Using a source selection biased towards high mass star forming regions, we used a Large Velocity Gradient (LVG) code to calculate the H2 densities and CS column densities for a sample of Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) 8 micron infrared dark cores. Our average H2 density and CS column density were 1.14 x 10e6 cm-3 and 1.21 x 10e13 cm-2 respectively. In addition, we have calculated the Jeans mass and Virial mass for each core to get a better understanding of their gravitational stability. We found that core masses calculated from observations of N2H+ J = 1-0 and C18O J = 1-0 by Ragan et al. 2006 (Paper 1) were sufficient for collapse, though most regions are likely to form protoclusters. We have explored the star-forming properties of the molecular gas within our sample and find some diversity which extends the range of infrared dark clouds from very the massive clouds that will create large clusters, to clouds that are similar to some of our local counterparts (e.g. Serpens, Ophiuchus).
We present a study on the molecular gas towards a bright-rimmed cloud located to the north of the infrared dust bubble N30. Using the emission from the 12CO, 13CO, and C18O J=3-2 line, together with infrared and radio continuum data, we characterized the bubble and the related molecular cloud. In addition, we show an analysis of the behaviour of the abundance ratio 13CO/C18O towards the bright-rimmed cloud, and we search for clues on recent star-formation.
We have observed the Galactic Center 50km/s molecular cloud (50MC) with ALMA to search for filamentary structures. In the CS J=2-1 emission line channel maps, we succeeded in identifying 27 molecular cloud filaments using the DisPerSE algorithm. This is the first attempt of "filament-finding" in the Galactic Center Region. These molecular cloud filaments strongly suggest that the molecular cloud filaments are also ubiquitous in the molecular clouds of the Galactic Center Region.
In this work, we investigate the observational and algorithmic effects on molecular cloud samples identified from position-position-velocity (PPV) space. By smoothing and cutting off the high quality data of the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) survey, we extract various molecular cloud samples from those altered data with the DBSCAN (density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise) algorithm. Those molecular cloud samples are subsequently used to gauge the significance of sensitivity, angular/velocity resolution, and DBSCAN parameters. Two additional surveys, the FCRAO Ou…
The role played by gravity in the transfer of interstellar matter from molecular cloud scales to protostellar scales is still highly debated. Only detailed studies on the kinematics of large samples of star-forming clouds will settle the issue. We present new IRAM 30m observations of a sample of 27 infrared dark clouds covering a large range of sizes, masses, and aspect ratios. Preliminary results suggest that gravity is regulating the dynamical evolution of these clouds on a couple of parsec scales.
I review massive star formation in our Galaxy, focusing on initial conditions in Infrared Dark Clouds (IRDCs), including the search for massive pre-stellar cores (PSCs), and modeling of later stages of massive protostars, i.e., hot molecular cores (HMCs). I highlight how developments in astrochemistry, coupled with rapidly improving theoretical/computational and observational capabilities are helping to improve our understanding of the complex process of massive star formation.
We study the properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) from a smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation of a portion of a spiral galaxy, modelled at high resolution, with robust representations of the physics of the interstellar medium. We examine the global molecular gas content of clouds, and investigate the effect of using CO or H2 densities to define the GMCs. We find that CO can reliably trace the high-density H2 gas, but misses less dense H2 clouds. We also investigate the effect of using 3D CO densities versus CO emission with an observer's perspective, and find that CO-emission clou…
Optical stellar polarimetry in the Perseus molecular cloud direction is known to show a fully mixed bi-modal distribution of position angles across the cloud (Goodman et al. 1990). We study the Gaia trigonometric distances to each of these stars and reveal that the two components in position angles trace two different dust clouds along the line of sight. One component, which shows a polarization angle of -37.6 deg +/- 35.2 deg and a higher polarization fraction of 2.0 +/- 1.7%, primarily traces the Perseus molecular cloud at a distance of 300 pc. The other component, which shows a polarization…
We present the first systematic study of the density structure of clouds found in a complete sample covering all major molecular clouds in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ; inner $\sim{}200~\rm{}pc$) of the Milky Way. This is made possible by using data from the Galactic Center Molecular Cloud Survey (GCMS), the first study resolving all major molecular clouds in the CMZ at interferometer angular resolution. We find that many CMZ molecular clouds have unusually shallow density gradients compared to regions elsewhere in the Milky Way. This is possibly a consequence of weak gravitational binding …
Purpose of this work is study evolution of magnetized rotating filamentary molecular cloud's. We will consider cylindrical symmetric filamentary molecular clouds at the early stage of evolution. For the first time we consider rotation of filamentary molecular in presence of an axial and azimuthal magnetic field without any assumption of density and magnetic functions. We show that in addition to decreasing of radial collapse velocity, the rotational velocity also affected by magnetic field. Existence of rotation yields to fragment of filament. Moreover, we show that the magnetic field have sig…
Discovery of the Pigtail Molecular Cloud in the Galactic Center
We infer the absolute time dependence of kinematic gas temperature along a proposed orbit of molecular clouds in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Galactic Center (GC). Ammonia gas temperature maps are one of the results of the "Survey of Water and Ammonia in the Galactic Center" (SWAG, PI: J. Ott); the dynamical model of molecular clouds in the CMZ was taken from Kruijssen et al. (2015). We find that gas temperatures increase as a function of time in both regimes before and after the cloud passes pericenter on its orbit in the GC potential. This is consistent with the recent proposal th…
We carried out a molecular line study toward the three Spitzer bubbles S116, S117 and S118 which show active formation of high-mass stars. We found molecular gas consisting of two components with velocity difference of {$\sim 5$ \kms}. One of them, the small cloud, has typical velocity of {$-63$ \kms} \ and the other, the large cloud, has that of $-58$ \kms. The large cloud has a nearly circular intensity depression whose size is similar to the small cloud. We present an interpretation that the cavity was created by a collision between the two clouds and the collision compressed the gas into a…
We report the first evidence for high-mass star formation triggered by collisions of molecular clouds in M33. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, we spatially resolved filamentary structures of giant molecular cloud 37 in M33 using $^{12}$CO($J$ = 2-1), $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1), and C$^{18}$O($J$ = 2-1) line emission at a spatial resolution of $\sim$2 pc. There are two individual molecular clouds with a systematic velocity difference of $\sim$6 km s$^{-1}$. Three continuum sources representing up to $\sim$10 high-mass stars with the spectral types of B0V-O7.5V are embedded with…
We present a large scale survey of CO outflows in the Gem OB1 molecular cloud complex and its surroundings using the Purple Mountain Observatory Delingha 13.7 m telescope. A total of 198 outflow candidates were identified over a large area ($\sim$ 58.5 square degrees), of which 193 are newly detected. Approximately 68% (134/198) are associated with the Gem OB1 molecular cloud complex, including clouds GGMC 1, GGMC 2, BFS 52, GGMC 3 and GGMC 4. Other regions studied are: Local Arm (Local Lynds, West Front), Swallow, Horn, and Remote cloud. Outflow candidates in GGMC 1, BFS 52, and Swallow are m…
We present an analysis of the diffuse ultraviolet (UV) emission near the Taurus Molecular Cloud based on observations made by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). We used a Monte Carlo dust scattering model to show that about half of the scattered flux originates in the molecular cloud with 25% arising in the foreground and 25% behind the cloud. The best-fit albedo of the dust grains is 0.3 but the geometry is such that we could not constrain the phase function asymmetry factor (g).
Molecular clouds are essentially made up of atomic and molecular hydrogen, which in spite of being the simplest molecule in the ISM plays a key role in the chemical evolution of molecular clouds. Since its formation time is very long, the H2 molecules can be transported by the turbulent motions within the cloud toward low density and warm regions, where its enhanced abundance can boost the abundances of molecules with high endothermicities. We present high resolution simulations where we include the evolution of the molecular gas under the effect of the dynamics, and we analyze its impact on t…
Evolution of molecular clouds on galaxy-cloud scale revealed by gravitational network analysis : High-mass clouds may deplete nearby gas via accretion or merging
VISTA observed the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), as part of the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC), for six years (2010-2016). The acquired multi-epoch YJKs images have allowed us to probe the stellar populations to an exceptional level of detail across an unprecedented wide area in the near-infrared. This contribution highlights the most recent VMC results obtained on the SMC focusing, in particular, on the clustering of young stellar populations, on the proper motion of stars in the main body of the galaxy and on the spatial distribution of the star formation history.
The structure of molecular clouds can be characterized with the probability distribution function (PDF) of the mass surface density. In particular, the properties of the distribution can reveal the nature of the turbulence and star formation present inside the molecular cloud. In this paper, we explore how these structural characteristics evolve with time and also how they relate to various cloud properties as measured from a sample of synthetic column density maps of molecular clouds. We find that, as a cloud evolves, the peak of its column density PDF will shift to surface densities below th…
The work of Adamo et al. (2015) showed that the mass distributions of young massive stellar clusters were truncated above a maximum-mass scale in the nearby galaxy M83 and that this truncation mass varies with galactocentric radius. Here, we present a cloud-based analysis of ALMA CO($1\to 0$) observations of M83 to search for such a truncation mass in the molecular cloud population. We identify a population of 873 molecular clouds in M83 that is largely similar to those found in the Milky Way and Local Group galaxies, though clouds in the centre of the galaxy show high surface densities and en…
The origin of the molecular clouds orbiting SgrA* is one of the most debated questions about our Galactic Centre. Here, we present the hydrodynamic simulation of a molecular cloud infalling towards SgrA*, performed with the adaptive-mesh-refinement code RAMSES. Through such simulation, we propose that the circumnuclear disc and the +20 km/s cloud originated from the same tidal disruption episode, occurred less than 1 Myr ago. We also show that recent star formation is to be expected in the +20 km/s cloud, as also suggested by recent observations.
We investigate how the dynamical state of molecular clouds relates to host galaxy environment, and how this impacts the star formation efficiency in the Milky Way and seven nearby galaxies. We compile measurements of molecular cloud and host galaxy properties and determine mass-weighted mean cloud properties for entire galaxies and distinct subregions within. We find molecular clouds to be in ambient pressure-balanced virial equilibrium, where clouds in gas-rich, molecular-dominated, high-pressure regions are close to self-virialization, whereas clouds in gas-poor, atomic-dominated, low-pressu…
We found a molecular cloud connecting from the outer region to the "Galactic Center Mini-spiral (GCMS)" which is a bundle of the ionized gas streams adjacent to Sgr A*. The molecular cloud has a filamentary appearance which is prominent in the CS J=2-1 emission line and is continuously connected with the GCMS. The velocity of the molecular cloud is also continuously connected with that of the ionized gas in the GCMS observed in the H42alpha recombination line. The morphological and kinematic relations suggest that the molecular cloud is falling from the outer region to the vicinity of Sgr A*, …
The abundance of H2 in molecular clouds, relative to the commonly used tracer CO, has only been measured toward a few embedded stars, which may be surrounded by atypical gas. We present observations of near-infrared absorption by H2, CO, and dust toward stars behind molecular clouds, providing a representative sample of these molecules in cold molecular gas, primarily in the Taurus Molecular Cloud. We find N_H2/A_V ~ 1.0x10^21 cm^-2, N_CO/A_V ~ 1.5x10^17 cm^-2 (1.8x10^17 including solid CO), and N_H2/N_CO ~ 6000. The measured N_H2/N_CO ratio is consistent with that toward embedded stars in var…
The determination of absolute and relative distances of molecular clouds along the line-of-sight towards the central molecular zone (CMZ) is crucial to infer its orbital structure, dynamics, and to understand star formation in the clouds. Recent results by Zoccali et al. 2021 suggest that the G0.253 + 0.016 cloud (the Brick) does not belong to the CMZ. This motivated us to cross check their results computing the absolute and relative distance to the Brick and also to other two molecular clouds (the 50 km/s, and the 20 km/s clouds), and discuss their CMZ membership. We used the colour magnitude…
We present new ${ }^{12}$CO(J=1-0) observations of Henize 2-10, a blue compact dwarf galaxy about 8.7 Mpc away, taken with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array. These are the highest spatial and spectral resolution observations, to date, of the molecular gas in this starburst galaxy. We measure a molecular mass of $1.2\times10^8 M_\odot$ in Henize 2-10, and most of the molecular gas is contained within a region having a size of about 310 pc. We use the CPROPS algorithm to identify 119 resolved giant molecular clouds distributed throughout the galaxy, and the molecular gas contained within these …
We performed a search of star-forming sites influenced by external factors, such as SNRs, HII regions, and cloud-cloud collisions, to understand the star-forming activity in the Galactic center region using the NRO Galactic Center Survey in SiO $v=0, J=2-1$, H$^{13}$CO$^+ J=1-0$, and CS $J=1-0$ emission lines obtained by the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. We found a half-shell like feature (HSF) with a high integrated line intensity ratio of $ int T_{ mathrm B}$(SiO $v=0, J=2-1$)$dv$/$ int T_{ mathrm B}$(H$^{13}$CO$^+ J=1-0$)$dv sim6-8$ in the 50 km s$^{-1}$ molecular cloud, which is a most conspicu…
We present a large-scale mapping toward the GEM OB1 association in the galactic anti-center direction. The 9^deg * 6.5^deg area was mapped in 12CO, 13CO, and C18O with 50" angular resolution at 30" sampling. The region was divided into four main components based on spatial distribution and velocity: the Gemini OB1 Giant Molecular Cloud (GGMC) Complex, the Lynds Dark Clouds and the West Front Clouds, the Swallow and Horn, and the Remote Clouds. The GGMC Complex is located in the Perseus arm, while the Lynds Dark Clouds and the West Front Clouds are located in the Local arm. Swallow and Horn are…
Microquasar SS 433 located at the geometric center of radio nebula W50 is a suitable source for investigating the physical process of how galactic jets affect the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). Previous studies have searched for evidence of the interaction between the SS 433 jet and ISM, such as neutral hydrogen gas and molecular clouds; however, it is still unclear which ISM interacts with the jet. We looked for new molecular clouds that possibly interact at the terminal of the SS 433 eastern jet using the Nobeyama 45-m telescope and the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (AST…
Recent large-area, deep CO surveys in the Galactic disk have revealed the formation of ~50 high-mass stars or clusters triggered by cloud-cloud collisions (CCCs). Although the Galactic Center (GC) -- which contains the highest volume density of molecular gas -- is the most favorable place for cloud collisions, systematic studies of CCCs in that region are still untouched. Here we report for the first time evidence of CCCs in the common foot point of molecular loops 1 and 2 in the GC. We have investigated the distribution of molecular gas toward the foot point by using a methodology for identif…
We review star formation in molecular clouds and describe why magnetic fields may be important and how they can influence filamentary structure and the column density probability distribution function (PDF). We also comment on the origin of the stellar and substellar initial mass function (IMF), which may require explanations beyond a simple Jeans length argument in turbulent molecular clouds. A mathematical model of the modified lognormal power-law (MLP) distribution function provides a framework within which to connect accretion processes with the IMF.
Molecular clouds are a fundamental ingredient of galaxies: they are the channels that transform the diffuse gas into stars. The detailed process of how they do it is not completely understood. We review the current knowledge of molecular clouds and their substructure from scales $\sim~$1~kpc down to the filament and core scale. We first review the mechanisms of cloud formation from the warm diffuse interstellar medium down to the cold and dense molecular clouds, the process of molecule formation and the role of the thermal and gravitational instabilities. We also discuss the main physical mech…
We study the physical drivers of slow molecular cloud mergers within a simulation of a Milky Way-like galaxy in the moving-mesh code Arepo, and determine the influence of these mergers on the mass distribution and star formation efficiency of the galactic cloud population. We find that 83 per cent of these mergers occur at a relative velocity below 5 km/s, and are associated with large-scale atomic gas flows, driven primarily by (1) expanding bubbles of hot, ionised gas caused by supernova explosions and (2) galactic rotation. The major effect of these mergers is to aggregate molecular mass in…
We use passive gas tracer particles in an Arepo simulation of a dwarf spiral galaxy to relate the Lagrangian evolution of star-forming gas parcels and their H2 molecules to the evolution of their host giant molecular clouds. We find that the median chemical lifetime of H2 is just 4 Myr, independent of the lifetime of its host molecular cloud, which may vary from 1 to 90 Myr, with a substantial portion of all star formation in the galaxy occurring in relatively long-lived clouds. The rapid ejection of gas from around young massive stars by early stellar feedback is responsible for this short H2…
$Context.$ The traditional approach to characterize the structure of molecular clouds is to map their line emission. $Aims.$ We aim to test and apply a stratified random sampling technique that can characterize the line emission from molecular clouds more efficiently than mapping. $Methods.$ We sampled the molecular emission from the Perseus cloud using the H2 column density as a proxy. We divided the cloud into ten logarithmically spaced column density bins, and we randomly selected ten positions from each bin. The resulting 100 cloud positions were observed with the IRAM 30m telescope, cover…
We present a general parameter study, in which the abundance of interstellar argonium (ArH$^+$) is predicted using a model for the physics and chemistry of diffuse interstellar gas clouds. Results have been obtained as a function of UV radiation field, cosmic-ray ionization rate, and cloud extinction. No single set of cloud parameters provides an acceptable fit to the typical ArH$^+$, OH$^+$ and $\rm H_2O^+$ abundances observed in diffuse clouds within the Galactic disk. Instead, the observed abundances suggest that ArH$^+$ resides primarily in a separate population of small clouds of total vi…
