Emission spectra from magnetars in the soft X-ray band likely contain a thermal component emerging directly from the neutron star surface. However, the lack of observed absorption-like features in quiescent spectra makes it difficult to directly constrain physical properties of the atmosphere. We argue that future X-ray polarization measurements represent a promising technique for directly constraining the magnetar magnetic field strength and geometry. We construct models of the observed polarization signal from a finite surface hotspot, using the latest NS atmosphere models for magnetic fields B = 4 x 10^13--5 x 10^14 G. Our calculations are strongly dependent on the NS magnetic field strength and geometry, and are more weakly dependent on the NS equation of state and atmosphere composition. We discuss how the complementary dependencies of phase-resolved spectroscopy and polarimetry might resolve degeneracies that currently hamper the determination of magnetar physical parameters using thermal models.
We present the first imaging circular polarimetry of the anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXP) 4U 0142+61 at optical wavelengths. The AXP is the only magnetar that has been well studied at optical and infrared wavelengths and is known to have a complicated broad-band spectrum over the wavelength range. The optical polarimetric observation was carried out with the 8.2-m Subaru telescope at I-band. From the observation, the degree of circular polarization V was measured to be V=1.1+/-2.0%, or |V|<4.3% (90% confidence). The relatively large uncertainty was due to the faintness of the source (I=23.4-24.0).…
Magnetars are believed to host the strongest magnetic fields in the present universe ($B\gtrsim10^{14}$ G) and the study of their persistent emission in the X-ray band offers an unprecendented opportunity to gain insight into physical processes in the presence of ultra-strong magnetic fields. Up to now, most of our knowledge about magnetar sources came from spectral analysis, which allowed to test the resonant Compton scattering scenario and to probe the structure of the star magnetosphere. On the other hand, radiation emitted from magnetar surface is expected to be strongly polarized and its …
The study of magnetars is of particular relevance since these objects are the only laboratories where the physics in ultra-strong magnetic fields can be directly tested. Until now, spectroscopic and timing measurements at X-ray energies in soft gamma-repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsar (AXPs) have been the main source of information about the physical properties of a magnetar and of its magnetosphere. Spectral fitting in the ~ 0.5-10 keV range allowed to validate the "twisted magnetosphere" model, probing the structure of the external field and estimating the density and velocity of th…
We present a systematic fit of a model of resonant cyclotron scattering (RCS) to the X and soft gamma-ray data of four magnetars, including anomalous X-ray pulsars, and soft gamma repeaters. In this scenario, non-thermal magnetar spectra in the soft X-rays result from resonant cyclotron scattering of the thermal surface emission by hot magnetospheric plasma. We find that this model can successfully account for the soft X-ray emission of magnetars, while an additional component is still required to model the hard X-ray persistent magnetar emission recently discovered by INTEGRAL. The latter is …
The non-linear electrodynamics influence of pulsar magnetic field on the electromagnetic pulse polarization is discussed from the point of observation interpretation. The calculations of pulsar magnetic field impact on electromagnetic pulse polarization are made in such a way to make it easier to interpret these effects in space experiments. The law of hard emission pulse propagation in the pulsar magnetic field according to the vacuum non-linear electrodynamics is obtained. It was shown, that due to the birefringence in the vacuum the front part of any hard emission pulse coming from a pulsar…
The modification of the rotating vector model in the case of magnetars are calculated. Magnetars may have twisted magnetic field compared with normal pulsars. The polarization position angle of magnetars will change in the case of a twisted magnetic field. For a twisted dipole field, we found that the position angle will change both vertically and horizontally. During the untwisting process of the magnetar magnetosphere, the modifications of the position angle will evolve with time monotonously. This may explain the evolution of the position angle in magnetar PSR J1622-4950 and XTE J1810-197. …
Phase-resolved spectral and spectropolarimetric X-ray observations of magnetars present us with the opportunity to test models of the origin of the X-ray emission from these objects, and to constrain the properties of the neutron star surface and atmosphere. We present a new X-ray fitting model for magnetars that accounts for four different emission models including a blackbody emission model, a magnetized atmosphere model, and fixed-ions and free-ions surface emission models. We use the new model for a phase resolved fit of archival XMM-Newton observations of the magnetar 1RXS J170849.0-40091…
The recent detection of a large polarization degree in the optical emission of an isolated neutron star led to the suggestion that this has been the first evidence of vacuum polarization in a strong magnetic field, an effect predicted by quantum electrodynamics but never observed before. This claim was challanged in a paper by Capparelli, Maiani & Polosa (2017), according to whom a much higher polarization degree would be necessary to positively identify vacuum polarization. Here we show that their conclusions are biased by several inadequate assumptions and have no impact on the original clai…
We present a radio continuum and linear polarization study of the Galactic supernova remnant G57.2+0.8, which may host the recently discovered magnetar SGR1935+2154. The radio SNR shows the typical radio continuum spectrum of a mature supernova remnant with a spectral index of $α= -0.55 \pm 0.02$ and moderate polarized intensity. Magnetic field vectors indicate a tangential magnetic field, expected for an evolved SNR, in one part of the SNR and a radial magnetic field in the other. The latter can be explained by an overlapping arc-like feature, perhaps a pulsar wind nebula, emanating from the …
Bursts and flares are among the distinctive observational manifestations of magnetars, isolated neutron stars endowed with an ultra-strong magnetic field ($B \approx 10^{14}$--$10^{15}$ G). It is believed that these events arise in a hot electron-positron plasma which remains trapped within the closed magnetic field lines. We developed a simple radiative transfer model to simulate magnetar flare emission in the case of a steady trapped fireball. After dividing the fireball surface in a number of plane-parallel slabs, the local spectral and polarization properties are obtained integrating the r…
We consider propagation of polarization in the inner parts of pair-symmetric magnetar winds, close to the light cylinder. Pair plasmas in magnetic field is birefringent, a $\propto B^2$ effect. As a result, such plasmas work as phase retarders: Stokes parameters follow a circular trajectory on the Poincare sphere. In the highly magnetized regime, $ω, \, ω_p \ll ω_B$, the corresponding rotation rates are independent of the magnetic field. A plasma screen with dispersion measure DM $\sim 10^{-6}$ pc cm$^{-3}$ can induce large polarization changes, including large effective Rotation Measure (RM).…
Over the next year, a new era of observations of compact objects in X-ray polarization will commence. Among the key targets for the upcoming Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer mission, will be the magnetars 4U 0142+61 and 1RXS J170849.0-400910. Here we present the first detailed predictions of the expected polarization from these sources that incorporate realistic models of emission physics at the surface (gaseous or condensed), the temperature distribution on the surface, general relativity, quantum electrodynamics and scattering in the magnetosphere, and also account for the broadband spectr…
Magnetars are neutron stars with extremely high surface magnetic fields. They show diverse X-ray pulse profiles in the quiescent state. We perform a systematic Fourier analysis of their soft X-ray pulse profiles. We find that most magnetars have a single-peaked profile and hence have low amplitudes of the second Fourier harmonics (A2). On the other hand, the pulsed fraction (PF) spreads over a wide range. We compared the results with theoretical profiles assuming various surface hotspot asymmetries, viewing geometries, and beaming functions. We found that a single value of the intensity ratio …
The propagation of emissions in the relativistic streaming pair plasmas of pulsars and magnetars is studied within the framework of Gordon effective metric theory, and the effect of vacuum polarization on the radiation spectra is examined particularly. It is found that the electromagnetic and kinetic effects of streaming magnetized plasmas and the vacuum polarization effect can shift the radiation spectra of stars. The modification of redshifts of spectra can reach the same magnitude as the gravitational redshift in particular cases. Moreover, the redshifts induced by the media are anisotropic…
Three giant flares have been detected so far from soft gamma-ray repeaters, each characterized by an initial short hard spike and a pulsating tail. The observed pulsating tails are characterized by a duration of $\sim100\,\rm{s}$, an isotropic energy of $\sim 10^{44}\,\rm{erg}$, and a pulse period of a few seconds. The pulsating tail emission likely originates from the residual energy after the intense energy release during the initial spike, which forms a trapped fireball composed of a photon-pair plasma in a closed field line region of the magnetars. Observationally the spectra of pulsating …

Superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) are at least $\sim$5 times more luminous than common supernovae (SNe). Especially hydrogen-poor SLSN-I are difficult to explain with conventional powering mechanisms. One possible scenario that might explain such luminosities is that SLSNe-I are powered by an internal engine, such as a magnetar or an accreting black hole. Strong magnetic fields or collimated jets can circularly polarize light. In this work, we measured circular polarization of two SLSNe-I with the FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrograph (FORS2) mounted at the ESO's Very Large Telescope (V…
In this paper, we discuss our first attempts to model the broadband persistent emission of magnetars within a self consistent, physical scenario. We present the predictions of a synthetic model that we calculated with a new Monte Carlo 3-D radiative code. The basic idea is that soft thermal photons (e.g. emitted by the star surface) can experience resonant cyclotron upscattering by a population of relativistic electrons threated in the twisted magnetosphere. Our code is specifically tailored to work in the ultra-magnetized regime; polarization and QED effects are consistently accounted for, as…
Recent observations of the periodic Fast Radio Burst source 180916.J0158+65 (FRB 180916) find small linear polarization position angle swings during and between bursts, with a burst activity window that becomes both narrower and earlier at higher frequencies. Although the observed chromatic activity window disfavors models of periodicity in FRB 180916 driven by the occultation of a neutron star by the optically-thick wind from a stellar companion, the connection to theories where periodicity arises from the motion of a bursting magnetar remains unclear. In this paper, we show how altitude-depe…

The magnetar 4U~0142+61 has been well studied at optical and infrared wavelengths and is known to have a complicated broad-band spectrum over the wavelength range. Here we report the result from our linear imaging polarimetry of the magnetar at optical $I$-band. From the polarimetric observation carried out with the 8.2-m Subaru telescope, we determine the degree of linear polarization $P=1.0\pm$3.4\%, or $P\leq$5.6\% (90\% confidence level). Considering models suggested for optical emission from magnetars, we discuss the implications of our result. The upper limit measurement indicates that d…
Soft gamma-ray repeaters and anomalous X-ray pulsars are a small (but growing) group of X-ray sources characterized by the emission of short bursts and by a large variability in their persistent flux. They are believed to be magnetars, i.e. neutron stars powered by extreme magnetic fields 1E14-1E15 G). We found evidence for a magnetar with a low magnetic field, SGR 0418+5729, recently detected after it emitted bursts similar to those of soft gamma-ray repeaters. New X-ray observations show that its dipolar magnetic field cannot be greater than 8E12 G, well in the range of ordinary radio pulsar…
The anomalous X-ray pulsar XTE J1810$-$197 was the first magnetar found to emit pulsed radio emission. After spending almost a decade in a quiescent, radio-silent state, the magnetar was reported to have undergone a radio outburst in December, 2018. We observed radio pulsations from XTE J1810$-$197 during this early phase of its radio revival using the Ultra-Wideband Low receiver system of the Parkes radio telescope, obtaining wideband (704 MHz to 4032 MHz) polarization pulse profiles, single pulses and flux density measurements. Dramatic changes in polarization and rapid variations of the pos…
In the magnetar model, the quiescent non-thermal soft X-ray emission from Anomalous X-ray Pulsars and Soft-Gamma Repeaters is thought to arise from resonant comptonization of thermal photons by charges moving in a twisted magnetosphere. Robust inference of physical quantities from observations is difficult, because the process depends strongly on geometry and current understanding of the magnetosphere is not very deep. The polarization of soft X-ray photons is an independent source of information, and its magnetospheric imprint remains only partially explored. In this paper we calculate how re…
Spin polarized states in dense neutron matter with BSk20 Skyrme force are considered in magnetic fields up to $10^{20}$ G. It is shown that the appearance of the longitudinal instability in a strong magnetic field prevents the formation of a fully spin polarized state in neutron matter, and only the states with moderate spin polarization can be developed.
In a recent paper it is claimed that vacuum birefringence has been experimentally observed for the first time by measuring the degree of polarization of visible light from a Magnetar candidate, a neutron star with a magnetic field presumably as large as $B\sim 10^{13}$~G. The role of such a strong magnetic field is twofold. First, the surface of the star emits, at each point, polarized light with linear polarization correlated with the orientation of the magnetic field. Depending on the relative orientation of the magnetic axis of the star with the direction to the distant observer, a certain …
As soon as the energy of electrons near the Fermi surface are higher than $Q$, the threshold energy of inverse $β-$ decay, the electron capture process will dominate. The resulting high-energy neutrons will destroy anisotropic ${}^3P_2$ neutron superfluid Cooper pairs. By colliding with the neutrons produced in the process $n+ (n\uparrow n\downarrow)\longrightarrow n+ n+ n$, the kinetic energy of the outgoing neutrons will be transformed into thermal energy. The transformed thermal energy would transported from the star interior to the star surface by conduction, then would be transformed into…
Several observations obtained in the last few years indicate that Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters (SGRs) and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) are basically a single class of isolated neutron stars. Their properties are well explained by the magnetar model, based on neutron stars powered by magnetic fields as high as 10^14 -10^15 G. Here I report some recent results obtained for the transient Soft Gamma-ray Repeater SGR 1627-41, that started a new outburst after about 10 years from the previous one, and for the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 1E 1547.0-5408. The latter source recently showed a remarkable burstin…

The recent discovery of the "weak field, old magnetar", the soft gamma repeater SGR 0418+5729, whose dipole magnetic field is less than 7.5 \times 10^{12} G, has raised perplexing questions: How can the neutron star produce SGR-like bursts with such a low magnetic field? What powers the observed X-ray emission when neither the rotational energy nor the magnetic dipole energy are sufficient? These observations, that suggest either a much larger energy reservoir or a much younger true age (or both), have renewed the interest in the evolutionary sequence of magnetars. We examine, here, a phenomen…
Axion-like-particles (ALPs) emitted from the core of a magnetar can convert to photons in its magnetosphere. The resulting photon flux is sensitive to the product of $(i)$ the ALP-nucleon coupling $G_{an}$ which controls the production cross section in the core and $(ii)$ the ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγγ}$ which controls the conversion in the magnetosphere. We study such emissions in the soft-gamma-ray range (300 keV to 1 MeV), where the ALP spectrum peaks and astrophysical backgrounds from resonant Compton upscattering are expected to be suppressed. Using published quiescent soft-gamma-ray flu…
We have generated an extended version of rather simplified but physically oriented three-dimensional magnetar emission model, STEMS3D, to allow spectral investigations up to 100 keV. We have then applied it to the broadband spectral spectra of four magnetars: 4U 0142+61, 1E 1841-045, 1E 2259+586 and 1E 1048.1-5937, using data collected with Swift/XRT or XMM-Newton in soft X-rays, and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array in the hard X-ray band. We found that the hard X-ray emission of 4U 0142+61 was spectrally hard compared to the earlier detections, indicating that the source was likely in a …
Magnetars are conjectured to be highly magnetized neutron stars (NSs). Strong internal magnetic field and elasticity in the crust may deform the stars and lead to free precession. We study the precession dynamics of triaxially-deformed NSs incorporating the near-field and the far-field electromagnetic torques. We obtain timing residuals for different NS geometries and torques. We also investigate the polarized X-ray and radio signals from precessing magnetars. The modulations on the Stokes parameters are obtained for thermal X-rays emitted from the surface of magnetars. For radio signals, we a…
We present a catalog of the 26 currently known magnetars and magnetar candidates. We tabulate astrometric and timing data for all catalog sources, as well as their observed radiative properties, particularly the spectral parameters of the quiescent X-ray emission. We show histograms of the spatial and timing properties of the magnetars, comparing them with the known pulsar population, and we investigate and plot possible correlations between their timing, X-ray, and multiwavelength properties. We find the scale height of magnetars to be in the range 20-31 pc, assuming they are exponentially di…
(adapted)Considering recent observations challenging the traditional magnetar model, we explore the wind braking of magnetars. There is evidence for strong multipole magnetic fields in active magnetars, but the dipole field inferred from spin down measurements may be strongly biased by a particle wind. Recent challenging observations of magnetars may be explained naturally in the wind braking scenario: (1) The supernova energies of magnetars are of normal value; (2) The non-detection in Fermi observations of magnetars; (3) The problem posed by the low-magnetic field soft gamma-ray repeaters; (…
Broad-band (0.8-70 keV) spectra of the persistent X-ray emission from 9 magnetars were obtained with Suzaku, including 3 objects in apparent outburst. The soft X-ray component was detected from all of them, with a typical blackbody temperature of kT ~ 0.5 keV, while the hard-tail component, dominating above ~10 keV, was detected at ~1 mCrab intensity from 7 of them. Therefore, the spectrum composed of a soft emission and a hard-tail component may be considered to be a common property of magnetars, both in their active and quiescent states. Wide-band spectral analyses revealed that the hard-tai…
Magnetars have been suggested as the most promising site for the origin of observed soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) and anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs). In this work we investigate the possibility that SGRs and AXPs might be observational evidence for a magnetic phase separation in magnetars. We study magnetic domain formation as a new mechanism for SGRs and AXPs in which magnetar-matter separates into two phases containing different flux densities. We identify the parameter space in matter density and magnetic field strength at which there is an instability for magnetic domain formation. We co…
Within the magnetar scenario, the "twisted magnetosphere" model appears very promising in explaining the persistent X-ray emission from the Soft Gamma Repeaters and the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (SGRs and AXPs). In the first two papers of the series, we have presented a 3D Monte Carlo code for solving radiation transport as soft, thermal photons emitted by the star surface are resonantly upscattered by the magnetospheric particles. A spectral model archive has been generated and implemented in XSPEC. Here we report on the systematic application of our spectral model to different XMM-Newton and I…
Magnetars are the most strongly magnetized neutron stars, and one of the most promising targets for X-ray polarimetric measurements. We present here the first Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observation of the magnetar 1RXS J170849.0-400910, jointly analysed with a new Swift observation and archival NICER data. The total (energy and phase integrated) emission in the 2-8 keV energy range is linerarly polarized, at a ~35% level. The phase-averaged polarization signal shows a marked increase with energy, ranging from ~20% at 2-3 keV up to ~80% at 6-8 keV, while the polarization angle re…
There is a general consensus about the fact that the magnetar scenario provides a convincing explanation for several of the observed properties of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsars and the Soft Gamma Repeaters. However, the origin of the emission observed at low energies is still an open issue. We present a quantitative model for the emission in the optical/infrared band produced by curvature radiation from magnetospheric charges, and compare results with current magnetars observations.
The nearly 100% linear polarization has been reported for a few fast radio bursts. This finding places severe limits on the emission mechanism. I argue that the totally polarized radiation could be generated in the course of relativistic magnetic reconnection in the outer magnetosphere of the magnetar. At the onset of the magnetar flare, a large scale magnetic perturbation forms a magnetic pulse, which propagates from the flare cite outwards. The pulse strongly compresses magnetospheric plasma and pushes it away. The high-frequency MHD waves are generated when the magnetic pulse reaches the cu…
Magnetars are proposed to be peculiar neutron stars powered by their super strong magnetic field. Observationally, anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma-ray repeaters are believed to be magnetar candidates. While more and more multiwave observations of magnetars are available, unfortunately, we see accumulating failed predictions of the traditional magnetar model. These challenges urge rethinking of magnetar. Wind braking of magnetars is one of the alternative modelings. The release of magnetic energy may generate a particle outflow (i.e., particle wind), that results in both an anomalous X-r…
It is now widely accepted that soft gamma repeaters and anomalous X-ray pulsars are the observational manifestations of magnetars, i.e. sources powered by their own magnetic energy. This view was supported by the fact that these `magnetar candidates' exhibited, without exception, a surface dipole magnetic field (as inferred from the spin-down rate) in excess of the electron critical field (~4.4E+13 G). The recent discovery of fully-qualified magnetars, SGR 0418+5729 and Swift J1822.3-1606, with dipole magnetic field well in the range of ordinary radio pulsars posed a challenge to the standard …
Lyutikov (2002) predicted "radio emission from soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) during their bursting activity". Detection of a Mega-Jansky radio burst in temporal coincidence with high energy bursts from a Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 confirms that prediction. Similarity of this radio event with Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) suggests that FRBs are produced within magnetar magnetospheres. We demonstrate that SGR 1935+2154 satisfies the previously derived constraints on the physical parameters at the FRBs' loci. Coherent radio emission is generated in the inner parts of the magnetosphere at $r< 10…
Magnetars are neutron stars with very strong magnetic fields on the order of $10^{13}$ to $10^{15}$ G. Young magnetars with oppositely-oriented magnetic fields and spin moments may emit high-energy (HE) neutrinos from their polar caps as they may be able to accelerate cosmic rays to above the photomeson threshold (Zhang et al. 2003). Giant flares of soft gamma-ray repeaters (a subclass of magnetars) may also produce HE neutrinos and therefore a HE neutrino flux from this class is potentially detectable (Ioka et al. 2005). Here we present plans to search for neutrino emission from magnetars lis…
We argue that measurements of X-ray polarization using the recently launched Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer will answer many open questions about magnetars in particular the physical state of their surfaces, whether vacuum birefringence exists, and the nature of the hard X-ray emission from these objects. We outline the capabilities of the instrument, specific models and the results of simulations for the magnetar 4U~0142+61.
