Aims: Develop and validate tools to estimate residual noise covariance in Planck frequency maps. Quantify signal error effects and compare different techniques to produce low-resolution maps.
Methods: We derive analytical estimates of covariance of the residual noise contained in low-resolution maps produced using a number of map-making approaches. We test these analytical predictions using Monte Carlo simulations and their impact on angular power spectrum estimation. We use simulations to quantify the level of signal errors incurred in different resolution downgrading schemes considered in this work.
Results: We find an excellent agreement between the optimal residual noise covariance matrices and Monte Carlo noise maps. For destriping map-makers, the extent of agreement is dictated by the knee frequency of the correlated noise component and the chosen baseline offset length. The significance of signal striping is shown to be insignificant when properly dealt with. In map resolution downgrading, we find that a carefully selected window function is required to reduce aliasing to the sub-percent level at multipoles, ell > 2Nside, where Nside is the HEALPix resolution parameter. We show that sufficient characterization of the residual noise is unavoidable if one is to draw reliable contraints on large scale anisotropy.
Conclusions: We have described how to compute the low-resolution maps, with a controlled sky signal level, and a reliable estimate of covariance of the residual noise. We have also presented a method to smooth the residual noise covariance matrices to describe the noise correlations in smoothed, bandwidth limited maps.
Abstract Covariance matrix estimation is a challenging problem in cosmology. Recent work has shown that model covariance matrices can be precise, and that at relatively large scales they can also be accurate. We introduce a data-driven method that can identify features from a mock covariance matrix that are missing from a corresponding model, then incorporate them into the model without significantly degrading the model's precision. We apply this method to a BOSS-like survey and extend a model covariance to be valid at scales relevant for measurements of Redshift Space Distortions (8-40 Mpc/h)…
We investigate correlations induced by gravitational lensing on simulated cosmic microwave background data of experiments with an incomplete sky coverage and their effect on inferences from the South Pole Telescope data. These correlations agree well with the theoretical expectations, given by the sum of super-sample and intra-sample lensing terms, with only a typically negligible $\sim$ 5% discrepancy in the amplitude of the super-sample lensing effect. Including these effects we find that lensing constraints are in $3.0σ$ or $2.1σ$ tension between the SPT polarization measurements and Planck…
We present a reproduction of the Planck 2018 angular power spectra at $\ell > 30$, and associated covariance matrices, for intensity and polarization maps at 100, 143 and 217 GHz. This uses a new, publicly available, pipeline that is part of the PSpipe package. As a test case we use the same input maps, ancillary products, and analysis choices as in the Planck 2018 analysis, and find that we can reproduce the spectra to 0.1$σ$ precision, and the covariance matrices to 10%. We show that cosmological parameters estimated from our re-derived products agree with the public Planck products to 0.1$σ…
In this paper, we study the estimation of the effective number of relativistic species from a combination of CMB and BAO data. We vary different ingredients of the analysis: the Planck high-$\ell$ likelihoods, the Boltzmann solvers, and the statistical approaches. The variation of the inferred values gives an indication of an additional systematic uncertainty, which is of the same order of magnitude as the error derived from each individual likelihood. We show that this systematic is essentially associated to the assumptions made in the high-$\ell$ likelihoods implementations, in particular fo…
This paper describes an improved mapmaking approach with respect to the one used for the Planck High Frequency Instrument 2018 Legacy release. The algorithm SRoll2 better corrects the known instrumental effects that still affected mostly the polarized large-angular-scale data by distorting the signal, and/or leaving residuals observable in null tests. The main systematic effect is the nonlinear response of the onboard analog-to-digital convertors that was cleaned in the Planck HFI Legacy release as an empirical time-varying linear detector chain response which is the first-order effect. The SR…
The Planck Collaboration made its final data release in 2018. In this paper we describe beam-deconvolution map products made from Planck LFI data using the artDeco deconvolution code to symmetrize the effective beam. The deconvolution results are auxiliary data products, available through the Planck Legacy Archive. Analysis of these deconvolved survey difference maps reveals signs of residual signal in the 30-GHz and 44-GHz frequency channels. We produce low-resolution maps and corresponding noise covariance matrices (NCVMs). The NCVMs agree reasonably well with the half-ring noise estimates e…
The search for the primordial B-modes of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) relies on the separation from the brighter foreground dust signal. In this context, the characterisation of the spectral energy distribution (SED) of thermal dust in polarization has become a critical subject of study. We present a power-spectra analysis of Planck data, which improves on previous studies by using the newly released SRoll2 maps that correct residual data systematics, and by extending the analysis to regions near the Galactic plane. Our analysis focuses on the lowest multipoles between l=4 and 32, and…
Planck's residuals of the CMB temperature power spectrum present a curious oscillatory shape that resembles an extra smoothing effect of lensing and is the source of the lensing anomaly. The smoothing effect of lensing to the CMB temperature power spectrum is, to some extent, degenerate with oscillatory modulations of the primordial power spectrum, in particular if the frequency is close to that of the acoustic peaks. We consider the possibility that the lensing anomaly reported by the latest Planck 2018 results may be hinting at an oscillatory modulation generated by a massive scalar field du…
Residual foreground contamination by thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) effect from galaxy clusters in cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps propagates into the reconstructed CMB lensing field, and thus biases the intrinsic cross-correlation between CMB lensing and large-scale structure (LSS). Through stacking analysis, we show that residual tSZ contamination causes an increment of lensing convergence in the central part of the clusters and a decrement of lensing convergence in the cluster outskirts. We quantify the impact of residual tSZ contamination on cross-correlations between the Planck 20…
In order to better analyse the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), which is dominated by emission from our Galaxy, we need tools that can detect residual foregrounds in cleaned CMB maps. Galactic foregrounds introduce statistical anisotropy and directionality to the polarization pseudo-vectors of the CMB, which can be investigated by using the D statistic of Bunn and Scott. This statistic is rapidly computable and capable of investigating a broad range of data products for directionality. We demonstrate the application of this statistic to detecting foregrounds in polarizati…
We derive a new upper bound on the tensor-to-scalar ratio parameter $r$ using the frequentist profile likelihood method. We vary all the relevant cosmological parameters of the $Λ$CDM model, as well as the nuisance parameters. Unlike the Bayesian analysis using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), our analysis is independent of the choice of priors. Using $Planck$ Public Release 4, BICEP/Keck Array 2018, $Planck$ CMB lensing, and BAO data, we find an upper limit of $r<0.037$ at 95% C.L., similar to the Bayesian MCMC result of $r<0.038$ for a flat prior on $r$ and a conditioned $Planck$ lowlEB cova…
We present forecasts on the primordial non-Gaussianity parameter $f_\text{NL}$ of feature models for the future Cosmic Microwave Background Stage-4 (CMB-S4) experiments. The Fisher matrix of the bispectrum estimator was computed using noise covariances expected for preliminary CMB-S4 specifications including ones for the Simons Observatory. We introduce a novel method that improves the computation by orthonormalising the covariance matrix. The most sensitive CMB-S4 experiment with 1' beam and 1$μK$-arcmin noise would yield a factor of 1.7-2.2 times more stringent constraints compared to Planck…

We present constraints on primordial B modes from large angular scale cosmic microwave background polarisation anisotropies measured with the Planck satellite. To remove Galactic polarised foregrounds, we use a Bayesian parametric component separation method, modelling synchrotron radiation as a power law and thermal dust emission as a modified blackbody. This method propagates uncertainties from the foreground cleaning into the noise covariance matrices of the maps. We construct two likelihoods: (i) a semi-analytical cross-spectrum-based likelihood-approximation scheme (momento) and (ii) an e…
In this work we explore the possibility of variations in the primordial scalar power spectrum around the power-law shape, as predicted by single-field slow-roll inflationary scenarios. We search for the trace of these fluctuations in a semi-blind, model-independent way on the observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) sky. In particular we use two sets of perturbation patterns, specific patterns with typical features such as oscillations, bumps and transitions, as well as perturbation modes, constructed from the eigenanalysis of the forecasted or measured covariance of perturbation …
We study the distribution functions of the CMB polarization angle $ψ$, focusing on the Planck 2018 CMB maps. We extend the model of Preece & Battye (2014) of Gaussian correlated $Q$ and $U$ Stokes parameters to allow nonzero means. When the variances of $Q$ and $U$ are equal and their covariance and means are zero, the polarization angle is uniformly distributed. Otherwise the uniform distribution will be modulated by harmonics with $2ψ$ and $4ψ$ phases. These modulations are visible in the Planck 2018 CMB maps. Furthermore, the mean value of $U$ is peculiar compared to the power spectrum.
We examine the statistical properties of polarization maps from Planck 2018 within the patch of sky observed by the BICEP2/Keck experiment using the one point distribution function (1PDF), skewness, and kurtosis statistics. Our analysis is performed for the Q and U Stokes parameters and for the corresponding E- and B-modes of the CMB signals. We extend our analysis by studying the correlations between CMB polarization maps and residual maps (the difference between the full signal and the CMB map) for the frequency range of 100--217 GHz with both the Q/U and E/B approaches. Although all the CMB…
We present a CMB large-scale polarization dataset obtained by combining WMAP Ka, Q and V with Planck 70 GHz maps. We employ the legacy frequency maps released by the WMAP and Planck collaborations and perform our own Galactic foreground mitigation technique, which relies on Planck 353 GHz for polarized dust and on Planck 30 GHz and WMAP K for polarized synchrotron. We derive a single, optimally-noise-weighted, low-residual-foreground map and the accompanying noise covariance matrix. These are shown, through $χ^2$ analysis, to be robust over an ample collection of Galactic masks. We use this da…
We present an estimation of the reionization optical depth $τ$ from an improved analysis of the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) data of Planck satellite. By using an improved version of the HFI map-making code, we greatly reduce the residual large scale contamination affecting the data, characterized, but not fully removed, in the Planck 2018 legacy release. This brings the dipole distortion systematic effect, contaminating the very low multipoles, below the noise level. On large scale polarization only data, we measure $τ=0.0566_{-0.0062}^{+0.0053}$ at $68\%$ C.L., reducing the Planck 2018 le…
If a single line of sight (LOS) intercepts multiple dust clouds of different spectral energy distributions and magnetic field orientations, the frequency scaling of each of the Stokes $Q$ and $U$ parameters of thermal dust emission may be different ("LOS frequency decorrelation"). We present first evidence for LOS frequency decorrelation in $Planck$ data. We use independent, neutral-hydrogen--measurements of the number of clouds per LOS and the magnetic field orientation in each cloud to select two sets of sightlines: (i) a target sample (pixels likely to exhibit LOS frequency decorrelation); …
