Context. Outflows powered by the injection of kinetic energy from massive stars can strongly affect the chemical evolution of galaxies, in particular of dwarf galaxies, as their lower gravitational potentials enhance the chance of a galactic wind.
Aims. We therefore performed a detailed kinematic analysis of the neutral and ionised gas components in the nearby star-forming irregular dwarf galaxy NGC 4861. Similar to a recently published study of NGC 2366, we want to make predictions about the fate of the gas and to discuss some general issues about this galaxy.
Methods. Fabry-Perot interferometric data centred on the Halpha line were obtained with the 1.93m telescope at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence. They were complemented by HI synthesis data from the VLA. We performed a Gaussian decomposition of both the Halpha and the HI emission lines in order to search for multiple components indicating outflowing gas. The expansion velocities of the detected outflows were compared to the escape velocity of NGC 4861, which was modelled with a pseudo-isothermal halo.
Results. Both in Halpha and HI the galaxy shows several outflows, three directly connected to the disc and probably forming the edges of a supergiant shell, and one at kpc-distance from the disc. We measured velocity offsets of 20 to 30 km/s, which are low in comparison to the escape velocity of the galaxy and therefore minimise the chance of a galactic wind.
It has been suggested that diffuse ionized gas can extend all the way to the end of the HI disc, and even beyond, such as in the case of the warped galaxy NGC 253 (Bland-Hawthorn et al. 1997). Detecting ionized gas at these radii could carry significant implications as to the distribution of dark matter in galaxies. With the aim of detecting this gas, we carried out a deep Halpha kinematical analysis of two Sculptor group galaxies, NGC 247 and NGC 300. The Fabry-Perot data were taken at the 36-cm Marseille Telescope in La Silla, Chile, offering a large field of view. With almost 20 hours of ob…
We performed observations of NGC1569 for 6 infrared bands (3.2, 4.1, 7, 11, 15, and 24 micron) with the Infrared Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. Near- to mid-infrared (2--13 micron) spectroscopy of a Halpha filament was also carried out with the IRC. The extended structure associated with a Halpha filament appears bright at 7 micron, suggesting that the filament is bright at the UIR band emission. Follow-up spectroscopic observations with the IRC confirm the presence of 6.2, 7.7, and 11.3 micron emission in the filament. The filament spectrum exhibits strong 11.3 micron UIR band emission relative …
We have used the images from the ACS on HST in Halpha, and in the neighboring continuum, to produce flux calibrated images of the large spiral galaxy M51, and the dwarf irregular NGC 4449. From these images we have derived the absolute luminosities in Halpha, the areas, and the positions with respect to the galactic centers as reference points, of over 2600 HII regions in M51 and over 270 HII regions in NGC 4449. Using this database we have derived luminosity (L)--volume (V) relations for the regions in the two galaxies, showing that within the error limits these obey the equation L ~ V^(2/3),…
NGC 2903 is a nearby barred spiral with an active starburst in the center and Hii regions distributed along its bar. We aim to analyse the star formation properties in the bar region of NGC 2903 and study the links with the typical bar morphological features. A combination of space and ground-based data from the far-ultraviolet to the sub-millimeter spectral ranges is used to create a panchromatic view of the NGC 2903 bar. We produce two catalogues: one for the current star formation regions, as traced by the halpha compact emission, and a second one for the ultraviolet (UV) emitting knots, co…
Far ultraviolet emission has been detected from a knot of Halpha emission in the Horseshoe filament, far out in the NGC 1275 nebula. The flux detected relative to the brightness of the Halpha line in the same spatial region is very close to that expected from Hydrogen two-photon continuum emission in the particle heating model of Ferland et al. (2009) if reddening internal to the filaments is taken into account. We find no need to invoke other sources of far ultraviolet emission such as hot stars or emission lines from CIV in intermediate temperature gas to explain these data.
We present the analysis of the galaxy structural parameters from Halpha3, an Halpha narrow-band imaging follow-up survey of ~800 galaxies selected from the HI ALFALFA Survey in the Local and Coma Superclusters. Taking advantage of Halpha3 which provides the complete census of the recent star-forming, HI-rich galaxies in the local universe, we aim to investigate the structural parameters of both the young (<10 Myr) and the old (>1 Gyr) stellar populations. By comparing the sizes of these stellar components we investigated the spatial scale on which galaxies are growing at the present cosmologic…
NGC3367 is a nearby isolated active galaxy that shows a radio jet, a strong bar and evidence of lopsidedness. We present a quantitative analysis of the stellar and gaseous structure of the galaxy disk and a search for evidence of recent interaction based on new UBVRI Halpha and JHK images and on archival Halpha Fabry-Perot and HI VLA data. From a coupled 1D/2D GALFIT bulge/bar/disk decomposition an (B/D ~ 0.07-0.1) exponential pseudobulge is inferred in all the observed bands. A NIR estimate of the bar strength <Q_T{max}(R)> = 0.44 places NGC 3367 bar among the strongest ones. The asymmetry pr…
Using the Tremaine-Weinberg method, we measure the speed of the HI bar seen in the disk of NGC 3741. NGC 3741 is an extremely gas rich galaxy with an {H\,{\sc i}} disk which extends to about 8.3 times its Holmberg radius. It is also highly dark matter-dominated. Our calculated value of the pattern speed $Ω_p$ is 17.1 $\pm$ 3.4 km $\textrm{s}^{-1}\textrm{kpc}^{-1}$. We also find the ratio of the co-rotation radius to the bar semi-major axis to be (1.6 $\pm$ 0.3), indicating a slow bar. This is consistent with bar models in which dynamical friction results in a slow bar in dark matter dominated …
Archival Chandra observations are used to study the X-ray emission associated with star formation in the central region of the nearby SAB(s)cd galaxy NGC 2403. The distribution of X-ray emission is compared to the morphology visible at other wavelengths using complementary Spitzer, GALEX, and ground-based Halpha imagery. In general, the brightest extended X-ray emission is associated with HII regions and to other star-forming structures but is more pervasive; existing also in regions devoid of strong Halpha and UV emission. This X-ray emission has the spectral properties of diffuse hot gas (kT…
We exploit the vastly increased sensitivity of the Expanded Very Large Array (EVLA) to study the radio continuum and polarization properties of the post-starburst, dwarf irregular galaxy IC10 at 6 cm, at a linear resolution of ~50 pc. We find close agreement between radio continuum and Halpha emission, from the brightest HII regions to the weaker emission in the disk. A quantitative analysis shows a strictly linear correlation, where the thermal component contributes 50% to the total radio emission, the remainder being due to a non-thermal component with a surprisingly steep radio spectral ind…
[abridged] We present optical integral field unit observations (VLT/VIMOS-IFU and WIYN/SparsePak), and associated archival deep Halpha imaging (ESO 2.2m WFI), of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253. With VIMOS we observed the nuclear region and southern superwind outflow in detail with five pointings, and with SparsePak we observed two partially overlapping regions covering the central disk and northern halo. The high signal-to-noise of the data and spectral resolution (80-90 km/s) enable us to accurately decompose the emission line profiles into multiple components. The combination of these da…
High-spatial resolution near-infrared (NIR) images of the central 24 x 24 arcsec^2 (~ 2 x 2 kpc^2) of the elliptical galaxy NGC 1052 reveal a total of 25 compact sources randomly distributed in the region. Fifteen of them exhibit Halpha luminosities an order of magnitude above the estimate for an evolved population of extreme horizontal branch stars. Their Halpha equivalent widths and optical-to-NIR spectral energy distributions are consistent with them being young stellar clusters aged < 7 Myr. We consider this to be the first direct observation of spatially resolved star-forming regions in t…
We present a photometric estimation of the distance and reddening values to the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 1156, which is one of the best targets to study the isolated dwarf galaxies in the nearby universe. We have used the imaging data sets of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) High Resolution Channel (HRC) of the central region of NGC 1156 (26" X 29") available in the HST archive for this study. From the (U-B, B-V) color-color diagram, we first estimate the total (foreground + internal) reddening toward NGC 1156 of E(B-V) =0.35 +/- 0.05 mag, whereas only the f…
We have extended our previous observation (Lim et al. 2008) of NGC1275 covering a central radius of ~10kpc to the entire main body of cool molecular gas spanning ~14kpc east and west of center. We find no new features beyond the region previously mapped, and show that all six spatially-resolved features on both the eastern and western sides (three on each side) comprise radially aligned filaments. Such radial filaments can be most naturally explained by a model in which gas deposited "upstream" in localized regions experiencing an X-ray cooling flow subsequently free falls along the gravitatio…
We investigate recent star formation in the extended ultraviolet (XUV) disks of five nearby galaxies (NGC 0628, NGC 2090, NGC 2841, NGC 3621, and NGC 5055) using a long wavelength baseline comprised of ultraviolet and mid-infrared imaging from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer and the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera. We identify 229 unresolved stellar complexes across targeted portions of their XUV disks and utilize spectral energy distribution fitting to measure their stellar ages and masses through comparison with Starburst99 population synthesis models of instantaneous burst populations. We find …
We present a study of the star cluster population in the starburst irregular galaxy NGC 4449 based on B, V, I, and Ha images taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. We derive the cluster properties such as size, ellipticity, and total magnitudes. Cluster ages and masses are derived fitting the observed spectral energy distributions with different population synthesis models. Our analysis is strongly affected by the age-metallicity degeneracy; however, if we assume a metallicity of ~1/4 solar, as derived from spectroscopy of HII regions, we find that the cluste…
We present the first detection of CO emission lines in the Halpha filaments at distances as far as 50 kpc from the centre of the galaxy NGC 1275. This gas is probably dense (>=10E3 cm-3). However, it is not possible to accurately determine the density and the kinetic temperature of this relatively warm gas (Tkin~20-500K) with the current data only. The amount of molecular gas in the filaments is large 10E9 Msun (assuming a Galactic N(H2)/Ico ratio). This is 10% of the total mass of molecular gas detected in this cD galaxy. This gas has large-scale velocities comparable to those seen in Halpha.…
We aim to derive the chemical behavior of a significant sample of PNe and HII regions in the irregular galaxy NGC 6822 The selected objects are distributed in different zones of the galaxy. Due to the faintness of PNe and HII regions in NGC 6822, to gather spectroscopic data with large telescopes is necessary. We obtained a well suited sample of spectra by employing VLT-FORS 2 and Gemini-GMOS spectrographs. Ionic and total abundances are calculated for the objects where electron temperatures can be determined through the detection of [OIII] λ4363 or/and [NII] λ5755 lines. A "simple" chemical e…
We used the near-IR imager/spectrograph LUCIFER mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) to image, with sub-arcsec seeing, the local dwarf starburst NGC 1569 in the JHK bands and HeI 1.08 micron, [FeII] 1.64 micron and Brgamma narrow-band filters. We obtained high-quality spatial maps of HeI, [FeII] and Brgamma emission across the galaxy, and used them together with HST/ACS images of NGC 1569 in the Halpha filter to derive the two-dimensional spatial map of the dust extinction and surface star formation rate density. We show that dust extinction is rather patchy and, on average, higher i…
On the basis of a new photometric analysis of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NCG 6822 based on observations obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we have obtained a new estimate of the extinction of two fields located in the southeast region of the galaxy. Because of significant differences in the distance estimates to NGC 6822 available in literature, we decided to provide an independent determination of the distance to this galaxy based on an updated and self-consistent theoretical calibration of the tip of the red giant branch brightness. …
Abridged. The feedback between massive stars and the interstellar medium is one of the most important processes in the evolution of dwarf galaxies. This interaction results in numerous neutral and ionised gas structures that have been found both in the disc and in the halo of these galaxies. However, their origin and fate are still poorly understood. We here present new HI and optical data of two nearby irregular dwarf galaxies: IC 4662 and NGC 5408. The HI line data were obtained with the ATCA and are part of the Local Volume HI Survey. They are complemented by optical images and spectroscopi…
We present results from two \sim30 ks Chandra observations of the hot atmospheres of the merging galaxy groups centered around NGC 7618 and UGC 12491. Our images show the presence of arc-like sloshing cold fronts wrapped around each group center and \sim100 kpc long spiral tails in both groups. Most interestingly, the cold fronts are highly distorted in both groups, exhibiting 'wings' along the fronts. These features resemble the structures predicted from non-viscous hydrodynamic simulations of gas sloshing, where Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHIs) distort the cold fronts. This is in contra…
We present results from our Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI, Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) Halpha, 1m Sampurnanand Telescope (ST) and 1.3m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope (DFOT) deep optical observations of NGC 7805/6 (Arp 112) system to test KUG 2359+311's tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidacy and explore the properties of the interacting system. Our GMRT HI map shows no HI detection associated with KUG 2359+311, nor any HI tail or bridge-like structure connecting KUG 2359+311 to the NGC 7805/6 system. Our HCT Halpha image on the other hand, shows strong detections in KUG 2359+311…
We present GMRT 1280 MHz radio continuum observations and follow-up optical studies of the disk and nuclear star formation in a sample of low luminosity bulgeless galaxies. The main aim is to understand bulge formation and overall disk evolution in these late type galaxies. We detected radio continuum from five of the twelve galaxies in our sample; the emission is mainly associated with disk star formation. Only two of the detected galaxies had extended radio emission; the others had patchy disk emission. In the former two galaxies, NGC3445 and NGC4027, the radio continuum is associated with s…
We report the discovery of a new dwarf galaxy (NGC6503-d1) during the Subaru extended ultraviolet (XUV) disk survey. It is a likely companion of the spiral galaxy NGC6503. The resolved images, in B, V, R, i, and Halpha, show an irregular appearance due to bright stars with underlying, smooth and unresolved stellar emission. It is classified as the transition type (dIrr/dSph). Its structural properties are similar to those of the dwarfs in the Local Group, with a V absolute magnitude ~ -10.5, half-light radius ~400 pc, and central surface brightness ~25.2. Despite the low stellar surface bright…
Numerical simulations of minor mergers, typically having mass ratios greater than 3:1, predict little enhancement in the global star formation activity. However, these models also predict that the satellite galaxy is more susceptible to the effects of the interaction than the primary. We use optical integral field spectroscopy and deep optical imaging to study the NGC7771+NGC7770 interacting system (~10:1 stellar mass ratio) to test these predictions. We find that the satellite galaxy NGC7770 is currently experiencing a galaxy-wide starburst with most of the optical light being from young and …
We studied the star cluster population properties in the nearby collisional ring galaxy NGC 922 using HST/WFPC2 photometry and population synthesis modeling. We found that 69% of the detected clusters are younger than 7 Myr, and that most of them are located in the ring or along the bar, consistent with the strong Halpha emission. The images also show a tidal plume pointing toward the companion. Its stellar age is consistent with pre-existing stars that were probably stripped off during the passage of the companion. We compared the star-forming complexes observed in NGC 922 with those of a dis…
We survey four nearby irregular galaxies for radio supernova remnants (SNRs) using deep (1 sigma ~ 20 microJy), high resolution (~20 pc) VLA continuum data at 20, 6, and 3.6 cm. We identify discrete sources in these galaxies and use radio spectral indices and H alpha images to categorize them as SNRs, H II regions, or background radio galaxies. Our classifications are generally in good agreement agreement with the literature. We identify a total of 43 SNR candidates: 23 in NGC 1569, 7 in NGC 4214, 5 in NGC 2366, and 8 in NGC 4449. Only one SNR--the well-studied object J1228+441 in NGC 4449--is…
It has been shown that the Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4330 shows signs of ongoing ram pressure stripping in multiple wavelengths: at the leading edge of the interaction, the Halpha and dust extinction curve sharply out of the disk; on the trailing side, a long Halpha/UV tail has been found which is located upwind of a long HI tail. We complete the multiwavelength study with IRAM 30m HERA CO(2-1) and VLA 6 cm radio continuum observations of NGC 4330. The data are interpreted with the help of a dynamical model including ram pressure and, for the first time, star formation. Our best-fit model reprod…
We present the detection of extremely broad, double-peaked, highly polarized Halpha emission lines in the nuclei of the well-known Seyfert 2 galaxies NGC 2110 and NGC 5252. These hidden broad Halpha emission lines, visible only in scattered light, are shown to display significant variability in strength and profile on timescales of <~ 1 yr. That the broad emission line exhibits variability in polarized flux also suggests that the scattering region must be very compact, possibly confined in a small number of electron clouds <~ 1 lt-yr in size. Our observational constraints place these clouds wi…
(abridged) NGC 1569 is a nearby dwarf irregular galaxy which underwent an intense burst of star formation 10 to 40 Myr ago. We present observations that reach surface brightnesses two to eighty times fainter than previous radio continuum observations and the first radio continuum polarization observations. These observations allow us to probe the relationship of the magnetic field of NGC 1569 to the rest of its interstellar medium. We confirm the presence of an extended radio continuum halo at 20 cm and see for the first time the radio continuum feature associated with the western Halpha arm a…
We present the results from an analysis of deep Herschel far-infrared observations of the edge-on disk galaxy NGC 3079. The PSF-cleaned PACS images at 100 and 160 um display a 25 kpc x 25 kpc X-shape structure centered on the nucleus that is similar in extent and orientation to that seen in Halpha, X-rays, and the far-ultraviolet. One of the dusty filaments making up this structure is detected in the SPIRE 250 um map out to ~25 kpc from the nucleus. The match between the far-infrared filaments and those detected at other wavelengths suggests that the dusty material has been lifted out of the d…
We present results from a study of the Supernova Remnant (SNR) population in a sample of six nearby galaxies (NGC 2403, NGC 3077, NGC 4214, NGC 4449, NGC 4395 and NGC 5204) based on Chandra archival data. We have detected 244 discrete X-ray sources down to a limiting flux of 10^{-15} erg/s. We identify 37 X-ray selected thermal SNRs based on their X-ray colors or spectra, 30 of which are new discoveries. In many cases the X-ray classification is confirmed based on counterparts with SNRs identified in other wavelengths. Three of the galaxies in our sample (NGC 4214, NGC 4395 and NGC 5204) are s…
