We investigate the use of quasicrystals in image sampling. Quasicrystals produce space-filling, non-periodic point sets that are uniformly discrete and relatively dense, thereby ensuring the sample sites are evenly spread out throughout the sampled image. Their self-similar structure can be attractive for creating sampling patterns endowed with a decorative symmetry. We present a brief general overview of the algebraic theory of cut-and-project quasicrystals based on the geometry of the golden ratio. To assess the practical utility of quasicrystal sampling, we evaluate the visual effects of a variety of non-adaptive image sampling strategies on photorealistic image reconstruction and non-photorealistic image rendering used in multiresolution image representations. For computer visualization of point sets used in image sampling, we introduce a mosaic rendering technique.

In recent years, the performance of novel view synthesis using perspective images has dramatically improved with the advent of neural radiance fields (NeRF). This study proposes two novel techniques that effectively build NeRF for 360{\textdegree} omnidirectional images. Due to the characteristics of a 360{\textdegree} image of ERP format that has spatial distortion in their high latitude regions and a 360{\textdegree} wide viewing angle, NeRF's general ray sampling strategy is ineffective. Hence, the view synthesis accuracy of NeRF is limited and learning is not efficient. We propose two non-…

This paper presents an adaptive image sampling algorithm based on Deep Learning (DL). The adaptive sampling mask generation network is jointly trained with an image inpainting network. The sampling rate is controlled in the mask generation network, and a binarization strategy is investigated to make the sampling mask binary. Besides the image sampling and reconstruction application, we show that the proposed adaptive sampling algorithm is able to speed up raster scan processes such as the X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) image scanning process. Recently XRF laboratory-based systems have evolved to lig…

Deep convolutional neural networks achieve excellent image up-sampling performance. However, CNN-based methods tend to restore high-resolution results highly depending on traditional interpolations (e.g. bicubic). In this paper, we present a deep sampling network (DSN) for down-sampling and up-sampling without any cheap interpolation. First, the down-sampling subnetwork is trained without supervision, thereby preserving more information and producing better visual effects in the low-resolution image. Second, the up-sampling subnetwork learns a sub-pixel residual with dense connections to accel…
The problem of minimization of the number of measurements needed for digital image acquisition and reconstruction with a given accuracy is addressed. Basics of the sampling theory are outlined to show that the lower bound of signal sampling rate sufficient for signal reconstruction with a given accuracy is equal to the spectrum sparsity of the signal sparse approximation that has this accuracy. It is revealed that the compressed sensing approach, which was advanced as a solution to the sampling rate minimization problem, is far from reaching the sampling rate theoretical minimum. Potentials an…
Objects in aerial images have greater variations in scale and orientation than in typical images, so detection is more difficult. Convolutional neural networks use a variety of frequency- and orientation-specific kernels to identify objects subject to different transformations; these require many parameters. Sampling equivariant networks can adjust sampling from input feature maps according to the transformation of the object, allowing a kernel to extract features of an object under different transformations. Doing so requires fewer parameters, and makes the network more suitable for represent…
A problem is addressed of minimization of the number of measurements needed for digital image acquisition and reconstruction with a given accuracy. A sampling theory based method of image sampling and reconstruction is suggested that allows to draw near the minimal rate of image sampling defined by the sampling theory. Presented and discussed are also results of experimental verification of the method and its possible applicability extensions.

This paper presents an approach to fast image registration through probabilistic pixel sampling. We propose a practical scheme to leverage the benefits of two state-of-the-art pixel sampling approaches: gradient magnitude based pixel sampling and uniformly random sampling. Our framework involves learning the optimal balance between the two sampling schemes off-line during training, based on a small training dataset, using particle swarm optimization. We then test the proposed sampling approach on 3D rigid registration against two state-of-the-art approaches based on the popular, publicly avail…
In this paper, we propose a new image denoising method, tailored to specific classes of images, assuming that a dataset of clean images of the same class is available. Similarly to the non-local means (NLM) algorithm, the proposed method computes a weighted average of non-local patches, which we interpret under the importance sampling framework. This viewpoint introduces flexibility regarding the adopted priors, the noise statistics, and the computation of Bayesian estimates. The importance sampling viewpoint is exploited to approximate the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) patch estimates, us…
This paper presents an adaptive and intelligent sparse model for digital image sampling and recovery. In the proposed sampler, we adaptively determine the number of required samples for retrieving image based on space-frequency-gradient information content of image patches. By leveraging texture in space, sparsity locations in DCT domain, and directional decomposition of gradients, the sampler structure consists of a combination of uniform, random, and nonuniform sampling strategies. For reconstruction, we model the recovery problem as a two-state cellular automaton to iteratively restore imag…

This paper introduces a new approach to patch-based image restoration based on external datasets and importance sampling. The Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) estimate of the image patches, the computation of which requires solving a multidimensional (typically intractable) integral, is approximated using samples from an external dataset. The new method, which can be interpreted as a generalization of the external non-local means (NLM), uses self-normalized importance sampling to efficiently approximate the MMSE estimates. The use of self-normalized importance sampling endows the proposed met…
Very large overhead imagery associated with ground truth maps has the potential to generate billions of training image patches for machine learning algorithms. However, random sampling selection criteria often leads to redundant and noisy-image patches for model training. With minimal research efforts behind this challenge, the current status spells missed opportunities to develop supervised learning algorithms that generalize over wide geographical scenes. In addition, much of the computational cycles for large scale machine learning are poorly spent crunching through noisy and redundant imag…

We propose a novel image sampling method for differentiable image transformation in deep neural networks. The sampling schemes currently used in deep learning, such as Spatial Transformer Networks, rely on bilinear interpolation, which performs poorly under severe scale changes, and more importantly, results in poor gradient propagation. This is due to their strict reliance on direct neighbors. Instead, we propose to generate random auxiliary samples in the vicinity of each pixel in the sampled image, and create a linear approximation with their intensity values. We then use this approximation…
Transform image processing methods are methods that work in domains of image transforms, such as Discrete Fourier, Discrete Cosine, Wavelet and alike. They are the basic tool in image compression, in image restoration, in image re-sampling and geometrical transformations and can be traced back to early 1970-ths. The paper presents a review of these methods with emphasis on their comparison and relationships, from the very first steps of transform image compression methods to adaptive and local adaptive transform domain filters for image restoration, to methods of precise image re-sampling and …
With the development of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), plenty of methods based on DNNs have been proposed for Single Image Super-Resolution (SISR). However, existing methods mostly train the DNNs on uniformly sampled LR-HR patch pairs, which makes them fail to fully exploit informative patches within the image. In this paper, we present a simple yet effective data augmentation method. We first devise a heuristic metric to evaluate the informative importance of each patch pair. In order to reduce the computational cost for all patch pairs, we further propose to optimize the calculation of our met…

In this paper, we propose an image re-sampling compression method by learning virtual codec network (VCN) to resolve the non-differentiable problem of quantization function for image compression. Here, the image re-sampling not only refers to image full-resolution re-sampling but also low-resolution re-sampling. We generalize this method for standard-compliant image compression (SCIC) framework and deep neural networks based compression (DNNC) framework. Specifically, an input image is measured by re-sampling network (RSN) network to get re-sampled vectors. Then, these vectors are directly qua…
The lensless endoscope is a promising device designed to image tissues in vivo at the cellular scale. The traditional acquisition setup consists in raster scanning during which the focused light beam from the optical fiber illuminates sequentially each pixel of the field of view (FOV). The calibration step to focus the beam and the sampling scheme both take time. In this preliminary work, we propose a scanning method based on compressive sampling theory. The method does not rely on a focused beam but rather on the random illumination patterns generated by the single-mode fibers. Experiments ar…
We propose a patch sampling strategy based on a sequential Monte-Carlo method for high resolution image classification in the context of Multiple Instance Learning. Almost all existing methods for image restoration are based on optimizing the mean squared error (MSE), even though it is known that the best estimate in terms of MSE may yield a highly atypical image due to the fact that there are many plausible restorations for a given noisy image. In this paper, we show how to combine explicit priors on patches of natural images in order to sample from the posterior probability of a full image given a degraded image. We prove that our algorithm generates correct samples from the distribution $p(x|y) \propto \exp(-E(x|y))$ where $E(x|y)$ is the cost function…

We introduce a new method to efficiently create text-to-image models from a pre-trained CLIP and StyleGAN. It enables text driven sampling with an existing generative model without any external data or fine-tuning. This is achieved by training a diffusion model conditioned on CLIP embeddings to sample latent vectors of a pre-trained StyleGAN, which we call clip2latent. We leverage the alignment between CLIP's image and text embeddings to avoid the need for any text labelled data for training the conditional diffusion model. In this paper, we propose an efficient pseudo-marginal Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling approach to draw samples from posterior shape distributions for image segmentation. The computation time of the proposed approach is independent from the size of the training set used to learn the shape prior distribution nonparametrically. Therefore, it scales well for very large data sets. Our approach is able to characterize the posterior probability density in the space of shapes through its samples, and to return multiple solutions, potentially from different modes of a multimodal probability d…

Sparse sampling schemes have the potential to dramatically reduce image acquisition time while simultaneously reducing radiation damage to samples. However, for a sparse sampling scheme to be useful it is important that we are able to reconstruct the underlying object with sufficient clarity using the sparse measurements. In dynamic sampling, each new measurement location is selected based on information obtained from previous measurements. Therefore, dynamic sampling schemes have the potential to dramatically reduce the number of measurements needed for high fidelity reconstructions. However,…
Object detection in high-resolution satellite imagery is emerging as a scalable alternative to on-the-ground survey data collection in many environmental and socioeconomic monitoring applications. However, performing object detection over large geographies can still be prohibitively expensive due to the high cost of purchasing imagery and compute. Given a cost budget, our method selects a small number of representative areas by sampling …
We propose a randomized version of the non-local means (NLM) algorithm for large-scale image filtering. The new algorithm, called Monte Carlo non-local means (MCNLM), speeds up the classical NLM by computing a small subset of image patch distances, which are randomly selected according to a designed sampling pattern. We make two contributions. First, we analyze the performance of the MCNLM algorithm and show that, for large images or large external image databases, the random outcomes of MCNLM are tightly concentrated around the deterministic full NLM result. In particular, our error probabili…
Building on recent advances in image generation, we present a fully data-driven approach to rendering markup into images. To mitigate these issues, we adapt the scheduled sampling algorithm to diffusion training. We conduct experiments on fo…

The image quality comparisons use a "dead leaves" data set, Bayesian estimation and the Peak-Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) measure. Compressed sensing is explored as an interpolation algorithm and shows with high probability an improved performance compared to Lanczos interpolation. Furthermore, multi-level sampling in a single-pixel scanning system is sim…
Derivative compressive sampling (DCS) is a signal reconstruction method from measurements of the spatial gradient with sub-Nyquist sampling rate. Applications of DCS include optical image reconstruction, photometric stereo, and shape-from-shading. In this work, we study the sensitivity of DCS with respect to algorithmic hyperparameters using a brute-force search algorithm. We perform experiments on a dataset of surface images and deduce guidelines for the user to setup values for the hyperparameters for improved signal recovery performance.

Our method employs Langevin dynamics that relies on a repeated application of any given MMSE denoiser, obtaining the reconstructed image by effectively sampling f…

Although an object may appear in numerous contexts, we often describe it in a limited number of ways. Language allows us to abstract away visual variation to represent and communicate concepts. Building on this intuition, we propose an alternative approach to visual representation learning: using language similarity to sample semantically similar image pairs for contrastive learning. Our approach diverges from image-based contrastive learning by sampling view pairs using language similarity instead of hand-crafted augmentations or learned clusters. Our approach also differs from image-text con…
