MnSi is a cubic compound with small magnetic anisotropy, which stabilizes a helimagnetic spin spiral that reduces to a ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic state in the long- and short-wavelength limit, respectively. We report a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of the collective magnetic excitations in the helimagnetic state of MnSi. In our study we observe a rich variety of seemingly anomalous excitation spectra, as measured in well over twenty different locations in reciprocal space. Using a model based on only three parameters, namely the measured pitch of the helix, the measured ferromagnetic spin wave stiffness and the amplitude of the signal, as the only free variable, we can simultaneously account for \textit{all} of the measured spectra in excellent quantitative agreement with experiment. Our study identifies the formation of intense, strongly coupled bands of helimagnons as a universal characteristic of systems with weak chiral interactions.
The Goldstone mode in a helical magnetic phase, also known as the helimagnon, is a propagating mode with a highly anisotropic dispersion relation. Here we study theoretically the helimagnon excitations in a complex chiral ground state of pyrochlore antiferromagnets such as spinel CdCr2O4 and itinerant magnet YMn2. We show that the effective theory of the soft modes in the helical state possesses a symmetry similar to that of smectic liquid crystals. We compute the low-energy spin-wave spectrum based on a microscopic spin Hamiltonian and find a dispersion relation characteristic of the helimagn…
We experimentally study magnetic resonances in the helical and conical magnetic phases of the chiral magnetic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ at the temperature $T$=5 K. Using a broadband microwave spectroscopy technique based on vector network analysis, we identify three distinct sets of helimagnon resonances in the frequency range 2 GHz $\leq f \leq$ 20 GHz. The extracted resonance frequencies are in accordance with calculations of the helimagnon bandstructure found in an intrinsic chiral magnonic crystal. The periodic modulation of the equilibrium spin direction that leads to the formation of the …
Recent neutron scattering measurements on the spinel CdCr2O4 revealed a rare example of helical magnetic order in geometrically frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet. The spin spiral characterized by an incommensurate wavevector Q = 2pi (0, delta, 1) with delta ~0.09 is accompanied by a tetragonal distortion. Here we conduct a systematic study on the magnetic ground state resulting from the interplay between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and further neighbor exchange couplings, two of the most important mechanisms for stabilizing incommensurate spin orders. We compute the low-energy sp…

The low temperature dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance frequency and spin-lattice relaxation rate measured in the chiral magnet MnSi by Yasuoka and coworkers [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 85, 073701 (2016)] is interpreted in terms of helimagnon excitations. The theoretically predicted gapless and anisotropic dispersion relation which is probed at extremely small energy is experimentally confirmed. Whenever comparison is possible, the results are found quantitatively consistent with those of the inelastic neutron scattering and muon spin rotation and relaxation techniques. Further studies are s…
The nature and effects of the Goldstone mode in the ordered phase of helical or chiral itinerant magnets such as MnSi are investigated theoretically. It is shown that the Goldstone mode, or helimagnon, is a propagating mode with a highly anisotropic dispersion relation, in analogy to the Goldstone mode in chiral liquid crystals. Starting from a microscopic theory, a comprehensive effective theory is developed that allows for an explicit description of the helically ordered phase, including the helimagnons, for both classical and quantum helimagnets. The directly observable dynamical spin susce…
A magnetic helix realizes a one-dimensional magnetic crystal with a period given by the pitch length $λ_h$. Its spin-wave excitations -- the helimagnons -- experience Bragg scattering off this periodicity leading to gaps in the spectrum that inhibit their propagation along the pitch direction. Using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering the resulting band structure of helimagnons was resolved by preparing a single crystal of MnSi in a single magnetic-helix domain. At least five helimagnon bands could be identified that cover the crossover from flat bands at low energies with helimagnons…
We apply a recent quasiparticle model for the electronic properties of metallic helimagnets to calculate the transport properties of three-dimensional systems in the helically ordered phase. We focus on the ballistic regime tau^2 T epsilon_F >> 1 at weak disorder (large elastic mean-free time tau) or intermediate temperature. In this regime, we find a leading temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity proportional to T. This is much stronger than either the Fermi-liquid contribution (T^2) or the contribution from helimagnon scattering in the clean limit (T^{5/2}). It is reminiscent …
We study the magnetic excitations of itinerant helimagnets by applying time-resolved optical spectroscopy to Fe0.8Co0.2Si. Optically excited oscillations of the magnetization in the helical state are found to disperse to lower frequency as the applied magnetic field is increased; the fingerprint of collective modes unique to helimagnets, known as helimagnons. The use of time-resolved spectroscopy allows us to address the fundamental magnetic relaxation processes by directly measuring the Gilbert damping, revealing the versatility of spin dynamics in chiral magnets. (*These authors contributed …
It is suggested that marked features of symmetry breaking mechanism and elementary excitations in chiral helimagnet come up as visible effects in electron spin resonance (ESR) profile. Under the magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the helical axis, elementary excitations are respectively described by the helimagnon associated with rotational symmetry breaking and the magnetic kink crystal phonon associated with translational symmetry breaking. We demonstrate how the ESR spectra distinguish these excitations.
The temperature dependence of the manganese magnetic moment and the spin-lattice relaxation rate measured by the muon spin relaxation technique in the magnetically ordered phase of the chiral intermetallic cubic MnSi system are both explained in terms of helimagnon excitations of a localized spin model. The two free parameters characterizing the helimagnon dispersion relation are determined. A combined analysis of the two data sets cannot be achieved using the self-consistent renormalization theory of spin fluctuations which assumes the magnetism of MnSi to arise uniquely from electronic bands…
Spin waves in chiral magnetic materials are strongly influenced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction resulting in intriguing phenomena like non-reciprocal magnon propagation and magnetochiral dichroism. Here, we study the non-reciprocal magnon spectrum of the archetypical chiral magnet MnSi and its evolution as a function of magnetic field covering the field-polarized and conical helix phase. Using inelastic neutron scattering, the magnon energies and their spectral weights are determined quantitatively after deconvolution with the instrumental resolution. In the field-polarized phase the …
Low-energy spin excitations in any long-range ordered magnetic system in the absence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy are gapless Goldstone modes emanating from the ordering wave vectors. In helimagnets, these modes hybridize into the so-called helimagnon excitations. Here we employ neutron spectroscopy supported by theoretical calculations to investigate the magnetic excitation spectrum of the isotropic Heisenberg helimagnet ZnCr2Se4 with a cubic spinel structure, in which spin-3/2 magnetic Cr3+ ions are arranged in a geometrically frustrated pyrochlore sublattice. Apart from the conventional…
The electrical resistivity of several relatively clean metallic ferromagnets, as well as the helimagnet MnSi, is commonly observed to exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures. This behavior, which is found in both ordered and disordered phases, and both near and away from the magnetic transition, remains a major unsolved problem. We derive and discuss three novel mechanisms underlying such behavior that are based on electron scattering mediated by the exchange of (1) ferromagnons or (2) skyrmionic fluctuations, both in conjunction with weak disorder, or (3) helimagnons in clean sy…
Multiple intriguing low temperature phenomena have recently been discovered in the family of chiral cubic Co-Zn-Mn compounds with $β-$Mn-type structure. In particular, Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ displays a reduction of the helical spiral pitch on cooling, along with lattice shape transformations of metastable skyrmions and the manifestation of peculiar magnetic textures due to strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Here we report on temperature-dependent measurements of helimagnon excitations in the field polarized regime Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ using the spin wave small-angle neutron scattering (SWSANS) te…
We show that the stability (existence/absence) and interaction (repulsion/attraction) of chiral solitons in monoaxial chiral magnets can be varied by tilting the direction of magnetic field. We, thereby, elucidate that the condensation of attractive chiral solitons causes the discontinuous phase transition predicted by a mean field calculation. Furthermore we theoretically demonstrate that the metastable field-polarized-state destabilizes through the surface instability, which is equivalent to the vanishing surface barrier for penetration of the solitons. We experimentally measure the magnetor…
General properties of the chiral scattering of polarized neutrons are considered for two possible axial vector interactions: Zeeman energy and non-alternating Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Behavior in magnetic field of helical magnetic structures is discussed for $Mn Si$ and magneto-electric materials. The dynamical chiral fluctuations in magnetic field are considered briefly. The chiral fluctuations in materials with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are discussed and an assumption is made that above the transition temperature they have to be incommensurate.
Monoaxial chiral magnets can form a peculiar noncollinear spin structure called the chiral soliton lattice in an applied magnetic field perpendicular to the helical axis. We study magnetic properties and electrical transport in the chiral soliton lattice by a Monte Carlo simulation for a one-dimensional Kondo lattice model including the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between classical localized spins. We show that the model exhibits a helical spin structure at a zero magnetic field, which turns into the chiral soliton lattice, and finally, to a forced ferromagnetic state with increasing the…
Chiral nematic liquid crystals sometimes form blue phases characterized by spirals twisting in different directions. By combining model calculations with neutron-scattering experiments, we show that the magnetic analogue of blue phases does form in the chiral itinerant magnet MnSi in a large part of the phase diagram. The properties of this blue phase explain a number of previously reported puzzling features of MnSi such as partial magnetic order and a two-component specific-heat and thermal-expansion anomaly at the magnetic transition.
We review the concept of chirality, at first briefly in a general context then in the specific framework of the spin networks. We next discuss to what extent neutron scattering appears as an unconvertible tool to probe magnetic chirality in the static and dynamical regimes of the spins. The remarkable chiral ground state and excitations of the Fe-langasite compound finally serves to illustrate the use of neutron polarimetry in the experimental studies of the magnetic chirality.
We propose a new mechanism of nonlinear nonreciprocal transport in magnetic systems. By considering a noncoplanar magnetic ordering on a bilayer triangular lattice, we clarify that a local scalar chirality degree of freedom is a source of nonreciprocal transport, which does not require any relativistic spin-orbit coupling, net scalar chirality, and net magnetization. We show a close relationship between the asymmetric band modulation and the nonreciprocal transport under the noncoplanar magnetic ordering based on the model-parameter dependences in the real-space picture.
Monoaxial chiral magnets exhibit a chiral conical magnetic state in a magnetic field parallel to the chiral axis. The conical spins carry the potential for nonreciprocal transport phenomena, as they break both spatial inversion and time reversal symmetries. Here we study the spin-dependent transport in the chiral conical magnetic state, using the Landauer method based on Green's functions for a one-dimensional Kondo lattice model. We show that the system exhibits nonreciprocal spin transport, which depends on the chirality, period, cone angle, and the polarization of the spin current. In parti…
Magnetic helices and skyrmions in noncentrosymmetric magnets are representative examples of chiral spin textures in solids. Their spin swirling direction, often termed as the magnetic helicity and defined as either left-handed or right-handed, is uniquely determined by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in fixed chirality host crystals. Thus far, there have been relatively few investigations of the DMI in metallic magnets as compared with insulating counterparts. Here, we focus on the metallic magnets Co$_{8-x}$Fe$_x$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 4.5) with a $β$-Mn-type chiral str…
Frustration can introduce more-than-two minima in a spin dispersion relation even in a fully polarized magnet under high magnetic field. We generally discuss, on the fully polarized phase, the possibility of the chiral symmetry breaking where the number of magnons pumped by finite temperature deviates to one side of minima. We study this phase by constructing the Ginzburg-Landau energy which is controlled by the external magnetic field and interactions between magnons near the dispersion minima. This chirality breaking phase accompanies, not a magnetization perpendicular to the external field,…
Chirality of matter can produce unique responses in optics, electricity and magnetism. In particular, magnetic crystals transmit their handedness to the magnetism via antisymmetric exchange interaction of relativistic origin, producing helical spin orders as well as their fluctuations. Here we report for a chiral magnet MnSi that chiral spin fluctuations manifest themselves in the electrical magnetochiral effect (eMChE), i.e. the nonreciprocal and nonlinear response characterized by the electrical conductance depending on inner product of electric and magnetic fields $\boldsymbol{E} \cdot \bol…
In this Letter, we study the magnetic transport in AA-stacked bilayer honeycomb chiral magnets coupled either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically. For both couplings, we observe chirality-induced gaps, chiral protected edge states, magnon Hall and magnon spin Nernst effects of magnetic spin excitations. For ferromagnetically coupled layers, thermal Hall and spin Nernst conductivities do not change sign as function of magnetic field or temperature similar to single-layer honeycomb ferromagnetic insulator. In contrast, for antiferromagnetically coupled layers, we observe a sign change in …
Chiral magnets are magnetically ordered insulators having spin scalar chirality, and magnons of chiral magnets have been poorly understood. We study the magnon dispersion and specific heat for four chiral magnets with Q=0 on the pyrochlore lattice. This study is based on the linear-spin-wave approximation for the S=1/2 effective Hamiltonian consisting of two kinds of Heisenberg interaction and two kinds of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. We show that the three-in-one-out type chiral magnets possess an optical branch of the magnon dispersion near q=0, in addition to three quasiacoustic branch…
The B20 chiral magnets with broken inversion symmetry and C4 rotation symmetry have attracted much attention. The broken inversion symmetry leads to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya that gives rise to the helical and Skyrmion states. We report the unusual magnetoresistance (MR) of B20 chiral magnet Fe0.85Co0.15Si that directly reveals the broken C4 rotation symmetry. We present a microscopic theory, a minimal theory with two spin-orbit terms, that satisfies all the symmetry requirements and accounts for the transport experiments.
Magnetoelectric effects in the chiral magnet CsCuCl$_3$ have been investigated through the magnetization and electric polarization measurements in pulsed high magnetic fields. If the magnetic field is applied normal to the spin chiral c-axis, a plateau and a jump in magnetization are observed. Between the plateau and the jump in magnetization, a small but significant electric polarization of about 0.25 μC/m$^2$ along the a-axis is observed with the field applied almost perpendicular to the ac-plane. In addition, the paramagnetoelectric effect expected from the point group symmetry is confirmed…
Search of chiral magnetic solitons on the basis of the data on the crystal structure is important from both fundamental and technological points of view. Potential chiral magnetic solitons - hexagonal metal formates [NH4][M(HCOO)3] with M2+ = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni and KCo(HCOO)3 containing dominating left-handed chiral antiferromagnetic helices that compete with interhelix interactions have been identified. The sign and strength of magnetic interactions not only between nearest neighbors, but also for longer-range neighbors in the metal formates have been calculated on the basis of structural dat…
Axisymmetric magnetic strings with a fixed sense of rotation and nanometer sizes (chiral magnetic vortices or Skyrmions) have been predicted to exist in a large group of non-centrosymmetric crystals more than two decades ago. Recently these extraordinary magnetic states have been directly observed in thin layers of cubic helimagnet (Fe,Co)Si. In this report we apply our earlier theoretical findings to review main properties of chiral Skyrmions, to elucidate their physical nature, and to analyse these recent experimental results on magnetic-field-driven evolution of Skyrmions and helicoids in c…
We introduce a new mechanism for the chiral magnetic effect that does not require an initial chirality imbalance. The chiral magnetic current is generated by reconnections of magnetic flux that change the magnetic helicity of the system. The resulting current is entirely determined by the change of magnetic helicity, and it is quantized.
We report on a mean-field study of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry for Dirac fermions with contact interactions in the presence of chiral imbalance, which is modelled by nonzero chiral chemical potential. We point out that chiral imbalance lowers the vacuum energy of Dirac fermions, which leads to the increase of the renormalized chiral chemical potential upon chiral symmetry breaking. The critical coupling strength for the transition to the broken phase is slightly lowered as the chiral chemical potential is increased, and the transition itself becomes milder. Furthermore, we study th…
Using a model Hamiltonian approach including electron-electron interactions, we systematically investigate the electronic structure and magnetic properties of chiral graphene nanoribbons. We show that the presence of magnetic edge states is an intrinsic feature of smooth graphene nanoribbons with chiral edges, and discover a number of structure-property relations. Specifically, we study the dependence of magnetic moments and edge-state energy splittings on the nanoribbon width and chiral angle as well as the role of environmental screening effects. Our results address a recent experimental obs…
We report on the mean-field study of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in static magnetic fields within a simple model of a parity-breaking Weyl semimetal given by the lattice Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian with constant chiral chemical potential. We consider both the mean-field renormalization of the model parameters and nontrivial corrections to the CME originating from re-summed ladder diagrams with arbitrary number of loops. We find that on-site repulsive interactions affect the chiral magnetic conductivity almost exclusively through the enhancement of the renormalized chiral chemical potential. …
We analyze the combined effects of hydrodynamic fluctuations and chiral magnetic effect (CME) for a chiral medium in the presence of a background magnetic field. Based on the recently developed non-equilibrium effective field theory, we show fluctuations give rise to a CME-related positive contribution to magnetoresistance, while the early studies without accounting for the fluctuations find a CME-related negative magnetoresistance. At zero axial relaxation rate, the fluctuations contribute to the transverse conductivity in addition to the longitudinal one.
It depends: While we find within holography that the lifetime of the magnetic field for collider energies like the ones achieved at RHIC is long enough to build up the chiral magnetic current, the lifetime of the magnetic field at LHC seems to be too short. We study the real time evolution of the chiral magnetic effect out-of-equilibrium in strongly coupled holographic gauge theories. We consider the backreaction of the magnetic field onto the geometry and monitor pressure and chiral magnetic current. Our findings show that generically at small magnetic field the pressure builds up faster than…
