We present results from a study of proto-globular cluster candidates in the interacting galaxy system Arp 284 (NGC 7714/5) using data from the Hubble Space Telescope. Previous studies of the Antennae and M51 have suggested that the majority of young massive star clusters dissolve within 20 Myr due to mass loss. We use the evolutionary synthesis code Starburst99 to estimate ages and extinctions for approximately 175 clusters visible with HST. We also use lower-resolution GALEX and ground-based H-alpha data to estimate the ages of the giant HII regions in which these clusters are found, and compare the Spitzer colours of these HII regions to those of star forming regions in other interacting systems. The ages are also used to aid in the interpretation of Chandra X-ray data.
Clusters in the tidal tails of NGC 7714 are generally found to have ages less than 20 Myr, though observational limits make the significance of this result uncertain. Older clusters, though not numerous, have nearly the same spatial distribution within the imaged portion of NGC 7714 as young clusters. The cluster population in the bridge connecting the two galaxies appears to be older, but the data in this part of the system is too limited to draw firm conclusions. The ages of the giant HII regions in NGC 7714 are generally older than those of their constituent clusters, possibly indicating that the young clusters we detect are surrounded by their dispersed predecessors.
Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDG), concentrations of interstellar gas and stars in the tidal features of interacting galaxies, have been the subject of much scrutiny. The `smoking gun' that will prove the TDG hypothesis is the discovery of independent dwarf galaxies that are detached from other galaxies, but have clear tidal histories. As part of a search for TDGs we are using GALEX to conduct a large UV imaging survey of interacting galaxies selected from the Arp Atlas. As part of that study, we present a GALEX UV and SDSS and SARA optical study of the gas-rich interacting galaxy pair Arp 305. The G…
Archival WFC3/UVIS imaging of Arp 299 (NGC 3690E + NGC 3690W) is retrieved to investigate the young massive cluster (YMC) population of this ongoing merger. We extract 2182 cluster candidates, including 1323 high confidence photometric sources. Multiband photometry is matched with Yggdrasil models to estimate the age, mass, and extinction of each cluster. A Schechter fit of the truncated cluster mass function results in a characteristic mass ${\rm M_{*} = 1.6 \times 10^6 M_{\odot}}$. Our results confirm that intensely star-forming galaxies such as Arp 299 host more massive clusters than quiesc…
We present results from our Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI, Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) Halpha, 1m Sampurnanand Telescope (ST) and 1.3m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope (DFOT) deep optical observations of NGC 7805/6 (Arp 112) system to test KUG 2359+311's tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidacy and explore the properties of the interacting system. Our GMRT HI map shows no HI detection associated with KUG 2359+311, nor any HI tail or bridge-like structure connecting KUG 2359+311 to the NGC 7805/6 system. Our HCT Halpha image on the other hand, shows strong detections in KUG 2359+311…
Recent studies have shown that star formation in mergers does not seem to follow the same Schmidt-Kennicutt (KS) relation as in spiral disks, presenting a higher star formation rate (SFR) for a given gas column density. In this paper we study why and how different models of star formation arise. To do so we examine the process of star formation in the interacting system Arp 158 and its tidal debris. We perform an analysis of the properties of specific regions of interest in Arp 158 using observations tracing the atomic and the molecular gas, star formation, the stellar populations as well as o…
We present subarcsecond resolution infrared (IR) imaging and mid-IR spectroscopic observations of the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy NGC 2992, obtained with the Gemini North Telescope and the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS (GTC). The N-band image reveals faint extended emission out to ~3 kpc, and the PAH features detected in the GTC/CanariCam 7.5-13 micron spectrum indicate that the bulk of this extended emission is dust heated by star formation. We also report arcsecond resolution MIR and far-IR imaging of the interacting system Arp 245, taken with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Herschel Space Observatory…
The line and continuum spectra of the merger galaxy Arp 220 are analysed with the aim of investigating the ionizing and heating sources. We refer to radio, optical, infrared and X-ray spectra. The results show that in agreement with other merger galaxies, the optical lines are emitted from gas photoionised by the AGN and heated by the shocks in the extended NLR. The infrared lines are better explained by the emission from gas close to the starburst. The starburst dominates the infrared emission. [OI] and [CI] lines in the far-infrared are formed in the internal region of extended clouds and ar…
Arp 104 is a pair of luminous interacting galaxies consisting of NGC 5216, an elliptical, and NGC 5218, a disturbed disk galaxy and joined by a stellar bridge. We obtained optical imaging to support photometric and color studies of the system. NGC 5216 lies on the red sequence, while the unusual distribution of stellar population properties in combination with intense central star formation in a dusty region result in NGC 5218 being a nearby example of an intermediate color (green valley) system. The stellar bridge has remarkably uniform optical surface brightness, with colors consistent with …
We present mid-infrared (MIR) 8-13micron spectroscopy of the nuclear regions of the interacting galaxy Arp299 (IC694+NGC3690) obtained with CanariCam (CC) on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). The high angular resolution (~0.3-0.6arcsec) of the data allows us to probe nuclear physical scales between 60 and 120pc, which is a factor of 10 improvement over previous MIR spectroscopic observations of this system. The GTC/CC spectroscopy displays evidence of deeply embedded Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) activity in both nuclei. The GTC/CC nuclear spectrum of NGC3690/Arp299-B1 can be explained…
We present the results of Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of the interacting system Arp86 in both neutral atomic hydrogen, HI, and in radio continuum at 240, 606 and 1394 MHz. In addition to HI emission from the two dominant galaxies, NGC7752 and NGC7753, these observations show a complex distribution of HI tails and bridges due to tidal interactions. The regions of highest column density appear related to the recent sites of intense star formation. HI column densities $\sim1-$1.5 $\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ have been detected in the tidal bridge which is bright in Spitzer im…
We have conducted a statistical analysis of the ultra-luminous X-ray point sources (ULXs; L(X) >= 10^39 erg/s) in a sample of galaxies selected from the Arp Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. We find a possible enhancement of a factor of ~2-4 in the number of ULXs per blue luminosity for the strongly interacting subset. Such an enhancement would be expected if ULX production is related to star formation, as interacting galaxies tend to have enhanced star formation rates on average. For most of the Arp galaxies in our sample, the total number of ULXs compared to the far-infrared luminosity is consiste…
We present our new deep optical imaging and long-slit spectroscopy for Arp 220 that is the archetypical ULIRG in the local universe. Our sensitive Ha imaging has newly revealed large-scale, Ha absorption, i.e., post-starburst regions in this merger; one is found in the eastern superbubble and the other is in the two tidal tails that are clearly reveled in our deep optical imaging. The size of Ha absorption region in the eastern bubble is 5 kpc x 7.5 kpc and the observed Ha equivalent widths are ~2 A +- 0.2 A. The sizes of the northern and southern Ha-absorption tidal tails are ~5 kpc x 10 kpc …
In this work we present a search for molecular line emission in the interacting luminous infrared galaxy Arp 157 (NGC 520). We report the detection of 19 different lines, from 12 different molecular species in our 3mm line survey and supporting 2mm and 1mm observations. We investigated the profiles of the detected lines, and find all species show asymmetric emission lines, with profiles that differ systematically as a function of critical density. We derive the physical conditions within the gas reservoir of this system using isotope ratios, an excitation analysis, and rotation diagrams. We su…
We present preliminary results of the long term spectral monitoring of two active galactic nuclei with different broad line shapes: Ark 564 and Arp 102B. Ark 564 is a bright nearby narrow line Syfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy with relatively narrow permitted optical emission lines and a high FeII/H$β$ ratio, while Arp 102B is a nearby broad-line radio galaxy with broad double-peaked Balmer emission lines. The spectra of Ark 564 were observed during 11-year period (1999-2009) and the spectra of Arp 102B in the 12-year period (1998-2009), with SAO 6-m and 1-m telescopes (Russia) and the GHAO 2.1-m telesco…
We present a two-dimensional analysis of the gaseous excitation and kinematics of the inner 2.5 x 1.7 kpc^2 of the LINER/Seyfert 1 galaxy Arp 102B, from optical spectra obtained with the GMOS integral field spectrograph on the Gemini North telescope at a spatial resolution of 250 pc. Emission-line flux maps show the same two-armed nuclear spiral we have discovered in previous observations with the HST-ACS camera. One arm reaches 1 kpc to the east and the other 500 pc to the west, with a 8.4 GHz VLA bent radio jet correlating with the former. The gas density is highest (500 - 900 cm^(-3)) at th…
We present results from a study of proto-globular cluster candidates in the interacting galaxy system Arp 284 (NGC 7714/5). Studies of the Antennae and M51 have suggested that the majority of these star clusters dissolve within 20 Myr due to mass loss. We obtain cluster colors using archival \emph{HST} data, and estimate ages and extinctions for over 150 clusters using evolutionary synthesis models. We find that clusters in NGC 7714 are generally less than 20 Myr old, while the data in the bridge is too limited to allow good estimates for individual clusters. We also examine {H {\sc ii}} regio…
We give a short review of the current results of studying of star formation sites observed beyond the main discs of galaxies in different interacting systems: Arp 270, Arp 194, Arp 305, NGC 4656 and NGC 90. The observations were carried out at the 6-meter telescope BTA in SAO RAS with the SCOPRPIO-2 spectrograph. The properties of star forming islands, their mass, dynamics, chemical abundances, their possible fate and the mechanisms inspiring star formation, appear to be different in different systems.
We construct UV/optical/IR spectral energy distributions for 29 star forming regions in the interacting galaxy Arp 107, using GALEX UV, Sloan Digitized Sky Survey optical, and Spitzer infrared images. In an earlier study utilizing only the Spitzer data, we found a sequence in the mid-infrared colors of star-forming knots along the strong tidal arm in this system. In the current study, we find sequences in the UV/optical colors along the tidal arm that mirror those in the mid-infrared, with blue UV/optical colors found for regions that are red in the mid-infrared, and vice versa. With single-bu…
Galaxy-galaxy interactions are expected to be responsible for triggering massive star formation and possibly accretion onto a supermassive black hole, by providing large amounts of dense molecular gas down to the central kiloparsec region. Several scenarios to drive the gas further down to the central ~100 pc, have been proposed, including the formation of a nuclear disk around the black hole, where massive stars would produce supernovae. Here, we probe the radial distribution of supernovae and supernova remnants in the nuclear regions of the starburst galaxies M82, Arp 299-A, and Arp 220, by …
Throughout the last 20 years 7 supernovae (SNe) have been discovered within Arp 299. One of these is unclassified, leaving 6 core-collapse events; 2 type II, 2 type Ib, a type IIb and one object of indistinct type; Ib/IIb. We analyse the relative numbers of these types, together with their positions with respect to host galaxy properties, to investigate implications for both progenitor characteristics and star formation (SF) properties. Our findings are: 1) the ratio of 'stripped envelope' (SE) events to other type II is higher than that found in the local Universe. 2) All SE SNe are more cent…
We have used high resolution (~2.3") observations of the local (D = 46 Mpc) luminous infrared galaxy Arp 299 to map out the physical properties of the molecular gas which provides the fuel for its extreme star formation activity. The 12CO J=3-2, 12CO J=2-1 and 13CO J=2-1 lines were observed with the Submillimeter Array and the short spacings of the 12CO J=2-1 and J=3-2 observations have been recovered using James Clerk Maxwell Telescope single dish observations. We use the radiative transfer code RADEX to estimate the physical properties (density, column density and temperature) of the differe…
We present results from GMRT HI 21 cm line observations of the interacting galaxy pair Arp 181 (NGC 3212 and NGC 3215) at z =0.032. We find almost all of the detected HI (90%) displaced well beyond the optical disks of the pair with the highest density HI located ~70 kpc west of the pair. An HI bridge extending between the optical pair and the bulk of the HI together with their HI deficiencies provide strong evidence that the interaction between the pair has removed most of their HI to the current projected position. HI to the west of the pair has two approximately equal intensity peaks. The H…
Context: The dusty nuclear regions of luminous infra-red galaxies (LIRGs) are heated by either an intense burst of massive star formation, an active galactic nucleus (AGN), or a combination of both. Disentangling the contribution of each of those putative dust-heating agents is a challenging task, and direct imaging of the innermost few pc can only be accomplished at radio wavelengths, using very high-angular resolution observations. Aims: We observed the nucleus A of the interacting starburst galaxy Arp 299, using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) radio observations at 1.7 and 5.0 GHz.…
For the first time we study the Eastern nucleus in greater detail and search for the more extended emission in the molecular gas in different CO line transitions of the famous ULIRG Arp 220. Furthermore we present a model of the merger in Arp 220 on large scales with the help of the CO data and an optical and near-infrared composite HST image of the prototypical ULIRG. Using the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) we obtained CO(2-1) and (1-0) data at wavelengths of 1 and 3 mm in 1994, 1996, 1997 and 2006 at different beam sizes and spatial resolutions. The simulations of the merger in Arp 2…
The nuclear region of the Luminous Infra-red Galaxy Arp 299-A hosts a recent ($\simeq 10$ Myr), intense burst of massive star formation which is expected to lead to numerous core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe). Previous VLBI observations, carried out with the EVN at 5.0 GHz and with the VLBA at 2.3 and 8.4 GHz, resulted in the detection of a large number of compact, bright, non-thermal sources in a region $\lsim$150 pc in size. We aim at establishing the nature of all non-thermal, compact components in Arp 299-A, as well as estimating its core-collapse supernova rate. We use multi-epoch European …
