In this work we derive clues to the formation scenario and ionisation source of the lenticular galaxy NGC 3607 by means of metallicity gradients, stellar population and emission lines properties. We work with long-slit spectroscopy from which we (i) study the radial distribution of the equivalent widths of conspicuous metallic absorption features, (ii) infer on the star-formation history (with a stellar population synthesis algorithm), and (iii) investigate the ionisation source responsible for a few strong emission lines. Negative radial gradients are observed for most of the absorption features of NGC 3607. Compared to the external parts, the central region has a deficiency of alpha elements and higher metallicity, which implies different star-formation histories in both regions. At least three star formation episodes are detected, with ages within 1-13 Gyr. The dynamical mass and the $Mg_2$ gradient slope are consistent with mergers being important contributors to the formation mechanism of NGC 3607. Emission-line ratios indicate the presence of a LINER at the centre of NGC 3607. Contribution of hot, old stars to the gas ionisation outside the central region is detected. Evidence drawn from this work suggest small mergers as important contributors to the formation of NGC 3607, a scenario consistent with the star-formation episodes.
We have investigated the stellar population properties in the central regions of a sample of lenticular galaxies with bars and single-exponential outer stellar disks using the data from the SAURON integral-field spectrograph retrieved from the open Isaac Newton Group Archive. We have detected chemically decoupled compact stellar nuclei with a metallicity twice that of the stellar population in the bulges in seven of the eight galaxies. A starburst is currently going on at the center of the eighth galaxy and we have failed to determine the stellar population properties from its spectrum. The me…
Following our study on the incidence, morphology and kinematics of the ionised gas in early-type galaxies we now address the question of what is powering the observed nebular emission. To constrain the likely sources of gas excitation, we resort to a variety of ancillary data, draw from complementary information on the gas kinematics, stellar populations and galactic potential from the SAURON data, and use the SAURON-specific diagnostic diagram juxtaposing the [OIII]/Hb and [NI]/Hb line ratios. We find a tight correlation between the stellar surface brightness and the flux of the Hb recombinat…
Using wide baseline broad-band photometry, we analyse the stellar population properties of a sample of 72 galaxies, spanning a wide range of stellar masses and morphological types, in the nearby spiral-rich and dynamically young galaxy cluster Abell 1367. The sample galaxies are distributed from the cluster centre out to approximately half the cluster Abell radius. The optical/near-infrared colours are compared with simple stellar population synthesis models from which the luminosity-weighted stellar population ages and metallicities are determined. The locus of the colours of elliptical galax…
This is the third paper of a series devoted to study the properties of bars from long slit spectroscopy to understand their formation, evolution and their influence on the evolution of disk galaxies. In this work we aim to determine the gas metallicity distribution of a sample of 20 barred early-type galaxies. We compare the nebular and stellar metallicity distributions to conclude about the origin of the warm gas. We compare the results of nebular emission metallicities using different semi-empirical methods. We carry out AGN diagnostic diagrams along the radius to determine the radius of inf…
The gas-phase and stellar metallicities have proven to be important parameters to constrain the star formation history of galaxies. However, HII regions associated with recent star-formation may not have abundances typical for the galaxy as a whole and it is believed that the bulk of the metals may be contained in the neutral gas. It is therefore important to directly probe the metal abundances in the neutral gas, which can be done by using absorption lines imprinted on a background quasar. Recently, we have presented studies of the stellar content of a small sample of such quasar absorbers wi…
Context. We carry out a detailed 2D study of the ionised gas in the local universe galaxy UGC9837. In nearby galaxies, like the galaxy in question here, the spatial distribution of the physical properties can be studied in detail, providing benchmarks for galaxy formation models. Aims. Our aim is to derive detailed and spatially resolved physical properties of the ionised gas of UGC 9837. In addition, we derive an integrated spectrum of the galaxy and study how varying spatial coverage affects the derived integrated properties. We also study how the same properties would be seen if the galaxy …
We present VIMOS integral field spectroscopy of the brightest radio-quiet QSO on the southern sky HE 1029-1401 at a redshift of z=0.086. Standard decomposition techniques for broad-band imaging are extended to integral field data in order to deblend the QSO and host emission. We perform a tentative analysis of the stellar continuum finding a young stellar population (<100Myr) or a featureless continuum embedded in an old stellar population (10Gyr) typical for a massive elliptical galaxy. The stellar velocity dispersion of sigma_*=320\pm90 km/s and the estimated black hole mass log(M_BH/M_sun)=…
A new method for spectroscopic bulge-disc decomposition is presented, in which the spatial light profile in a two-dimensional spectrum is decomposed wavelength-by-wavelength into bulge and disc components, allowing separate one-dimensional spectra for each component to be constructed. This method has been applied to observations of a sample of nine S0s in the Fornax Cluster in order to obtain clean high-quality spectra of their individual bulge and disc components. So far this decomposition has only been fully successful when applied to galaxies with clean light profiles, consequently limiting…
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have typically been discovered in massive galaxies of high metallicity. We attempt to increase the number of AGN candidates in low metallicity galaxies. We present VLT/UVES and archival VLT/FORS1 spectroscopic and NTT/SUSI2 photometric observations of the low-metallicity emission-line galaxy Tol 2240-384 and perform a detailed study of its morphology, chemical composition, and emission-line profiles. We determine abundances of nitrogen, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar, and Fe by analyzing the fluxes of narrow components of the emission lines using empirical methods. We verify wi…
We present adaptive optics assisted, spatially resolved spectroscopy of a sample of nine H-alpha-selected galaxies at z=0.84--2.23 drawn from the HiZELS narrow-band survey. These galaxies have star-formation rates of 1-27Mo/yr and are therefore representative of the typical high-redshift star-forming population. Our ~kpc-scale resolution observations show that approximately half of the sample have dynamics suggesting that the ionised gas is in large, rotating disks. We model their velocity fields to infer the inclination-corrected, asymptotic rotational velocities. We use the absolute B-band m…
[Abridged] We present ground-based MDM V-band and Spitzer/IRAC 3.6um-band photometric observations of the 72 representative galaxies of the SAURON Survey. In combination with the SAURON stellar velocity dispersion measured within an effective radius (se), this allows us to explore the location of our galaxies in the main scaling relations. We investigate the dependence of these relations on our recent kinematical classification of early-type galaxies (i.e. Slow/Fast Rotators) and the stellar populations. Slow Rotator and Fast Rotator E/S0 galaxies do not populate distinct locations in the scal…
We use Gamma-ray burst (GRB) spectra total continuum absorption to estimate the key intergalactic medium (IGM) properties of hydrogen column density ($\mathit{N}\textsc{hxigm}$), metallicity, temperature and ionisation parameter over a redshift range of $1.6 \leq z \leq 6.3$, using photo-ionisation (PIE) and collisional ionisation equilibrium (CIE) models for the ionised plasma. We use more realistic host metallicity, dust corrected where available, in generating the host absorption model, assuming that the host intrinsic hydrogen column density is equal to the measured ionisation corrected in…
We report the results of a multi-wavelength study of the nearby galaxy group, Abell 3581 (z=0.0218). This system hosts the most luminous cool core of any nearby group and exhibits active radio mode feedback from the super-massive black hole in its brightest group galaxy, IC 4374. The brightest galaxy has suffered multiple active galactic nucleus outbursts, blowing bubbles into the surrounding hot gas, which have resulted in the uplift of cool ionised gas into the surrounding hot intragroup medium. High velocities, indicative of an outflow, are observed close to the nucleus and coincident with …
We use a combination of deep optical and near-infrared light profiles for a morphologically diverse sample of Virgo cluster galaxies to study the radially-resolved stellar populations of cluster galaxies over a wide range of galaxy structure. We find that, in the median, the age gradients of Virgo galaxies are either flat (lenticulars and Sa-Sb spirals) or positive (ellipticals, Sbc+Sc spirals, gas-rich dwarfs, and irregulars), while all galaxy types have a negative median metallicity gradient. Comparison of the galaxy stellar population diagnostics (age, metallicity, and gradients thereof) ag…
We present the first results of a pilot study aimed at understanding the influence of bars on the evolution of galaxy discs through the study of their stellar content. We examine here the kinematics, star formation history, mass-weighted, luminosity-weighted, and single stellar population (SSP) equivalent ages and metallicities for four galaxies ranging from lenticulars to late-type spirals. The data employed extends to 2-3 disc scalelengths, with S/N(A)>50. Several techniques are explored to derive star formation histories and SSP-equivalent parameters, each of which are shown to be compatibl…
Atomic fine structure lines have been detected in the local Universe and at high redshifts over the past decades. The [C II] emission line at 158 $μ$m is an important observable as it provides constraints on the interstellar medium (ISM) cooling processes. We develop a physically motivated framework to simulate the production of far-infrared line emission from galaxies in a cosmological context. This first paper sets out our methodology and describes its first application, simulating the [C II] 158 $μ$m line emission in the local Universe. We combine the output from EAGLE cosmological hydrodyn…
The validity of the emission line luminosity vs. ionised gas velocity dispersion ($L - σ$) correlation for HII galaxies (HIIGx), and its potential as an accurate distance estimator are assessed. For a sample of 128 local ($0.02\lesssim z\lesssim 0.2$) compact HIIGx with high equivalent widths of their Balmer emission lines we obtained ionised gas velocity dispersion from high S/N high-dispersion spectroscopy (Subaru-HDS and ESO VLT-UVES) and integrated H$β$ fluxes from low dispersion wide aperture spectrophotometry. We find that the $L - σ$ relation is strong and stable against restrictions in…
Lenticular galaxies are believed to form by a combination of environmental effects and secular evolution. We study the nearby disc-dominated S0 galaxy NGC 6340 photometrically and spectroscopically to understand the mechanisms of S0 formation and evolution in groups. We use SDSS images to build colour maps and light profile of NGC 6340 which we decompose using a three-component model including Sersic and two exponential profiles. We also use Spitzer images to study the morphology of regions containing warm ISM and dust. Then, we re-process and re-analyse deep long-slit spectroscopic data for N…
We study the evolution of atomic and molecular gas in galaxies in semi-analytic models of galaxy formation that include new modeling of the partitioning of cold gas in galactic discs into atomic, molecular, and ionised phases. We adopt two scenarios for the formation of molecules: one pressure-based and one metallicity-based. We find that both recipes successfully reproduce the gas fractions and gas-to-stellar mass ratios of HI and H2 in local galaxies,as well as the HI and H2 disc sizes up to z<2. We reach good agreement with the locally observed HI and H2 mass function, although both recipes…
There is overwhelming evidence that the Milky Way has formed its stars at a rel- atively constant rate throughout the Hubble time. This implies that its stock of cold gas was not in place since the beginning but it has been acquired slowly through gas accretion. The gas accretion must have been at low metallicity in order to reconcile the metallicities observed in the disc with the predictions of chemical evolution models. But how does this gas accretion take place? I review the current evidence of gas accretion into the Milky Way and similar galaxies through the infall of cold gas clouds and …
We study the physical properties of a homogeneous sample of 157 optically-thick absorption line systems at redshifts ~1.8-4.4, selected from a high-dispersion spectroscopic survey of Lyman limit systems (LLSs). By means of multiple ionisation models and Bayesian techniques, we derive the posterior probability distribution functions for the density, metallicity, temperature, and dust content of the absorbing gas. We find that z>2 LLSs are highly ionised with ionisation parameters between -3<log U<-2, depending on the HI column density. LLSs are characterised by low temperatures (T<5x10^4 K) and…
(abridged) Our goal is to describe the multi-phase ISM of the IR bright low-metallicity galaxy Haro 11, dissecting the photoionised and photodissociated gas components. We present observations of the mid- and far-IR fine-structure cooling lines obtained with the Spitzer/IRS and Herschel/PACS spectrometers. We use the spectral synthesis code Cloudy to methodically model the ionised and neutral gas from which these lines originate. We find that the mid- and far-IR lines account for ~1% of the total IR luminosity L_TIR. Haro 11 is undergoing a phase of intense star formation, as traced by the bri…
EIGER II. first spectroscopic characterisation of the young stars and ionised gas associated with strong H$β$ and [OIII] line-emission in galaxies at z=5-7 with JWST
The Herschel Dwarf Galaxy Survey investigates the interplay of star formation activity and the the metal-poor gas and dust of dwarf galaxies using FIR and submillimetre imaging spectroscopic and photometric observations in the 50 to 550mu window of the Herschel Space Observatory. The dust SEDs are well constrained with the new Herschel and MIR Spitzer data. A submillimetre excess is often found in low metallicity galaxies, which,if tracing very cold dust, would highlight large dust masses not easily reconciled in some cases, given the low metallicities and expected gas-to-dust mass ratios. The…
We investigate the metallicity evolution and content of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and galactic halo gas from z=2->0 using 110-million particle cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. We focus on the detectability and physical properties of UV resonance metal-line absorbers observable with Hubble's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). We confirm that galactic superwind outflows are required to enrich the IGM to observed levels down to z=0 using three wind prescriptions contrasted to a no-wind simulation. Our favoured momentum-conserved wind prescription deposits metals closer to galaxies owin…
(abridged) Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) occur in galaxies of generally low metallicity. We aim at a spectroscopic analysis of HG 031203, the host galaxy of a LRGB burst, to obtain its properties. Based on VLT/X-shooter spectroscopic observations in the wavelength range 3200-24000A, we use standard direct methods to evaluate physical conditions and element abundances. The resolving power of the instrument also allowed us to trace the kinematics of the ionised gas. We derive an interstellar oxygen abundance of 12+logO/H=8.20+/-0.03. The observed fluxes of hydrogen lines correspond to t…
We use the photon flux and absorption tracer algorithm presented in Katz et al.~2018, to characterise the contribution of haloes of different mass and stars of different age and metallicity to the reionization of the Universe. We employ a suite of cosmological multifrequency radiation hydrodynamics AMR simulations that are carefully calibrated to reproduce a realistic reionization history and galaxy properties at $z \geq 6$. In our simulations, haloes with mass $10^9{\rm M_{\odot}}h^{-1}<M<10^{10}{\rm M_{\odot}}h^{-1}$, stars with metallicity $10^{-3}Z_{\odot}<Z<10^{-1.5}Z_{\odot}$, and stars …
The massive stars that ionised the Universe have short lifetimes and can only be studied near the time of formation, but any low mass stars that formed contemporaneously might be observable in the local Universe today. We study the abundance pattern and spatial distribution of these `siblings of reionizers' (SoRs) in the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. SoRs tend to be enriched to super-solar levels in $α$-elements compared to iron. In {\sc eagle} galaxies resembling the Milky Way, $\sim 40$ percent of carbon-enhanced metal poor (CEMP) stars are SoRs. Conversely, $\sim 10$ percent…

We present results from our Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) HI, Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT) Halpha, 1m Sampurnanand Telescope (ST) and 1.3m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope (DFOT) deep optical observations of NGC 7805/6 (Arp 112) system to test KUG 2359+311's tidal dwarf galaxy (TDG) candidacy and explore the properties of the interacting system. Our GMRT HI map shows no HI detection associated with KUG 2359+311, nor any HI tail or bridge-like structure connecting KUG 2359+311 to the NGC 7805/6 system. Our HCT Halpha image on the other hand, shows strong detections in KUG 2359+311…
