Spectral moment sum rules are presented for the inhomogeneous many-body problem described by the fermionic Falicov-Kimball or Hubbard models. These local sum rules allow for arbitrary hoppings, site energies, and interactions. They can be employed to quantify the accuracy of numerical solutions to the inhomogeneous many-body problem like strongly correlated multilayered devices, ultracold atoms in an optical lattice with a trap potential, strongly correlated systems that are disordered, or systems with nontrivial spatial ordering like a charge density wave or a spin density wave. We also show how the spectral moment sum rules determine the asymptotic behavior of the Green function, self-energy, and dynamical mean field, when applied to the dynamical mean-field theory solution of the many body problem. In particular, we illustrate in detail how one can dramatically reduce the number of Matsubara frequencies needed to solve the Falicov-Kimball model, while still retaining high precision, and we sketch how one can incorporate these results into Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo solvers for the Hubbard (or more complicated) models. Since the solution of inhomogeneous problems is significantly more time consuming than periodic systems, efficient use of these sum rules can provide a dramatic speed up in the computational time required to solve the many-body problem. We also discuss how these sum rules behave in nonequilibrium situations as well, where the Hamiltonian has explicit time dependence due to a driving field or due to the time-dependent change of a parameter like the interaction strength or the origin of the trap potential.
We show that single-component fermionic polar molecules confined to a 2D geometry and dressed by a microwave field, may acquire an attractive $1/r^3$ dipole-dipole interaction leading to superfluid p-wave pairing at sufficiently low temperatures even in the BCS regime. The emerging state is the topological $p_x+ip_y$ phase promising for topologically protected quantum information processing. The main decay channel is via collisional transitions to dressed states with lower energies and is rather slow, setting a lifetime of the order of seconds at 2D densities $\sim 10^8$ cm$^{-2}$.
We study theoretically many-body equilibrium magnetic phases and corresponding thermodynamic characteristics of ultracold three-component fermionic mixtures in optical lattices described by the SU(3)-symmetric single-band Hubbard model. Our analysis is based on the generalization of the exact diagonalization solver for multicomponent mixtures that is used in the framework of the dynamical mean-field theory. It allows us to obtain a finite-temperature phase diagram with the corresponding transition lines to magnetically ordered phases at filling one particle per site (1/3 band filling) in simpl…
We study finite-temperature properties of ultracold four-component mixtures of alkaline-earth-like atoms in optical lattices that can be effectively described by the two-band spin-$1/2$ Hubbard model including the Hund's exchange coupling term. Our main goal is to investigate the effect of exchange interactions on finite-temperature magnetic phases for a wide range of lattice fillings. We use the dynamical mean-field theory approach and its real-space generalization to obtain finite-temperature phase diagrams including transitions to magnetically-ordered phases. It allows to determine optimal …
We study a class of SU(N) Heisenberg models, describing Mott insulators of fermionic ultra-cold alkaline earth atoms on the three-dimensional simple cubic lattice. Based on an earlier semiclassical analysis, magnetic order is unlikely, and we focus instead on a solvable large-N limit designed to address the competition among non-magnetic ground states. We find a rich phase diagram as a function of the filling parameter k, composed of a variety of ground states spontaneously breaking lattice symmetries, and in some cases also time reversal symmetry. One particularly striking example is a state …
We propose a minimal model to study the real-time dynamics of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ lattice gauge theory coupled to fermionic matter in a cold atom quantum simulator setup. We show that dynamical correlators of the gauge fields can be measured in experiments studying the time-evolution of two pairs of impurities, and suggest the protocol for implementing the model in cold atom experiments. Further, we discuss a number of unexpected features found in the integrable limit of the model, as well as its extensions to a non-integrable case. A potential experimental implementation of our model in the latt…
We study Mott insulators of fermionic alkaline earth atoms, described by Heisenberg spin models with enhanced SU(N) symmetry. In dramatic contrast to SU(2) magnetism, more than two spins are required to form a singlet. On the square lattice, the classical ground state is highly degenerate and magnetic order is thus unlikely. In a large-N limit, we find a chiral spin liquid ground state with topological order and Abelian fractional statistics. We discuss its experimental detection. Chiral spin liquids with non-Abelian anyons may also be realizable with alkaline earth atoms.
We present a pairing fluctuation theory which self-consistently incorporates finite momentum pair excitations in the context of BCS--Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover, and we apply this theory to high $T_c$ superconductors and ultracold Fermi gases. There are strong similarities between Fermi gases in the unitary regime and high Tc superconductors. Here we address key issues of common interest, especially the pseudogap. In the Fermi gases we summarize recent experiments including various phase diagrams (with and without population imbalance), as well as evidence for a pseudogap in the…
We investigate the zero-temperature phase diagram of two-orbital SU(N) fermionic models at incommensurate filling which are directly relevant to strontium and ytterbium ultracold atoms loading into a one-dimensional optical lattice. Using a low-energy approach that takes into account explicitly the SU(N) symmetry, we find that a spectral gap for the nuclear-spin degrees of freedom is formed for generic interactions. Several phases with one or two gapless modes are then stabilized which describe the competition between different density instabilities. In stark contrast to the N=2 case, no domin…
We examine the phase diagram of a simple-cubic optical lattice half-filled by two species of fermionic atoms with a repulsive s-wave contact interaction. We use the Hartree approximation in the regime of weaker interactions, and a Hubbard model approximation in the Mott insulating phase. The regime where the Neel phase of this system is likely to be most accessible to experiments is at intermediate lattice strengths and interactions, and our two approximations agree fairly well in this regime. We discuss the various issues that may determine where in this phase diagram the Neel phase is first …
In order to describe unbalanced ultracold fermionic quantum gases on optical lattices in a harmonic trap, we investigate an attractive ($U<0$) asymmetric ($t_\uparrow\neq t_\downarrow$) Hubbard model with a Zeeman-like magnetic field. In view of the model's spatial inhomogeneity, we focus in this paper on the solution at Hartree-Fock level. The Hartree-Fock Hamiltonian is diagonalized with particular emphasis on superfluid phases. For the special case of spin-independent hopping we analytically determine the number of solutions of the resulting self-consistency equations and the nature of the …
Ultracold atomic gases are a powerful tool to experimentally study strongly correlated quantum many-body systems. In particular, ultracold Fermi gases with tunable interactions have allowed to realize the famous BEC-BCS crossover from a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of molecules to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid of weakly bound Cooper pairs. However, large parts of the excitation spectrum of fermionic superfluids in the BEC-BCS crossover are still unexplored. In this work, we use Bragg spectroscopy to measure the full momentum-resolved low-energy excitation spectrum of strongly …
It is now possible to study experimentally the combined effect of disorder and interactions in cold atom physics. Motivated by these developments we investigate the dynamics around the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in a one-dimensional (1D) Fermi gas with short-range interactions in a quasiperiodic potential by the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group (tDMRG) technique. By tuning disorder and interactions we study the MIT from the weakly to the strongly interacting limit. The MIT is not universal as time evolution, well described by a process of anomalous diffusion, depends q…
he BCS-like pairing in ultracold fermionic atomic ($UCFAG$) gases is studied in the model of "isotopic-spin" pairing proposed in 1991 \cite% {Ku-Hof-SSC}. This model assumes a mismatch ($δ$) in chemical potentials of pairing fermionic atoms. It is shown that a $π$-Josephson junction can be realized in $UCFAG$ systems, where the left and right banks $% S$ are the $UCFAG$ superfluids. The weak link $M$ consists from the normal $% UCFAG$ with the finite mismatch $δ$. If the $π$-junction is a part of a closed ring the superfluid mass-current flows spontaneously in the ring, i.e., the time-reversal…
We investigate evolution of the quantum coherence in the ultracold mixture of fermionic atoms and bosonic dimer molecules. Interactions are there experimentally controlled via tuning the external magnetic field. Consequently, the fermionic atoms and their bosonic counterparts can be driven to a behavior resembling the usual BCS to BEC crossover. We analyze in some detail how this quantum coherence evolves with respect to time upon a smooth and abrupt sweep across the Feshbach resonance inducing the atom-molecule quantum fluctuations.
We discuss a platform for the synthetic realization of key physical properties of helical Tomonaga Luttinger liquids (HTLLs) with ultracold fermionic atoms in one-dimensional optical lattices. The HTLL is a strongly correlated metallic state where spin polarization and propagation direction of the itinerant particles are locked to each other. We propose an unconventional one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model which, at quarter filling, resembles the HTLL in the long wavelength limit, as we demonstrate with a combination of analytical (bosonization) and numerical (density matrix renormalization gr…
Based on a generalized one-band Hubbard model, we study magnetic properties of Mott insulating states for ultracold spin-3/2 fermionic atoms in optical lattices. When the \textit{s}-wave scattering lengths for the total spin $S=2,0$ satisfy conditions $a_{2}>a_{0}>0$, we apply a functional integral approach to the half filled case, where the spin-quadrupole fluctuations dominate. On a 2D square lattice, the saddle point solution yields a staggered spin-quadrupole ordering at zero temperature with symmetry breaking from SO(5) to SO(4). Both spin and spin-quadrupole static structure factors are …
We propose to realize one-dimensional topological phases protected by SU($N$) symmetry using alkali or alkaline-earth atoms loaded into a bichromatic optical lattice. We derive a realistic model for this system and investigate it theoretically. Depending on the parity of $N$, two different classes of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are stabilized at half-filling for physical parameters of the model. For even $N$, the celebrated spin-1 Haldane phase and its generalization to SU($N$) are obtained with no local symmetry breaking. In stark contrast, at least for $N=3$, a new class of S…
We consider a weakly-interacting fermionic gas of alkali-metal atoms characterized by two hyper- fine states which are Rabi coupled. By using a Hartree approximation for the repulsive interaction we determine the zero-temperature equation of state of this Fermi gas in D spatial dimensions (D = 1, 2, 3). Then, adopting the Landau-Vlasov equation and hydrodynamic equations, we investi- gate the speed of first sound and zero sound. We show that the two sounds, which occur respectively in collisional and collisionless regimes, crucially depend on the interplay between interaction strength and Rabi…
We discuss the occupation number correlations in an ultracold system of interacting fermionic atoms. For a system with a special energy-level distribution, viz. two multiply-degenerate levels, explicit expressions for the correlation functions are derived in a canonical approach using the exact ground state wavefunction of the reduced BCS Hamiltonian. We evaluate the correlators numerically for different interaction strength and find analytical expressions in some limiting cases. Due to the underlying fermionic nature of the pairs the occupations are predominantly anti-correlated and their sta…
Ternary flavor mixtures of ultracold fermionic atoms in an optical lattice are studied in the case of equal, repulsive on-site interactions U>0. The corresponding SU(3) invariant Hubbard model is solved numerically exactly within dynamical mean-field theory using multigrid Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We establish Mott transitions close to integer filling at low temperatures and show that the associated signatures in the compressibility and pair occupancy persist to high temperatures, i.e., should be accessible to experiments. In addition, we present spectral functions and discu…
Pairing of mobile charge carriers in doped antiferromagnets plays a key role in the emergence of unconventional superconductivity. In these strongly correlated materials, the pairing mechanism is often assumed to be mediated by magnetic correlations, in contrast to phonon-mediated interactions in conventional superconductors. A precise understanding of the underlying mechanism in real materials is, however, still lacking, and has been driving experimental and theoretical research for the past 40 years. Early theoretical studies established the emergence of binding among dopants in ladder syste…
A fully self-consistent calculation of the bosonic dynamics of the Hubbard model is developed within the Composite Operator Method. From one side we consider a basic set of fermionic composite operators (Hubbard fields) and calculate the retarded propagators. On the other side we consider a basic set of bosonic composite operators (charge, spin and pair) and calculate the causal propagators. The equations for the Green's functions (GF) (retarded and causal), studied in the polar approximation, are coupled and depend on a set of parameters not determined by the dynamics. First, the pair sector …

We investigate the fermionic SU(N) Hubbard model on the two-dimensional square lattice for weak to moderate interaction strengths using one-loop renormalization group and mean-field methods. For the repulsive case U>0 at half filling and small N the dominant tendency is towards breaking of the SU(N) symmetry. For N>6 staggered flux order takes over as the dominant instability, in agreement with the large-N limit. Away from half filling for N=3 the system rearranges the particle densities such that two flavors remain half filled by cannibalizing the third flavor. In the attractive case and odd …
The finite duration of the collisions in Fermionic systems as expressed by the retardation time in non-Markovian Levinson-type kinetic equations is discussed in the quasiclassical limit. We separate individual contributions included in the memory effect resulting in (i) off-shell tails of the Wigner distribution, (ii) renormalization of scattering rates and (iii) of the single-particle energy, (iv) collision delay and (v) related non-local corrections to the scattering integral. In this way we transform the Levinson equation into the Landau-Silin equation extended by the non-local corrections …
We explore theoretically the novel superfluidity of harmonically-trapped polarized ultracold fermionic atoms in a two-dimensional (2D) optical lattice by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. The pairing amplitude is found to oscillate along the radial direction at low particle density and along the angular direction at high density. The former is consistent with the existing experiments and the latter is a newly predicted Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, which can be tested in experiments.
We study fermionic atoms of three different internal quantum states (colors) in an optical lattice, which are interacting through attractive on site interactions, U<0. Using a variational calculation for equal color densities and small couplings, |U| < |U_C|, a color superfluid state emerges with a tendency to domain formation. For |U| > |U_C|, triplets of atoms with different colors form singlet fermions (trions). These phases are the analogies of the color superconducting and baryonic phases in QCD. In ultracold fermions, this transition is found to be of second order. Our results demonstrat…
We show that ultracold atoms can be controlled in multi-band optical lattices through spatially periodic Raman pulses for investigation of a class of strongly correlated physics related to the Kondo problem. The underlying dynamics of this system is described by a spin-dependent fermionic or bosonic Kondo-Hubbard lattice model even if we have only spin-independent atomic collision interaction. We solve the bosonic Kondo-Hubbard lattice model through a mean-field approximation, and the result shows a clear phase transition from the ferromagnetic superfluid to the Kondo-signet insulator at the i…
To investigate ultracold fermionic atoms of three internal states (colors) in an optical lattice, subject to strong attractive interaction, we study the attractive three-color Hubbard model in infinite dimensions by using a variational approach. We find a quantum phase transition between a weak-coupling superconducting phase and a strong-coupling trionic phase where groups of three atoms are bound to a composite fermion. We show how the Gutzwiller variational theory can be reformulated in terms of an effective field theory with three-body interactions and how this effective field theory can be…
We discuss the possibility of a quantum phase transition in ultracold spin polarized fermionic gases which exhibit a p-wave Feshbach resonace. We show that when fermionic atoms form a condensate that can be externally tuned between the BCS and BEC limits, the zero temperature compressibility and the spin susceptibility of the fermionic gas are non-analytic functions of the two-body bound state energy. This non-analyticity is due to a massive rearrangement of the momentum distribution in the ground state of the system. Furthermore, we show that the low temperature superfluid density is also non…
