The characteristic properties of blazars (rapid variability, strong polarization, high brightness) are widely attributed to a powerful relativistic jet oriented close to our line of sight. Despite the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) being strongly jet-dominated, a "big blue bump" has been recently detected in sources known as flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs). These new data provide a unique opportunity to observationally test coupled jet-disc accretion models in these extreme sources. In particular, as energy and angular momentum can be extracted by a jet magnetically coupled to the accretion disc, the thermal disc emission spectrum may be modified from that predicted by the standard model for disc accretion. We compare the theoretically predicted jet-modified accretion disc spectra against the new observations of the "big blue bump" in FSRQs. We find mass accretion rates that are higher, typically by a factor of two, than predicted by standard accretion disc theory. Furthermore, our results predict that the high redshift blazars PKS 0836+710, PKS 2149-307, B2 0743+25 and PKS 0537-286 may be predominantly powered by a low or moderate spin (a < 0.6) black hole with high mass accretion rates mdot_a ~ 50 - 200 msol/yr, while 3C 273 harbours a rapidly spinning black hole (a = 0.97) with mdot_a ~ 20 msol/yr. We also find that the black hole masses in these high redshift sources must be > 5 * 10^9 msol.
We present a catalog of central engine properties, i.e., black hole mass (mbh) and accretion luminosity (ld), for a sample of 1077 blazars detected with the Fermi~Large Area Telescope. This includes broad emission line systems and blazars whose optical spectra lack emission lines but dominated by the absorption features arising from the host galaxy. The average mbh for the sample is $\langle \log~M_{{\rm BH,all}~msun} \rangle=8.60$ and there are evidences suggesting the association of more massive black holes with absorption line systems. Our results indicate a bi-modality of ld~in Eddington u…
We present multiwavelength light curves and polarimetric data of the Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar 3C 273 over 8 years. The wavelength range of our data set extends from radio to gamma-rays. We found that the optical emission in this source is dominated by the accretion disk during the entire time-frame of study. We additionally find that in contrast with the observed behaviour in other blazars, 3C 273 does not show a correlation between the gamma-ray spectral index and the gamma-ray luminosity. Finally, we identified an anti-correlation between the 15 GHz and V-band light curves for the time-ran…
The BL Lacertae (BL Lac) object OJ 287 is one of the most dynamic blazars across the directly accessible observational windows: spectral, timing, polarization, and imaging. Apart from behaviors considered characteristics of blazars, it exhibits peculiar timing features like quasi-periodicity in optical flux as well as radio-detected knots position and has shown diverse transient spectral features like a new broadband continuum dominated activity phase, Seyfert-like soft-X-ray excess, highly transient iron line absorption feature, a thermal-like continuum-dominated optical phase, large optical …
Recent analysis of blazar variability has revealed a proportionality between the mean flux and the root mean squared (rms) fluctuations about the mean flux. Although such rms-flux relation has been previously observed in the accretion disc/corona variability of X-ray binaries and Seyfert galaxies, and has been extensively modelled, its emergence in the jet light curves of blazars calls for a revised theoretical understanding of this feature. In this work, we analyse the time variability properties of realistic multi-wavelength jet light curves, simulated in the context of a simplified version …
Our understanding of the unification of jetted AGN has evolved greatly as jet samples have increased in size. Here, based on the largest-ever sample of over 2000 well-sampled jet spectral energy distributions, we examine the synchrotron peak frequency -- peak luminosity plane, and find little evidence for the anti-correlation known as the blazar sequence. Instead, we find strong evidence for a dichotomy in jets, between those associated with efficient or `quasar-mode' accretion (strong/type II jets) and those associated with inefficient accretion (weak/type I jets). Type II jets include those …
Constraints on the optical polarization source in the luminous non-blazar quasar 3C 323.1 (PG 1545+210) from the photometric and polarimetric variability
The study of blazar jet has been performed for several decades via the VLBI technique, while its generation and propagation stay unclear. In the present work, we compiled a sample of 407 VLBI detected \textit{Fermi} blazars (VFBs) and studied the correlations between apparent velocity (${\rm log}\,β_{\rm app}$) and jet/accretion disk properties. We found a positive correlation between $γ$-ray luminosity (${\rm log}\,L_{\rm γ}$) and ${\rm log}\,β_{\rm app}$, the correlation suggests that the apparent motion of jet knot is related to the jet power.
Blazar jet structure can be indirectly resolved by analyzing the multiwavelength variability. In this work, we analyze the long-term variability of blazars in radio, optical and X-ray energies with the Gaussian process (GP) method. The multiwavelength variability can be successfully characterized by the damped-random walk (DRW) model. The nonthermal optical characteristic timescales of 38 blazars are statistically consistent with the $γ$-ray characteristic timescales of 22 blazars. For three individuals (3C 273, PKS 1510-089, and BL Lac), the nonthermal optical, X-ray, and $γ$-ray characterist…
Successful observations of the seven predicted bremsstrahlung flares from the unique bright blazar OJ 287 firmly point to the presence of a nanohertz gravitational wave (GW) emitting supermassive black hole (SMBH) binary central engine. We present arguments for the continued monitoring of the source in several electromagnetic windows to firmly establish various details of the SMBH binary central engine description for OJ 287. In this article, we explore what more can be known about this system, particularly with regard to accretion and outflows from its two accretion disks. We mainly concentra…
