We argue that the fermion masses and mixings are organized in a specific pattern. The approximately equal hierarchies between successive generations, the sizes of the mixing angles, the heaviness of just the top quark, and the approximate down-lepton equality can all be accommodated by many flavor models but can appear ad hoc. We present a simple, predictive mechanism to explain these patterns. All generations are treated democratically and the flavor symmetries are broken collectively by only two allowed couplings in flavor-space, a vector and matrix, with arbitrary O(1) entries. Repeated use of these flavor symmetry breaking spurions radiatively generates the Yukawa couplings with a natural hierarchy. We demonstrate this idea with two models in a split supersymmetric grand unified framework, with minimal additional particle content at the unification scale. Although flavor is generated at the GUT scale, there are several potentially testable predictions. In our minimal model the usual prediction of exact b-tau unification is replaced by the SU(5) breaking relation m_tau / m_b = 3 / 2, in better agreement with observations. Other SU(5) breaking effects in the fermion masses can easily arise directly from the flavor model itself. The symmetry breaking that triggers the generation of flavor necessarily gives rise to an axion, solving the strong CP problem. These theories contain long-lived particles whose decays could give striking signatures at the LHC and may solve the primordial Lithium problems. These models also give novel proton decay signatures which can be probed by the next generation of experiments. Measurement of the various proton decay channels directly probes the flavor symmetry breaking couplings. In this scenario the Higgs mass is predicted to lie in a range near 150 GeV.
We study a symmetry breaking of residual flavor symmetries realized at fixed points of the moduli space. In the supersymmetric modular invariant theories, a small departure of the modulus from fixed points is required to realize fermion mass hierarchies and sizable CP-breaking effects. We investigate whether one can dynamically fix the moduli values in the vicinity of the fixed points in the context of Type IIB string theory. It is found that the string landscape prefers $|δτ| \simeq 10^{-5}$ for the deviation of the complex structure modulus from all fixed points and the CP-breaking vacuum is…
Flavor symmetry has been widely studied for figuring out the masses and mixing angles of standard-model fermions. In this paper we present a framework for handling flavor symmetry breaking where the symmetry breaking is triggered by boundary conditions of scalar fields in extra-dimensional space. The alignment of scalar expectation values is achieved without referring to any details of scalar potential and its minimization procedure. As applications to non-abelian discrete flavor symmetries, illustrative lepton mass models are constructed where the S3 and A4 flavor symmetries are broken down t…
A promising approach to the Standard Model flavor puzzle is based on the idea that the $SU(3)^3$ quark-flavor symmetry is spontaneously broken by vacuum expectation values of `Yukawa fields' which minimize the symmetry invariant scalar potential at configurations corresponding to the observed quark masses and mixing angles. We show that this approach provides a simple and elegant explanation for CP conservation in strong interactions.
We study the soft supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking terms due to the modulus F-term in the modular flavor models of leptons. It is found that the soft SUSY breaking terms are constrained by the modular forms, and specific patterns are derived. Those phenomenological implications are discussed in such as the lepton flavor violation, $μ\rightarrow e + γ$ decay. In order to examine numerically, two modular flavor $A_4$ models are taken. The SUSY breaking scale is significantly constrained by inputting the observed upper bound of the $μ\rightarrow e + γ$ decay. The SUSY mass scale is larger than aroun…
In certain class of flux compactification, moduli mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking preserves flavor and CP at leading order in the perturbative expansion controlled by the vacuum expectation value of the messenger modulus. Nevertheless there still might be dangerous flavor or CP violation induced by higher order Kähler potential. We examine the constraints on such SUSY breaking scheme imposed by low energy flavor and/or CP violating observables. It is found that all phenomenological constraints can be satisfied even for generic form of higher order Kähler potential and sparticle spectra …
Recently, Dymarsky, Kuperstein and Sonnenschein constructed an embedding of flavor D7- and anti-D7-branes in the Klebanov-Strassler geometry that breaks the supersymmetry of the background, yet is stable. In this article, we study in detail the spectrum of vector mesons in this new model of flavor chiral symmetry breaking and commence an analytical analysis of the scalar mesons in this setup.
We determine the vacuum structure and phases of N=1 theories obtained via a mass μfor the adjoint chiral superfield in N=2, SO(n_c) SQCD. For large number of flavors these theories have two groups of vacua. The first exhibits dynamical breaking of flavor symmetry \USp(2n_f) \to U(n_f) and arises as a relevant deformation of a non-trivial superconformal theory. These are in the confined phase. The second group, in an IR-free phase with unbroken flavor symmetry, is produced from a Coulomb branch singularity with Seiberg's dual gauge symmetry. In the large-μregime both groups of vacua are well-de…
Simple experimental tests are proposed which can clarify the origin for the anomalously high $η'$ appearance in charmless strange final states in $B$ decays and can investigate the the nature of SU(3) symmetry-breaking in weak heavy flavor decays.
It is shown that in $2+1$ dimensions, a constant magnetic field is a strong catalyst of dynamical flavor symmetry breaking, leading to generating a fermion dynamical mass even at the weakest attractive interaction between fermions. The effect is illustrated in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a magnetic field. The low-energy effective action in this model is derived and the thermodynamic properties of the model are established. The relevance of this effect for planar condensed matter systems is pointed out.
In $\XQM$, a quark can emit Goldstone bosons. The flavor symmetry breaking in the Goldstone boson emission process is used to intepret the nucleon flavor-spin structure. In this paper, we study the inner structure of constituent quarks implied in $\XQM$ caused by the Goldstone boson emission process in nucleon. From a simplified model Hamiltonian derived from $\XQM$, the intrinsic wave functions of constituent quarks are determined. Then the obtained transition probabilities of the emission of Goldstone boson from a quark can give a reasonable interpretation to the flavor symmetry breaking in …
We study the supersymmetric model with the A4 lepton flavor symmetry, in particular soft supersymmetry breaking terms, which are predicted from the A4 lepton flavor symmetry. We evaluate soft slepton masses and A-terms within the framework of supergravity theory. Constraints due to experiments of flavor changing neutral current processes are examined.
Flavor structure of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters is studied in a certain type of effective supergravity theory derived from moduli/dilaton dominated supersymmetry breaking. Some interesting sum rules for soft scalar masses are presented. They constrain their flavor structure and predict some interesting patterns appeared in soft scalar masses in the non-universal case. We also study the alignment phenomena in the flavor space of soft breaking parameters due to Yukawa couplings and discuss their phenomenological consequences.
We explore calculable models with low-energy supersymmetry where the flavor hierarchy is generated by quark and lepton compositeness, and where the composites emerge from the same sector that dynamically breaks supersymmetry. The observed pattern of Standard Model fermion masses and mixings is obtained by identifying the various generations with composites of different dimension in the ultraviolet. These "single-sector" supersymmetry breaking models give rise to various spectra of soft masses which are, in many cases, quite distinct from what is commonly found in models of gauge or gravity med…
We show that supersymmetry and R-symmetry can be dynamically broken in a long-lived metastable vacuum of SQCD with massive and massless flavors. The vacuum results from a competition of a (leading) two-loop effect and small "Planck" suppressed higher-dimension operators. This mechanism provides a particularly simple realization of dynamical SUSY and R-symmetry breaking, and as such it is a good starting point for building phenomenologically viable models of gauge mediation. We take a preliminary step in this direction by constructing a complete model of minimal gauge mediation. Here we find th…
We systematically analyze the correlations between the various leptonic and hadronic flavor violating processes arising in SUSY Grand Unified Theories. Using the GUT-symmetric relations between the soft SUSY breaking parameters, we assess the impact of hadronic and leptonic flavor observables on the SUSY sources of flavor violation.
We study the supersymmetric model with $D_4 \times Z_2$ lepton flavor symmetry. We evaluate soft supersymmetry breaking terms, i.e. soft slepton masses and A-terms, which are predicted in the $D_4$ flavor model. We consider constraints due to experiments of flavor changing neutral current processes.
We present a class of supersymmetric models in which flavor symmetries are broken dynamically, by a set of composite flavon fields. The strong dynamics that is responsible for confinement in the flavor sector also drives flavor symmetry breaking vacuum expectation values, as a consequence of a quantum-deformed moduli space. Yukawa couplings result as a power series in the ratio of the confinement to Planck scale, and the fermion mass hierarchy depends on the differing number of preons in different flavor symmetry-breaking operators. We present viable non-Abelian and Abelian flavor models that …
It is shown that in $2+1$ dimensions, a constant magnetic field is a strong catalyst of dynamical flavor symmetry breaking, leading to generating a fermion dynamical mass even at the weakest attractive interaction between fermions. The essence of this effect is that in a magnetic field, in $2+1$ dimensions, the dynamics of fermion pairing is essentially one-dimensional. The effect is illustrated in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in a magnetic field. The low-energy effective action in this model is derived and the thermodynamic properties of the model are considered. The relevance of this effect …
We suggest a solution to the μproblem of gauge mediated supersymmtery breaking models based on flavor symmetries. In this scenario the μterm arises through the vacuum expectation value of a singlet scalar field which is suppressed by a flavor symmetry factor relative to the scale of dynamical SUSY breaking. The same flavor symmetry also ensures that the soft SUSY breaking parameter Bμis not much larger than μ^2, a necessary condition for the stability of electroweak symmetry breaking. Explicit examples where Bμ~ μ^2 and Bμ<< μ^2 are presented. The latter case provides a natural solution to the…
The interplay of mesonic fluctuations with an axial $U(1)_A$-symmetry breaking and resulting effects on the location of a possibly existing critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram are investigated in a framework of the functional renormalization group within a $N_f = 2 + 1$ flavor quark-meson model truncation. The axial $U(1)_A$-symmetry breaking is imposed by a mesonic Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft determinant. The quark mass sensitivity of the chiral phase transition with and without the $U(1)_A$-symmetry breaking is studied.
We discuss dynamics of N=2 supersymmetric SU(n_c) gauge theories with n_f quark hypermultiplets. Upon N=1 perturbation of introducing a finite mass for the adjoint chiral multiplet, we show that the flavor U(n_f) symmetry is dynamically broken to U(r) \times U(n_f-r), where r\leq [n_f/2] is an integer. This flavor symmetry breaking occurs due to the condensates of magnetic degrees of freedom which acquire flavor quantum numbers due to the quark zero modes. We briefly comment on the USp(2n_c) gauge theories. This talk is based on works with Giuseppe Carlino and Ken Konishi, hep-th/0001036 and h…
It has recently been shown that strong interactions underlying electroweak symmetry breaking will induce four-fermion amplitudes proportional to m_t^2, which in turn will influence a variety of flavor changing processes. We argue that the size of these effects are likely to be far below the current experimental bounds.
We study the effects of flavor symmetry breaking on holographic dense matter and compact stars in the D4/D6 model. To this end, two light flavors and one intermediate mass flavor are considered. For two light quarks, we investigate how the strong isospin violation affects the properties of holographic dense matter and compact stars. We observe that quark-antiquark condensates are flavor dependent and show interesting behavior near the transition from dense matter with only one flavor to matter with two flavors. An intermediate mass quark is introduced to investigate the role of the third flavo…
5D orbifold has two attractive features: quasi-localized matter fields can naturally reproduce hierarchical Yukawa coupling, while supersymmetry breaking is inherently built in by the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism. We examine the consequence of this quasi-localization and the Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking in low energy flavor violating processes, under the assumption that physics below the compactification scale is described by the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and find $BR(μ\to e,γ)$ and $ε_K$ impose stringent constraint on flavor structure of the Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetr…
We present an effective flavor model for the radiative generation of fermion masses and mixings based on a SU(5)xU(2) symmetry. We assume that the original source of flavor breaking resides in the supersymmetry breaking sector. Flavor violation is transmitted radiatively to the fermion Yukawa couplings at low energy through finite supersymmetric threshold corrections. This model can fit the fermion mass ratios and CKM matrix elements, explain the non-observation of proton decay, and overcome present constraints on flavor changing processes through an approximate radiative alignment between the…
We investigate the gravitational form factors of the baryon octet within the framework of the SU(3) chiral quark-soliton model, considering the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking, and the corresponding energy-momentum tensor distributions. We examine the effects of flavor SU(3) symmetry breaking to the mass, angular momentum, pressure, and shear force distributions of the baryon octet. We first find that a heavier baryon is energetically more compact than a lighter one. For the spin distributions of the baryon octet, they are properly normalized to their spins and are decomposed into th…
In this paper we show how some flavor symmetries may be derived from the heterotic string, when compactified on a 6D orbifold. In the body of the paper we focus on the $D_4$ family symmetry, recently obtained in $Z_3 \times Z_2$ orbifold constructions. We show how this flavor symmetry constrains fermion masses, as well as the soft SUSY breaking mass terms. Flavor symmetry breaking can generate the hierarchy of fermion masses and at the same time the flavor symmetry suppresses large flavor changing neutral current processes.
The democracy of quark flavors is a well-motivated flavor symmetry, but it must be properly broken in order to explain the observed quark mass spectrum and flavor mixing pattern. We reconstruct the texture of flavor democracy breaking and evaluate its strength in a novel way, by assuming a parallelism between the Q=+2/3 and Q=-1/3 quark sectors and using a nontrivial parametrization of the flavor mixing matrix. Some phenomenological implications of such democratic quark mass matrices, including their variations in the hierarchy basis and their evolution from the electroweak scale to a superhig…
The magnetic moments and transition magnetic moments of the ground state baryons are analyzed in an expansion in 1/N_c, SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking and isospin symmetry breaking. There is clear evidence in the experimental data for the hierarchy of magnetic moments of the combined expansion in 1/N_c and flavor breaking. SU(3) breaking in the magnetic moments is expected to be enhanced relative to that of other hadronic observables, and significant SU(3) breaking is found.
We review how a classification into representations of color and flavor can be used to understand the possible patterns of symmetry breaking for color superconductivity in dense quark matter. In particular, we show how for three flavors, color-flavor locking is precisely analogous to the usual pattern of chiral symmetry breaking in the QCD vacuum.
We study the massive SU(3) Skyrmion model to investigate the flavor symmetry breaking (FSB) effects on the static properties of the strange baryons in the framework of the rigid rotator quantization scheme combined with the improved Dirac quantization one. Both the chiral symmetry breaking pion mass and FSB kinetic terms are shown to improve $c$ the ratio of the strange-light to light-light interaction strengths and $\bar{c}$ that of the strange-strange to light-light.
We discuss the possibility of obtaining a non-abelian discrete flavor symmetry from an underlying continuous, possibly gauged, flavor symmetry SU(2) or SU(3) through spontaneous symmetry breaking. We consider all possible cases, where the continuous symmetry is broken by small representations. "Small" representations are these which couple at leading order to the Standard Model fermions transforming as two- or three-dimensional representations of the flavor group. We find that, given this limited representation content, the only non-abelian discrete group which can arise as a residual symmetry…
Gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking is known to greatly suppress flavor changing neutral current effects. However, we show that gauge mediation in the context of leptogenesis implies potentially large lepton flavor violating signals. If the heavy right-handed neutrinos that participate in leptogenesis are lighter than the messenger scale of gauge mediation, they will induce flavor off-diagonal masses to the sleptons which in turn can induce large effects in mu to e gamma, tau to mu gamma, and mu-e conversion in nuclei. We demonstrate this result and compute numerically the lepton-flavor viol…
We analyze the flavor structure of the trilinear couplings in the different theoretical models of SUSY breaking. We generically obtain A_{ij}= A^L_i + A^R_j in all the models examined. In fact, this is the rigorous form when SUSY breaking effects appear through the Kahler metric of chiral fields or through wave-function renormalization. Indeed, the low-energy phenomenological requirements from the absence of charge and color breaking minima and the measurements in flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) observables strongly favor this restricted form of the trilinear matrices. As a straightforw…
A supersymmetric see-saw model obeying the flavor symmetry L_mu - L_tau, which naturally predicts quasi-degenerate neutrinos, is investigated. Breaking of the symmetry is introduced in the Dirac mass matrix because it is the most economic choice in the sense that all interesting low and high energy phenomenology is made possible: we analyze the predictions for the low energy neutrino observables, for leptogenesis and for lepton flavor violating decays such as mu \to e gamma, where the SPS benchmark points for the SUSY parameters are used. It is outlined how these decays in connection with the …
We discuss the violation of quark-flavor symmetry at high temperatures, induced from nonperturbative thermal loop corrections and axial anomaly, based on a three-flavor linear-sigma model including an axial-anomaly induced-flavor breaking term. We employ a nonperturbative analysis following the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis formalism, and show that the model undergoes a chiral crossover with a pseudo-critical temperature, consistently with lattice observations. We find following features regarding the flavor breaking eminent around and above the pseudo-critical temperature: i) up-and down-quark co…
We propose a left-right symmetric model to simultaneously give natural inflation and flavor mixing from a Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking at the Planck scale. Our model can be embedded in SO(10) grand unification theories.
We present a unified picture of flavor and electroweak symmetry breaking at the TeV scale. Flavor and Higgs bosons arise as pseudo-Goldstone modes in a nonlinear sigma model. Explicit collective symmetry breaking yields stable vacuum expectation values and masses protected at one loop by the little-Higgs mechanism. The coupling to the fermions through a Yukawa lagrangian with a U(1) global flavor symmetry generates well-definite mass textures that correctly reproduce the mass hierarchies and mixings of quarks and leptons. The model is more constrained than usual little- Higgs models because of…
We present a unified picture of flavor and electroweak symmetry breaking based on a nonlinear sigma model spontaneously broken at the TeV scale. Flavor and Higgs bosons arise as pseudo-Goldstone modes. Explicit collective symmetry breaking yields stable vacuum expectation values and masses protected at one loop by the little-Higgs mechanism. The coupling to the fermions generates well-definite mass textures--according to a U(1) global flavor symmetry--that correctly reproduce the mass hierarchies and mixings of quarks and leptons. The model is more constrained than usual little-Higgs models be…
If the hierarchy of quark masses comes out of simultaneous dynamical chiral and flavor symmetry breakings, it is inevitably accompanied by the flavor mixing. Therefore, these phenomena, independent in the standard model and in many of its generalizations, become related since they appear out of the same dynamics. The features of that high energy dynamics may be investigated via accordance with observed mass hierarchy and mixing.
We present a complete, viable model of gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking that is safe from all flavor constraints. The central new idea is to employ a supersymmetry breaking sector without singlets, but with D-terms comparable to F-terms, causing supersymmetry breaking to be dominantly communicated through U(1)_R-symmetric operators. We construct a visible sector that is an extension of the MSSM where an \emph{accidental} U(1)_R symmetry emerges naturally. Gauginos acquire Dirac masses from gravity-mediated D-terms, and tiny Majorana masses from anomaly-mediated contributions. Contributi…
We find the phase and flavor symmetry breaking pattern of each N=1 supersymmetric vacuum of SU(n_c) and USp(2 n_c) gauge theories, constructed from the exactly solvable N=2 theories by perturbing them with small adjoint and generic bare hypermultiplet (quark) masses. In SU(n_c) theories with n_f \leq n_c the vacua are labelled by an integer r, in which the flavor U(n_f) symmetry is dynamically broken to U(r) \times U(n_f-r) in the limit of vanishing bare hyperquark masses. In the r=1 vacua the dynamical symmetry breaking is caused by the condensation of magnetic monopoles in the n_f representa…
Employing an extended three flavor version of the NJL model we discuss in detail the phase diagram of quark matter. The presence of quark as well as of diquark condensates gives raise to a rich structure of the phase diagram. We study in detail the chiral phase transition and the color superconductivity as well as color flavor locking as a function of the temperature and chemical potentials of the system.
We present an analysis of the three-flavor holographic model of QCD associated to a $D4/D8$ brane configuration, with symmetry breaking induced by a worldsheet instanton associated to a closed loop connecting $D4-D8-D6-\overline{D8}$. We calculate the electromagnetic and axial couplings of all octet and decuplet baryons, as well as several negative parity excitations, with and without symmetry breaking effects, and demonstrate qualitative and quantitative agreement with many available experimental measurements, with marked improvement over the analogous two-flavor models.
We discuss the magnetic moments of the baryons allowing for flavor symmetry breaking in the quark magnetic moments. We show that there is a correlation between isospin symmetry breaking and data for the nucleon spin structure obtained from deep inelastic scattering. For small values of the isospin symmetry breaking, of the order of $5\%$, the magnetic moments and weak axial-vector form factors alone indicate a value of the spin polarization $ΔΣ\leq 0.20$. Larger values of the spin polarization are compatible only with large isospin symmetry breaking. We also calculate weak axial-vector form fa…
While flavor symmetries are useful for studying hadronic B decays, symmetry relations for amplitudes and decay rates are usually violated by first order symmetry breaking corrections. We point out two cases in which first order symmetry breaking is suppressed by a small ratio of amplitudes: (1) An isospin sum rule for four $B\to Kπ$ decays, where isospin breaking is shown to be negligible. (2) An SU(3) sum rule for pairs of $B\to Kπ$ and $B\to Kη_8$, generalized to pairs of $B\to Kπ, B\to Kη$ and $B\to Kη'$.
In light of the observation of a relatively large $θ^{}_{13}$, one has to consider breaking the $μ$-$τ$ symmetry properly which would otherwise result in a vanishing $θ^{}_{13}$ (as well as $θ^{}_{23} = π/4$). Therefore, we investigate various symmetry-breaking patterns and accordingly identify those that are phenomenologically viable. Furthermore, the symmetry-breaking effects arising from some specific physics (e.g., the renormalization group equation running effect) are discussed as well.
Spin-flavor symmetry breaking in the levels of excited Baryons are studied to leading order in the 1/$N_c$ expansion. This breaking occurs at zeroth order. For non-strange Baryons with a single quark excited, it is shown that to first order of perturbation theory the breaking is given by one 1-body operator (spin-orbit), and three 2-body operators, all involving the orbital angular momentum of the excited quark. Higher-body operators can be reduced to that set of operators. As illustration, p-wave Baryons are briefly discussed.
We investigate flavored gauge mediation models in which the Higgs and messenger doublets are embedded in multiplets of the discrete non-Abelian symmetry S3. In these theories, the S3 symmetry correlates the flavor structure of the quark and lepton Yukawa couplings with the structure of the messenger Yukawa couplings that contribute to the soft supersymmetry breaking mass parameters. We provide a systematic exploration of possible scenarios within this framework that can accommodate hierarchical quark and charged lepton masses, and examine the resulting phenomenological implications in each cas…
We suggest that breaking of SU(3) flavor symmetry mainly resides in the baryon wave--functions while the charge operators have no (or only small) explicit symmetry breaking components. We utilize the collective coordinate approach to chiral soliton models to support this picture. In particular we compute the $g_A/g_V$ ratios for hyperon beta--decay and the strangeness contribution to the nucleon axial current matrix elements and analyze their variation with increasing flavor symmetry breaking.
We discuss the flavor structure of soft supersymmetry breaking parameters in 5-dimensional orbifold field theories in which N=1 supersymmetry is broken by the Scherk-Schwarz boundary condition and hierarchical 4-dimensional Yukawa couplings are obtained by quasi-localizing the matter fields in extra dimension. In such theories, the resulting soft scalar masses and trilinear scalar couplings at the compactification scale are highly flavor-dependent, but appropriately suppressed in correlation with Yukawa couplings. Those flavor violations can give interesting phenomenological consequences at lo…
The gauge model with $SO(3)_{F}$ flavor symmetry and three Higgs triplets is studied. We show how the intriguing nearly degenerate neutrino mass and bi-maximal mixing scenario comes out naturally after spontaneous breaking of the symmetry. The hierarchy between the neutrino mass-squared differences, which is needed for reconciling both solar and atmospheric neutrino data, is naturally resulted from an approximate permutation symmetry. The model can also lead to interesting phenomena on lepton-flavor violations via the $SO(3)_{F}$ gauge interactions.
We analyze neutrino masses and Lepton Flavor Violation (LFV) in charged leptons with a minimal ansatz about the breaking of the U(3)^5 flavor symmetry, consistent with the U(2)^3 breaking pattern of quark Yukawa couplings, in the context of supersymmetry. Neutrino masses are expected to be almost degenerate, close to present bounds from cosmology and $0νββ$ experiments. We also predict $s_{13} \approx s_{23} |V_{td}|/|V_{ts}| \approx 0.16$, in perfect agreement with the recent DayaBay result. For slepton masses below 1 TeV, barring accidental cancellations, we expect $\cB(μ\to e γ) > 10^{-13}$…
Supersymmetric flavor models for the radiative generation of fermion masses offer an alternative way to solve the SUSY-CP problem. We assume that the supersymmetric theory is flavor and CP conserving. CP violating phases are associated to the vacuum expectation values of flavor violating susy-breaking fields. As a consequence, phases appear at tree level only in the soft supersymmetry breaking matrices. Using a U(2) flavor model as an example we show that it is possible to generate radiatively the first and second generation of quark masses and mixings as well as the CKM CP phase. The one-loop…
We should be taking advantage of recent gains in our nonperturbative understanding of supersymmetric gauge theories to find the ``standard'' model of of dynamical supersymmetry breaking, and possibly of flavor as well. As an illustration of the possibilities for understanding the flavor hierarchy, I describe a realistic, renormalizable, supersymmetric model with a compositeness scale of $\sim 1-3$ TeV for the top quark, the left handed bottom quark, and the up-type Higgs. The top-Higgs Yukawa coupling is a dynamically generated strong interaction effect, and is naturally large, while the other…
We examine the soft supersymmetry breaking parameters induced by the Scherk-Schwarz (SS) boundary condition in 5-dimensional orbifold field theory in which the quark and lepton zero modes are quasi-localized at the orbifold fixed points to generate the hierarchical Yukawa couplings. In such theories, the radion corresponds to a flavon to generate the flavor hierarchy and at the same time plays the role of the messenger of supersymmetry breaking. As a consequence, the resulting soft scalar masses and trilinear $A$-parameters of matter zero modes at the compactification scale are highly flavor-d…
A ${\cal G}_{\cal F}=SU(3)_{Q}\times SU(3)_{u}\times SU(3)_{d}$ invariant scalar potential breaking spontaneously the quark flavor symmetry can explain the standard model flavor puzzle. The approximate alignment in flavor space of the vacuum expectation values of the up and down ``Yukawa fields'' is explained as a dynamical effect, and the observed quark mixing angles, the weak CP violating phase, and hierarchical quark masses can be reproduced without introducing hierarchical parameters.
We have studied the contribution of higher order corrections of the flavor symmetry breaking in the $A_4$ seesaw model with the supersymmetry. Taking account of possible higher dimensional mass operators, we predict the deviation from the tri-bimaximal lepton mixing for both normal hierarchy and inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses. We have found that the value of $\sin^2 2θ_{23}$ is larger than 0.96 and the upper bound of $\sin^2θ_{13}$ is 0.01. We have also examined the flavor changing neutral current of leptons from the soft SUSY breaking in slepton masses and A-terms within the framework …
We discuss a GUT realization of the supersymmetric triplet seesaw mechanism(recently proposed by us in hep-ph/0604083 and further analyzed in hep-ph/0607298) where the exchange of the heavy triplet states generates both neutrino masses and soft SUSY breaking terms.
The SU(3) symmetric chiral quark model, which describes interactions between quarks, gluons and the Goldstone bosons, explains reasonably well many aspects of the flavor and spin structure of the proton, except for the values of $f_3/f_8$ and $Δ_3/Δ_8$. Introducing the SU(3)-breaking effect suggested by the mass difference between the strange and nonstrange quarks, we find that this discrepancy can be removed and better overall agreement obtained.
