We advocate charmed-hadron inclusive hadroproduction as a laboratory to probe intrinsic charm (IC) inside the colliding hadrons. Working at next-to-leading order in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme endowed with non-perturbative fragmentation functions recently extracted from a global fit to e^+e^- annihilation data from KEKB, CESR, and LEP1, we first assess the sensitivity of Tevatron data of D^0, D^+, and D^{*+} inclusive production to the IC parameterizations provided by Pumplin et al. We then argue that similar data from pp collisions at RHIC would have the potential to discriminate between different IC models provided they reach out to sufficiently large values of transverse momentum.
In this paper we review the hadroproduction mechanisms of double-charm baryons for the different experimental environments and reinterpret the SELEX and LHCb results.
Recent results on the hadroproduction of charm and beauty are discussed in the context of the current theoretical and experimental status. The areas covered include production of open charm and beauty particles and charm and beauty quarkonia. Experimental results from both fixed target and colliding beam experiments are presented and compared to theoretical predictions. Predictions based on QCD perturbation theory are generally successful in explaining the shapes of differential cross sections but underestimate the scale of the cross section by factors of 2-3. An exception is production of the…
In the framework of Quark-Gluon-String Model (QGSM) we calculate the inclusive spectra of meson and baryons with open charm in hadron-hadron collisions, obtained by SELEX and BEATRICE collaborations, taking into account the decays of corresponding S-wave resonances.
Prompt neutrino fluxes are basic backgrounds in the search of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin, performed by means of full-size neutrino telescopes located at Earth, under ice or under water. Predictions for these fluxes are provided on the basis of up-to-date theoretical results for charm hadroproduction in perturbative QCD, together with a comprehensive discussion of the various sources of theoretical uncertainty affecting their computation, and a quantitative estimate of each uncertainty contribution.
The hadroproduction of charmed mesons is discussed within the framework of the modified Quark-Gluon String model (QGSM) taking into account the decays of corresponding $S$--wave resonances like $D^*$. It is shown that the estimate of the $c\bar{c}$--pair contribution to the quark sea of colliding hadrons strongly depends on the parametrization of the function of the leading light quark fragmentation into charmed mesons. A description of the existing experimental data on inclusive spectra and asymmetries of leading and nonleading $D$ - and $D^*$ - meson production in $ πp$ -, $p p$ - and $Σp$ -…

We have studied the effects of nonlinear scale evolution of the parton distribution functions to charm production in $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 5.5, 8.8 and 14 TeV. We find that the differential charm cross section can be enhanced up to a factor of 4-5 at low $p_T$. The enhancement is quite sensitive to the charm quark mass and the renormalization/factorization scales.
We describe calculations of $c \bar c$ production to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (NNLL) near threshold in $pp$ and $π^- p$ interactions. We study the relevance of these calculations for existing $c \bar c$ total cross section data by examining their sensitivity to partonic threshold kinematics, their convergence properties and scale dependence.
We discuss the double spin asymmetries in charmonium hadroproduction with nonzero transverse momenta at fixed target energies, $\sqrt{s}\simeq40$ GeV, within the framework of the factorization approach. It is shown that the color octet contribution is dominant in the asymmetries. The size of the asymmetries and the projected statistical errors in a future option of HERA with longitudinally polarized protons scattering off a polarized target (HERA-$\vec N$) should allow to distinguish between different parametrizations for the polarized gluon distribution in the proton.
Leading charm production in reaction $π^- N \rightarrow DX$ is discussed.Three experiments at Fermilab and CERN have measured a rather large enhancement in production rate of leading $D^-$-mesons over nonleading $D^+$.A good description of these results is obtained in Quark Gluon String Model (QGSM) if the idea of 'intrinsic charm' is involved. The weight of the $c\bar{c}$ pairs in the quark sea of colliding hadrons is estimated from the experimental data. The comparison with other theoretical models is also carried out.
We discuss the double spin asymmetries in P-wave charmonium hadroproduction with non-zero transverse momenta at fixed target energies, $\sqrt{s}\simeq40$ GeV, within the framework of the NRQCD factorization approach. The size of the asymmetries and the projected statistical errors in a future option of HERA with longitudinally polarized protons scattering off a polarized target (HERA-$\vec N$) are calculated. Measurements of the $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ decays into dilepton plus photon should allow to distinguish between different parametrizations for the polarized gluon distribution in the proto…
The fragmentation functions D_{a -> H}(x,mu^2) of a heavy hadron H, with mass m_H, satisfy the phase-space constraint D_{a - > H}(x,mu^2)=0 for x < m_H^2/mu^2, which is violated by the naive mu^2 evolution equations. Using appropriately generalized mu^2 evolution equations, we reconsider the inclusive hadroproduction of prompt J/psi mesons with high transverse momenta in the framework of the factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, and determine the resulting shifts in the values of the leading colour-octet matrix elements, which are fitted to data from the Fermilab T…
The asymmetry of $D^-$ and $D^+$ meson production in $π^-N$ scattering observed by the E791 experiment is a typical phenomenon known as the leading particle effect in charm hadroproducton. We show that the phenomenon can be explained by the effect of light quark fragmentation into charmed hadrons (LQF). Meanwhile, the size of the LQF effect is estimated from data of the E791 experiment. A comparison is made with the estimate of the LQF effect from prompt like-sign dimuon rate in neutrino experiments. The influence of the LQF effect on the measurement of nucleon strange distribution asymmetry f…
We calculate threshold soft-gluon corrections to total cross sections and transverse momentum distributions for bottom and charm quark production in fixed-target experiments, considering both pp and pi- p interactions. We investigate the quality of the near threshold soft-gluon approximation at next-to-leading order (NLO) and calculate next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections through next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNNLL) accuracy, including some virtual terms. We find that the NNLO threshold corrections reduce the factorization and renormalization scale dependence of the …
We compare the numerical predictions for heavy quark production in high energy hadron collisions of the conventional QCD parton model and the $k_T$-factorization approach (semihard theory). The total production cross sections, one-particle rapidity and $p_T$ distributions as well as two-particle correlations are considered. The difference in the predictions of the two approaches is not very large, while the shapes of the distributions are slightly different.
With the recent LHCb data on $η_c$ production and based on heavy quark spin symmetry, we obtain the long-distance matrix elements for both $η_c$ and $J/ψ$ productions, among which, the color-singlet one for $η_c$ is obtained directly by the fit of experiment for the first time. Using our long-distance matrix elements, we can provide good description of the $η_c$ and $J/ψ$ hadroproduction measurements. Our predictions on $J/ψ$ polarization are in good agreement with the LHCb data and pass through the two sets of CDF measurements in medium $p_t$ region. Considering all the possible uncertainties…
We compare the theoretical status and the numerical predictions of two approaches for heavy quark production in the high energy hadron collisions, namely the conventional LO parton model with collinear approximation and $k_T$-factorization approach. The main assumptions used in the calculations are discussed. To extract the differences coming from the matrix elements we use very simple gluon structure function and fixed coupling. It is shown that the $k_T$-factorization approach calculated formally in LO and with Sudakov form factor accounts for many contributions related usually to NLO (and e…
Data on $W + D$-meson and $W + c$-jet hadroproduction have recently started to be included in at least some of the parton distribution function fits, mainly because of their potential to constrain the strange quark content of the proton. In this contribution we present predictions for $W + D$-meson and $W + c$-jet production with NLO QCD accuracy matched to parton shower. We show how including the latter effects, as well as hadronization, beam remnant and multiple parton interaction effects present in Shower Monte Carlo codes, is fundamental to provide consistent comparisons with the current e…
In the present paper, we present detailed discussions on the hadronic production of $Ξ_{cc}$ at a fixed target experiment at the LHC (After@LHC). The charm quarks in hadron could be either extrinsic or intrinsic. By using the BHPS model as the intrinsic charm distribution function in proton, we observe that even if by setting the proportion of finding the intrinsic charm in a proton as $A_{\rm in}=1\%$, total cross sections for the $g+c$ and $c+c$ production mechanisms shall be enhanced by nearly two times. Thus the number of $Ξ_{cc}$ events to be generated at the After@LHC can be greatly enha…
We examine carefully bottomonia hadroproduction in proton colliders, especially focusing on the LHC, as a way of probing the gluon density in protons. To this end we develop some previous work, getting quantitative predictions and concluding that our proposal can be useful to perform consistency checks of the parameterization sets of different parton distribution functions.
Determining how much spin is carried by gluon in a polarized proton is a fundamental problem which cannot be resolved by completely inclusive deep inelastic measurements. Hadroproduction of heavy flavors is very sensitive to the gluon content of hadrons. We show that $χ_2 (3555)$ production in polarized proton-proton collisions is a good candidate reaction to address this challenging question.
In this paper we show that the intrinsic heavy-quark QCD mechanism for the hadroproduction of heavy hadrons at large $x_F$ can resolve the apparent conflict between measurements of double-charm baryons by the SELEX fixed-target experiment and the LHCb experiment at the LHC collider. We show that both experiments are compatible, and that both results can be correct. The observed spectroscopy of double-charm hadrons is in agreement with the predictions of supersymmetric light front holographic QCD.
Asymmetries in the hadroproduction of charm particles directly probe power corrections to the QCD factorization theorems. In this paper, the heavy-quark recombination mechanism, a power correction that explains charm meson asymmetries, is extended to charm baryons. In this mechanism, a light quark participates in the hard scattering that creates a charm quark and they hadronize together into a charm baryon. This provides a natural and economical explanation for the Λ_c^+/Λ_c^- asymmetries measured in πN and p N collisions.
Double $J/ψ$ production has been observed by the NA3 collaboration in $πN$ and $p N$ collisions with a cross section of the order of 20-30 pb. The $ψψ$ pairs measured in $π^- $ nucleus interactions at 150 and 280 GeV$/c$ are observed to carry an anomalously large fraction of the projectile momentum in the laboratory frame, $x_{ψψ} \geq 0.6$ at 150 GeV$/c$ and $\geq 0.4$ at 280 GeV$/c$. We postulate that these forward $ψψ$ pairs are created by the materialization of Fock states in the projectile containing two pairs of intrinsic $c \overline c$ quarks. We calculate the overlap of the charmonium…
The transverse momentum distribution of single vector boson production at hadron colliders provides useful ways of testing the Standard Model and searching new physics beyond the Standard Model. We study large $p_{_T}$ hadroproduction of $Z$-boson as a probe of gluon distributions inside proton. We investigate how to get initial gluon-involving contributions, or how to subtract quark-quark (or -antiquark) contributions from total cross section. We also investigated the simultaneous measurement of the rapidity and the transverse momentum of the produced $Z$ boson, to obtain momentum fractions o…
The character of asymmetry between the spectra of Lambda_c and antiLambda_c in the E781 experiment (FNAL) is discussed on the basis of the Quark Gluon String Model(QGSM). As it was shown in the description of the asymmetry between the spectra of leading and nonleading charmed mesons measured in Sigma^--A interactions at p_L= 340 GeV/c in the WA89 experiment in previous studies, the asymmetries between D^- and D^+ meson spectra and between D_s^- and D^+_s meson spectra can be fitted by QGSM curves with the same parameter of string fragmentation, a_1=10, as well as the asymmetry between the D-me…
Recent experiments at Fermilab and CERN have observed a strong asymmetry between the hadroproduction cross sections of leading $D$ mesons, containing projectile valence quarks, and nonleading charmed mesons, without projectile valence quarks. The observed correlations of the $π^{\pm} N \to D^\pm X$ cross section with the projectile charge violates the usual assumption that heavy quark jet fragmentation factorizes. We examine the asymmetry between leading and nonleading charm production as a function of $x_f$ and $p_T^2$ assuming a two-component model combining leading-twist fusion subprocesses…
We investigate the integrated cross section for forward $\jpsi$ production in proton-proton and pion-proton collisions at centre of mass energies upto 60 GeV. We find that colour-octet contributions to the cross section are crucially important, and their inclusion produces a very good description of the data. Since the values of non-perturbative matrix elements are fixed by other experiments, these predictions are parameter-free.
We update predictions for lepton fluxes from the hadroproduction of charm quarks in the scattering of primary cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere. The calculation of charm-pair hadroproduction applies the latest results from perturbative QCD through next-to-next-to-leading order and modern parton distributions, together with estimates on various sources of uncertainties. Our predictions for the lepton fluxes turn out to be compatible, within the uncertainty band, with recent results in the literature. However, by taking into account contributions neglected in previous works, our total unce…
We analyze contributions to the heavy vector meson production with large transverse momentum in proton--proton and diffractive photon--proton scattering driven by an exchange of two Balitsky--Fadin--Kuraev--Lipatov Pomerons in the squared amplitudes. The Pomerons couple to a single parton and form a Pomeron loop closed by the vector meson impact factors. For the photon--proton case the diffractive cut of the Pomeron loop contributes, and for the inclusive hadroproduction one finds the loop with two cut Pomerons. We compute both of these Pomeron loop contributions and study in detail their prop…
The prediction of single spin asymmetry (SSA) in double $\rm J/ψ$ production in proton-proton collision is given out within the framework of non-relativistic QCD, using the recently obtained best fit parameters for the gluon Sivers function extracted from PHENIX data in $\rm p+p^\uparrow\toπ^0+X$. The color singlet state $\rm ^3 S_1^{(1)}$ and color octet state $\rm ^3 S_1^{(8)}$ are considered to the SSA contribution in the double $\rm J/ψ$ hadroproduction. Our result shows that a sizable asymmetry can be estimated as functions of different kinematic variables.
We review the theoretical status of squark and gluino hadroproduction and provide numerical predictions for all squark and gluino pair-production processes at the Tevatron and at the LHC, with a particular emphasis on proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV. Our predictions include next-to-leading order supersymmetric QCD corrections and the resummation of soft gluon emission at next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. We discuss the impact of the higher-order corrections on total cross sections, and provide an estimate of the theoretical uncertainty due to scale variation and the parton distribution f…
Experimental data on cosmic ray cascades with enlarged attenuation lengths (Tien-Shan effect) are presented and analyzed in terms of charm hadroproduction. The very first estimates of charm hadroproduction cross sections from experimental data at high energies are confirmed and compared with recent accelerator results.
Experimental data on analyzing power for inclusive meson and baryon production in hadron-proton(polarized) collisions have been analyzed. It is found that the existing data can be described by a simple function of collision energy, transverse momentum (Pt) and a new scaling variable Xa = E/Ebeam. At beam energies above 40 GeV and Pt above 1 GeV/c the analyzing power is described by a function of Xa and Pt only (AN = F(Pt)G(Xa)) for both polarized proton fragmentation and central regions of proton-hadron collision. Comparison of data from Fermilab and new IHEP data measured using 40 GeV/c polar…
A calculation of the next-to-leading order cross section for the inclusive hadroproduction of charm quarks including heavy quark mass effects in the hard scattering cross sections is presented. It is described how the massive hard scattering cross sections are constructed from the corresponding cross sections in a fixed order calculation where collinear pieces associated with the heavy quark are not yet subtracted. By adjusting suitable subtraction terms a massive theory with MSbar subtraction is established which approaches the massless theory with increasing transverse momentum. These result…
We compute NRQCD long-distance matrix elements that appear in the inclusive production cross sections of $P$-wave heavy quarkonia in the framework of potential NRQCD. The formalism developed in this work applies to strongly coupled charmonia and bottomonia. This makes possible the determination of color-octet NRQCD long-distance matrix elements without relying on measured cross section data, which has not been possible so far. We obtain results for inclusive production cross sections of $χ_{cJ}$ and $χ_{bJ}$ at the LHC, which are in good agreement with measurements.
We discuss the hadroproduction of charmed mesons in the framework of the constituent cascade model taking into account the valence quark annihilation. It is shown that the small valence quark annihilation process dominates the leading particle production at large Feynman x and explains the recent experimental data on the asymmetry between D^0 and D^0 bar at 350 GeV/c.
I study the direct hadroproduction of Jψassociated with a charm-quark pair at leading order in alpha_S and v in NRQCD. This process provides an interesting signature that could be studied at the Tevatron. I consider both colour-singlet and colour-octet transitions. I compare our results to the fragmentation approximation and discuss the associated experimental signatures.
In the hadroproduction of charm (or heavy flavours in general) in the context of string fragmentation, the pull of a beam remnant at the other end of a string may give a charm hadron more energy than the perturbatively produced one. The collapse of a low-mass string to a single hadron is the extreme case in this direction, and gives rise to asymmetries between leading and non-leading charm hadrons. We study these phenomena within the Lund string fragmentation model and improve the modelling in part by a consideration of hadroproduction data. Applications include heavy quark production in any c…
In the hadroproduction of charm in the context of string fragmentation, the pull of a beam remnant at the other end of a string may give a charm hadron more energy than the perturbatively produced charm quark. The collapse of a low-mass string to a single hadron is the extreme case in this direction, and gives rise to asymmetries between charm and anticharm hadron spectra. We study these phenomena, and develop models that describe the characteristics not only of the charm hadrons but also of the associated event.
We present the results of a calculation of the intrinsic charm quark contribution to $J/ψ$ plus open charm associated production at large transverse momentum in hadron collisions at high energies. It is shown that the value of the cross section for such process and its energy dependence are significantly determined by the choice of charm quark distribution function. We find that intrinsic charm contribution to inclusive $J/ψ$ hadroproduction is about 1\% of the total contribution of all mechanisms.
We consider the prompt photon production at high energy hadron colliders in the framework of k_T-factorization approach. The unintegrated quark and gluon distributions in a proton are determined using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription. The conservative error analisys is performed. We investigate both inclusive prompt photon and prompt photon and associated muon production rates. In Standard Model such events come mainly due to Compton scattering process where the final heavy (charm or bottom) quark produces a muon. The theoretical results are compared with recent experimental data taken by…
The phenomenological approach in the framework of Quark-Gluon String Model (QGSM) has been applied to the description of transverse momentum spectra for the baryon production at colliders. The analysis of data on hyperon transverse momentum distributions,dN/dp_t, demonstrates a difference in the dynamics of multiparticle production in proton-proton vs. antiproton-proton collisions in the region of low p_t . The most important contribution in antip-p reaction goes from fragmentation of antidiquark-diquark side of pomeron diagram. The complete study of the energy dependence of average transverse…
We study open charm production at high energies in the framework of the quasi-multi-Regge-kinematics approach applying the quark-Reggeization hypothesis implemented with Reggeon-Reggeon-particle and Reggeon-particle-particle effective vertices. Adopting the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin unintegrated quark and gluon distribution functions of the proton and photon, we thus nicely describe the proton structure function F_{2,c} measured at DESY HERA as well as the transverse-momentum distributions of D mesons created by photoproduction at HERA and by hadroproduction at the Fermilab Tevatron.
We present predictions for the prompt-neutrino flux arising from the decay of charmed mesons and baryons produced by the interactions of high-energy cosmic rays in the Earth's atmosphere, making use of a QCD approach on the basis of the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme for the description of charm hadroproduction at next-to-leading order, complemented by a consistent set of fragmentation functions. This same scheme is used for the description of charm hadroproduction at both the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider. We compare the theoretical predictions to those already obtained b…
We present the results of our analysis on charmonia ($J/ψ$ and $ψ'$) hadroproduction taking into account higher-order QCD effects induced by initial-state radiation in a Monte Carlo framework, with the colour-octet mechanism implemented in the event generation. We find that those colour-octet matrix elements extracted so far from Fermilab Tevatron data for both $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ production have to be lowered significantly. We finally make predictions for charmonia production at the LHC, presenting a code for a fast simulation with PYTHIA based on the colour-octet model.
We propose that the process of triple prompt $J/ψ$ hadroproduction is a very clean hard probe of multiple-parton scatterings at high-energy hadron colliders, especially the least known triple-parton scattering. A first complete study is carried out by considering single-, double-, and triple-parton scatterings coherently. Our calculation shows that it is a golden channel to probe double- and triple-parton scatterings, as the single-parton scattering is strongly suppressed. The predictions of the (differential) cross sections in proton-proton collisions at the LHC and the future higher-energy h…
We present a phenomenological analysis of asymmetric bottom- and charm-quark production within the LHCb acceptance relevant for $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13 \, {\rm TeV}$. Predictions are provided for both anti-$k_t$ bottom- and charm-jet pairs, which are kept differentially with respect to the invariant mass of the jet pair. It is quantified how data in this region can provide sensitivity to the couplings of the $Z$ boson to heavy quarks, and we investigate what precision is needed to compete with LEP. We also discuss how asymmetry and rate measurements can provide constraints on a parti…
We propose a novel mechanism for the production of the Higgs boson in inclusive hadronic collisions, which utilizes the presence of heavy quarks in the proton wave function. In these inclusive reactions the Higgs boson acquires the momenta of both the heavy quark and antiquark and thus carries 80% or more of the projectile's momentum. We predict that the cross section ${d σ/d x_F}(p \bar p \to H X)$ for the inclusive production of the Standard Model Higgs coming from intrinsic bottom Fock states is of order 150 fb at LHC energies, peaking in the region of $x_F \sim 0.9$. Our estimates indicate…
I discuss the impact of the the coherent parton radiation on semi-inclusive production of hadrons in deep inelastic scattering at lepton-proton colliders. Such radiation can be consistently described in the $b$-space resummation formalism, which was originally developed to improve theoretical description of production of hadrons at $e^+e^-$ colliders and electroweak vector bosons at hadron-hadron colliders. I present the detailed derivation of the resummed cross section and the energy flow at the next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD. The theoretical results are compared to the experimenta…
Experiments on charm hadroproduction have shown a substantial difference in the production of charm and anticharm hadrons. In this work we study /\_c+ and /\_c- inclusive production in p-N interactions in the framework of two component models. We show that the recombination two component model gives a qualitatively and quantitatively good description of /\_c production while the intrinsic charm model seems to be ruled out by recent experimental data from the SELEX Collaboration.
We calculate differential cross sections for exclusive double diffractive (EDD) production of open charm in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions. Sizeable cross sections are found. The EDD contribution constitutes about 1 % of the total inclusive cross section for open charm production. A few differential distributions are shown and discussed. The EDD contribution falls faster both with transverse momentum of the $c$ quark/antiquark and the $c \bar c$ invariant mass than in the inclusive case.
A short review on charmed and beauty hadron production in the lepton deep inelastic scattering off proton, in proton-proton and proton-antiproton collisions at high energies is presented. It is shown that the existing theoretical and experimental information on charmed and beauty quark distributions in a proton is not satisfactory. A some procedure to study these distributions at LHC energies is suggested.
The leading particle effect in charm hadroproduction is an enhancement of the cross section for a charmed hadron D in the forward direction of the beam when the beam hadron has a valence parton in common with the D. The large D+/D- asymmetry observed by the E791 experiment is an example of this phenomenon. We show that the heavy-quark recombination mechanism provides an economical explanation for this effect. In particular, the D+/D- asymmetry can be fit reasonably well using a single parameter whose value is consistent with a recent determination from charm photoproduction.
Contributions to the quark flavor and spin observables from the intrinsic charm in the proton are discussed in the SU(4) quark meson fluctuation model. Our results suggest that the probability of finding the intrinsic charm in the proton is less than 1%. The intrinsic charm helicity is small and negative, $Δc \simeq -(0.003\sim 0.015)$. The fraction of the total quark helicity carried by the intrinsic charm is less than 2%, and $c_\up/c_\dw$=35/67.
Using the experimental data on pentaquarks with a hidden charm, new upper limits on the intrinsic charm in the proton are obtained, possible shapes of heavy quark distributions inside the proton are discussed.
We study the inclusive hadroproduction of D^0, D^+, D^star+, and D_s^+ mesons at leading order in the parton Reggeization approach endowed with universal fragmentation functions fitted to $e^+e^-$ annihilation data from CERN LEP1. We have described $D$-meson transverse momentum distributions measured in the central region of rapidity by the CDF Collaboration at Tevatron (|y|<1) and ALICE Collaboration at LHC (|y|<0.5) within uncertainties and without free parameters, using Kimber-Martin-Ryskin unintegrated gluon distribution function in a proton. The forward D-meson production (|y|>2.0) measur…
