We study the transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA), A_N, for the single inclusive process l p (transv. polarized) --> h + X, in a perturbative QCD factorization scheme with inclusion of spin and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions. By adopting the relevant TMDs (Sivers and Collins functions) as extracted from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and e+e- data, predictions for these SSAs are given. A measurement of A_N for this process could then provide a direct test of the validity of the TMD factorization.
We investigate the single-spin asymmetries in inclusive and exclusive processes of electron-proton scattering and electron-positron annihilation. In the decomposition of hadronic tensor, a Lorentz symmetric spin-dependent term is generally present. The existence of such a term implies single-spin asymmetries in these processes and these single-spin asymmetries for baryons can be understood in a unified manner. We argue that it is important to measure the single-spin asymmetries in both inclusive and exclusive processes for the $Λ$ production at the present B-factories. This will lead to the fi…
We discuss a nonperturbative mechanism for generation of the single-spin asymmetries in hadron interactions. It is based on the chiral quark model combined with unitarity and impact parameter picture and provides explanation for the experimental regularities observed under the measurements of the spin asymmetries.
We consider theoretical background for experimental measurements of single-spin asymmetries. We stress the non-perturbative QCD aspects of observed asymmetries in hadronic reactions.
In this PhD-thesis effects from intrinsic transverse momentum are studied in several hard scattering processes with an emphasis on color gauge invariance. The thesis is intended for beginning PhD-students as well as for the experts.
We study double spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes in which one initial hadron is transversely polarized and another one is longitudinally polarized. The complete part of the hadronic tensor relevant to asymmetries is derived. This part consists of twist-2 and twist-3 parton distributions and is gauge invariant. We construct some observables which can be used to extract these parton distributions from experimental measurements.
It is pointed out that the existing models for the left-right asymmetries observed in single-spin inclusive hadron production processes can be differentiated experimentally. Several such experiments are proposed with which the basic assumptions of these models can be tested individually.
Starting from rotational invariance we derive sum rules for the single-spin asymmetries in inclusive production and binary processes. We also get sum rules for spin correlation parameters in elastic pp-scattering.
Processes of electron-positron annihilation into a pair of fermions were considered. Forward-backward and left-right asymmetries were studied, taking into account polarization of initial and final particles. Complete 1-loop electroweak radiative corrections were included. A wide energy range including the $Z$ boson peak and higher energies relevant for future $e^+e^-$ colliders was covered. Sensitivity of observable asymmetries to the electroweak mixing angle and fermion weak coupling was discussed.
We consider several single spin asymmetries in inclusive, transversely polarized proton(antiproton) - proton processes as higher twist QCD contributions, taking into account spin and intrinsic transverse momentum effects in the quark distribution functions. This approach has been previously applied to the description of the single spin asymmetries observed in transversely polarized proton - proton -> pion + X reactions and all its parameters fixed: we give here predictions for new processes, which agree with experiments for which data are available, and suggest further possible measurements.
Transverse single spin asymmetries can be a challenging tool in our understanding of the internal structure of hadrons. Some aspects and recent results are discussed.
Some nonperturbative aspects of spin studies at RHIC are discussed and the predictions for single- and two-spin asymmetries are given. Among them are those which emphasize the role of angular orbital momentum in the spin structure of the constituent quarks.
We discuss a nonperturbative mechanism for one-spin asymmetries in inclusive hadron production. The main role in generation of this asymmetry belongs to the orbital angular momentum of quark-antiquark cloud in internal structure of constituent quarks.
A phenomenological description of single transverse spin asymmetries for the inclusive production of hadrons in proton-proton and lepton-proton processes is discussed within pQCD and a straightforward generalization of the factorization theorem with the inclusion of parton intrinsic transverse motion. Fits to existing data, predictions for new processes and interpretation of recent results are presented.
We study Pomeron-Odderon interference effects giving rise to charge and single-spin asymmetries in diffractive electroproduction of a $π^+ π^-$ pair. We calculate these asymmetries in the Born approximation of QCD in a kinematical domain accessible to HERA experiments.
We analyze single transverse-spin asymmetries for hadronic pion production at large transverse momenta using QCD factorization. In the large $x_F$ region, leading contributions to the asymmetries are naturally produced by twist-3 parton correlation functions that couple quark fields and gluon field strengths. With a simple model for these matrix elements, leading-order asymmetries calculated from QCD are consistent with data on pion production from Fermilab, and can be used to predict single-spin asymmetries at RHIC. We argue that our perturbative calculation for the asymmetries is relevant to…
We present next-to-leading order predictions for double transverse-spin asymmetries in Drell--Yan dilepton production initiated by proton--antiproton scattering. The kinematic region of the proposed PAX experiment at GSI: $30\lesssim{s}\lesssim200\GeV^2$ and $2\lesssim{M}\lesssim7\GeV$ is examined. The Drell--Yan asymmetries turn out to be large, in the range 20--40%. Measuring these asymmetries would provide the cleanest determination of the quark transversity distributions.
We demonstrate that electric dipole moments (EDMs) strongly constrain possible SUSY contributions to the CP asymmetries of B processes; LL and/or RR flavour mixings between second and third generations are severely restricted by the experimental limit on the mercury EDM, and so therefore are their possible contributions to the CP asymmetries of B --> ϕK and B --> η' K. We find that SUSY models with dominant LR and RL mixing through non-universal A-terms is the only way to accommodate the apparent deviation of CP asymmetries from those expected in the Standard Model without conflicting with the…
The Sivers and Collins asymmetries are the most interesting Single Spin Asymmetries in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering with transverse target polarization. In this talk we present our understanding of these phenomena.
Characteristics of the available data are briefly summarized. Different theoretical approaches are reviewed with special attention to a non-perturbative model which explicitly takes the orbital motion of the valence quarks into account. The connection between such asymmetries and hyperon polarization in unpolarized reactions is discussed.
We examine the spin-dependence of standard model Higgs boson production at large transverse momentum via the processes $gg \rightarrow gH^0$, $qg \rightarrow qH^0$, and $q\overline{q} \rightarrow gH^0$. The partonic level spin-spin asymmetries ($\hat{a}_{LL}$) for these processes are large at SSC/LHC energies.
We study the single longitudinal-spin asymmetries in lepton-pair production with large transverse-momentum at RHIC and J-PARC experiments. The asymmetries in the azimuthal angular distribution of a lepton can arise from an absorptive part of production amplitudes. We revisit the one-loop calculation for the absorptive part of production amplitudes in perturbative QCD, and show that the asymmetries can be sizable at RHIC and J-PARC. Measurement of the asymmetries would test the one-loop prediction for the scattering phase of this process, and provide support for a study of the single transverse…
We show that energetically favored meson-baryon fluctuations present in the light-cone wave function of a transversely polarized proton can account for the left-right asymmetries measured in inclusive meson production processes.
We study single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with transversely polarized target. Based on the QCD factorization approach, we consider Sivers and Collins contributions to the asymmetries. We fit simple parameterizations for the Sivers and Collins functions to the recent HERMES data, and compare to results from COMPASS. Using the fitted parameterizations for the Sivers functions, we predict the single transverse spin asymmetries for various processes in $pp$ collisions at RHIC, including the Drell-Yan process and angular correlations in dijet and jet-plus-photon p…
We calculate the double-spin transverse asymmetries for the Drell-Yan lepton pair production in p-p and p-anti p collisions. We assume the transverse and the longitudinal polarization densities to be equal at a very small scale, as it is suggested by confinement model results. Using a global fit for the longitudinal distributions, we find transverse asymmetries of order of 10^-2 at most, in the accessible kinematic regions.
We investigate the pattern of asymmetries in the colour-octet model for inclusive production of charmonium with polarised initial state hadrons and photons. We find that singly polarised asymmetries vanish. The double polarised asymmetry for J/psi involves a new combination of long-distance matrix element. We also investigate the asymmetries for eta_c, chi_c and Upsilon production. The asymmetries distinguish well between different models of charmonium production.
We compute nuclear spin dependent structure functions using a dynamical model for bound nucleon densities and hence calculate nuclear modifications to asymmetries observed in recent doubly polarised deep inelastic scattering experiments. We conclude that while the individual densities are changed substantially by nuclear effects, the asymmetries themselves are largely insensitive to these changes.
The polarized antiquark distributions in the proton can be measured by studying spin asymmetries in vector boson production in longitudinally polarized proton-proton collisions. The STAR and PHENIX experiments at BNL RHIC have reported first observations of single spin asymmetries in $W^\pm$-production most recently. We compute the QCD corrections to single and double spin asymmetries, taking account of the leptonic decay of the $W^\pm$ boson and of restrictions on the kinematical acceptance of the detectors. The QCD corrections have only a small impact on the asymmetries, such that a reliable…
We present calculations of cross sections and spin asymmetries in single-inclusive reactions in pp scattering. We discuss next-to-leading order predictions as well as all-order soft-gluon threshold resummations.
The physics case is summarised for the investigation of high energy spin phenomena by placing an internal polarised target into HERA's unpolarised proton beam. The luminosity and experimental sensitivity are discussed. Estimating the physics reach of single spin asymmetries in different final states reveals a considerable physics potential in testing the spin sector of perturbative QCD.
Parity-violating asymmetries in polarized electron scattering have been interpreted as the asymmetries between opposite helicities of incoming fermion based on the approximation of the spin polarization operator. Here exact calculations of cross sections for parity-violating asymmetries in SLAC E158 and SLD have been performed using spin projection operators. And the parity-violating factor incorporating with spin polarization and momentum has been identified and shown that its sign depends on the spin polarization of incoming particle and the relative velocity of incoming and target particles…
We will give convincing arguments to view transverse spin asymmetries in inclusive reactions, as very exciting observables, although there were considered as irrelevant for a long time. We look forward to new high energy data in the near future.
The main properties of the leading-twist transverse momentum dependent parton distributions in a light-cone constituent quark model of the nucleon are reviewed, with focus on the role of the spin-spin and spin-orbit correlations of quarks. Results for azimuthal single spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering are also discussed.
The Sivers and Collins asymmetries are the most prominent Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA)in Semi-Inclusive Deeply Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS)with transverse target polarization. In this talk we present our understanding of these phenomena.
We consider two different spin asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes generated by the collisions of an unpolarized proton beam on transversely polarized protons: the muon helicity asymmetry and the left-right asymmetry. We calculate the asymmetries in the framework of the QCD improved parton model, taking into account the parton transverse momentum and considering the first order QCD corrections. The muon helicity asymmetry is sensitive to the quark transversity distribution and is nonvanishing even at zero order. On the contrary the left-right asymmetry vanishes at zero order but not at first or…
We discuss the use of time reversal symmetry in the classification of parton correlators. Specifically, we consider the role of (small) intrinsic transverse momenta in these correlators and the determination of the proper color gauge link. The transverse momentum weighted correlators in hard processes can be expressed as a product of universal gluonic pole matrix elements and gluonic pole cross sections.
We present a technique to calculate the cross sections and spin asymmetries for transversely polarized $pp$ collisions at NLO in QCD and report on the use of this technique for the processes $p^{\uparrow} p^{\uparrow} \to γX$, $p^{\uparrow} p^{\uparrow} \to πX$ and $p^{\uparrow} p^{\uparrow} \to l^+ l^- X$.
The theoretical aspects of two leading twist transversity single spin asymmetries, one arising from the Collins effect and one from the interference fragmentation functions, are reviewed. Issues of factorization, evolution and Sudakov factors for the relevant observables are discussed. These theoretical considerations pinpoint the most realistic scenarios towards measurements of transversity.
In a perturbative QCD approach, with inclusion of spin and transverse momentum effects, experimental data on azimuthal asymmetries observed in polarized semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering and e+ e- annihilations can be used to determine the Sivers, transversity and Collins soft functions. By using these functions, within the same scheme, we predict p(transv. polarized) p -> h + X single spin asymmetries in remarkable agreement with RHIC experimental data.
Using the formalism of two-hadron fragmentation functions, we discuss single-spin asymmetries occurring in the production of two hadrons in the current region of deep inelastic scattering, with a particular emphasis on transversity measurements.
A pedagogical introduction to single-spin asymmetries (SSA's) and transversity is presented. Discussion in some detail is made of certain aspects of (SSA's) in lepton-nucleon and in hadron-hadron scattering and the role of pQCD and evolution in the context of transversity.
We discuss transverse double-spin asymmetries for dimuon production at small transverse-momentum $Q_T$ in $pp$ and $p\bar{p}$ collisions. All order resummation of large logarithms relevant in small $Q_T$ region is performed at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy, and asymmetries at RHIC, J-PARC and GSI are calculated.
We analyze longitudinal beam and target single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and in jet deep inelastic scattering, including all possible twist-3 contributions as well as quark mass corrections. We take into account the path-ordered exponential in the soft correlators and show that it leads to the introduction of a new distribution and a new fragmentation function contributing to the asymmetries.
We consider quark-photon correlations that have been proposed as a source for single-spin asymmetries in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. A new sum rule for these correlators is derived and its phenomenological consequences are discussed. The results are interpreted within the context of an intuitive 'electrodynamic lensing' picture.
We illustrate, in a semi-classical picture, how the Wilson line phase factor in gauge invariantly defined unintegrated parton density can lead to a nonzero single-spin asymmetry (Sivers effect).
We have presented the results for the single and double spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scatterings for proton in a light front quark-diquark model. The asymmetries generated by the T-even TMDs are discussed here. The model predictions are found to agree with the available data. We also present our model predictions for the Collins asymmetry for the future electron-ion collider experiments.
We discuss possible measurements and origins of single spin asymmetries in DIS and of some unusual spin properties of vector mesons produced in lepton- nucleon, photon-nucleon and photon-photon interactions. Such effects have already been observed in other processes.
We argue that through the Wilson lines, gauge invariance has as an effect that the hard functions in weighted spin-asymmetries in hadronic scattering processes are given by gluonic pole cross sections, rather than the usual partonic cross sections.
We show how some parton distribution functions related to the transverse spin of nucleons can be extracted point by point from combinations of proton and deuteron observables. In particular, we present a determination of the valence and sea Sivers functions from the single-spin asymmetries measured by COMPASS.
We show that in the Mclerran-Venugopalan model, an axial asymmetrical valence quark distributions in the transverse plane of a transversely polarized proton can give rise to a spin dependent odderon. Such polarized odderon is responsible for the transverse single spin asymmetries(SSAs) for jet production in the backward region of pp collisions and open charm production in semi-inclusive DIS process.
We consider mechanism for one-spin asymmetries observed in inclusive hadron production. The main role belongs to the orbital angular momentum of the quark-antiquark cloud in the internal structure of constituent quarks. We argue that the origin of the asymmetries in pion production is a result of retaining of this internal angular orbital momentum by the perturbative phase of QCD under transition from the non-perturbative phase. The non-perturbative hadron structure is based on the results of chiral quark models. PACS number(s): 11.30.Qc, 12.40.Pp, 13.75.Ni, 13.88.+e
Single spin asymmetries in polarized proton(antiproton) + proton -> pion + X have been measured to be large. They can be understood within perturbative QCD by introducing new k_perp and spin dependences in fragmentation and/or distribution functions. We discuss first how these effects in distribution functions alone can account for existing data and predict single spin asymmetries in other processes; then we see how similar effects in fragmentation functions alone can fit the existing data; finally we devise strategies to discriminate between the two contributions
Using Drell-Yan pair production as an example, we explore the relation between two well-known mechanisms for single transverse-spin asymmetries in hard processes: twist-three quark-gluon correlations when the pair's transverse momentum is large, $q_\perp \gg Λ_{\rm QCD}$, and time-reversal-odd and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions when $q_\perp$ is much less than the pair's mass. We find that although the two mechanisms have their own domain of validity, they describe the same physics in the kinematic region where they overlap. This unifies the two mechanisms and imposes an im…
We consider possible mechanisms for single spin asymmetries in inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) processes with unpolarized leptons and transversely polarized nucleons. Tests for the effects of non-zero $\bfk_\perp$, for the properties of spin dependent quark fragmentations and for quark helicity conservation are suggested.
Working with a completely collinear twist-3 factorized cross-section formula, we identify two largely dominant partonic sub-processes, which contribute to the single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive pion production, in the region of large pT and medium-large xF.
We study the twist-2 double-spin asymmetries for the 2-jets and large-$p_T$ hadron ($π$, $Λ$ etc) production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering to $O(α_s)$ in perturbative QCD. After deriving the complete set of the polarized cross section which is differential with respect to the transverse momentum, we discuss characteristic features of the azymuthal spin asymmetries, using existing parton densities and fragmentation functions at COMPASS and EIC energies.
We have computed semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for proton and deuteron targets including next to leading order (NLO) QCD corrections and contributions coming from the target fragmentation region. These corrections have been estimated using NLO fragmentation functions, parton distributions and also a model for spin dependent fracture functions which is proposed here. We have found that NLO corrections are small but non-negligible in a scheme where gluons are polarised and that our estimate for target fragmentation effects does not modify significantly charged asymmetries but affects the so ca…
We discuss the target and beam normal spin asymmetries in elastic electron-nucleon scattering which depend on the imaginary part of two-photon exchange processes between electron and nucleon. In particular, we estimate these transverse spin asymmetries for beam energies below 2 GeV, where thetwo-photon exchange process is dominated from the resonance contribution to the doubly virtual Compton scattering tensor on the nucleon.
We discuss the way in which factorisation is partially maintained but nevertheless modified by process-dependent colour factors in hadronic single-spin asymmetries. We also examine QCD evolution of the twist-three gluonic-pole strength defining an effective T-odd Sivers function in the large-x limit, where evolution of the T-even transverse-spin DIS structure function g2 is known to be multiplicative.
Predictions are made for single spin azimuthal asymmetries due to the Collins effect in pion production from semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering off transversely and longitudinally polarized targets for the HERMES and COMPASS experiments. The x-dependence of the asymmetries is evaluated using the parton distribution functions from the chiral quark-soliton model. The overall normalization of the predicted asymmetries is determined by the information on the Collins fragmentation function extracted from previous HERMES data on azimuthal asymmetries from a longitudinally polarized target. T…
