In this work we present scanning Fabry-Perot H$α$ observations of the isolated interacting galaxy pair NGC 5278/79 obtained with the PUMA Fabry-Perot interferometer. We derived velocity fields, various kinematic parameters and rotation curves for both galaxies. Our kinematical results together with the fact that dust lanes have been detected in both galaxies, as well as the analysis of surface brightness profiles along the minor axis, allowed us to determine that both components of the interacting pair are trailing spirals.
In optical images, the not amply studied isolated interacting galaxy pair KPG 486 (NGC 6090) displays similar features to the galaxy pair The Antennae (NGC 4038/39). To compare the distribution of ionized hydrogen gas, morphology and kinematic and dynamic behaviour between both galaxy pairs, we present observations in the H$α$ emission line of NGC 6090 acquired with the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer, PUMA. For each galaxy in NGC 6090 we obtained several kinematic parameters, its velocity field and its rotation curve, we also analysed some of the perturbations induced by their encounter. …
Using the data obtained previously from Fabry-Perot interferometry, we study the orbital characteristics of the interacting pair of galaxies KPG 302 with the aim to estimate a possible interaction history, the conditions necessary for the spiral arms formation and initial satellite mass. We found by performing N-body/SPH simulations of the interaction that a single passage can produce a grand design spiral pattern in less than 1 Gyr. Althought we reproduce most of the features with the single passage, the required satellite to host mass ratio should be 1:5, which is not confirmed with the dyna…
The aim of this paper is to present the first data set obtained with SOAR Adaptive Module-Fabry-Parot (SAM-FP), a Fabry-Perot instrument mounted inside the SOAR telescope Adaptive-Optics Module. This is the only existing imaging Fabry-Perot interferometer using laser-assisted ground-layer adaptive optics. SAM-FP was used to observe the ionized gas, traced by Halpha, in the centre of the 30 Doradus starburst (the Tarantula Nebula) in the Large Magellanic Cloud, with high spatial (~0.6" or 0.15 pc) and spectral (R=11200) resolution. Radial velocity, velocity dispersion and monochromatic maps wer…
The distributions of stars, gas, and dark matter in disk galaxies provide important constraints on galaxy formation models, particularly on small spatial scales (<1kpc). We have designed the RSS Imaging spectroscopy Nearby Galaxy Survey (RINGS) to target a sample of 19 nearby spiral galaxies. For each of these galaxies, we are obtaining and modeling Halpha and H1~21~cm spectroscopic data as well as multi-band photometric data. We intend to use these models to explore the underlying structure and evolution of these galaxies in a cosmological context, as well as whether the predictions of LCDM a…
We present new 2D high resolution Fabry-Perot spectroscopic observations of 152 star-forming galaxies which are part of the $Herschel$ Reference Survey (HRS), a complete $K$-band selected, volume-limited sample of nearby galaxies, spanning a wide range in stellar mass and morphological type. Using improved data reduction techniques that provide adaptive binning based on Voronoi tessellation, using large field-of-view observations, we derive high spectral resolution (R$>$10,000) H$α$ datacubes from which we compute H$α$ maps and radial 2D velocity fields that are based on several thousand indep…
We present a kinematical study of 29 spiral galaxies included in the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies, using Halpha Fabry-Perot data obtained with the Galaxy Halpha Fabry-Perot System instrument at the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma, complemented with images in the R-band and in Halpha. The primary goal is to study the evolution and properties of the main structural components of galaxies through the kinematical analysis of the FP data, complemented with studies of morphology, star formation and mass distribution. In this paper we describe how the FP data have been obtai…
We have observed 10 interacting galaxy pairs using the Fabry-Perot interferometer GH$α$FaS (Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Perot system) on the $4.2\rm{m}$ William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma. We present here the H$α$ surface brightness, velocity and velocity dispersion maps for the 10 systems we have not previously observed using this technique, as well as the physical properties (sizes, H$α$ luminosities and velocity dispersion) of 1259 HII regions from the full sample. We also derive the physical properties of 1054 HII regions in a sample of 28 isola…
We present the Waves in Nearby Disk galaxies Survey (WiNDS) consisting of 40 nearby low inclination disk galaxies observed through H$α$ high-resolution Fabry Perot interferometry. WiNDS consists of 12 new galaxy observations and 28 data archived observations obtained from different galaxy surveys. We derive two-dimensional line-of-sight velocity fields that are analyzed to identify the possible presence of vertical velocity flows in the galactic disks of these low-inclination late-type galaxies using velocity residual maps, derived from the subtraction of an axisymmetric rotation model to rota…
We present new Fabry-Perot observations for a sample of 42 galaxies located in twelve compact groups of galaxies: HCG 1, HCG 14, HCG 25, HCG 44, HCG 53, HCG 57, HCG 61, HCG 69, HCG 93, VV 304, LGG 455 and Arp 314. From the 42 observed galaxies, a total of 26 objects are spiral galaxies, which range from Sa to Im morphological types. The remaining 16 objects are E, S0 and S0a galaxies. Using these observations, we have derived velocity maps, monochromatic and velocity dispersion maps for 24 galaxies, where 18 are spiral, three are S0a, two are S0 and one is an Im galaxy. From the 24 velocity fi…
(abridged) Luminous blue compact galaxies are among the most active galaxies in the local universe in terms of their star formation rate per unit mass. They may be seen as the local analogs of higher redshift Lyman Break Galaxies. Studies of their kinematics is key to understanding what triggers their unusually active star formation In this work we investigate the kinematics of stars and ionised gas in Haro11, one of the most luminous blue compact galaxies in the local universe. Previous works have indicated that many such galaxies may be triggered by galaxy mergers. We have employed Fabry-Per…
We have observed three luminous infrared galaxy systems (LIRGS) which are pairs of interacting galaxies, with the Galaxy H$α$ Fabry-Perot system (GH$α$FaS) mounted on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, and combined the observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of these systems in CO emission to compare the physical properties of the star formation regions and the molecular gas clouds, and specifically the internal kinematics of the star forming regions. We identified 88 star forming regions in the H$α$ emission data-cub…
Interacting galaxies provide us with an excellent laboratory for studying a number of physical phenomena associated with these processes. In this paper, we present a spectroscopic and kinematic analysis of the interacting galaxy NGC 4656 and its companion Tidal Dwarf Galaxy (TDG) candidate, NGC 4656UV. Using Fabry-Perot and GMOS multi-slit data, we investigated the possible origin of NGC 4656UV. We found that NGC 4656UV has a low metallicity (12+log(O/H)$\sim$8.2) and it follows the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) for normal dwarf galaxies. For NGC 4656, we estimated a flat oxygen abundance gr…
We present the results of a detailed study of the central part of the Seyfert galaxy Mkn 938. Observational data were obtained with the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences using integral-field spectrograph MPFS and a scanning Fabry--Perot interferometer. Mkn 938 is interesting for being a result of a merger of two gas-rich galaxies, and we observe the final stage of this interaction accompanied with an extremely powerful burst of star formation and nuclear activity. Our analysis of the kinematics of gas and stars revealed the presence of ga…
Encounters between galaxies modify their morphology, kinematics, and star formation (SF) history. The relation between these changes and external perturbations is not straightforward. The great number of parameters involved requires both the study of large samples and individual encounters where particular features, motions, and perturbations can be traced and analysed in detail. We analysed the morphology, kinematics, and dynamics of two luminous infrared spiral galaxies, NGC 5257 and NGC 5258, in which SF is mostly confined to the spiral arms, in order to understand interactions between gala…
We present a detailed study of the shape of the innermost part of the rotation curves of a sample of 29 nearby spiral galaxies, based on high angular and spectral resolution kinematic Halpha Fabry-Perot observations. In particular, we quantify the steepness of the rotation curve by measuring its slope dRvc(0). We explore the relationship between the inner slope and several galaxy parameters, such as stellar mass, maximum rotational velocity, central surface brightness (μ0), bar strength and bulge-to-total ratio. Even with our limited dynamical range, we find a trend for low-mass galaxies to ex…
Mass models of 100 nearby spiral and irregular galaxies, covering morphological types from Sa to Irr, are computed using H$α$ rotation curves and R$_c$-band surface brightness profiles. The kinematics was obtained using a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer. One of the aims is to compare our results with those from Korsaga et al. (2018), which used mid-infrared (MIR) WISE W1 (3.4 $μ$m) photometric data. For the analysis, the same tools were used for both bands. Pseudo-Isothermal (ISO) core and Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) cuspy models have been used. We test Best Fit Models (BFM), Maximum Disc Mo…
We have used Spitzer images of a sample of 68 barred spiral galaxies in the local universe to make systematic measurements of bar length and bar strength. We combine these with precise determinations of the corotation radii associated with the bars, taken from our previous study which used the phase change from radial inflow to radial outflow of gas at corotation, based on high resolution two-dimensional velocity fields in Hα taken with a Fabry-Pérot spectrometer. After presenting the histograms of the derived bar parameters, we study their dependence on the galaxy morphological type and on th…
We present Rc-band surface photometry for 170 of the 203 galaxies in GHASP, Gassendi H-Alpha survey of SPirals, a sample of late-type galaxies for which high-resolution Fabry-Perot Hα maps have previously been obtained. Our data set is constructed by new Rc-band observations taken at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP), supplemented with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) archival data, obtained with the purpose of deriving homogeneous photometric profiles and parameters. Our results include Rc-band surface brightness profiles for 170 galaxies and $ugriz$ profiles for 108 of these objects. W…
We present the first galactic-scale model of the gas dynamics of the prototype barred Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC1097. We use large scale FaNTOmM Fabry-Perot interferometric data covering the entire galactic disc and combine the distribution and kinematics maps with high resolution two-dimensional spectroscopy from the Gemini telescope. We build a dynamical model for the gravitational potential by applying the analytic solution to the equations of motion, within the epicyclic approximation. Our model reproduces all the significant kinematic and structural signatures of this galaxy. We find that the p…
We present the photometric and kinematic characterization of two groups, USGC U268 and USGC U376 located in different regions of the Leo cloud. U268, composed of 10 catalogued members and 11 new added members, has a small fraction (~24%) of early-type galaxies (ETGs). U376 has 16 plus 8 new added members, with ~38% of ETGs. We find the presence of significant substructures in both groups suggesting that they are likely accreting galaxies. U268 is located in a more loose environment than U376. For each member galaxy, broad band integrated and surface photometry have been obtained in far-UV and …
