I present the recent electroweak measurements related to single W, Z boson and diboson productions from the CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron collider.
Electroweak measurements from early in Run II of the Tevatron Collider at Fermilab are presented as well as future prospects for Run II. The effect of Tevatron measurements on worldwide electroweak fits and the Higgs mass is also discussed.
Tests of the Standard Model with Electroweak Physics have been performed over many decades. In these proceedings, we present several analyses from the Tevatron involving single $W$ or $Z$ bosons.
An overview of Tevatron electroweak measurements performed by the CDF and D0 experiments is presented. The current status and future prospects for high precision measurements of electroweak parameters and detailed studies of boson production are highlighted.
The phenomenology of the electroweak symmetry breaking sector is expected to involve resonances decaying preferentially into heavy fermions. Three recent CDF analyses are reviewed and used to constrain Higgs and Technicolor models.
Recent measurements of processes involving the electroweak bosons, Z and W, performed at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider are summarized. The large integrated luminosities collected by both the D0 and CDF Collaborations enable precise measurements of differential single boson production cross sections, the determination of the W mass with unprecedented precision, and the observation of diboson production including ZZ.
With the advent of the Tevatron Run 2, the collider experiments, CDF and D0, have reestablished the top quark and the W and Z signals and have begun programs of precision measurements of top quark and electroweak properties. We will survey some of the first Run 2 results from these analyses, and when appropriate compare with the Run 1 results. Finally we will give the status of Higgs boson searches and prospects at the Tevatron.
We summarize an extensive Tevatron (1984-2011) electroweak physics program that involves a variety of W and Z boson precision measurements. The relevance of these studies using single and associated gauge boson production to our understanding of the electroweak sector, quantum chromodynamics and searches for new physics is emphasized. We discuss the importance of the W boson mass measurement, the W/Z boson distributions and asymmetries, and diboson studies. We highlight the recent Tevatron measurements and prospects for the final Tevatron measurements.
The Tevatron Run-II program has been in progress since 2001, and the CDF and D0 experiments have been operational with upgraded detectors. Coupled with recent improvements in the Tevatron accelerator performance, the experiments have started producing important physics results and measurements. We report these measurements as well as prospects in the near future.
Recent electroweak results from the CDF and D0 Collaborations at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider are presented. After a brief description of the \D0 measurements of W/Z production cross sections, W width, W mass and W \to τνdecays, the CDF result on W(pT) distribution is outlined. The comprehensive search for anomalous gauge couplings by \D0 in 1992-96 data is presented along with a detailed description of the WW/WZ \to μνjj channel.
This writeup is an introduction to some of the experimental issues involved in performing electroweak and B physics measurements at the Fermilab Tevatron. In the electroweak sector, we discuss W and Z boson cross section measurements as well as the measurement of the mass of the W boson. For B physics, we discuss measurements of B^0/\bar{B^0} mixing and CP violation. This paper is geared towards nonexperts who are interested in understanding some of the issues and motivations for these measurements and how the measurements are carried out.
We present recent preliminary measurements at the Tevatron of t-tbar and single top production cross section, top quark mass and width, top pair spin correlations and forward-backward asymmetry. In the electroweak sector, we present the Tevatron average of the W boson width, and preliminary measurements of the W and Z forward-backward asymmetries and WZ, ZZ diboson production cross sections. All measurements are based on larger amount of collision data than previously used and are in agreement with the standard model.
Recent Run 2 experimental results on electroweak physics from the CDF and D0 collaborations at Tevatron are reviewed. We present measurements of the inclusive W and Z boson cross-sections times leptonic branching ratio as well as the Z/gamma forward-backward asymmetry and the W charge asymmetry for p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. The first Run 2 studies for the W width and W mass measurements are also reported. The di-boson production results are presented elsewhere.
In the last decades electroweak processes were studied at hadron and lepton colliders. By exploiting the large statistics and the c.o.m. energy available, hadron colliders played a significant role in performing precision measurements of standard model parameters and in observing rare processes. Besides, in the last decade of the XX century, the last fermion predicted -the top quark- was discovered at the Tevatron collider. We are now at the start of a new hadron collider, the LHC, and in this paper, I will review recent results from the Tevatron and compare perspectives for experiment taking …
A summary of the most up-to-date top quark mass measurements at CDF is presented. These analyses use top-antitop candidate events detected in the CDF experiment at the Tevatron collider with an integrated luminosity of up to ~3/fb. The combination of all those measurements together with the corresponding top mass measurements from the concurrently running D0 experiment at the Tevatron yields a world average of M_t=[173.1+/-0.6(stat.)+/-1.1(syst.)] GeV/c^2.
With the full Tevatron data set collected and being analyzed, many new results have been recently released. This includes heavy flavor physics studies such as CP violation parameter measurements with B^{+/-} -> J/ψK^{+/-} and B^{+/-} -> J/ψpi^{+/-} and $D^0-D^0bar mixing. Of the QCD and electroweak results, photon plus heavy flavor measurements and a search for anomalous quartic gauge couplings will be reviewed. These various studies help to clarify the agreement between data and physics models and to search for new physics.
An overview of recent electroweak physics results from the Tevatron is given. Properties of the W and Z gauge bosons using final states containing electrons and muons based on large integrated luminosities are presented. In particular, measurements of the W and Z production cross sections, the W-charge asymmetry and the measurement of the W-mass are summarized. Gauge boson self interactions are measured by studying gauge boson pair production and limits on anomalous gauge boson couplings are discussed.
The increasing size of the data samples recorded by the CDF and DO experiments at the Tevatron enables studies of a wide range of processes involving the electroweak bosons W and Z. Single boson production is now looked at in terms of differential cross sections such as rapidity or transverse momentum dependence. Diboson production cross-sections are several orders of magnitude smaller than single boson production cross-sections, but all combinations Wgamma, Zgamma, WW and WZ have been observed. ZZ production is expected at a rate just below the observation threshold with current data sample s…
The Tevatron Run II will provide CDF and D0 with a large dataset of ppbar interactions collected at sqrt(s)=2 TeV. We discuss the opportunity for the two experiments to improve the understanding of electrowek and top physics in the first years of data taking (Run IIa,2fb-1) in view of the upgrades of the detectors. We also discuss the prospectives for a Higgs discovery at the Tevatron in view of the Run IIb data taking period which will deliver an additional of about 13fb-1 to each experiment
We report the first observation of single top quark production using ppbar collision data with sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II and D0 detectors at Fermilab. The significance of both the observed CDF and D0 data is 5.0 standard deviations, and the expected sensitivity is in excess of 5.9 and equal to 4.5 standard deviations, respectively. The single top production cross section and the CKM matrix element value |V_{tb}| have been measured.
We report a selection of the most recent CDF and D0 results on top quark and W and Z boson properties, based on Tevatron Run 2 data. The large datasets of W and Z bosons allow a very precise measurement of the W mass and detailed studies of vector boson production and asymmetries. Associated production of vector boson pairs has been observed and cross sections have been measured. The top quark is being studied in great detail, and a precision of 1.1 % in the measurement of its mass has been achieved. The precise knowledge of top and W masses are constraining the allowed mass range of a standar…
Progress continues on many fronts of experimental testing of electroweak symmetry breaking. Updates were presented on LEP, SLC, Brookhaven g-2 ring, Tevatron Collider, HERA, CESR and Tevatron neutrino experiments. Perhaps most exciting is the Higgs search at LEP2, complementing the indirect constraints. However, the standard model with one Higgs doublet remains viable.
Drell-Yan lepton pairs produced in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow \ell^+\ell^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson have an asymmetry in their angular distribution related to the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the electroweak force and the associated mixing of its neutral gauge bosons. The CDF and D0 experiments have measured the effective-leptonic electroweak mixing parameter $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$ using electron and muon pairs selected from the full Tevatron proton-antiproton data sets collected in 2001-2011, corresponding to 9-10 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The c…
The electroweak contributions to the forward-backward asymmetry in the production of top-quark pairs at the Tevatron are evaluated at O(alpha^2) and O(alpha*alphas^2). We perform a detailed analysis of all partonic channels that produce an asymmetry and combine them with the QCD contributions. They provide a non-negligible fraction of the QCD-induced asymmetry with the same overall sign, thus enlarging the Standard Model prediction and diminishing the observed deviation. For the observed mass-dependent forward-backward asymmetry a 3-sigma deviation still remains at an invariant-mass cut of M_(…
Recent CDF and D0 measurements of the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron present deviations between 1-sigma and 2-sigma from QCD predictions and a cut M_inv > 450 GeV on the events increases this deviation to 3.4 sigma in the CDF measurement. The inclusion of electroweak contributions of order alpha^2 and order alpha alphas^2 enlarges the theoretical prediction from QCD by a factor ~ 1.2 and diminishes the observed deviations. The calculation method is shortly discussed and numerical results are compared to the experimental data.
Single-jet production with missing transverse momentum is one of the most promising discovery channels for new physics at the LHC. In the Standard Model, Z + jet production with a Z-boson decay into neutrinos leads to this monojet signature. To improve the corresponding Standard Model predictions, we present the calculation of the full next-to-leading-order (NLO) electroweak corrections and a recalculation of the NLO QCD corrections to monojet production at the Tevatron and the LHC. We discuss the phenomenological impact on the total cross sections as well as on relevant differential distribut…
The mass of the top quark has been measured at Fermilab using the Tevatron ppbar collider to a precision of less than 1%. I discuss the individual measurements that go into this result and its impact on our understanding of the standard model of the electroweak interactions.
We present some recent measurements on electroweak physics using data collected by the CDF experiment at the Tevatron proton anti-proton collider ($\sqrt{s}=1.96\mathrm{TeV}$) at Fermilab (Batavia, Ill, USA).
We report on a search for extra spatial dimensions compactified at radii that are vast compared to those of the Planck length, and even larger than the distance corresponding to the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking. The study is based on the suggestion that there may be only a single mass scale appropriate to particle phenomena, this being the effective Planck scale M_S, which also serves as the scale for electroweak symmetry breaking. The only results that have been presented thus far from the Tevatron are based on data for e^+e^- and γγproduction at DØ, and provide the most restrictive…
It has been recently shown that the observed baryon number may originate at the electroweak phase transition, provided that the Higgs boson and the lightest stop are sufficiently light. In this work, we perform a detailed analysis, including all dominant two-loop finite temperature corrections to the Higgs effective potential, as well as the non-trivial effects proceeding from the mixing in the stop sector, to define the region of parameter space for which electroweak baryogenesis can happen. The limits on the stop and Higgs masses are obtained by taking into account the experimental bounds on…
The latest results on the measurements of electroweak top-quark production at the Tevatron are presented with the full RunII dataset. The CDF and D0 Collaborations have performed measurements of the s, t, and s+t channels in both l+jets and MET+jets final states. Evidence for the production of the s channel is presented for the first time.
The measurement of the CP violation in the b-meson system and of b-meson rare decays provides information about the electroweak symmetry breaking in terms of flavour structure of the CKM matrix and flavour changing neutral currents. The deviation of the experimental observations from the Standard Model predictions allows to constrain new physics. In this paper recent results from Tevatron are reported.
The latest results in electroweak physics from proton anti-proton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron recorded by the CDF detector are presented. The results provide constraints on parton distribution functions, the mass of the Higgs boson and beyond the Standard Model physics.
Precision studies of the production of a high-transverse momentum lepton in association with missing energy at hadron colliders require that electroweak and QCD higher-order contributions are simultaneously taken into account in theoretical predictions and data analysis. Here we present a detailed phenomenological study of the impact of electroweak and strong contributions, as well as of their combination, to all the observables relevant for the various facets of the $p\smartpap \to {\rm lepton} + X$ physics programme at hadron colliders, including luminosity monitoring and Parton Distribution…
The Standard Model of particle physics has a number of asymmetries suggestive of a more fundamental theory, where the symmetries are restored. If the symmetry breaking scale is the electroweak scale, new Higgs bosons beyond that of the Standard Model could be observed at the Tevatron. Recent Tevatron searches have set the most stringent limits on new Higgs bosons in a variety of models.
We present some precision measurements on electroweak physics performed at the Tevatron collider at Fermilab. Namely we report on the boson-pair production cross sections and on triple gauge boson couplings using proton anti-proton collisions collected by the CDF and D0 experiments at the center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of up to 324 pb-1.
We report on the extraction of $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}(M_Z)$ and an indirect measurement of the mass of the W boson from the forward-backward asymmetry of dilepton events in the $Z$ boson mass region at the Tevatron. The data samples of $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ events collected by the CDF detector correspond to the full 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ run II sample and yield an effective electroweak mixing angle $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}(M_Z) = 0.23222 \pm 0.00046$. The corresponding result reported by the D0 collaboration with the full 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ $e^+e-$ sample is $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}(M_Z) =…
Recent measurements of high E_T jet production at the Tevatron are presented. These data provide stringent tests of perturbative QCD as well as constraints on parton distribution functions, the strong coupling constant and models implemented in event generators. Measurements of inclusive jet and multijet production as well as the associated production of jets with the electroweak bosons obtained by both the D0 and CDF collaborations are reviewed.
We present the most recent W and Z production, asymmetries, and V+jets results from the Tevatron collider at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, analyzing data collected by CDF and DZero detectors between 2002-2011. The results include the measurements of the W and Z bosons properties, include boson p_T and asymmetries measurements, and also the W and Z boson plus jets productions. Those measurements provide the precision tests on the electroweak in Standard Model (SM), and high order theoretical predictions.
We present some of the results in the areas of QCD and Electroweak physics for Run II of the DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. QCD results include dijet angular decorrelations and inclusive jet and dijet cross sections. Electroweak results include the decay of Z bosons to tau pairs and several results on gauge boson pairs. No deviations from the Standard Model have been observed.
Single top quark production via the electroweak interaction was observed by the D0 and CDF collaborations at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider at Fermilab. Multivariate analysis techniques are employed to extract the small single top quark signal. The combined Tevatron cross section is 2.76^+0.58_-0.47 pb. This corresponds to a lower limit on the CKM matrix element |Vtb| of 0.77. Also reported are measurements of the t-channel cross section, the top quark polarization in single top quark events, and limits on gluon-quark flavor-changing neutral currents and W' boson production.
A brief review of electroweak precision data from LEP, SLC, the Tevatron, and low energies is presented. The global fit to all data including the most recent results on the masses of the top quark and the W boson reinforces the preference for a relatively light Higgs boson. I will also give an outlook on future developments at the Tevatron Run II, CEBAF, the LHC, and the ILC.
This note details recent measurements of the top mass and cross section that have been performed at the Tevatron. Most of these measurements have been performed with between 1.0 and 2.0 fb-1 of data. Basic top physics concepts are discussed, cross section and mass analysis methods and results are presented, and future analysis prospects are discussed with a special attention given to Electroweak determination of the limits on the Standard Model Higgs mass.
The measurements of electroweak sector of the Standard Model are presented, including most recent results from LEP, Tevatron and HERA colliders. The robustness of the Standard Model is illustrated with the precision measurements, the electroweak fits and the comparisons to the results obtained from low energy experiments. The status of the measurements of the $W$ boson properties and rare production processes involving weak bosons at colliders is examined, together with the measurements of the electroweak parameters in $ep$ collisions.
We report on a search for Standard Model t-channel ans s-channel single top quark production in p-pbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. We use a data sample corresponding to 0.7 fb-1 recorded by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDFII) and a data sample corresponding to 370 pb-1 recorded by D0. Both CDF and D0 find no significant evidence for electroweak top quark production and set upper limits at the 95 % confidence level on the production cross section
Most recent tests of the Standard Model of the electroweak interaction are reported using data from the four LEP experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, the SLD experiment at SLC, the Tevatron ppbar experiments CDF and D0, and the NuTeV neutrino experiment. Consistency of the Standard Model is studied. The value of the Higgs mass is inferred from a global fit.
Recent measurements in the top quark sector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider are discussed. Measurements at the Tevatron use up to 9.7/fb of data corresponding to the full data sets recorded by the CDF and D0 experiments, respectively. This review discusses the most recent measurements of inclusive and differential top quark cross sections in strong and electroweak production of top quarks and related measurements, as well as measurements of angular distributions related to asymmetries in top quark production. Furthermore the current status on the precision measurements of the mass of the top…
We report on searches for the standard model Higgs boson with the CDF and D0 detectors using up to 2.7 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt s=$ 1.96 TeV proton anti-proton collisions at Fermilab's Tevatron. We focus on analyses that are sensitive to low mass Higgs production with $m_H<$ 140 GeV/$c^2$ favored by precision electroweak constraints. Both CDF and D0 find no evidence for Higgs boson production, and set upper limits on cross section times branching ratio. Several analyses improvements have increased the sensitivity to a Higgs signal faster than what is expected from increasing datasets alone.
The latest results from the CDF and D0 collaborations on the top-quark pair-production cross section and limits on electroweak production are presented. Included are measurements of properties of the top quark such as charge, lifetime, and the decay branching ratio t->Wb. In addition to measurements about the top quark, the selected event samples are used to study the helicity of the W boson and to search for additional exotic quarks (t') and resonances in the ttbar invariant mass spectrum.
The precise measurement of top quark production and properties is one of the primary goals of the Tevatron during Run II. The total top-antitop production cross-section has been measured in a large variety of decay channels and using different selection criteria. Results from differential cross-section measurements and searches for new physics in top-antitop production and top quark decays are available. Electroweak production of single top quarks has been searched for. The results from all these analyses, using typically 200/pb of data, are presented.
NuTeV has performed precise measurements of neutral-current to charged-current cross section ratios using intense high energy neutrino and anti-neutrino beams on a primarily steel target at the Fermilab Tevatron. A null hypothesis test of the standard model allows the extraction $\sin^2θ_W^{νN}(\equiv 1-M_W^2/M_Z^2)=0.2277\pm0.0013(stat)\pm0.0009(syst)$, a value that differs from predictions of global electroweak fits by $+3.0σ$.
Results for the complete NLO electroweak corrections to Standard Model Higgs production via gluon fusion are included in the total cross section for hadronic collisions. Artificially large threshold effects are avoided working in the complex-mass scheme. The numerical impact at LHC (Tevatron) energies is explored for Higgs mass values up to 500 GeV (200 GeV). Assuming a complete factorization of the electroweak corrections, one finds a +5 % shift with respect to the NNLO QCD cross section for a Higgs mass of 120 GeV both at the LHC and the Tevatron. Adopting two different factorization schemes…
We present the first observation in hadronic collisions of the electroweak production of vector boson pairs (VV, V=W,Z) where one boson decays to a dijet final state . The data correspond to 3.5 inverse femtobarns of integrated luminosity of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV collected by the CDFII detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We observe 1516+/-239(stat)+/-144(syst) diboson candidate events and measure a cross section sigma(ppbar->VV+X) of 18.0+/-2.8(stat)+/-2.4(syst)+/-1.1(lumi) pb, in agreement with the expectations of the standard model.
Following the confirmation of the top quark discovery at the Tevatron, the next step is to begin studying its properties. Because the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking is of the same order as the measured top mass, the top quark may be very sensitive to new physics. We describe measurements of the total top-antitop cross section, the top-antitop invariant mass, the top transverse momentum distribution, and single top production from Run 1 data at D0 and CDF. All of these measurements will become more precise in Run 2.
We present the most recent precision electroweak measurements of single $W$ and $Z$ boson cross section and properties from the LHC and Tevatron colliders, analyzing data collected by ATLAS, CDF, CMS, D0, and LHCb detectors. The results include the measurement of the single $W$ and $Z$ boson cross section at LHC, the differential cross section measurements, the measurement of $W$ boson mass, the measurement of $W$ and $Z$ charge asymmetry. These measurements provide precision tests on the electroweak theory, high order predictions and the information can be used to constraint parton distributi…
This note presents constraints on Standard Model parameters using published and preliminary precision electroweak results measured at the electron-positron colliders LEP and SLC. The results are compared with precise electroweak measurements from other experiments, notably CDF and DØat the Tevatron. Constraints on the input parameters of the Standard Model are derived from the results obtained in high-$Q^2$ interactions, and used to predict results in low-$Q^2$ experiments, such as atomic parity violation, Møller scattering, and neutrino-nucleon scattering.
This letter presents results on the precision measurement of the top quark mass and a combination of the best CDF top mass measurements. A combination by the TevEWWG (Tevatron electroweak working group) of the best top mass results from CDF and D0 in Run 1 and Run 2 of the Tevatron is also presented. This result is the current world average, and offers an uncertainty less than 1%. The new mass value has been included in traditional LEP EWWG fits to precision electroweak data, and implications for the Standard Model Higgs have been derived.
After many years searching for electroweak production of top quarks, the Tevatron collider experiments have now moved from obtaining first evidence for single top quark production to an impressive array of measurements that test the standard model in several directions. This paper describes measurements of the single top quark cross sections, limits set on the CKM matrix element |Vtb|, searches for production of single top quarks produced via flavor-changing neutral currents and from heavy W-prime and H+ boson resonances, and studies of anomalous Wtb couplings. It concludes with projections fo…
Searches for the electroweak production of single top quarks have been started at the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton collider using Run II data by both the D0 and CDF collaborations. Using a dataset of approximately 160pb^-1, neither experiment finds evidence for Single Top production and sets 95% C.L. upper limits on the production cross section. The D0 limits are 19pb on the s-channel production, 25pb on the t-channel production, and 23pb on the combined s+t-channel production. The CDF limits are 8.5pb on the t-channel production and 13.7pb on the combined s+t-channel production.
