In this paper, distributed (or multiterminal) source coding with one distortion criterion and correlated messages is considered. This problem can be also called ``Berger-Yeung problem with correlated messages''. It corresponds to the source coding part of the graph-based framework for transmission of a pair of correlated sources over the multiple-access channel (MAC) where one is lossless and the other is lossy. As a result, the achievable rate-distortion region for this problem is provided. It is an information-theoretic characterization of the rate of exponential growth (as a function of the number of source samples) of the size of the bipartite graphs which can represent a pair of correlated sources with satisfying one distortion criterion. A rigorous proof of the achievability and the converse part is given. It is also shown that there exists functional duality between Berger-Yeung problem with correlated messages and semi-deterministic broadcast channel with correlated messages. This means that the optimal encoder-decoder mappings for one problem become the optimal decoder-encoder mappings for the dual problem. In the duality setup, the correlation structure of the messages in the two dual problems, source distortion measure and channel cost measure are also specified.
For a number of lossy source coding problems it is shown that even if the usual single-letter sum-rate-distortion expressions may become invalid for non-infinite distortion functions, they can be approached, to any desired accuracy, via the usual valid expressions for appropriately truncated finite versions of the distortion functions.
We consider a network coding setting where some of the messages and edges have fixed alphabet sizes, that do not change when we increase the common alphabet size of the rest of the messages and edges. We prove that the problem of deciding whether such network admits a coding scheme is undecidable. This can be considered as a partial solution to the conjecture that network coding (without fixed-size messages/edges) is undecidable. The proof, which makes heavy use of analogies with digital circuits, is essentially constructing a digital circuit of logic gates and flip-flops within a network codi…
We consider the problem of lossy source coding with a mismatched distortion measure. That is, we investigate what distortion guarantees can be made with respect to distortion measure $\tildeρ$, for a source code designed such that it achieves distortion less than $D$ with respect to distortion measure $ρ$. We find a single-letter characterization of this mismatch distortion and study properties of this quantity. These results give insight into the robustness of lossy source coding with respect to modeling errors in the distortion measure. They also provide guidelines on how to choose a good tr…
In this paper, we consider a class of multiterminal source coding problems, each subject to distortion constraints computed using a specific, entropy-based, distortion measure. We provide the achievable rate distortion region for two cases and, in so doing, we demonstrate a relationship between the lossy multiterminal source coding problems with our specific distortion measure and (1) the canonical Slepian-Wolf lossless distributed source coding network, and (2) the Ahlswede-Körner-Wyner source coding with side information problem in which only one of the sources is recovered losslessly.
This letter investigates the role of index coding in the capacity of AWGN broadcast channels with receiver message side information. We first show that index coding is unnecessary where there are two receivers; multiplexing coding and superposition coding are sufficient to achieve the capacity region. We next show that, for more than two receivers, multiplexing coding and superposition coding alone can be suboptimal. We give an example where these two coding schemes alone cannot achieve the capacity region, but adding index coding can. This demonstrates that, in contrast to the two-receiver ca…
In this paper, we study joint network coding and distributed source coding of inter-node dependent messages, with the perspective of compressed sensing. Specifically, the theoretical guarantees for robust $\ell_1$-min recovery of an under-determined set of linear network coded sparse messages are investigated. We discuss the guarantees for $\ell_1$-min decoding of quantized network coded messages, using the proposed local network coding coefficients in \cite{naba}, based on Restricted Isometry Property (RIP) of the resulting measurement matrix. Moreover, the relation between tail probability o…
Short message noisy network coding (SNNC) differs from long message noisy network coding (LNNC) in that one transmits many short messages in blocks rather than using one long message with repetitive encoding. Several properties of SNNC are developed. First, SNNC with backward decoding achieves the same rates as SNNC with offset encoding and sliding window decoding for memoryless networks where each node transmits a multicast message. The rates are the same as LNNC with joint decoding. Second, SNNC enables early decoding if the channel quality happens to be good. This leads to mixed strategies …
In this paper, mathematical bases for non-adaptive joint source network coding of correlated messages in a Bayesian scenario are studied. Specifically, we introduce one-step Quantized Network Coding (QNC), which is a hybrid combination of network coding and packet forwarding for transmission. Motivated by the work on Bayesian compressed sensing, we derive theoretical guarantees on robust recovery in a one-step QNC scenario. Our mathematical derivations for Gaussian messages express the opportunity of distributed compression by using one-step QNC, as a simplified version of QNC scenario. Our si…
Blau and Michaeli recently introduced a novel concept for inverse problems of signal processing, that is, the perception-distortion tradeoff. We introduce their tradeoff into the rate distortion theory of variable-length lossy source coding in information theory, and clarify the tradeoff among information rate, distortion and perception for general information sources. We also discuss the fixed-length coding with average distortion criterion that was missing in the previous letter.
We approach index coding as a special case of rate-distortion with multiple receivers, each with some side information about the source. Specifically, using techniques developed for the rate-distortion problem, we provide two upper bounds and one lower bound on the optimal index coding rate. The upper bounds involve specific choices of the auxiliary random variables in the best existing scheme for the rate-distortion problem. The lower bound is based on a new lower bound for the general rate-distortion problem. The bounds are shown to coincide for a number of (groupcast) index coding instances…
In this paper, we propose a low-complexity, secrecy capacity achieving polar coding scheme for the cognitive interference channel with confidential messages (CICC) under the strong secrecy criterion. Existing polar coding schemes for interference channels rely on the use of polar codes for the multiple access channel, the code construction problem of which can be complicated. We show that the whole secrecy capacity region of the CICC can be achieved by simple point-to-point polar codes due to the cognitivity, and our proposed scheme requires the minimum rate of randomness at the encoder.
A polar coding scheme is proposed for the Wiretap Broadcast Channel with two legitimate receivers and one eavesdropper. We consider a model in which the transmitter wishes to send a private and a confidential message that must be reliably decoded by the receivers, and the confidential message must also be (strongly) secured from the eavesdropper. The coding scheme aims to use the optimal rate of randomness and does not make any assumption regarding the symmetry or degradedness of the channel. This paper extends previous work on polar codes for the wiretap channel by proposing a new chaining co…
We consider the variable-to-fixed length lossy source coding (VFSC) problem. The optimal compression rate of the average length of variable-to-fixed source coding, allowing a non-vanishing probability of excess-distortion $\varepsilon$, is shown to be equal to $(1-\varepsilon)R(D)$, where $R(D)$ is the rate-distortion function of the source. In comparison to the related results of Koga and Yamamoto as well as Kostina, Polyanskiy, and Verdú for fixed-to-variable length source coding, our results demonstrate an interesting feature that variable-to-fixed length source coding has the same first-or…
A new variant of index coding problem termed as Pliable Index Coding Problem (PICOD) is formulated in [S. Brahma, C. Fragouli, "Pliable index coding", IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol. 61, no. 11, pp. 6192-6203, 2015]. In PICOD, we consider a server holding a set of messages and there is a set of clients having a subset of messages with them. Each client is satisfied if it receives any of the message which it doesn't have. We discuss about a class of PICOD where the side information is consecutive. We provide index codes for two extreme cases - for the class where each client gets …
Recent work for single-relay channels shows that quantize-forward (QF) with long-message encoding achieves the same reliable rates as compress-forward (CF) with short-message encoding. It is shown that short-message QF with backward or pipelined (sliding-window) decoding also achieves the same rates. Similarly, for many relays and sources, short-message QF with backward decoding achieves the same rates as long-message QF. Several practical advantages of short-message encoding are pointed out, e.g., reduced delay and simpler modulation. Furthermore, short-message encoding lets relays use decode…
In 1985 Kaspi provided a single-letter characterization of the sum-rate-distortion function for a two-way lossy source coding problem in which two terminals send multiple messages back and forth with the goal of reproducing each other's sources. Yet, the question remained whether more messages can strictly improve the sum-rate-distortion function. Viewing the sum-rate as a functional of the distortions and the joint source distribution and leveraging its convex-geometric properties, we construct an example which shows that two messages can strictly improve the one-message (Wyner-Ziv) rate-dist…
This paper considers the finite-field multi-way relay channel with pairwise message sharing, where multiple users exchange messages through a single relay and where the users may share parts of their source messages (meaning that some message parts are known/common to more than one user). In this paper, we design an optimal functional-decode-forward coding scheme that takes the shared messages into account. More specifically, we design an optimal function for the relay to decode (from the users on the uplink) and forward (back to the users on the downlink). We then show that this proposed func…
Multilevel diversity coding is a classical coding model where multiple mutually independent information messages are encoded, such that different reliability requirements can be afforded to different messages. It is well known that {\em superposition coding}, namely separately encoding the independent messages, is optimal for symmetric multilevel diversity coding (SMDC) (Yeung-Zhang 1999). In the current paper, we consider weakly secure SMDC where security constraints are injected on each individual message, and provide a complete characterization of the conditions under which superposition co…
Shannon proved that if we can transmit bits reliably at rates larger than the rate distortion function $R(D)$, then we can transmit this source to within a distortion $D$. We answer the converse question ``If we can transmit a source to within a distortion $D$, can we transmit bits reliably at rates less than the rate distortion function?'' in the affirmative. This can be viewed as a direct converse of the rate distortion theorem.
We study the index coding problem in the presence of an eavesdropper, where the aim is to communicate without allowing the eavesdropper to learn any single message aside from the messages it may already know as side information. We establish an outer bound on the underlying secure capacity region of the index coding problem, which includes polymatroidal and security constraints, as well as the set of additional decoding constraints for legitimate receivers. We then propose a secure variant of the composite coding scheme, which yields an inner bound on the secure capacity region of the index co…
A coding problem for correlated information sources is investigated. Messages emitted from two correlated sources are jointly encoded, and delivered to two decoders. Each decoder has access to one of the two messages to enable it to reproduce the other message. The rate-distortion function for the coding problem and its interesting properties are clarified.
Short message noisy network coding with rate splitting (SNNC-RS) encoding strategy is presented. It has been shown by Hou and Kramer that mixed cooperative strategies in which relays in favorable positions perform decode-and-forward (DF) and the rest of the relays perform short message noisy network coding (SNNC) can outperform noisy network coding (NNC). Our proposed strategy further improves the rate performance of such mixed SNNC-DF cooperative strategy. In the proposed scheme, superposition coding is incorporated into the SNNC encoding in order to facilitate partial interference cancellati…
This paper presents a one shot analysis of the lossy compression problem under average distortion constraints. We calculate the exact expected distortion of a random code. The result is given as an integral formula using a newly defined functional $\tilde{D}(z,Q_Y)$ where $Q_Y$ is the random coding distribution and $z\in [0,1]$. When we plug in the code distribution as $Q_Y$, this functional produces the average distortion of the code, thus provide a converse result utilizing the same functional. Two alternative formulas are provided for $\tilde{D}(z,Q_Y)$, the first involves a supremum over s…
Minimum energy required to achieve a distortion-noise profile, i.e., a function indicating the maximum allowed distortion value for each channel noise level. In this paper, the minimum energy required to achieve a distortion noise profile is studied for Gaussian sources which are transmitted robustly over Gaussian channels. We provide upper bound for the minimum energy behavior of the staircase profile using our proposed coding scheme. Conversely, utilizing a family of lower bounds originally derived for broadcast channels with power constraints, the minimum required energy is lower bounded fo…
A single-letter lower bound on the sum rate of multiple description coding with tree-structured distortion constraints is established by generalizing Ozarow's celebrated converse argument through the introduction of auxiliary random variables that form a Markov tree. For the quadratic vector Gaussian case, this lower bound is shown to be achievable by an extended version of the El Gamal-Cover scheme, yielding a complete sum-rate characterization.
In contrast to the network coding problem wherein the sinks in a network demand subsets of the source messages, in a network computation problem the sinks demand functions of the source messages. Similarly, in the functional index coding problem, the side information and demands of the clients include disjoint sets of functions of the information messages held by the transmitter instead of disjoint subsets of the messages, as is the case in the conventional index coding problem. It is known that any network coding problem can be transformed into an index coding problem and vice versa. In this …
The problem of characterizing the capacity region for Gaussian broadcast channels with receiver message side information appears difficult and remains open for N >= 3 receivers. This paper proposes a joint network and Gelfand-Pinsker coding method for 3-receiver cases. Using the method, we establish a unified inner bound on the capacity region of 3-receiver Gaussian broadcast channels under general message side information configuration. The achievability proof of the inner bound uses an idea of joint interference cancelation, where interference is canceled by using both dirty-paper coding at …
There are numerous scenarios in source coding where not only the code length but the importance of each value should also be taken into account. Different from the traditional coding theorems, by adding the importance weights for the length of the codes, we define the average cost of the weighted codeword length as an importance-aware measure of the codes. This novel information theoretical measure generalizes the average codeword length by assigning importance weights for each symbol according to users' concerns through focusing on user's selections. With such definitions, coding theorems of …
In this paper, inner and outer bounds on the capacity region of two-user interference channels with two confidential messages have been proposed. By adding secure multiplex coding to the error correction method in [15] which achieves the best achievable capacity region for interference channel up to now, we have shown that the improved secure capacity region compared with [2] now is the whole Han-Kobayashi region. In addition, this construction not only removes the rate loss incurred by adding dummy messages to achieve security, but also change the original weak security condition in [2] to st…
In this paper, we present iterative algorithms that numerically compute the rate-distortion regions of two problems: the two-encoder multiterminal source coding problem and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) problem, both under logarithmic loss distortion measure. With the clear connection of these models with the distributed information bottleneck method, the proposed algorithms may find usefulness in a variety of applications, such as clustering, pattern recognition and learning. We illustrate the efficiency of our algorithms through some numerical examples.
A multiple-descriptions (MD) coding strategy is proposed and an inner bound to the achievable rate-distortion region is derived. The scheme utilizes linear codes. It is shown in two different MD set-ups that the linear coding scheme achieves a larger rate-distortion region than previously known random coding strategies. Furthermore, it is shown via an example that the best known random coding scheme for the set-up can be improved by including additional randomly generated codebooks.
A two-terminal interactive function computation problem with alternating messages is studied within the framework of distributed block source coding theory. For any finite number of messages, a single-letter characterization of the sum-rate-distortion function was established in previous works using standard information-theoretic techniques. This, however, does not provide a satisfactory characterization of the infinite-message limit, which is a new, unexplored dimension for asymptotic-analysis in distributed block source coding involving potentially an infinite number of infinitesimal-rate me…
We consider a source coding problem with a network scenario in mind, and formulate it as a remote vector Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problem under covariance matrix distortions. We define a notion of minimum for two positive-definite matrices based on which we derive an explicit formula for the rate-distortion function (RDF). We then study the special cases and applications of this result. We show that two well-studied source coding problems, i.e. remote vector Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problems with mean-squared error and mutual information constraints are in fact special cases of our results. Finally, we ap…
In the pliable variant of index coding, receivers are allowed to decode any new message not known a priori. Optimal code design for this variant involves identifying each receiver's choice of a new message that minimises the overall transmission rate. This paper proposes a formulation that further relaxes the decoding requirements of pliable index coding by allowing receivers to decode different new messages depending on message realisations. Such relaxation is shown to offer no rate benefit when linear codes are used, but can achieve strictly better rates in general. Scenarios are demonstrate…
We consider the rate distortion problem with side information at the decoder posed and investigated by Wyner and Ziv. The rate distortion function indicating the trade-off between the rate on the data compression and the quality of data obtained at the decoder was determined by Wyner and Ziv. In this paper, we study the error probability of decoding at rates below the rate distortion function. We evaluate the probability of decoding such that the estimation of source outputs by the decoder has a distortion not exceeding a prescribed distortion level. We prove that when the rate of the data com…
We derive the capacity of the binary multi-way relay channel, in which multiple users exchange messages at a common rate through a relay. The capacity is achieved using a novel functional-decode-forward coding strategy. In the functional-decode-forward coding strategy, the relay decodes functions of the users' messages without needing to decode individual messages. The functions to be decoded by the relay are defined such that when the relay broadcasts the functions back to the users, every user is able to decode the messages of all other users.
In this paper, we consider the mismatched rate-distortion problem, in which the encoding is done using a codebook, and the encoder chooses the minimum-distortion codeword according to a mismatched distortion function that differs from the true one. For the case of discrete memoryless sources, we establish achievable rate-distortion bounds using multi-user coding techniques, namely, superposition coding and expurgated parallel coding. We study examples where these attain the matched rate-distortion trade-off but a standard ensemble with independent codewords fails to do so. On the other hand, i…
We consider the classic joint source-channel coding problem of transmitting a memoryless source over a memoryless channel. The focus of this work is on the long-standing open problem of finding the rate of convergence of the smallest attainable expected distortion to its asymptotic value, as a function of blocklength $n$. Our main result is that in general the convergence rate is not faster than $n^{-1/2}$. In particular, we show that for the problem of transmitting i.i.d uniform bits over a binary symmetric channels with Hamming distortion, the smallest attainable distortion (bit error rate) …
We determine the capacity region of the secure multiplex coding with a common message, and evaluate the mutual information and the equivocation rate of a collection of secret messages to the second receiver (eavesdropper), which were not evaluated by Yamamoto et al.
In recent years, network coding has been investigated as a method to obtain improvements in wireless networks. A typical assumption of previous work is that relay nodes performing network coding can decode the messages from sources perfectly. On a simple relay network, we design a scheme to obtain network coding gain even when the relay node cannot perfectly decode its received messages. In our scheme, the operation at the relay node resembles message passing in belief propagation, sending the logarithm likelihood ratio (LLR) of the network coded message to the destination. Simulation results …
We develop a low-complexity polar coding scheme for the discrete memoryless broadcast channel with confidential messages under strong secrecy and randomness constraints. Our scheme extends previous work by using an optimal rate of uniform randomness in the stochastic encoder, and avoiding assumptions regarding the symmetry or degraded nature of the channels. The price paid for these extensions is that the encoder and decoders are required to share a secret seed of negligible size and to increase the block length through chaining. We also highlight a close conceptual connection between the prop…
In this paper, we derive the capacity of the deterministic relay networks with relay messages. We consider a network which consists of five nodes, four of which can only communicate via the fifth one. However, the fifth node is not merely a relay as it may exchange private messages with the other network nodes. First, we develop an upper bound on the capacity region based on the notion of a single sided genie. In the course of the achievability proof, we also derive the deterministic capacity of a 4-user relay network (without private messages at the relay). The capacity achieving schemes use …
The interference channel with degraded message sets (IC-DMS) refers to a communication model in which two senders attempt to communicate with their respective receivers simultaneously through a common medium, and one of the senders has complete and a priori (non-causal) knowledge about the message being transmitted by the other. A coding scheme that collectively has advantages of cooperative coding, collaborative coding, and dirty paper coding, is developed for such a channel. With resorting to this coding scheme, achievable rate regions of the IC-DMS in both discrete memoryless and Gaussian c…
An information-spectrum approach is applied to solve the multiterminal source coding problem for correlated general sources, where sources may be nonstationary and/or nonergodic, and the distortion measure is arbitrary and may be nonadditive. A general formula for the rate-distortion region of the multiterminal source coding problem with the maximum distortion criterion under fixed-length coding is shown in this correspondence.
We consider stability of scheduled multiaccess message communication with random coding and joint maximum-likehood decoding of messages. The framework we consider here models both the random message arrivals and the subsequent reliable communication by suitably combining techniques from queueing theory and information theory. The number of messages that may be scheduled for simultaneous transmission is limited to a given maximum value, and the channels from transmitters to receiver are quasi-static, flat, and have independent fades. Requests for message transmissions are assumed to arrive acco…
The secure multiplex coding (SMC) is a technique to remove rate loss in the coding for wire-tap channels and broadcast channels with confidential messages caused by the inclusion of random bits into transmitted signals. SMC replaces the random bits by other meaningful secret messages, and a collection of secret messages serves as the random bits to hide the rest of messages. In the previous researches, multiple secret messages were assumed to have independent and uniform distributions, which is difficult to be ensured in practice. We remove this restrictive assumption by a generalization of th…
Consider a communication scenario over a noiseless channel where a sender is required to broadcast messages to multiple receivers, each having side information about some messages. In this scenario, the sender can leverage the receivers' side information during the encoding of messages in order to reduce the required transmissions. This type of encoding is called index coding. In this paper, we study index coding with two cooperative senders, each with some subset of messages, and multiple receivers, each requesting one unique message. The index coding in this setup is called two-sender unicas…
We consider lossy source coding when side information affecting the distortion measure may be available at the encoder, decoder, both, or neither. For example, such distortion side information can model reliabilities for noisy measurements, sensor calibration information, or perceptual effects like masking and sensitivity to context. When the distortion side information is statistically independent of the source, we show that in many cases (e.g, for additive or multiplicative distortion side information) there is no penalty for knowing the side information only at the encoder, and there is no …
In index coding, a server broadcasts multiple messages to their respective receivers, each with some side information that can be utilized to reduce the amount of communication from the server. Distributed index coding is an extension of index coding in which the messages are broadcast from multiple servers, each storing different subsets of the messages. In this paper, the optimal tradeoff among the message rates and the server broadcast rates, which is defined formally as the capacity region, is studied for a general distributed index coding problem. Inner and outer bounds on the capacity re…
In this paper, the Interference Network with General Message Sets (IN-GMS) is introduced in which several transmitters send messages to several receivers: Each subset of transmitters transmit an individual message to each subset of receivers. For such a general scenario, an achievability scheme is presented using the random coding. This scheme is systematically built based on the capacity achieving scheme for the Multiple Access Channel (MAC) with common message as well as the best known achievability scheme for the Broadcast Channel (BC) with common message. A graphical illustration of the ra…
We consider the problem of multiple descriptions (MD) source coding and propose new coding strategies involving both unstructured and structured coding layers. Previously, the most general achievable rate-distortion (RD) region for the $l$-descriptions problem was the Combinatorial Message Sharing with Binning (CMSB) region. The CMSB scheme utilizes unstructured quantizers and unstructured binning. In the first part of the paper, we show that this strategy can be improved upon using more general unstructured quantizers and a more general unstructured binning method. In the second part, structu…
This paper characterizes the second-order coding rates for lossy source coding with side information available at both the encoder and the decoder. We first provide non-asymptotic bounds for this problem and then specialize the non-asymptotic bounds for three different scenarios: discrete memoryless sources, Gaussian sources, and Markov sources. We obtain the second-order coding rates for these settings. It is interesting to observe that the second-order coding rate for Gaussian source coding with Gaussian side information available at both the encoder and the decoder is the same as that for G…
We investigate the Wyner-Ziv coding in which the statistics of the principal source is known but the statistics of the channel generating the side-information is unknown except that it is in a certain class. The class consists of channels such that the distortion between the principal source and the side-information is smaller than a threshold, but channels may be neither stationary nor ergodic. In this situation, we define a new rate-distortion function as the minimum rate such that there exists a Wyner-Ziv code that is universal for every channel in the class. Then, we show an upper bound an…
We study the problem of constructing good space-time codes for broadcasting $K$ independent messages over a MIMO network to $L$ users, where each user demands all the messages and already has a subset of messages as side information. As a first attempt, we consider the $2\times 2$ case and propose golden-coded index coding by partitioning the golden codes into $K$ subcodes, one for each message. The proposed scheme is shown to have the property that for any side information configuration, the minimum determinant of the code increases exponentially with the amount of information contained in th…
In the literature there exists analytical expressions for the probability of a receiver decoding a transmitted source message that has been encoded using random linear network coding. In this work, we look into the probability that the receiver will decode at least a fraction of the source message, and present an exact solution to this problem for both non-systematic and systematic network coding. Based on the derived expressions, we investigate the potential of these two implementations of network coding for information-theoretic secure communication and progressive recovery of data.
In this paper, we study the data gathering problem in the context of power grids by using a network of sensors, where the sensed data have inter-node redundancy. Specifically, we propose a new transmission method, calledquantized network coding, which performs linear net-work coding in the field of real numbers, and quantization to accommodate the finite capacity of edges. By using the concepts in compressed sensing literature, we propose to use l1-minimization to decode the quantized network coded packets, especially when the number of received packets at the decoder is less than the size of …
Information leakage to a guessing adversary in index coding is studied, where some messages in the system are sensitive and others are not. The non-sensitive messages can be used by the server like secret keys to mitigate leakage of the sensitive messages to the adversary. We construct a deterministic linear coding scheme, developed from the rank minimization method based on fitting matrices (Bar-Yossef et al. 2011). The linear scheme leads to a novel upper bound on the optimal information leakage rate, which is proved to be tight over all deterministic scalar linear codes. We also derive a co…
This paper studies index coding with two senders. In this setup, source messages are distributed among the senders possibly with common messages. In addition, there are multiple receivers, with each receiver having some messages a priori, known as side-information, and requesting one unique message such that each message is requested by only one receiver. Index coding in this setup is called two-sender unicast index coding (TSUIC). The main goal is to find the shortest aggregate normalized codelength, which is expressed as the optimal broadcast rate. In this work, firstly, for a given TSUIC pr…
Index coding is often studied with the assumption that a single source has all the messages requested by the receivers. We refer to this as \emph{centralized} index coding. In contrast, this paper focuses on \emph{distributed} index coding and addresses the following question: How does the availability of messages at distributed sources (storage nodes) affect the solutions and achievable rates of index coding? An extension to the work of Arbabjolfaei et al. in ISIT 2013 is presented when distributed sources communicate via a semi-deterministic multiple access channel (MAC) to simultaneous rece…
An interference alignment perspective is used to identify the simplest instances (minimum possible number of edges in the alignment graph, no more than 2 interfering messages at any destination) of index coding problems where non-Shannon information inequalities are necessary for capacity characterization. In particular, this includes the first known example of a multiple unicast (one destination per message) index coding problem where non-Shannon information inequalities are shown to be necessary. The simplest multiple unicast example has 7 edges in the alignment graph and 11 messages. The si…
