The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), due to launch in 2014, shall provide an unprecedented wealth of information in the near and mid-infrared wavelengths, thanks to its high-sensitivity instruments and its 6.5 m primary mirror, the largest ever launched into space. NIRSpec and MIRI, the two spectrographs onboard JWST, will play a key role in the study of the spectral features of Active Galactic Nuclei in the 0.6-28 micron wavelength range. This talk aims at presenting an overview of the possibilities provided by these two instruments, in order to prepare the astronomical community for the JWST era.

Next generation observatories will enable us to study the first billion years of our Universe in unprecedented detail. Foremost among these are 21-cm interferometry with the HERA and the SKA, and high-$z$ galaxy observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Taking a basic galaxy model, in which we allow the star formation rates and ionizing escape fractions to have a power-law dependence on halo mass with an exponential turnover below some threshold, we quantify how observations from these instruments can be used to constrain the astrophysics of high-$z$ galaxies. For this purpose, …

Still largely unexplored, the diffuse light in cluster of galaxies traces the past and on-going buildup of these massive structures. Here, we present the first comprehensive study of the intracluster light (ICL) of the cluster SMACS-J0723.3-7327 (z=0.39) using the JWST Early Release Observations. These deep and high spatial resolution images allow the study of the ICL with high signal-to-noise ratio up to a radial distance of $\sim400$ kpc, twice as far with respect to previous HST studies of intermediate redshift clusters. This opens up the possibility of exploring the rich mixture of process…
A Promise for the JWST era: Massive black holes directly collapsed from wave dark matter haloes, and Star formation in and around their accretion flows
Limited constraints on the evolution of the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fraction represent one of the primary uncertainties in the theoretical determination of the reionization history. Due to the intervening intergalactic medium (IGM), the possibility of observing LyC photons directly in the epoch of reionization is highly unlikely. For this reason, multiple indirect probes of LyC escape have been identified, some of which are used to identify low-redshift LyC leakers (e.g. O32), while others are primarily useful at $z>6$ (e.g. [OIII]/[CII] far infrared emission). The flux ratio of the reson…

The perfect case for time-domain investigations are active galactic nuclei (AGNs) since they are luminous objects that show strong variability. Key result from the studies of AGNs variability is the estimated mass of a supermassive black hole (SMBH), which resides in the center of an AGN. Moreover, the spectral variability of AGN can be used to study the structure and physics of the broad line region, which in general can be hardly directly observed. Here we review the current status of AGNs variability investigations in Serbia, in the perspectives of the present and future monitoring campaign…
A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE): A First Look at the Rest-frame Optical Spectra of $z > 6.5$ Quasars Using JWST
We calculate the relic density of stau at the beginning of the Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) era in the coannihilation scenario of minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). In this scenario, stau can be long-lived and form bound states with nuclei. We put constraints on the parameter space of MSSM by connecting the calculation of the relic density of stau to the observation of the light elements abundance, which strongly depends on the relic density of stau. Consistency between the theoretical prediction and the observational result, both of the dark matter abundance and the light element…
The scheduled launch of James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in late 2021 marks a new start for studies of galaxy formation at high redshift z>~6 during the era of Cosmic Reionization. JWST can capture sensitive, high-resolution images and multi-object spectroscopy in the infrared that will transform our view of galaxy formation during the first billion years of cosmic history. This review summarizes our current knowledge of the role of galaxies in reionizing intergalactic hydrogen ahead of JWST, achieved through observations with Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based facilities including Keck,…
A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE): JWST Discovers an Overdensity around a Metal Absorption-selected Galaxy at $z\sim5.5$
Deep X-ray surveys have provided a comprehensive and largely unbiased view of active galactic nuclei (AGN) evolution stretching back to $z \sim 5$. However, it has been challenging to use the survey results to connect this evolution to the cosmological environment that AGNs inhabit. Exploring this connection will be crucial to understanding the triggering mechanisms of AGNs and how these processes manifest in observations at all wavelengths. In anticipation of upcoming wide-field X-ray surveys that will allow quantitative analysis of AGN environments, this paper presents a method to observatio…
The orientation-based unification model of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) posits that the principle difference between obscured (Type 2) and unobscured (Type 1) AGNs is the line-of-sight into the central engine. If this model is correct than there should be no difference in many of the properties of AGN host galaxies (e.g., the mass of the surrounding dark matter haloes). However, recent clustering analyses of Type 1 and Type 2 AGNs have provided some evidence for a difference in the halo mass, in conflict with the orientation-based unified model. In this work, a method to compute the Condition…
