It is commonly assumed in the studies of the fractional quantum Hall effect that the physics of a fractional quantum Hall state, in particular the character of its excitations, is invariant under a continuous deformation of the Hamiltonian during which the gap does not close. We show in this article that, at least for finite systems, as the interaction is changed from a model three body interaction to Coulomb, the ground state at filling factor $ν=2/5$ evolves continuously from the so-called Gaffnian wave function to the composite fermion wave function, but the quasiholes alter their character in a nonperturbative manner. This is attributed to the fact that the Coulomb interaction opens a gap in the Gaffnian quasihole sector, pushing many of the states to very high energies. Interestingly, the states below the gap are found to have a one-to-one correspondence with the composite fermion theory, suggesting that the Gaffnian model contains composite fermions, and that the Gaffnian quasiholes are unstable to the formation of composite fermions when a two-body interaction term is switched on. General implications of this study are discussed.
We consider the quantum Hall effect induced by magnetic field and rotation, which can drive the Hall samples into the quantum Hall regime and induce fractional excitations. Both the mass and the charge of the Laughlin quasiparticles are predicted to be fractionally quantized. The observable effects induced by rotation are discussed. Based on the usual Hall samples under rotation, we propose an experimental setup for detecting the macroscopic quantization phenomena and the fractional mass of the Laughlin quasiparticles.
Using the Onsager relation between electric and heat transport coefficients, and considering the very different roles played by the quantum Hall condensate and quasiparticles in transport, we argue that near the center of a quantum Hall plateau thermopower in a Corbino geometry measures {\it "entropy per quasiparticle per quasiparticle charge"}. This relation indicates that thermopower measurement in a Corbino setup is a more direct measure of quasiparticle entropy than in a Hall bar. Treating disorder within the self-consistent Born approximation, we show through an explicit microscopic calcu…
We show in this paper that thermopower is enhanced in non-Abelian quantum Hall liquids under appropriate conditions. This is because thermopower measures entropy per electron in the clean limit, while the degeneracy and entropy associated with non-Abelian quasiparticles enhance entropy when they are present. Thus thermopower can potentially probe non-Abelian nature of the quasiparticles, and measure their quantum dimension.
Determination of properties of quasiparticle excitations is an important task in the experimental investigation of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). We propose a model-independent method for finding the scaling dimension of FQHE quasiparticles from measurements of the electric current tunneling between two FQHE edges and its noise. In comparison to the commonly used method based on measuring the tunneling current only, the proposed method is less prone to the errors due to non-universal physics of tunnel junctions.
The charge of quasiparticles in a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) liquid, tunneling through a partly reflecting constriction with transmission t, was determined via shot noise measurements. In the nu=1/3 FQH state, a charge smoothly evolving from e*=e/3 for t=1 to e*=e for t<<1 was determined, agreeing with chiral Luttinger liquid theory. In the nu=2/5 FQH state the quasiparticle charge evolves smoothly from e*=e/5 at t=1 to a maximum charge less than e*=e/3 at t<<1. Thus it appears that quasiparticles with an approximate charge e/5 pass a barrier they see as almost opaque.
The statistics of tunneling current in a fractional quantum Hall sample with an antidot is studied in the chiral Luttinger liquid picture of edge states. A comparison between Fano factor and skewness is proposed in order to clearly distinguish the charge of the carriers in both the thermal and the shot limit. In addition, we address effects on current moments of non-universal exponents in single-quasiparticle propagators. Positive correlations, result of propagators behaviour, are obtained in the shot noise limit of the Fano factor, and possible experimental consequences are outlined.
We report experiments in a large, 2.5 micron diameter Fabry-Perot quantum Hall interferometer with two tunneling constrictions. Interference fringes are observed as conductance oscillations as a function of applied magnetic field (the Aharonov-Bohm flux through the electron island) or a global backgate voltage (electronic charge in the island). Depletion is such that in the fractional quantum Hall regime, filling 1/3 current-carrying chiral edge channels pass through constrictions when the island filling is 2/5. The interferometer device is calibrated with fermionic electrons in the integer qu…
We derive the low-energy theory of semi-quantized quantum Hall states, a recently observed class of gapless bilayer fractional quantum Hall states. Our theory shows these states to feature gapless quasiparticles of fractional charge coupled to an emergent Chern-Simons gauge field. These gapless quasiparticles can be understood as composites of electrons and Laughlin-like quasiparticles. We show that semi-quantized quantum Hall states exhibit perfect interlayer drag, host non-Fermi liquid physics, and serve as versatile parent states for fully gapped topological phases hosting anyonic excitatio…
We propose a device consisting in an antidot periodically driven in time by a magnetic field as a fractional quantum Hall counterpart of the celebrated mesoscopic capacitor-based single electron source. We fully characterize the setup as an ideal emitter of individual quasiparticles and electrons into fractional quantum Hall edge channels of the Laughlin sequence. Our treatment relies on a master equation approach and identifies the optimal regime of operation for both types of sources. The quasiparticle/quasihole emission regime involves in practice only two charge states of the antidot, allo…
A microscopic confirmation of the fractional statistics of the {\em quasiparticles} in the fractional quantum Hall effect has so far been lacking. We calculate the statistics of the composite-fermion quasiparticles at $ν=1/3$ and $ν=2/5$ by evaluating the Berry phase for a closed loop encircling another composite-fermion quasiparticle. A careful consideration of subtle perturbations in the trajectory due to the presence of an additional quasiparticle is crucial for obtaining the correct value of the statistics. The conditions for the applicability of the fractional statistics concept are discu…
Fractional quantum Hall quasiparticles are generally characterized by two quantum numbers: electric charge $Q$ and scaling dimension $Δ$. For the simplest states (such as the Laughlin series) the scaling dimension determines the quasiparticle's anyonic statistics (the statistical phase $θ=2πΔ$). For more complicated states (featuring counterpropagating modes or non-Abelian statistics) knowing the scaling dimension is not enough to extract the quasiparticle statistics. Nevertheless, even in those cases knowing the scaling dimension facilitates distinguishing different candidate theories for des…
The analytical expressions for both diagonal and off-diagonal ac and dc conductivities of graphene placed in an external magnetic field are derived. These conductivities exhibit rather unusual behavior as functions of frequency, chemical potential and applied field which is caused by the fact that the quasiparticle excitations in graphene are Dirac-like. One of the most striking effects observed in graphene is the odd integer quantum Hall effect. We argue that it is caused by the anomalous properties of the Dirac quasiparticles from the lowest Landau level. Other quantities such as Hall angle …
The quasiparticle propagator of Haldane-Rezayi(HR) fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state is calculated, based on a chiral fermion model (or a Weyl fermion model) equipped with a hidden spin SU(2) symmetry. The spectrum of the chiral fermion model for each total spin and total momentum is shown to be identical to that of the SU(2) c = -2 model introduced to describe the edge spectrum of the HR state.
We investigate quasiparticles in bilayer quantum Hall systems around total filling factor nu =1 by current-pumped and resistively detected NMR. The measured Knight shift reveals that the spin component in the quasiparticle increases continuously with $Δ_{SAS}$. Combined with results for the pseudospin component obtained by activation gap measurements, this demonstrates that both spin and pseudospin are contained in a quasiparticle at intermediate $Δ_{SAS}$, providing evidence for the existence of the spin-pseudospin intermixed SU(4) skyrmion. Nuclear spin relaxation measurements show that the …
We report experiments on temperature and Hall voltage bias dependence of the superperiodic conductance oscillations in the novel Laughlin quasiparticle interferometer, where quasiparticles of the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall fluid execute a closed path around an island of the 2/5 fluid. The amplitude of the oscillations fits well the quantum-coherent thermal dephasing dependence predicted for a two point-contact chiral edge channel interferometer in the full experimental temperature range 10.2<T<141 mK. The temperature dependence observed in the interferometer is clearly distinct from the behav…
In the pattern-of-zeros approach to quantum Hall states, a set of data {n;m;S_a|a=1,...,n; n,m,S_a in N} (called the pattern of zeros) is introduced to characterize a quantum Hall wave function. In this paper we find sufficient conditions on the pattern of zeros so that the data correspond to a valid wave function. Some times, a set of data {n;m;S_a} corresponds to a unique quantum Hall state, while other times, a set of data corresponds to several different quantum Hall states. So in the latter cases, the patterns of zeros alone does not completely characterize the quantum Hall states. In thi…
Current statistics of an antidot in the fractional quantum Hall regime is studied for Laughlin's series. The chiral Luttinger liquid picture of edge states with a renormalized interaction exponent $g$ is adopted. Several peculiar features are found in the sequential tunneling regime. On one side, current displays negative differential conductance and double-peak structures when $g<1$. On the other side, universal sub-poissonian transport regimes are identified through an analysis of higher current moments. A comparison between Fano factor and skewness is proposed in order to clearly distinguis…
We consider tunneling through two point contacts between two edges of Quantum Hall liquids of different filling factors $ν_{0,1}=1/ (2m_{0,1}+1)$ with $m_0-m_1\equiv m>0$. Properties of the antidot formed between the point contacts in the strong-tunneling limit are shown to be very different from the $ν_0 =ν_1$ case, and include vanishing average total current in the two contacts and quasiparticles of charge $e/m$. For $m>1$, quasiparticle tunneling leads to non-trivial $m$-state dynamics of effective flux through the antidot which restores the regular ``electron'' periodicity of the current i…
In this work, two quasiparticle excitation energies per particle are calculated analytically for systems with up to $N = 7$ electrons in both Laughlin and composite fermions (CF) theories by considering the full jellium potential which consists of three parts, the electron-electron, electron-background, and background-background Coulomb interactions. The exact results we have obtained confirm the fact that the CF-wavefunction for two quasiparticles has lower energy than Laughlin wavefunction though the found difference between Laughlin and (CF) two quasiparticle energies decreases as the syste…
In CeCoIn$_5$, the thermal conductivity $κ_{xx}$ and Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ below $T_c$ display large anomalies below $T_c$. The strong suppression of the anomalies in weak fields implies the existence of long-lived quasiparticles. We also discuss briefly the Wiedemann-Franz ratio and the existence of a strongly field-dependent spin-fluctuation heat current.
Recent pioneering works have set the stage for exploring anyon braiding statistics from negative current cross-correlations along two intersecting quasiparticle beams. In such a dual-source - analyzer quantum point contact setup, also referred to as 'collider', the anyon exchange phase of fractional quantum Hall quasiparticles is predicted to be imprinted into the cross-correlations characterized by an effective Fano-factor $P$. In the case of symmetric incoming quasiparticle beams, conventional fermions result in a vanishing $P$. In marked contrast, we observe signatures of anyon statistics i…
We study theoretically nonequilibrium noise in the fractional quantum Hall regime for an Aharonov Bohm ring which has a third contact in the middle of the ring. We show that as a consequence of their fractional statistics the tunneling of a Laughlin quasiparticle between the inner and outer edge of the ring changes the effective Aharonov Bohm flux experienced by quasiparticles going around the ring, leading to a change in the conductance across the ring. A small current in the middle contact therefore gives rise to fluctuations in the current flowing across the ring which resemble random teleg…
We investigate the finite frequency (f.f.) noise properties of edge states in the quantum Hall regime. We consider the measurement scheme of a resonant detector coupled to a quantum point contact in the weak-backscattering limit. A detailed analysis of the difference between the "measured" noise, due to the presence of the resonant detector, and the symmetrized f.f. noise is presented. We discuss both the Laughlin and Jain sequences, studying the tunnelling excitations in these hierarchical models. We argue that the measured noise can better distinguish between the different excitations in the…
Electrons in two dimensions and strong magnetic fields effectively lose their kinetic energy and display exotic behavior dominated by Coulomb forces. When the ratio of electrons to magnetic flux quanta in the system is near 5/2, the unique correlated phase that emerges is predicted to be gapped with fractionally charged quasiparticles and a ground state degeneracy that grows exponentially as these quasiparticles are introduced. Interestingly, the only way to transform between the many ground states would be to braid the fractional excitations around each other, a property with applications in …
We study the spin of the localised quasiparticle excitations of lowest-Landau-level quantum Hall states defined on a disk. The spin that we propose satisfies the spin-statistics relation and can be used to reconstruct the topological geometric phase associated to the exchange of two arbitrarily chosen quasiparticles. Since it is related to the quadrupole moment of the quasiparticle charge distribution, it can be measured in an experiment and could reveal anyonic properties in a way that is complementary to the interferometric schemes employed so far. We first discuss our definition for the qua…
We study the trapping of Abelian anyons (quasiholes and quasiparticles) by a local potential (e.g., induced by an AFM tip) in a microscopic model of fractional quantum Hall liquids with long-range Coulomb interaction and edge confining potential. We find, in particular, at Laughlin filling fraction $ν= 1/3$, both quasihole and quasiparticle states can emerge as the ground state of the system in the presence of the trapping potential. As expected, we find the presence of an Abelian quasihole has no effect on the edge spectrum of the quantum liquid, unlike in the non-Abelian case [Phys. Rev. Let…
Determining plateau widths and energy gaps is the remaining task to fully understand the electron transport that gives the fractional quantum Hall effect at the lowest Landau level (LLL). We report that this determination is given by the degree of multi-particle correlations that governs the split distance of the fine structure of the LLL.We show that an electron flowing through an incompressible strip formed in a Hall bar behaves as a quasiparticle comprising the electron and its image, which replaces the confining potential of the incompressible strip. This quasiparticle is a composite boson…
We show that every even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state possesses at least two robust, topologically distinct gapless edge phases if charge conservation is broken at the boundary by coupling to a superconductor. The new edge phase allows for the possibility of a direct coupling between electrons and emergent neutral fermions of the FQH state. This can potentially be experimentally probed through geometric resonances in the tunneling density of states at the edge, providing a probe of fractionalized, yet electrically neutral, bulk quasiparticles. Other measurable consequences in…
Electrons that are confined to a single Landau level in a two dimensional electron gas realize the effects of strong electron-electron repulsion in its purest form. The kinetic energy of individual electrons is completely quenched and all physical properties are dictated solely by many-body effects. A remarkable consequence is the emergence of new quasiparticles with fractional charge and exotic quantum statistics of which the most exciting ones are non-Abelian quasiparticles. A non-integer quantized thermal Hall conductance $κ_{xy}$ (in units of temperature times the universal constant $π^2 k…
The interplay between interaction and disorder-induced localization is of fundamental interest. This article addresses localization physics in the fractional quantum Hall state, where both interaction and disorder have nonperturbative consequences. We provide compelling theoretical evidence that the localization of a single quasiparticle of the fractional quantum Hall state at filling factor $ν=n/(2n+1)$ has a striking {\it quantitative} correspondence to the localization of a single electron in the $(n+1)$th Landau level. By analogy to the dramatic experimental manifestations of Anderson loca…
We investigate the relationship of the spontaneously inter-layer coherent ``111''state of quantum Hall bilayers at total filling factor ν=1 to ``mutual'' composite fermions, in which vortices in one layer are bound to electrons in the other. Pairing of the mutual composite fermions leads to the low-energy properties of the 111 state, as we explicitly demonstrate using field-theoretic techniques. Interpreting this relationship as a mechanism for inter-layer coherence leads naturally to two candidate states with non-quantized Hall conductance: the mutual composite Fermi liquid, and an inter-laye…
The quantum Hall superfluid is presently the only viable candidate for a realization of quasiparticles with fractional Berry phase statistics. For a simple vortex excitation, relevant for a subset of fractional Hall states considered by Laughlin, non-trivial Berry phase statistics were demonstrated many years ago by Arovas, Schrieffer, and Wilczek. The quasiparticles are in general more complicated, described accurately in terms of excited composite fermions. We use the method developed by Kjonsberg, Myrheim and Leinaas to compute the Berry phase for a single composite-fermion quasiparticle, a…
We consider signatures of abelian and nonabelian quasiparticle statistics in quantum Hall Fabry-Perot interferometers. When quasiparticles enter and exit the interference cell, for instance due to glassy motion in the dopant layer, the anyonic phase can be observed in phase jumps. In the case of the nonabelian nu=5/2 state, if the interferometer is small, we argue that free Majorana states in the interference cell are either strongly coupled to one another or are strongly coupled to the edge. We analyze the expected phase jumps and in particular suggest that changes in the parity of the Majora…
Low-energy electronic states in monolayer and bilayer graphenes present chiral charge carriers with unique and unusual properties of interest for electronic applications. Here, we report the magnetotransport measurements in the ABC-stacked trilayer graphene as a function of charge carrier density, magnetic field, and temperature, which show clear evidence of l = 3 chiral quasiparticles with cubic dispersion, existing in a large, 20x60 sq. microns device. Shubnikov-deHaas oscillations (SdHO) reveal the Berry's phase 3π, and the marked increase of cyclotron mass near charge neutrality, consisten…
Motivated by the quasiparticle wavefunction in the composite fermion (CF) theory for fractional quantum Hall filling factor $ν= 1/m$, I consider a suitable quasiparticle operator in differential form, as a modified form of Laughlin's quasiparticle operator, that reproduces quasiparticle wave function as predicted in the CF theory. I further consider the conjugate of this operator as quasihole operator for obtaining a novel quasihole wave function for $1/m$ state. Each of these wave functions is interpreted as expelled electron into a different Hilbert subspace from the original Hilbert space o…
We report experimental realization of a quasiparticle interferometer where the entire system is in 1/3 primary fractional quantum Hall state. The interferometer consists of chiral edge channels coupled by quantum-coherent tunneling in two constrictions, thus enclosing an Aharonov-Bohm area. We observe magnetic flux and charge periods h/e and e/3, equivalent to creation of one quasielectron in the island. Quantum theory predicts a 3h/e flux period for charge e/3, integer statistics particles. Accordingly, the observed periods demonstrate the anyonic statistics of Laughlin quasiparticles.
A most interesting feature of certain fractional quantum Hall states is that their quasiparticles obey non-Abelian fractional statistics. So far, candidate non-Abelian wave functions have been constructed from conformal blocks in cleverly chosen conformal field theories. In this work we present a hierarchy scheme by which we can construct daughter states by condensing non-Abelian quasiparticles (as opposed to quasiholes) in a parent state, and show that the daughters have a non-Abelian statistics that differ from the parent. In particular, we discuss the daughter of the bosonic, spin-polarized…
A Quantum Antidot electrometer has been used in the first direct observation of the fractionally quantized electric charge. In this paper we report experiments performed on the integer i = 1, 2 and fractional f = 1/3 quantum Hall plateaus extending over a filling factor range of at least 27%. We find the charge of the Laughlin quasiparticles to be invariantly e/3, with standard deviation of 1.2% and absolute accuracy of 4%, independent of filling, tunneling current, and temperature.
We study a Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) interferometer formed with chiral edge channels of a quantum Hall system. HBT cross-correlations are calculated for a device operating both in the integer and fractional quantum Hall regimes, the latter at Laughlin filling fractions. We find that in both cases, when the current is dominated by electron tunneling, current-current correlations show antibunching, characteristic of fermionic correlations. When the current-current correlations are dominated by quasiparticle tunneling, the correlations reveal bunching, characteristic of bosons. For electron t…
It is shown, with the help of exact diagonalization studies on systems with up to sixteen electrons, in the presence of up to two delta function impurities, that the Pfaffian model is inadequate for the actual quasiholes and quasiparticles of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect. Implications for non-Abelian statistics are discussed.
It has been shown that different Abelian and non-Abelian fraction quantum Hall states can be characterized by patterns of zeros described by sequences of integers {S_a}. In this paper, we will show how to use the data {S_a} to calculate various topological properties of the corresponding fraction quantum Hall state, such as the number of possible quasiparticle types and their quantum numbers, as well as the actions of the quasiparticle tunneling and modular transformations on the degenerate ground states on torus.
We study the time-dependent dynamical phase of fractional quasiparticles in quantum Hall states using Ramsey interferometry. A Ramsey two-pulse voltage modulation generates an interference term in the current noise of a quantum point contact oscillating with the dynamical phase. We show that the interference pattern probes the Green's function of the fractional quasi-particles in the time domain and reveals the fractional charge. We address both the case of a point-like tunnel junction and the case of momentum-resolved tunneling which also provides information on the speed of those quasipartic…
We study the effect of magnetic fields up to 15 T on the heavy fermion state of YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ via Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements down to 50 mK. Our data show anomalies at three different characteristic fields. We compare our data to renormalized band structure calculations through which we identify Lifshitz transitions associated with the heavy fermion bands. The Hall measurements indicate that the de-renormalization of the quasiparticles, {\it i.e} the destruction of the local Kondo singlets, occurs smoothly while the Lifshitz transitions occur within rather confined regions …
There is growing evidence that the superconducting semimetal FeSe ($T_c\sim8$ K) is in the crossover regime between weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and strong-coupling Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) limits. We report on longitudinal and transverse thermal conductivities, $κ_{xx}$ and $κ_{xy}$, respectively, in magnetic fields up to 20 T. The field dependences of $κ_{xx}$ and $κ_{xy}$ imply that a highly anisotropic small superconducting gap forms at the electron Fermi-surface pocket whereas a more isotropic and larger gap forms at the hole pocket. Below $\sim1.0$ K, both $κ_{xx}$…

We compute the electrical and thermal conductivities and Hall conductivities of the $d$-density wave (DDW) state in the low-temperature impurity-scattering-dominated regime for low-dopings, at which they are dominated by nodal quasiparticles. We show that the longitudinal conductivity in this limit in the DDW state is not Drude-like. However, the thermal conductivty is Drude-like; this is a reflection of the discrepancy between electrical and thermal transport at finite frequency in the DDW state. An extreme example of this occurs in the $μ=0$, $τ\to\infty$ limit, where there is a strong viola…
