The MAGIC telescope observed the region around the distant blazar 3C 66A for 54.2 hr in 2007 August-December. The observations resulted in the discovery of a gamma-ray source centered at celestial coordinates R.A. = 2h23m12s and decl.= 43deg 0.7arcmin (MAGIC J0223+430), coinciding with the nearby radio galaxy 3C 66B. A possible association of the excess with the blazar 3C 66A is discussed. The energy spectrum of MAGIC J0223+430 follows a power law with a normalization of (1.7+-0.3_stat+-0.6_syst) x 10^-11 TeV^-1 cm-2 s-1 at 300 GeV and a photon index of 3.10+-0.31_stat+-0:2syst.
Observations by HAWC and Milagro have detected spatially extended TeV sources surrounding middle-aged ($t\sim100-400 \,{\rm kyr}$) pulsars like Geminga and PSR B0656+14, which have been named "TeV Halos", representing very extended TeV pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) powered by relatively old pulsars. A few more HAWC-detected sources have been suggested to be TeV halo candidates. In this paper, we search for possible GeV counterparts of three TeV halo candidates with Fermi Large Area Telescopes. We detect a new spatially extended GeV source in the vicinity of the TeV halo candidate 2HWC J1912+099, …
The nearly isotropic distribution of the TeV-PeV neutrinos recently detected by IceCube suggests that they come from sources at distance beyond our Galaxy, but how far they are is largely unknown due to lack of any associations with known sources. In this paper, we propose that the cumulative TeV gamma-ray emission accompanying the production of neutrinos can be used to constrain the distance of these neutrino sources, since the opacity of TeV gamma rays due to absorption by the extragalactic background light (EBL) depends on the distance that these TeV gamma rays have travelled. As the diffus…
The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) has revealed many TeV (10 12 eV) gamma-ray sources along the Galactic Plane and around 30 percent of these sources remain unidentified. The morphology and dynamics of dense gas coincident and surrounding the gamma-ray emission can provide clues about the nature of the TeV emission. The H2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) undertaken with the Mopra radio telescope, includes several dense gas tracers, such as NH3 (n,n) transitions and HC3N (3-2), star formation tracers including H2O masers, and radio recombination lines which trace ionised gas.…
The possibility of estimating the mass composition of primary cosmic rays above the knee of its energy spectrum through the study of high energy gamma rays, muons and neutrinos produced in the interactions of cosmic rays with the solar ambient matter and radiation has been explored. It is found that the theoretical fluxes of TeV gamma rays, muons and neutrinos from a region around $15^{o}$ of the Sun are sensitive to mass composition of cosmic rays in the PeV energy range. The experimental prospects for detection of such TeV gamma rays/neutrinos by future experiments are discussed.
The resolution power of current Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes is presently restricted to scales of a few arcminutes. In the very high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray regime, the measurement of source sizes that are comparable to or smaller than the resolution of the instrument is usually limited by statistics and in particular by the uncertainties in the characterisation of the instrument Point Spread Function (PSF). The PSF varies strongly with observation and instrument conditions, demanding time-dependent simulations of these conditions. Employing such simulations, we substan…
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory is a wide-field-of-view gamma-ray observatory that is optimized to detect gamma rays between ~300 GeV and several hundred TeV. The HAWC Collaboration recently released their third source catalog (3HWC), which contains 65 sources. One of these sources, the ultra-high-energy gamma-ray source 3HWC J1908+063, may exhibit a hardening of the spectral index at the highest energies (above 56 TeV). At least two populations of particles are needed to satisfactorily explain the highest energy emission. This second component could be leptonic or hadroni…
The diffuse flux of cosmic neutrinos has been measured by the IceCube Observatory from TeV to PeV energies. We show that an improved characterization of this flux at the lower energies, TeV and sub-TeV, reveals important information on the nature of the astrophysical neutrino sources in a model-independent way. Most significantly, it could confirm the present indications that neutrinos originate in cosmic environments that are optically thick to GeV-TeV $γ$-rays. This conclusion will become inevitable if a steeper or even uninterrupted neutrino power law is observed in the TeV region. In such …
We present the first catalogs of the highest-energy (above 56 TeV and 100 TeV) gamma-ray sources seen by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory. The wide field-of-view of HAWC naturally lends itself to unbiased all-sky surveys and newly developed event-by-event gamma-ray energy reconstruction algorithms have allowed unprecedented energy resolution. The sources presented here are the highest-energy sources ever detected. All are coincident with known lower-energy gamma-ray sources within our Galaxy. These objects may have implications for the sources of Galactic cosmic rays; since…
Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes have revealed more than 100 TeV sources along the Galactic Plane, around 45% of them remain unidentified. However, radio observations revealed that dense molecular clumps are associated with 67% of 18 unidentified TeV sources. In this paper, we propose that an electron-positron magnetospheric accelerator emits detectable TeV gamma-rays when a rapidly rotating black hole enters a gaseous cloud. Since the general-relativistic effect plays an essential role in this magnetospheric lepton accelerator scenario, the emissions take place in the direct vicinity …
HESS J1614$-$518 and HESS J1616$-$508 are two tera-electron volt (TeV) $γ$-ray sources that are not firmly associated with any known counterparts at other wavelengths. We investigate the distribution of interstellar medium towards the TeV $γ$-ray sources using results from a 7 mm-wavelength Mopra study, the Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey, the Millimetre Astronomer's Legacy Team - 45 GHz survey and [CI] data from the HEAT telescope. Data in the CO(1$-$0) transition lines reveal diffuse gas overlapping the two TeV sources at several velocities along the line of sight, while observations…
MGRO J1908+06 is a bright, extended TeV gamma-ray source located near the Galactic plane. The TeV emission has previously been attributed to the pulsar wind nebula of the radio-faint gamma-ray pulsar PSR J1907+0602 discovered with Fermi. However, studies of the TeV morphology with VERITAS have shown that MGRO J1908+06 is somewhat larger than other pulsar wind nebulae of similar age and that the TeV spectrum does not soften with distance from the pulsar as is observed for other pulsar wind nebulae. Although MGRO J1908+06 is very bright in gamma rays with a flux corresponding to ~80% of the Crab…
We present multiwavelength studies of a TeV gamma-ray source VER J2016+371 suggested to be associated with a supernova remnant CTB 87 (G74.9+1.2) and based on X-ray and radio morphologies, CTB 87 is identified as an evolved pulsar wind nebula. A source in the vicinity of VER J2016+371 is also detected at GeV energies by Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope suggesting a likely counterpart at GeV energies. We find that a broken power-law (BPL) distribution of electrons can explain the observed data at radio, X-ray and TeV energies, however, is not sufficient to explain the data at MeV--GeV energies. …

We present a systematic study of the TeV gamma-ray spectrum for the sources in the 2HWC HAWC catalog. Three spectrum models are considered in the analysis: simple power law, power law with exponential cut-off and a log-parabola. A comparison of the test statistic of nested models was performed in order to look for the best description. We used gamma-ray sky maps of 17 and 25 months of HAWC data. From the analysis, only three sources of the catalog deviate from simple power law spectrum with high significance. The corresponding parameters are given in each case.
The total cosmic ray electron spectrum (electrons plus positrons) exhibits a break at a particle energy of $\sim 1\rm~TeV$ and extends without any attenuation up to $\rm \sim 20~ TeV $. Synchrotron and inverse Compton energy losses strongly constrain both the age and the distance of the potential sources of TeV and multi-TeV electrons to $\rm\approx 10^5~yr$ and $\rm \approx 100-500~pc$, depending on both the absolute value and energy dependence of the cosmic ray diffusion coefficient. This suggests that only a few, or just one nearby discrete source may explain the observed spectrum of high e…
The HAWC observatory recently published their second source catalog with 39 very high energy gamma-ray sources based on 507 days of exposure time. Among these, there were 16 sources that are more than one degree away from any known TeV source. We studied 13 of these 16 sources with VERITAS and \textit{Fermi}-LAT data. VERITAS, an array of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes observing gamma rays with energies higher than 85 GeV, can provide a more detailed image of the source with much shorter exposure time and with better angular resolution. With \textit{Fermi}-LAT data, we searched …
The High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory recently published the discovery of SS 433 as a TeV source, reporting the observation of multi-TeV gamma-ray emission from the jet interaction regions e1 and w1, suggesting in-situ particle acceleration. This showed the first direct evidence of acceleration in jets at energies greater than a few TeV. SS 433 was the first microquasar to be discovered and is still considered special in that the accretion is supercritical and the luminosity of the system is very high ($\sim10^{40}$ erg s$^{-2}$). The lobes of the supernova remnant W 50 in which…
The Galactic Center region hosts a variety of powerful astronomical sources and rare astrophysical processes that emit a large flux of non-thermal radiation. We present the analysis of the very-high-energy gamma-ray emission above 2 TeV of the region around the Galactic Center known as the Central Molecular Zone using 125 hours of data taken with the VERITAS imaging-atmospheric Cherenkov telescope between 2010 and 2018. This analysis employs new shower reconstruction algorithms and instrument response functions optimized for data taken at large zenith angles such as the Galactic Center sources…
The H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey (HGPS) revealed 78 TeV sources among which 47 are not clearly associated with a known object. We present a multiwavelength approach to constrain the origin of the emission from unidentified HGPS sources. We present a generic pipeline that explores a large database of multiwavelength archival data toward any region in the Galactic plane. Along with a visual inspection of the retrieved multiwavelength observations to search for faint and uncataloged counterparts, we derive a radio spectral index that helps disentangle thermal from nonthermal emission and a mean…
eHWC J2019+368 is one of the sources emitting $γ$-rays with energies higher than 100 TeV based on the recent measurement with the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory (HAWC), and the origin is still in debate. The pulsar PSR J2021$+$3651 is spatially coincident with the TeV source. We investigate theoretically whether the multiband nonthermal emission of eHWC J2019+368 can originate from the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) G75.2$+$0.1 powered by PSR J2021$+$3651. In the model, the spin-down power of the pulsar is transferred to high-energy particles and magnetic field in the nebula. As the parti…
We model the contribution of the nearest young supernova remannt Vela to the local cosmic ray flux taking into account both the influence of the Local Superbubble and the effect of anisotropic diffusion. The dominant contribution of this source in the energy region around the cosmic ray knee can naturally explain the observed fluxes of individual groups of nuclei and their total flux. Adding the CR flux from a 2-3 Myr old local CR source suggested earlier, the CR spectra in the whole energy range between 200 GeV and the transition to extragalactic CRs are described well by the combined fluxes …
Blazars and in particular the subclass of high synchrotron peaked Active Galactic Nuclei are among the main targets for the present generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) and will remain of great importance for very high-energy $γ$-ray science in the era of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). Observations by IACTs, which have relatively small fields of view ($\sim$ few degrees), are limited by viewing conditions; therefore, it is important to select the most promising targets in order to increase the number of detections. The aim of this paper is to search for unclassi…
We present a detailed analysis of the interstellar medium towards the TeV $γ$-ray sources HESS J1640$-$465 and HESS J1641$-$463 using results from the Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey and from a Mopra 7 mm-wavelength study. The $γ$-ray sources are positionally coincident with two supernova remnants G338.3$-$0.0 and G338.5+0.1 respectively. A bright complex of HII regions connect the two SNRs and TeV objects. Observations in the CO(1-0) transition lines reveal substantial amounts of diffuse gas positionally coincident with the $γ$-ray sources at multiple velocities along the line of sigh…
Gamma-ray observations have recently shifted the focus to higher and higher energies, with capable ground-based instruments enabling measurements in the TeV to PeV domain. While a clear prevalence of diffuse emission is observed in the GeV sky, energy-dependent cosmic-ray transport suggests a reversal of this hierarchy at higher energies. Measurements, however, are at strife regarding this question. While imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) see a source-dominated Galactic plane, air-shower particle detectors (ASPDs) report a dominance of diffuse emission. Reconciling these claims …
2HWC J1928+177 is a Galactic TeV gamma-ray source detected by the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory up to ~ 56 TeV. The HAWC source, later confirmed by H.E.S.S., still remains unidentified as a dark accelerator since there is no apparent supernova remnant or pulsar wind nebula detected in the lower energy bands. The radio pulsar PSR J1928+1746, coinciding with the HAWC source position, has no X-ray counterpart. Our SED modeling shows that inverse Compton scattering in the putative pulsar wind nebula can account for the TeV emission only if the unseen nebula is extended beyond r …
HESS J1825-137 is a pulsar wind nebula (PWN) whose TeV emission extends across ~1 deg. Its large asymmetric shape indicates that its progenitor supernova interacted with a molecular cloud located in the north of the PWN as detected by previous CO Galactic survey (e.g Lemiere, Terrier & Djannati-Ataï 2006). Here we provide a detailed picture of the ISM towards the region north of HESS J1825-137, with the analysis of the dense molecular gas from our 7mm and 12mm Mopra survey and the more diffuse molecular gas from the Nanten CO(1-0) and GRS $^{13}$CO(1-0) surveys. Our focus is the possible asso…
The Galactic TeV $γ$-ray source HESS$\,$J1804$-$216 is currently an unidentified source. In an attempt to unveil its origin, we present here the most detailed study of interstellar gas using data from the Mopra Southern Galactic Plane CO Survey, 7 and 12$\,$mm wavelength Mopra surveys and Southern Galactic Plane Survey of HI. Several components of atomic and molecular gas are found to overlap HESS$\,$J1804$-$216 at various velocities along the line of sight. The CS(1-0) emission clumps confirm the presence of dense gas. Both correlation and anti-correlation between the gas and TeV $γ$-ray emis…
Cosmic ray interactions that produce high-energy neutrinos also inevitably generate high-energy gamma rays, which finally contribute to the diffuse high-energy gamma-ray background after they escape the sources. It was recently found that, the high flux of neutrinos at $\sim30$ TeV detected by IceCube lead to a cumulative gamma-ray flux exceeding the Fermi isotropic gamma-ray background at 10-100 GeV, implying that the neutrinos are produced by hidden sources of cosmic rays, where GeV-TeV gamma-rays are not transparent. Here we suggest that relativistic jets in tidal disruption events (TDEs) o…
LHAASO detected 12 gamma-ray sources above 100 TeV which are the possible origins of Galactic cosmic-rays. We summarize the neutrino measurements by IceCube and ANTARES in the vicinity of LHAASO sources to constrain the contribution of hadronic gamma-rays in these sources. We find that the current observations constrain that the hadronic gamma-rays contribute no more than ~60% of the gamma-rays from Crab Nebula. Gamma-rays from two LHAASO sources, LHAASO J1825-1326 and LHAASO J1907+0626, are dominated by leptonic components up to ~200 TeV, under the hypotheses in the analysis by IceCube. The u…
