In this paper, we establish moderate deviations for the chemical distance in Bernoulli percolation. The chemical distance between two points is the length of the shortest open path between these two points. Thus, we study the size of random fluctuations around the mean value, and also the asymptotic behavior of this mean value. The estimates we obtain improve our knowledge of the convergence to the asymptotic shape. Our proofs rely on concentration inequalities proved by Boucheron, Lugosi and Massart, and also on the approximation theory of subadditive functions initiated by Alexander.

Genealogical distance under selection

We study the genealogical distance of two randomly chosen individuals in a population that evolves according to a two type Moran model with mutation and selection. We prove that this distance is stochastically smaller than the corresponding distance in the neutral model, when the population size is large. Moreover, we prove convergence of the genealogical distance under selection to the distance in the neutral case, when the system is in equilibrium and the selection parameter tends to infinity.

A lower bound for the chemical distance in sparse long-range percolation models

We consider long-range percolation in dimension $d\geq 1$, where distinct sites $x$ and $y$ are connected with probability $p_{x,y}\in[0,1]$. Assuming that $p_{x,y}$ is translation invariant and that $p_{x,y}=\|x-y\|^{-s+o(1)}$ with $s>2d$, we show that the graph distance is at least linear with the Euclidean distance.

How does geographical distance translate into genetic distance?

Geographic structure can affect patterns of genetic differentiation and speciation rates. In this article, we investigate the dynamics of genetic distances in a geographically structured metapopulation. We model the metapopulation as a weighted directed graph, with d vertices corresponding to d subpopulations that evolve according to an individual based model. Accurate estimation of evolutionary distances between taxa is important for many phylogenetic reconstruction methods. In the case of bacteria, distances can be estimated using a range of different evolutionary models, from single nucleotide polymorphisms to large-scale genome rearrangements.
