We present Keck II NIRSPEC rest-frame optical spectra for three recently discovered lensed galaxies: the Cosmic Horseshoe (z = 2.38), the Clone (z = 2.00), and SDSS J090122.37+181432.3 (z = 2.26). The boost in signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) from gravitational lensing provides an unusually detailed view of the physical conditions in these objects. A full complement of high S/N rest-frame optical emission lines is measured, spanning from rest-frame 3600 to 6800AA, including robust detections of fainter lines such as H-gamma, [SII]6717,6732, and in one instance [NeII]3869. SDSS J090122.37+181432.3 shows evidence for AGN activity, and therefore we focus our analysis on star-forming regions in the Cosmic Horseshoe and the Clone. For these two objects, we estimate a wide range of physical properties, including star-formation rate (SFR), metallicity, dynamical mass, and dust extinction. In all respects, the lensed objects appear fairly typical of UV-selected star-forming galaxies at z~2. The Clone occupies a position on the emission-line diagnostic diagram of [OIII]/H-beta vs. [NII]/H-alpha that is offset from the locations of z~0 galaxies. Our new NIRSPEC measurements may provide quantitative insights into why high-redshift objects display such properties. From the [SII] line ratio, high electron densities (~1000 cm^(-3)) are inferred compared to local galaxies, and [OIII]/[OII] line ratios indicate higher ionization parameters compared to the local population. Building on previous similar results at z~2, these measurements provide further evidence (at high S/N) that star-forming regions are significantly different in high-redshift galaxies, compared to their local counterparts (abridged).
We present new HST/WFC3 imaging data of RCSGA 032727-132609, a bright lensed galaxy at z=1.7 that is magnified and stretched by the lensing cluster RCS2 032727-132623. Using this new high-resolution imaging, we modify our previous lens model (which was based on ground-based data) to fully understand the lensing geometry, and use it to reconstruct the lensed galaxy in the source plane. This giant arc represents a unique opportunity to peer into 100-pc scale structures in a high-redshift galaxy. This new source reconstruction will be crucial for a future analysis of the spatially-resolved rest-U…
We analyze the optical, UV, and X-ray microlensing variability of the lensed quasar SDSS J0924+0219 using six epochs of Chandra data in two energy bands (spanning 0.4-8.0 keV, or 1-20 keV in the quasar rest frame), 10 epochs of F275W (rest-frame 1089A) Hubble Space Telescope data, and high-cadence R-band (rest-frame 2770A) monitoring spanning eleven years. Our joint analysis provides robust constraints on the extent of the X-ray continuum emission region and the projected area of the accretion disk. The best-fit half-light radius of the soft X-ray continuum emission region is between 5x10^13 a…
We report on a short XMM-Newton observation of the gravitationally-lensed, luminous infrared galaxy IRAS F10214+4724 at z=2.3. A faint X-ray source is detected at 4 sigma. The observed 0.5-2 keV (1.7-6.6 keV in the rest-frame) flux is 1.3e-15 erg/s/cm2 and the spectral slope in the rest-frame 1-10 keV band is Gamma~2. These results agree with those obtained from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, given the large uncertainties in both measurements. While possible evidence for excess emission above 5 keV is seen, we suspect this excess might be either spurious or not related to the infrared galaxy.
We report the results of a study of the rest-frame UV spectrum of the Cosmic Eye, a luminous Lyman break galaxy at z=3.07331 gravitationally lensed by a factor of 25. The spectrum, recorded with the ESI spectrograph on the Keck II telescope, is rich in absorption features from the gas and massive stars in this galaxy. The interstellar absorption lines are resolved into two components of approximately equal strength and each spanning several hundred km/s in velocity. One component has a net blueshift of -70 km/s relative to the stars and H II regions and presumably arises in a galaxy-scale outf…
We present low-resolution, rest-frame ~ 5 - 12 micron Spitzer/IRS spectra of two lensed z ~ 2 UV-bright star-forming galaxies, SDSS J120602.09+514229.5 and SDSS J090122.37+181432.3. Using the magnification boost from lensing, we are able to study the physical properties of these objects in greater detail than is possible for unlensed systems. In both targets, we detect strong PAH emission at 6.2, 7.7, and 11.3 microns, indicating the presence of vigorous star formation. For J1206, we find a steeply rising continuum and significant [S IV] emission, suggesting that a moderately hard radiation fi…
We report rest-frame optical Keck/NIRSPEC spectroscopy of the bright lensed galaxy RCSGA 032727-132609 at z=1.7037. From precise measurements of the nebular lines, we infer a number of physical properties: redshift, extinction, star formation rate, ionization parameter, electron density, electron temperature, oxygen abundance, and N/O, Ne/O, and Ar/O abundance ratios. The limit on [O III]~4363 A tightly constrains the oxygen abundance via the "direct" or electron temperature method, for the first time in an average-metallicity galaxy at z~2. We compare this result to several standard "bright-l…
We use gravitational microlensing to determine the size of the X-ray and optical emission regions of the quadruple lens system Q 2237+0305. The optical half-light radius, log(R_{1/2,V}/cm)=16.41\pm0.18 (at lambda_{rest}=2018 Å), is significantly larger than the observed soft, log(R_{1/2,soft}/cm)=15.76^{+0.41}_{-0.34} (1.1-3.5 keV in the rest frame), and hard, log(R_{1/2,hard}/cm)=15.46^{+0.34}_{-0.29} (3.5-21.5 keV in the rest frame), band X-ray emission. There is a weak evidence that the hard component is more compact than the soft, with log(R_{1/2,soft}/R_{1/2,hard}) \sim 0.30^{+0.53}_{-0.4…
Star formation occurs on physical scales corresponding to individual star forming regions, typically of order ~100 parsecs in size, but current observational facilities cannot resolve these scales within field galaxies beyond the local universe. However, the magnification from strong gravitational lensing allows us to measure the properties of these discrete star forming regions within galaxies in the distant universe. New results from multi-wavelength spectroscopic studies of a sample of extremely bright, highly magnified lensed galaxies are revealing the complexity of star formation on sub-g…
We present the first detailed analysis of the rest-frame UV spectrum of the gravitationally lensed Lyman break galaxy (LBG), the `8 o'clock arc'. The spectrum of the 8 o'clock arc is rich in stellar and interstellar medium (ISM) features, and presents several similarities to the well-known MS1512-cB58 LBG. The stellar photospheric absorption lines allowed us to constrain the systemic redshift, z_sys = 2.7350+/-0.0003, of the galaxy, and derive its stellar metallicity, Z=0.82 Z_sol. With a total stellar mass of ~4.2x10^{11} M_sol, the 8 o'clock arc agrees with the mass-metallicity relation foun…
We present a comprehensive analysis of the rest-frame UV to near-IR spectral energy distributions and rest-frame optical spectra of four of the brightest gravitationally lensed galaxies in the literature: RCSGA 032727-132609 at z=1.70, MS1512-cB58 at z=2.73, SGAS J152745.1+065219 at z=2.76 and SGAS J122651.3+215220 at z=2.92. This includes new Spitzer imaging for RCSGA0327 as well as new spectra, near-IR imaging and Spitzer imaging for SGAS1527 and SGAS1226. Lensing magnifications of 3-4 magnitudes allow a detailed study of the stellar populations and physical conditions. We compare star forma…
We present the rest-frame optical spectrum of a strongly lensed galaxy at redshift z =1.7 behind the cluster Abell 1689. We detect the temperature sensitive auroral line [O III] 4363, which allows the first direct metallicity measurement for galaxies at z > 1. Our high signal-to-noise spectrum indicates that the target is an extremely low metallicity star-forming galaxy. We estimate an intrinsic absolute B band magnitude of M_{B}=-18.3 \pm 0.1$, with a stellar mass of 4.4$\pm1.2\times10^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$. This galaxy extends the luminosity-metallicity relation of star-forming galaxies at z > 2 b…
We present VLT/X-shooter spectra of 13 galaxies in the redshift range 1< z < 6, which are strongly lensed by massive galaxy clusters. Spectroscopic redshifts are measured for nine galaxies, while three sources have redshifts determined from continuum breaks in their spectra. The stellar masses of the galaxies span four orders of magnitude between 10^7 and 10^11 M_sun and have luminosities at 1500 A rest-frame between 0.004 and 9 L^* after correcting for the magnification. This allows us to probe a variety of galaxy types from young, low-mass starburst galaxies to massive evolved galaxies. The …
We report near simultaneous imaging using LMIRCam on the LBTI of the quadruply imaged lensed quasar HS 0810+2554 at wavelengths of 2.16, 3.7 and $4.78~μ$m with a Full Width Half Max (FWHM) spatial resolution of $0^{\prime\prime}\!\!.13$, $0^{\prime\prime}\!\!.12$ and $0^{\prime\prime}\!\!.15$ respectively, comparable to HST optical imaging. In the $\rm{z} = 1.5$ rest frame of the quasar, the observed wavelengths correspond to 0.86, 1.48, and $1.91~μ$m respectively. The two brightest images in the quad, A and B, are clearly resolved from each other with a separation of $0.187^{\prime\prime}$. T…
We present rest-frame optical images and spectra of the gravitationally lensed, star-forming galaxy J0900+2234 (z=2.03). The observations were performed with the newly commissioned LUCIFER1 near-infrared instrument mounted on the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). We fit lens models to the rest-frame optical images and find the galaxy has an intrinsic effective radius of 7.4 kpc with a lens magnification factor of about 5 for the A and B components. We also discovered a new arc belonging to another lensed high-z source galaxy, which makes this lens system a potential double Einstein ring system.…
We present results from a search for gravitationally lensed galaxies present in the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Wide Field Camera-3 (WFC3) images of the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). We present one bona fide lens system in UDS and two compact lens candidates in the GOODS-S field. The lensing system in UDS involves two background galaxies, one at z=1.847 lensed to an arc and a counterimage, and the second at a photometric redshift of z=2.32^{+0.10}_{-0.06} lensed to a double image. We reconstruct the lensed sources in the source plane and find in each of t…
We present the analysis of new NIR, intermediate-resolution spectra of the gravitationally lensed galaxy "the 8 o'clock arc" at z_sys = 2.7350 obtained with VLT/X-shooter. These rest-frame optical data, combined with HST and Spitzer images, provide very valuable information, which nicely complement our previous detailed rest-frame UV spectral analysis. From high-resolution HST images, we reconstruct the morphology of the arc in the source plane, and identify that the source is formed of two majors parts, the main galaxy component and a smaller blob separated by 1.2 kpc in projected distance. T…
We present four new seasons of optical monitoring data and six epochs of X-ray photometry for the doubly-imaged lensed quasar Q J0158-4325. The high-amplitude, short-period microlensing variability for which this system is known has historically precluded a time delay measurement by conventional methods. We attempt to circumvent this limitation by application of a Monte Carlo microlensing analysis technique, but we are only able to prove that the delay must have the expected sign (image A leads image B). Despite our failure to robustly measure the time delay, we successfully model the microlen…
The dominant uncertainty in the current measurement of the Hubble constant ($H_0$) with strong gravitational lensing time delays is attributed to uncertainties in the mass profiles of the main deflector galaxies. Strongly lensed supernovae (glSNe) can provide, in addition to measurable time delays, lensing magnification constraints when knowledge about the unlensed apparent brightness of the explosion is imposed. We present a hierarchical Bayesian framework to combine a dataset of SNe that are not strongly lensed and a dataset of strongly lensed SNe with measured time delays. We jointly constr…
Motivated by the preponderance of so-called "heavy black holes" in the binary black hole (BBH) gravitational wave (GW) detections to date, and the role that gravitational lensing continues to play in discovering new galaxy populations, we explore the possibility that the GWs are strongly-lensed by massive galaxy clusters. For example, if one of the GW sources were actually located at $z=1$, then the rest-frame mass of the associated BHs would be reduced by a factor $\sim2$. Based on the known populations of BBH GW sources and strong-lensing clusters, we estimate a conservative lower limit on t…
We report the detection of CO(1-0) line emission in the bright, lensed star-forming galaxies SPT-S 233227-5358.5 (z=2.73) and SPT-S 053816-5030.8 (z=2.78), using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Both galaxies were discovered in a large-area millimeter survey with the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and found to be gravitationally lensed by intervening structures. The measured CO intensities imply galaxies with molecular gas masses of (3.2 \pm 0.5)x10^10 (mu/15)^{-1}(X_CO/0.8) M_sun and (1.7 \pm 0.3)x10^10 (mu/20)^{-1}(X_CO/0.8) M_sun, and gas depletion timescales of 4.9x10^7 (X_CO/0.8)…
The Grism Lens-Amplified Survey from Space (GLASS) is a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Large Program, which will obtain 140 orbits of grism spectroscopy of the core and infall regions of 10 galaxy clusters, selected to be among the very best cosmic telescopes. Extensive HST imaging is available from many sources including the CLASH and Frontier Fields programs. We introduce the survey by analyzing spectra of faint multiply-imaged galaxies and $z\gtrsim6$ galaxy candidates obtained from the first seven orbits out of fourteen targeting the core of the Frontier Fields cluster MACS0717.5+3745. Using…
We present rest-frame optical spectra for a sample of 9 low-mass star-forming galaxies in the redshift range 1.5 < z < 3 which are gravitationally lensed by foreground clusters. We used Triplespec, an echelle spectrograph at the Palomar 200-inch telescope that is very effective for this purpose as it samples the entire near-infrared spectrum simultaneously. By measuring the flux of nebular emission lines we derive gas phase metallicities and star formation rates, and by fitting the optical to infrared spectral energy distributions we obtain stellar masses. Taking advantage of the high magnific…

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are highly dispersed and probably extragalactic radio flashes with millisecond-duration. Recently, the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (using the CHIME/FRB instrument) has reported detections of 13 FRBs during a pre-commissioning phase. It is more exciting that one of the 13 FRBs is a second source of repeaters which suggests that CHIME/FRB and other wide-field sensitive radio telescopes will find a substantial population of repeating FRBs. We have proposed strongly lensed repeating FRBs as a precision cosmological probe, e.g. constraining the Hubble con…
Luminous extragalactic water masers are known to be associated with AGN and have provided accurate estimates for the mass of the central supermassive black hole and the size and structure of the accretion disk in nearby galaxies. To find water masers at much higher redshifts, we have begun a survey of known gravitationally lensed quasars and star-forming galaxies. In this paper, we present a search for 22 GHz (rest frame) water masers toward five dusty, gravitationally lensed quasars and star-forming galaxies at redshifts 2.3--2.9 with the Effelsberg telescope and the EVLA. Our observations do…
Strong gravitational lensing magnifies the flux from distant galaxies, allowing us to detect emission lines that would otherwise fall below the detection threshold for medium-resolution spectroscopy. Here we present the detection of temperature-sensitive oxygen emission lines from three galaxies at 2<z<3.5, which enables us to directly determine the oxygen abundances and thereby double the number of galaxies at z>2 for which this has been possible. The three galaxies have ~10% solar oxygen abundances in agreement with strong emission line diagnostics. Carbon and nitrogen ratios relative to oxy…
We present multi-wavelength imaging and near-IR spectroscopy for ten gravitationally lensed galaxies at 0.9<z<2.5 selected from a new, large sample of strong lens systems in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7. We derive stellar masses from the rest-frame UV to near-IR spectral energy distributions, star formation rates (SFR) from the dust-corrected Ha flux, and metallicities from the [N II]/Ha flux ratio. We combine the lensed galaxies with a sample of sixty star-forming galaxies from the literature in the same redshift range for which measurements of [N II]/Ha have been published. Due to…
In a systematic search over 11 cluster fields from Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) we identify ten passively evolving massive galaxies at redshift z~2.We derive the stellar properties of these galaxies using HST WFC3/ACS multiband data, together with Spitzer IRAC observations. We also deduce the optical rest-frame effective radius of these high redshift objects. The derived stellar masses and measured effective radii have been corrected by the lensing magnification factors, which are estimated by simply adopting the spherical NFW model for the foreground cluster lens. …
We present physical properties of two submillimeter selected gravitationally lensed sources, identified in the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey. These submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) have flux densities > 100 mJy at 500 um, but are not visible in existing optical imaging. We fit light profiles to each component of the lensing systems in Spitzer IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 um data and successfully disentangle the foreground lens from the background source in each case, providing important constraints on the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the background SMG at rest-frame optical-ne…

Strong lensing in galaxy clusters probes properties of dense cores of dark matter halos in mass, studies the distant universe at flux levels and spatial resolutions otherwise unavailable, and constrains cosmological models independently. The next-generation large scale sky imaging surveys are expected to discover thousands of cluster-scale strong lenses, which would lead to unprecedented opportunities for applying cluster-scale strong lenses to solve astrophysical and cosmological problems. However, the large dataset challenges astronomers to identify and extract strong lensing signals, partic…
We present observations of two strongly lensed $z\sim5$ Lyman-$α$ Emitting (LAE) galaxies that were discovered in the Sloan Giant Arcs Survey (SGAS). We identify the two sources as SGAS J091541+382655, at $z=5.200$, and SGAS J134331+415455 at $z=4.994$. We measure their AB magnitudes at $(i,z)=(23.34\pm0.09,23.29\pm0.13$) mags and $(i,z)=(23.78\pm0.18,24.24^{+0.18}_{-0.16}$) mags, and the rest-frame equivalent widths of the Lyman-$α$ emission at $25.3\pm4.1$Å~and $135.6\pm20.3$Å~for SGAS J091541+382655 and SGAS J134331+415455, respectively. Each source is strongly lensed by a massive galaxy cl…
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging and spectroscopy of the gravitational lens SL2SJ02176-0513, a cusp arc at z=1.847. The UV continuum of the lensed galaxy is very blue, which is seemingly at odds with its redder optical colors. The 3D-HST WFC3/G141 near-infrared spectrum of the lens reveals the source of this discrepancy to be extremely strong [OIII]5007 and H-beta emission lines with rest-frame equivalent widths of 2000 +/- 100 and 520 +/- 40 Angstroms, respectively. The source has a stellar mass ~10^8 Msun, sSFR \sim 100/Gyr, and detection of [OIII]4363 yields a metallicity of …
Time delays between the multiple images of strongly lensed Type Ia supernovae (gl\sneia) have the potential to deliver precise cosmological constraints, but the effects of microlensing on the measurement have not been studied in detail. Here we quantify the effect of microlensing on the gl\snia\ yield of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and the effect of microlensing on the precision and accuracy of time delays that can be extracted from LSST gl\sneia. Microlensing has a negligible effect on the LSST gl\snia\ yield, but it can be increased by a factor of $\sim$2 to 930 systems using …
We present a study using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array of 12CO J=1-0 emission in three strongly lensed submillimetre-selected galaxies (SMMJ16359, SMMJ14009 and SMMJ02399) at z=2.5-2.9. These galaxies span L(IR) = 10^11 - 10^13 Lsun, offering an opportunity to compare the interstellar medium of LIRGs and ULIRGs at high redshift. We estimate molecular gas masses in the range (2-40) x 10^9 Msun using a method that assumes canonical underlying brightness temperature ratios for star-forming and non-star-forming gas phases and a maximal star-formation efficiency. A more simplistic method usin…

This is the first version (v1) of the Gravitational LENses and DArk MAtter (GLENDAMA) database accessible at http://grupos.unican.es/glendama/database The new database contains more than 6000 ready-to-use (processed) astronomical frames corresponding to 15 objects that fall into three classes: (1) lensed QSO (8 objects), (2) binary QSO (3 objects), and (3) accretion-dominated radio-loud QSO (4 objects). Data are also divided into two categories: freely available and available upon request. The second category includes observations related to our yet unpublished analyses. Although this v1 of th…
We present the HOLISMOKES programme on strong gravitational lensing of supernovae as a probe of supernova (SN) physics and cosmology. We investigate the effects of microlensing on early-phase SN Ia spectra using four different SN explosion models, and find that within 10 rest-frame days after SN explosion, distortions of SN Ia spectra due to microlensing are typically negligible ($<$1% distortion within the 1$σ$ spread, and $\lesssim$10% distortion within the 2$σ$ spread). This shows great prospects of using lensed SNe Ia to obtain intrinsic early-phase SN spectra for deciphering SN Ia progeni…
We report the detection of the Paschen-alpha emission line in the z=2.515 galaxy SMM J163554.2+661225 using Spitzer spectroscopy. SMM J163554.2+661225 is a sub-millimeter-selected infrared (IR)-luminous galaxy maintaining a high star-formation rate (SFR), with no evidence of an AGN from optical or infrared spectroscopy, nor X-ray emission. This galaxy is lensed gravitationally by the cluster Abell 2218, making it accessible to Spitzer spectroscopy. Correcting for nebular extinction derived from the H-alpha and Pa-alpha lines, the dust-corrected luminosity is L(Pa-alpha) = (2.57+/-0.43) x 10^43…
We estimate the incidence of multiply-imaged AGNs among the optical counterparts of X-ray selected point-like sources in the XXL field. We also derive the expected statistical properties of this sample, such as the redshift distribution of the lensed sources and of the deflectors that lead to the formation of multiple images, modelling the deflectors using both spherical (SIS) and ellipsoidal (SIE) singular isothermal mass distributions. We further assume that the XXL survey sample has the same overall properties as the smaller XMM-COSMOS sample restricted to the same flux limits and taking in…

It has been shown that time delay of strong gravitational lensing is not only an effective cosmological probe to constrain the Hubble constant, the matter density and the curvature of the universe but also useful for breaking the degeneracy of the dark energy equation of state and thus provide complementarity with other popular probes, such as type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, and cosmic microwave background radiation. Interestingly, compared to traditional strong lensing systems where quasars act as sources, strongly lensed gravitational waves (GWs) from compact binary coalesc…
Taking advantage of strong gravitational lensing, we have recorded the rest-frame UV spectrum of the z = 2.38115 galaxy `The Cosmic Horseshoe' (J1148+1930) at higher resolution and S/N than is currently feasible for unlensed galaxies at z = 2 -3. From the analysis of stellar spectral features, we conclude that a continuous mode of star formation with a Salpeter slope gives a good representation of the UV spectrum, ruling out significant departures from a `standard' IMF. Generally, we find good agreement between the values of metallicity deduced from stellar and nebular tracers. Interstellar ab…
We present a detailed analysis of the far-IR properties of the bright, lensed, z = 2.3, SMG, SMM J2135-0102, using new observations with Herschel, SCUBA-2 and the VLA. These data allow us to constrain the galaxy's SED and show that it has an intrinsic rest-frame 8-1000um luminosity, L(bol), of (2.3 +/- 0.2) x 10^12 L(sun) and a likely SFR of ~400 M(sun)/yr. The galaxy sits on the far-IR/radio correlation for far-IR-selected galaxies. At ~>70um, the SED can be described adequately by dust components with T(d) ~ 30 and 60K. Using SPIRE's Fourier Transform Spectrometer we report a detection of th…
Strong lensing is a sensitive probe of the small-scale density fluctuations in the Universe. We implement a novel approach to modeling strongly lensed systems using probabilistic cataloging, which is a transdimensional, hierarchical, and Bayesian framework to sample from a metamodel (union of models with different dimensionality) consistent with observed photon count maps. Probabilistic cataloging allows us to robustly characterize modeling covariances within and across lens models with different numbers of subhalos. Unlike traditional cataloging of subhalos, it does not require model subhalos…
We present a detailed analysis of the X-ray emission of HS 1700+6416, a high redshift (z=2.7348), luminous quasar, classified as a Narrow Absorption Line (NAL) quasar on the basis of its SDSS spectrum. The source has been observed 9 times by Chandra and once by XMM from 2000 to 2007. Long term variability is clearly detected, between the observations, in the 2-10 keV flux varying by a factor of three (~3-9x10^-14 erg s^-1 cm^-2) and in the amount of neutral absorption (Nh < 10^22 cm^-2 in 2000 and 2002 and Nh=4.4+-1.2x10^22 cm^-2 in 2007). Most interestingly, one broad absorption feature is cl…
