We consider spatially homogeneous, anisotropic cosmological models in 5D whose line element can be written as $dS^2 = {\cal{A}}(u, v)du dv - {\cal{B}}_{i j}(u, v)dx^{i}dx^{j}$, $(i, j = 1, 2, 3)$, where $u$ and $v$ are light-like coordinates. In the case where ${\cal{B}}_{i j}$ is diagonal, we construct three families of analytic solutions to the 5D vacuum field equations $R_{AB} = 0$ $ (A, B = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4)$. Among them, there is a family of self-similar homothetic solutions that contains, as a particular case, the so-called light-like Kasner universes. In this work we provide a detailed study of the different types of 4D scenarios that can be embedded in such universes. For the sake of generality of the discussion, and applicability of the results, in our analysis we consider the two versions of non-compactified 5D relativity in vogue, viz., braneworld theory and induced matter theory. We find a great variety of cosmological models in 4D which are anisotropic versions of the FRW ones. We obtain models on the brane with a non-vanishing cosmological term $Λ_{(4)}$, which inflate {\it à la} de Sitter without satisfying the classical false-vacuum equation of state. Using the symmetry of the solutions, we construct a class of non-static vacuum solutions on the brane. We also develop {\it static} pancake-like distributions where the matter is concentrated in a thin surface (near $z = 0$), similar to those proposed by Zel'dovich for the shape of the first collapsed objects in an expanding anisotropic universe. The solutions discussed here can be applied in a variety of physical situations.
Quantum nature of classical flat Kasner spacetime is studied using effective spacetime description in loop quantum cosmology. We find that even though the spacetime curvature vanishes at the classical level, non-trivial quantum gravitational effects can arise. For the standard loop quantization of Bianchi-I spacetime, which uniquely yields universal bounds on expansion and shear scalars and results in a generic resolution of strong singularities, we find that a flat Kasner metric is not a physical solution of the effective spacetime description, except in a limit. The lack of a flat Kasner met…
We investigate some cylindrically symmetric nonstationary and nonstatic solutions of Einstein field equations. We first study some physical properties of a solution which can be considered as Kasner generalization of static Levi-Civita vacuum solution. Then we generalize this metric to include a solution where a space-time filled with null dust or a stiff fluid.
In this paper we consider vacuum Kasner spacetimes, focusing on those that can be parametrized as linear perturbations of the special Petrov type D case. For these quasi-D Kasner models we first investigate the modification to the principal null directions, then a Teukolsky Master Equation for fields of any spin, considering in particular the quasi-D models as curvature perturbations of the type D background. Considering the speciality index and the principal null directions and comparing the results for the exact solutions and those for the perturbative ones, this simple Kasner example allows…
Vacuum polarization of the quantized massive fields in Bianchi type I spacetime is investigated from the point of view of the adiabatic approximation and the Schwinger-DeWitt method. It is shown that both approaches give the same results that can be used in construction of the trace of the stress-energy tensor of the conformally coupled fields. The stress-energy tensor is calculated in the Bianchi type I spacetime and the back reaction of the quantized fields upon the Kasner geometry is studied. A special emphasis is put on the problem of isotropization, studied with the aid of the directional…
Due to non-perturbative quantum gravitational effects, the classical big bang singularity is replaced by a quantum big bounce of the mean scale factor in loop quantization of Bianchi-I spacetime. An important issue is to understand various differences in the physical properties of the spacetime across the bounce. We investigate this issue in the context of various geometrical structures, identified by Kasner exponents of the metric, which arise on approach to the singularity in the classical theory. Using effective spacetime description of Bianchi-I model in loop quantum cosmology with dust, r…
Solutions are found to field equations constructed from the Pauli, Bach and Gauss-Bonnet quadratic tensors to the Kasner and Kasner brane spacetimes in up to five dimensions. A double Kasner space is shown to have a vacuum solution. Brane solutions in which the bulk components of the Einstein tensor vanish are also looked at and for four branes a solution similar to radiation Robertson-Walker spacetime is found. Matter trapping of a test scalar field and a test perfect fluid are investigated using energy conditions.
We study the mode solution to the Cauchy problem of the scalar wave equation $\Box φ= 0$ in Kasner spacetimes. As a first result, we give the explicit mode solution in axisymmetric Kasner spacetimes, of which flat Kasner spacetimes are special cases. Furthermore, we give the small and large time asymptotics of the modes in general Kasner spacetimes. Generically, the modes in non-flat Kasner spacetimes grow logarithmically for small times, while the modes in flat Kasner spacetimes stay bounded for small times. For large times, however, the modes in general Kasner spacetimes oscillate with a pol…
Plane symmetric perturbations are applied to an axially symmetric Kasner spacetime which leads to no momentum flow orthogonal to the planes of symmetry. This flow appears laminar and the structure can be interpreted as a domain wall. We further extend consideration to the class of Bianchi Type I spacetimes and obtain corresponding results.
This article investigates the stability of a generic Kasner spacetime to linear perturbations, both at late and early times. It demonstrates that the perturbation of the Weyl tensor diverges at late time in all cases but in the particular one in which the Kasner spacetime is the product of a two-dimensional Milne spacetime and a two-dimensional Euclidean space. At early times, the perturbation of the Weyl tensor also diverges unless one imposes a condition on the perturbations so as to avoid the most divergent modes to be excited.
Anisotropic generalization of Randall and Sundrum brane-world model is considered. A new class of exact solutions for brane and bulk geometry is found; it is related to anisotropic Kasner solution. In view of this, the old question of isotropy of initial conditions in cosmology rises once again in the brane-world context.
We study the solutions of the Einstein equations in the presence of a thick infinite slab with constant energy density. When there is an isotropy in the plane of the slab, we find an explicit exact solution that matches with the Rindler and Weyl-Levi-Civita spacetimes outside the slab. We also show that there are solutions that can be matched with general anisotropic Kasner spacetime outside the slab. In any case, it is impossible to avoid the presence of the Kasner type singularities in contrast to the well-known case of spherical symmetry, where by matching the internal Schwarzschild solutio…
In dynamic spacetimes in which asymmetric gravitational collapse/expansion is taking place, the timelike geodesic equation appears to exhibit an interesting property: Relative to the collapsing configuration, free test particles undergo gravitational "acceleration" and form a double-jet configuration parallel to the axis of collapse. We illustrate this aspect of peculiar motion in simple spatially homogeneous cosmological models such as the Kasner spacetime. To estimate the effect of spatial inhomogeneities on cosmic jets, timelike geodesics in the Ricci-flat double-Kasner spacetime are studie…
We describe the first discrete-time 4-dimensional numerical application of Regge calculus. The spacetime is represented as a complex of 4-dimensional simplices, and the geometry interior to each 4-simplex is flat Minkowski spacetime. This simplicial spacetime is constructed so as to be foliated with a one parameter family of spacelike hypersurfaces built of tetrahedra. We implement a novel two-surface initial-data prescription for Regge calculus, and provide the first fully 4-dimensional application of an implicit decoupled evolution scheme (the ``Sorkin evolution scheme''). We benchmark this …
We construct time-dependent charged black string solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. In the far region, the spacetime approaches a five-dimensional Kasner universe with a expanding three-dimensional space and a shrinking extra dimension. Near the event horizon, the spacetime is approximately static and has a smooth event horizon. We also study the motion of test particles around the black string and show the existence of quasi-circular orbits. Finally, we briefly discuss the stability of this spacetime.
We prove stability of the family of Kasner solutions within the class of polarized $T^2$-symmetric solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations in the contracting time direction with respect to an areal time foliation. All Kasner solutions for which the asymptotic velocity parameter $K$ satisfies $|K-1|>2$ are non-linearly stable, and all sufficiently small perturbations exhibit asymptotically velocity term dominated (AVTD) behavior and blow-up of the Kretschmann scalar.
We derive the solutions of gravitational waves in the future (F) expanding and the past (P) shrinking Kanser spacetimes as well as in the left (L) and right (R) Rindler wedges in the Regge-Wheeler gauge. The solutions for all metric components are obtained in an analytic form in each region. We identify the master variables, which are equivalent to massless scalar fields, to describe the gravitational degrees of freedom for the odd parity and even parity modes under the transformation in the two-dimensional plane symmetric space. Then, the master variables are quantized, and we develop the qua…
We construct a model of a universe filled with a perfect fluid with isotropic particle pressure. The anisotropic plane symmetric Kasner spacetime is used as a seed metric and through a conformal mapping a perfect fluid is generated. The model is inhomogeneous, irrotational, shearing and accelerating. For negative time, the universe is expanding while for positive time it is collapsing. With the aid of graphical three dimensional plots it is established that the density and pressure hypersurfaces are smooth and singularity free. Additionally the sound-speed index is computed and the fluid obeys…
We study the asymptotic behavior of type A vacuum Bianchi spacetimes. It has been conjectured that this behavior is driven by a certain circle map, called the Kasner map. As a step towards this conjecture, we prove that some orbits of the Kasner map do indeed attract some solutions of the system of ODEs which describes the behavior of type A vacuum Bianchi spacetimes. The orbits of the Kasner map for which we can prove such a result are those which are not periodic and which do not accumulate on any periodic orbit. This shows the existence of Bianchi spacetimes with a aperiodic oscillatory asy…
Exact solutions to Einstein's equations for holographic models are presented and studied. The IR geometry has a timelike cousin of the Kasner singularity, which is the less generic case of the BKL (Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz) singularity, and the UV is asymptotically AdS. This solution describes a holographic RG flow between them. The solution's appearance is an interpolation between the planar AdS black hole and the AdS soliton. The causality constraint is always satisfied. The entanglement entropy and Wilson loops are discussed. The boundary condition for the current-current correlation f…
We study the global dynamical behavior of spatially homogeneous solutions of the Einstein equations in Bianchi type I symmetry, where we use non-tilted elastic matter as an anisotropic matter model that naturally generalizes perfect fluids. Based on our dynamical systems formulation of the equations we are able to prove that (i) toward the future all solutions isotropize; (ii) toward the initial singularity all solutions display oscillatory behavior; solutions do not converge to Kasner solutions but oscillate between different Kasner states. This behavior is associated with energy condition vi…
We consider a D dimensional Kasner type diagonal spacetime where metric functions depend only on a single coordinate and electromagnetic field shares the symmetries of spacetime. These solutions can describe static cylindrical or cosmological Einstein-Maxwell vacuum spacetimes. We mainly focus on electrovacuum solutions and four different types of solutions are obtained in which one of them has no four dimensional counterpart. We also consider the properties of the general solution corresponding to the exterior field of a charged line mass and discuss its several properties. Although it resemb…
The scalar wave equation in Kasner spacetime is solved, first for a particular choice of Kasner parameters, by relating the integrand in the wave packet to the Bessel functions. An alternative integral representation is also displayed, which relies upon the method of integration in the complex domain for the solution of hyperbolic equations with variable coefficients. In order to study the propagation of wave fronts, we integrate the equations of bicharacteristics which are null geodesics, and we are able to express them, for the first time in the literature, with the help of elliptic integral…
Considering a thermal state of the dual CFT with a uniform deformation by a scalar operator, we study a holographic renormalization group flow at nonzero temperature in the bulk described by the Einstein-scalar field theory with the self-interaction term $λϕ^4$ in asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetime. We show that the holographic flow with the self-interaction term could run smoothly through the event horizon of a black hole and deform the Schwarzschild singularity to a Kasner universe at late times. Furthermore, we also study the effect of the scalar self-interaction on the deformed near-singu…
We study the relations of the positive frequency mode functions of Dirac field in 4-dimensional Minkowski spacetime covered with Rindler and Kasner coordinates, and describe the explicit form of the Minkowski vacuum state with the quantum states in Kasner and Rindler regions, and analytically continue the solutions. As a result, we obtain the correspondence of the positive frequency mode functions in Kasner region and Rindler region in a unified manner which derives vacuum entanglement.
The Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz (BKL) conjecture predicts a chaotic alternation of Kasner epochs in the evolution of generic classical spacetimes towards a spacelike singularity. As a first step towards understanding the full quantum BKL scenario, we analyze a vacuum Bianchi II model with local rotational symmetry, which presents just one Kasner transition. During the Kasner epochs, the quantum state is coherent and it is thus characterized by constant values of the different quantum fluctuations, correlations and higher-order moments. By computing the constants of motion of the system we pr…
We present a singularity free class of inhomogeneous cylindrical universes filled with stiff perfect fluid $(ρ= p)$. Its matter free $ (ρ= 0)$ limit yield two distinct vacuum spacetimes which can be considered as analogues of Kasner solution for inhomogeneous singularity free spacetime.
We obtain the most general static cylindrically symmetric vacuum solutions of the Einstein field equations in $(4 + N)$ dimensions. Under the assumption of separation of variables, we construct a family of Levi-Civita-Kasner vacuum solutions in $(4 + N)$. We discuss the dimensional reduction of the static solutions. Depending on the reduction procedure, they can be interpreted either as a scalar-vacuum generalization of Levi-Civita spacetimes, or as the effective 4D vacuum spacetime outside of an idealized string in braneworld theory.
In this work, we present a new interpretation of the only static vacuum solution of Einstein's field equations with planar symmetry, the Taub solution. This solution is a member of the $AIII$ class of metrics, along with the type D Kasner solution. Various interpretations of these solutions have been put forward previously in the literature, however, some of these interpretations have suspect features and are not generally considered physical. Using a simple mathematical analysis, we show that a novel interpretation of the Taub solution is possible and that it naturally emerges from the radial…

We investigate Isaacson's high-frequency gravitational waves which propagate in some relevant cosmological models, in particular the FRW spacetimes. Their time evolution in Fourier space is explicitly obtained for various metric forms of (anti--)de Sitter universe. Behaviour of high-frequency waves in the anisotropic Kasner spacetime is also described.
We use qualitative arguments combined with numerical simulations to argue that, in the approach to the singularity in a vacuum solution of Einstein's equations with $T^2$ isometry, the evolution at a generic point in space is an endless succession of Kasner epochs, punctuated by bounces in which either a curvature term or a twist term becomes important in the evolution equations for a brief time. Both curvature bounces and twist bounces may be understood within the context of local mixmaster dynamics although the latter have never been seen before in spatially inhomogeneous cosmological spacet…
New boundary conditions are imposed on the familiar cylindrical gravitational wave vacuum spacetimes. The new spacetime family represents cylindrical waves in a flat expanding (Kasner) universe. Space sections are flat and nonconical where the waves have not reached and wave amplitudes fall off more rapidly than they do in Einstein-Rosen solutions, permitting a more regular null inifinity.
We discuss the cosmological amplification of tensor perturbations in a simple example of brane-world scenario, in which massless gravitons are localized on a higher-dimensional Kasner-like brane embedded in a bulk AdS background. Particular attention is paid to the canonical normalization of the quadratic action describing the massless and massive vacuum quantum fluctuations, and to the exact mass-dependence of the amplitude of massive fluctuations on the brane. The perturbation equations can be separated. In contrast to de Sitter models of brane inflation, we find no mass gap in the spectrum …
We consider expanding vacuum spacetimes with a CMC foliation by compact spacelike hypersurfaces. Under scale invariant a priori geometric bounds (type-III), we show that there are arbitrarily large future time intervals that are modelled by a flat spacetime or a Kasner spacetime. We give related results for a class of expanding vacuum spacetimes that do not satisfy the a priori bounds (type-II).
The curved spacetime Maxwell equations are applied to the anisotropically expanding Kasner metrics. Using the application of vector identities we derive 2$^\textrm{nd}$-order differential wave equations for the electromagnetic field components; through this explicit derivation, we find that the 2$^\textrm{nd}$-order wave equations are not uncoupled for the various components (as previously assumed), but that gravitationally-induced coupling between the electric and magnetic field components is generated directly by the anisotropy of the expansion. The lack of such coupling terms in the wave eq…
The gravitational properties of the {\em only} static plane-symmetric vacuum solution of Einstein's field equations without cosmological term (Taub's solution, for brevity) are presented: some already known properties (geodesics, weak field limit and pertainment to the Schwarzschild family of spacetimes) are reviewed in a physically much more transparent way, as well as new results about its asymptotic structure, possible matchings and nature of the source are furnished. The main results point to the fact that the solution must be interpreted as representing the exterior gravitational field du…
$f(T)$ gravity offers an alternative context in which to consider gravitational interactions where torsion, rather than curvature, is the mechanism by which gravitation is communicated. We investigate the stability of the Kasner solution with several forms of the arbitrary lagrangian function examined within the $f(T)$ context. This is a Bianchi type--I vacuum solution with anisotropic expansion factors. In the $f(T)$ gravity setting, the solution must conform to a set of conditions in order to continue to be a vacuum solution of the generalized field equations. With this solution in hand, the…
In the first part of this paper we consider expanding vacuum cosmological spacetimes with a free $T^N$-action. Among them, we give evidence that Gowdy spacetimes have AVTD (asymptotically velocity term dominated) behavior for their initial geometry, in any dimension. We then give sufficient conditions to reach a similar conclusion about a $T^2$-invariant four dimensional nonGowdy spacetime. In the second part of the paper we consider vacuum cosmological spacetimes with crushing singularities. We introduce a monotonic quantity to characterize Kasner spacetimes. Assuming scale-invariant curvatur…
We develop a complete Hamiltonian approach to the theory of perturbations around any spatially homogeneous spacetime. We employ the Dirac method for constrained systems which is well-suited to cosmological perturbations. We refine the method via the so-called Kucha\vr parametrization of the kinematical phase space. We separate the gauge-invariant dynamics of the three-surfaces from the three-surface deformations induced by linear coordinate transformations. The canonical group of the three-surface deformations and the complete space of gauge-fixing conditions are explicit in our approach. We i…
We have found new anisotropic vacuum solutions for the scale-invariant gravity theories which generalise Einstein's general relativity to a theory derived from the Lagrangian $R^{1+δ}$. These solutions are expanding universes of Kasner form with an initial spacetime singularity at $t=0 $ and exist for $-1/2<δ<1/4$ but possess different Kasner index relations to the classic Kasner solution of general relativity to which they reduce when $δ=0$. These solutions are unperturbed by the introduction of non-comoving perfect-fluid matter motions if $p<ρ$ on approach to the singularity and should not e…
Exact electromagnetic wave solutions to Maxwell equations on anisotropic Bianchi I cosmological spacetime backgrounds are studied. The waves evolving on Bianchi I spacetimes exhibit birefringence (associated to linear polarization) and dispersion. The particular case of a vacuum--dominated anisotropic Universe, which reproduces a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe (for late times) while for earlier times it matches a Kasner Universe, is studied. The electromagnetic waves do not, in general, follow null geodesics. This produces a modification of the cosmological redshift, which is now dependen…
The type D Kasner vacuum solution of general relativity is reviewed, highlighting the little-known, intriguing property that it can describe both an anisotropic cosmology and the spacetime deep within a black hole, these two descriptions linked by a reversal of the time-ordering of the solution. The flexible nature of solutions of Einstein's equations is emphasised, and a brief discussion of the arrow of time in modern physics is presented.
We study the particle trajectories in the recently proposed five dimensional warped (generalized) Ellis-Bronnikov spacetime (5D-WGEB) (which does not require exotic matter) as well as it's four dimensional counterpart (4D-GEB) in detail and conduct a comparative study. Analytical approach provides conditions which determines three types of trajectories (trapped, returning and crossing) for both 4D and 5D spacetimes. Notably in 5D geometry existence of trapped trajectories become highly sensitive to the initial conditions. We have solved the timelike geodesic equations numerically and presented…
