We review the half-Skyrmion theory for copper-oxide high-temperature superconductivity. In the theory, doped holes create a half-Skyrmion spin texture which is characterized by a topological charge. The formation of the half-Skyrmion is described in the single hole doped system, and then the half-Skyrmion excitation spectrum is compared with the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results in the undoped system. Multi-half-Skyrmion configurations are studied by numerical simulations. We show that half-Skyrmions carry non-vanishing topological charge density below a critical hole doping concentration \sim 30% even in the absence of antiferromagnetic long-range order. The magnetic structure factor exhibits incommensurate peaks in stripe ordered configurations of half-Skyrmions and anti-half-Skyrmions. The interaction mediated by half-Skyrmions leads to d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductivity. We also describe pseudogap behavior arising from the excitation spectrum of a composite particle of a half-Skyrmion and doped hole.
It was recently suggested that the topology of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene's (MATBG) flat bands could provide a novel mechanism for superconductivity distinct from both weakly-coupled BCS theory and the $d$-wave phenomenology of the high-$T_c$ cuprates. In this work, we examine this possibility using a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of a model which captures the essential features of MATBG's symmetry and topology. Using large scale cylinder-DMRG calculations to obtain the ground state and its excitations as a function of the electron doping, we find clear evidence f…

Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale spin configurations that can be efficiently created and manipulated. They hold great promises for next-generation spintronics applications. In parallel to these developments, the interplay of magnetism, superconductivity and spin-orbit coupling has proved to be a versatile platform for engineering topological superconductivity predicted to host non-abelian excitations, Majorana zero modes. We show that topological superconductivity can be induced by proximitizing magnetic skyrmions and conventional superconductors, without need for additional ingredients. Apart…
We propose an alternative route to stabilize magnetic skyrmion textures which does not require Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya interaction, magnetic anisotropy, or an external Zeeman field. Instead, it solely relies on the emergence of flux in the system's ground state. We discuss scenarios that lead to a nonzero flux, and identify the magnetic skyrmion ground states which become accessible in its presence. Moreover, we explore the chiral superconductors obtained for the surface states of a topological crystalline insulator when two types of magnetic skyrmion crystals coexist with a pairing gap. Our work…
Majorana bound states are zero-energy states predicted to emerge in topological superconductors and intense efforts seeking a definitive proof of their observation are still ongoing. A standard route to realize them involves antagonistic orders: a superconductor in proximity to a ferromagnet. Here we show this issue can be resolved using antiferromagnetic rather than ferromagnetic order. We propose to use a chain of antiferromagnetic skyrmions, in an otherwise collinear antiferromagnet, coupled to a bulk conventional superconductor as a novel platform capable of supporting Majorana bound state…
Planar Josephson junctions provide a versatile platform, alternative to the nanowire-based geometry, for the generation of the Majorana bound states, due to the additional phase tunability of the topological superconductivity. The proximity induction of chiral magnetism and superconductivity in a two-dimensional electron gas showed remarkable promises to manipulate topological superconductivity. Here, we consider a Josephson junction involving a skyrmion crystal and show that the chiral magnetism of the skyrmions can create and control the Majorana bound states without the requirement of an in…
Proximitizing magnetic textures and $s$-wave superconductors is becoming a platform for engineering topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions by the means of exchange processes. However, the consequences of orbital effects have not yet been fully taken into account. In this work, we investigate the magnetic skyrmion texture-induced orbital effects using a Ginzburg-Landau approach and clarify the conditions under which they can induce superconducting vortices. These orbital effects are then included in Bogoliubov-De-Gennes theory containing the exchange interaction, as well as superco…
The review is aimed at highlighting the aspects of topological superconductivity in the absence of spin-orbit interaction in two-dimensional systems with long-range non-collinear spin ordering or magnetic skyrmions. Another purpose is to give a brief introduction to the new concept of topological superconductivity, i.e. higher-order topology in two-dimensional systems including spin-orbit coupled structures. The formation of Majorana modes due to magnetic textures is discussed. The role of effective triplet pairings and odd fermion parity of the ground state wave function in different systems …
Atomic manipulation and interface engineering techniques have provided a novel approach to custom-designing topological superconductors and the ensuing Majorana zero modes, representing a new paradigm for the realization of topological quantum computing and topology-based devices. Magnet-superconductor hybrid (MSH) systems have proven to be experimentally suitable to engineer topological superconductivity through the control of both the complex structure of its magnetic layer and the interface properties of the superconducting surface. Here, we demonstrate that two-dimensional MSH systems cont…
We report experimental coupling of chiral magnetism and superconductivity in [IrFeCoPt]/Nb heterostructures. The stray field of skyrmions with radius ~50nm is sufficient to nucleate antivortices in a 25nm Nb film, with unique signatures in the magnetization, critical current and flux dynamics, corroborated via simulations. We also detect a thermally-tunable Rashba-Edelstein exchange coupling in the isolated skyrmion phase. This realization of a strongly interacting skyrmion-(anti)vortex system opens a path towards controllable topological hybrid materials, unattainable to date.
When quantum flavor Hall insulator phases of itinerant fermions are disordered by strong quantum fluctuations, the condensation of skyrmion textures of order parameter fields can lead to superconductivity. In this work, we address the mechanism of skyrmion condensation by considering the scattering between (2+1)-dimensional, Weyl fermions and hedgehog type tunneling configurations of order parameters that violate the skyrmion-number conservation law. We show the quantized, flavor Hall conductivity ($σ^f_{xy}$) controls the degeneracy of topologically protected, fermion zero-modes, localized on…
We introduce topological phases of matter defined by skyrmions in the ground state spin -- or pseudospin -- expectation value textures in the Brillouin zone, the chiral and helical topological skyrmion phases of matter. These phases are protected by a symmetry present in centrosymmetric superconductors. We consider a tight-binding model for spin-triplet superconductivity in transition metal oxides and find it realizes each of these topological skyrmion phases. The chiral phase is furthermore realized for a parameter set characterizing Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ with spin-triplet superconductivity. We also …
We propose the metallic and weakly dispersive surface states of half-Heusler semimetals as a possible domain for the onset of unconventional surface superconductivity ahead of the bulk transition. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and the random phase approximation (RPA), we analyse the surface band structure of LuPtBi and its propensity towards Cooper pair formation induced by screened electron-electron interactions in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. Over a wide range of model parameters, we find an energetically favoured chiral superconducting condensate featurin…
Recent experiments on twisted bilayer graphene have shown a high-temperature parent state with massless Dirac fermions and broken electronic flavor symmetry; superconductivity and correlated insulators emerge from this parent state at lower temperatures. We propose that the superconducting and correlated insulating orders are connected by Wess-Zumino-Witten terms, so that defects of one order contain quanta of another order and skyrmion fluctuations of the correlated insulator are a "mechanism" for superconductivity. We present a comprehensive listing of plausible low-temperature orders, and t…
We study a minimal Hubbard model for electronically driven superconductivity in a correlated flat mini-band resulting from the superlattice modulation of a twisted graphene multilayer. The valley degree of freedom drastically modifies the nature of thepreferred pairing states, favoring spin triplet $d+id$ order with a valley singlet structure. We identify two candidates in this class, which are both topological superconductors. These states support half-vortices carrying half the usual superconducting flux quantum $hc/(4e)$, and have topologically protected gapless edge states.
The intimate connection between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity is at the core of high-temperature superconductivity. Here, we put forward the projected BCS theory for the unification of antiferromagnetism at half filling and strongly correlated superconductivity at moderate doping. Specifically, it is shown that the projected BCS theory provides excellent trial states for the exact ground states of the $t$-$J$ model in the square lattice, generating the unified phase diagram as a continuous function of hole concentration. Precisely capturing antiferromagnetism at half filling, which …
It is very important to elucidate the mechanism of superconductivity for achieving room temperature superconductivity. This paper is a short review article on the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. In the first half of this paper, we give a brief review on mechanisms of superconductivity in many-electron systems. We believe that high-temperature superconductivity may occur in a system with interaction of large-energy scale. Empirically, this is true for superconductors that have been found so far. In the second half of this paper, we discuss cuprate high-temperature superconducto…
We have studied the half-Heusler compound TbPdBi through resistivity, magnetization, Hall effect and heat capacity measurements. A semimetal behavior is observed in its normal state transport properties, which is characterized by a large negative magnetoresistance below 100 K. Notably, we find the coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in this compound. The superconducting transition appears at 1.7 K, while the antiferromagnetic phase transition takes place at 5.5 K. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ shows an unusual linear temperature dependence, implying unconventional super…
We present a novel route for attaining unconventional superconductivity (SC) in a strongly correlated system without doping. In a simple model of a correlated band insulator (BI) at half-filling we demonstrate, based on a generalization of the projected wavefunctions method, that SC emerges when e-e interactions and the bare band-gap are both much larger than the kinetic energy, provided the system has sufficient frustration against the magnetic order. As the interactions are tuned, SC appears sandwiched between the correlated BI followed by a paramagnetic metal on one side, and a ferrimagneti…
An interplay between pairing and topological orders has been predicted to give rise to superconducting states supporting exotic emergent particles, such as Majorana particles obeying non-Abelian braid statistics. We consider a system of spinless electrons on a Hofstadter lattice with nearest neighbor attractive interaction, and solve the mean-field Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in a self-consistent fashion, leading to gauge invariant solutions that display a rich phase diagram as a function of the chemical potential, magnetic field and the interaction. As the strength of the attractive intera…
Nonunitary superconductivity is a rare and striking phenomenon in which spin up and spin down electrons segregate into two different quantum condensates. Because they support topological excitations, such superconductors are being seriously considered for potential quantum information applications. We report the discovery of nonunitary spin-triplet superconductivity in UTe2, featuring the high transition temperature of 1.6 K and a remarkably large and anisotropic upper critical field exceeding 40 T. In this unusual superconducting state, electrons with parallel spins pair, yet only half of the…
We study a two-dimensional heterostructure comprised of a monolayer of the magnetic insulator chromium triiodide (CrI$_3$) on a superconducting lead (Pb) substrate. Through first-principles computation and a tight-binding model, we demonstrate that charge transfer from the Pb substrate dopes the CrI$_3$ into an effective half-metal, allowing for the onset of a gapless topological superconductivity phase via the proximity effect. This phase, in which there exists a superconducting gap only in part of the Fermi surface, is shown to occur generically in 2D half-metal-superconductor heterostructur…
The half-Heusler compounds YPdBi and TbPdBi, while having similar band structure, exhibit different magnetic properties. YPdBi is a diamagnet, while TbPdBi shows antiferromagnetic order below 5.5 K. Both are superconductors with T${_c}\approx$1 K for YPdBi and T${_c}\approx$1.75 K for TbPdBi. Such a contrast in properties between these two compounds opens a question about the effects of band structure or magnetic correlations on superconductivity. Using the combination of a tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) and a commercial dilution refrigerator, we measured temperature dependent magnetic penetrat…
Signatures of nodal line/point superconductivity have been observed in half-Heusler compounds, such as LnPtBi (Ln = Y, Lu). Topologically non-trivial band structures, as well as topological surface states, has also been confirmed by angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in these compounds. In this work, we present a systematical classification of possible gap functions of bulk states and surface states in half-Heusler compounds and the corresponding topological properties based on the representations of crystalline symmetry group. Different from all the previous studies based on four ban…
