero diquark condensate and an associated increase in the baryon density, consistent with what is expected for Bose-Einstein condensation of tightly bound diquarks. We also observe screening of the static quark potential here. In the h…
We present recent results on bulk observables and electromagnetic probes obtained using a hybrid approach based on the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics transport model with an intermediate hydrodynamic stage for the description of heavy-ion collisions at AGS, SPS and RHIC energies. After briefly reviewing the main results for particle multiplicities, elliptic flow, transverse momentum and rapidity spectra, we focus on photon and dilepton emission from hot and dense hadronic matter.
Photon and electron spectra in hot and dense QED are found in the high temperature limit for all $|\q|$ using the Feynman gauge and the one-loop self-energy. All spectra are split by the medium and their branches develop the gap (the dynamical mass) at zero momentum. The photon spectrum has two branches (longitudinal and transverse) with the common mass; but electron spectrum is split on four branches which are well-separated for any $|\q|$ including their $|\q|=0$ limits (their effective masses). These masses and the photon thermal mass are calculated explicitly and the different limits of sp…
The behavior of $η$ and $η'$ in hot strange quark matter in weak equilibrium with temperature, is investigated within the SU(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio [NJL] model. Possible manifestations of restoration of symmetries, by temperature or density, in the behavior of $η$ and $η'$ are discussed. The role played by the combined effect of temperature and density in the nature of the phase transition and meson behavior is also analyzed.
We study phase transitions and the behavior of kaons in hot and dense matter, giving special attention to the role of strange quarks. At T=0, it is found that the fraction of the strange valence quarks affects the energy per particle of the system, without changing the nature of the phase transition, and, on the other side, it has meaningful effects on the behavior of kaons and antikaons masses. The phase behavior of kaons in the $T-ρ$ plane is analyzed in connection with the chiral phase transition.
We review recent results on properties of the meson gas relevant for Heavy Ion Collision and Nuclear Matter experiments, within the framework of chiral lagrangians. In particular, we describe the temperature and density evolution of the $σ$ and $ρ$ poles and its connection with chiral symmetry restoration, as well as the chemical nonequilibrated phase and transport coefficients.
A full (3+1)-dimensional calculation using the Lagrangian hydrodynamics is proposed for relativistic nuclear collisions. The calculation enables us to evaluate anisotropic flow of hadronic matter which appears in non-central and/or asymmetrical relativistic nuclear collisions. Applying hydrodynamical calculations to the deformed uranium collisions at AGS energy region, we discuss the nature of space-time structure and particle distributions in detail.
We discuss the chiral phase transition of hot and dense quark matter. We illustrate that the first-order phase transition is generally favored at high baryon density and the repulsive vector-vector interaction weakens the first-order phase transition. We use the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the Polyakov loop coupling for concreteness. We locate the QCD critical surface on the quark mass plane for various values of the vector coupling constant. We find that, with increasing quark chemical potential, the first-order region in the quark mass plane could shrink for sufficiently large vector coup…
We study the neutrino interaction rates in hot matter at high densities in the presence of uniform magnetic field. The neutrino cross-sections involving both the charged current absorption and neutral current scattering reactions on baryons and leptons have been considered. We have in particular considered the interesting case when the magnetic field is strong enough to completely polarise the protons and electrons in supernovae and neutron stars. The opacity in such a situation is considerably modified and the cross-section develops anisotropy. This has implications for phenomenon invoked in …
