The clustering amplitude of galaxies depends on their intrinsic luminosity. We compare the properties of publicly available galaxy formation models with clustering measurements from the two-degree field galaxy redshift survey. The model predictions show the same qualitative behaviour as the data but fail to match the observations at the level of accuracy at which current measurements can be made. We demonstrate that this is due to the model producing too many satellite galaxies in massive haloes. We implement simple models to describe two new processes, satellite-satellite mergers and the tidal dissolution of satellites to investigate their impact on the predicted clustering. We find that both processes need to be included in order to produce a model which matches the observations.
Interpreting the small-scale clustering of galaxies with halo models can elucidate the connection between galaxies and dark matter halos. Unfortunately, the modelling is typically not sufficiently accurate for ruling out models statistically. It is thus difficult to use the information encoded in small scales to test cosmological models or probe subtle features of the galaxy-halo connection. In this paper, we attempt to push halo modelling into the "accurate" regime with a fully numerical mock-based methodology and careful treatment of statistical and systematic errors. With our forward-modell…
Halo models provide a simple and computationally inexpensive way to investigate the connection between galaxies and their dark matter haloes. However, these models rely on the assumption that the role of baryons can be easily parametrized in the modelling procedure. We aim to examine the ability of halo occupation distribution (HOD) modelling to reproduce the galaxy clustering found in two different hydrodynamic simulations, Illustris and EAGLE. For each simulation, we measure several galaxy clustering statistics on two different luminosity threshold samples. We then apply a simple five parame…
The spatial distribution of galaxies and their gravitational lensing signal offer complementary tests of galaxy formation physics and cosmology. However, their synergy can only be fully exploited if both probes are modelled accurately and consistently. In this paper, we demonstrate that this can be achieved using an extension of Subhalo Abundance Matching, dubbed SHAMe. Specifically, we use mock catalogues built from the TNG300 hydrodynamical simulation to show that SHAMe can simultaneously model the multipoles of the redshift-space galaxy correlation function and galaxy-galaxy lensing, withou…
We model the luminosity-dependent projected and redshift-space two-point correlation functions (2PCFs) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7 Main galaxy sample, using the halo occupation distribution (HOD) model and the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) model and its extension. All the models are built on the same high-resolution $N$-body simulations. We find that the HOD model generally provides the best performance in reproducing the clustering measurements in both projected and redshift spaces. The SHAM model with the same halo-galaxy relation for central and satellite galaxies (or dis…
We combine the GALFORM semi-analytical model of galaxy formation, which predicts the star formation and merger histories of galaxies, the GRASIL spectro-photometric code, which calculates the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of galaxies self-consistently including reprocessing of radiation by dust, and artificial neural networks (ANN), to investigate the clustering properties of galaxies selected by their emission at submillimetre wavelengths (SMGs). We use the Millennium Simulation to predict the spatial and angular distribution of SMGs. At redshift z = 2, we find that these galaxies are …
We model the high redshift (z > 5) Lyman-$α$ emitting (LAE) galaxy population using the empirical rest-frame equivalent width distribution. We calibrate to the observed luminosity function and angular correlation function at z = 5.7 as measured by the SILVERRUSH survey. This allows us to populate the high-dynamic-range Sherwood simulation suite with LAEs, and to calculate the transmission of their Ly $α$ emission through the inter-galactic medium (IGM). We use this simulated population to explore the effect of the IGM on high-redshift observations of LAEs, and make predictions for the narrowba…
Small- and intermediate-scale galaxy clustering can be used to establish the galaxy-halo connection to study galaxy formation and evolution and to tighten constraints on cosmological parameters. With the increasing precision of galaxy clustering measurements from ongoing and forthcoming large galaxy surveys, accurate models are required to interpret the data and extract relevant information. We introduce a method based on high-resolution N-body simulations to accurately and efficiently model the galaxy two-point correlation functions (2PCFs) in projected and redshift spaces. The basic idea is …
Improving the theoretical description of galaxy clustering on small scales is an important challenge in cosmology, as it can considerably increase the scientific return of forthcoming galaxy surveys -- e.g. tightening the bounds on neutrino masses and deviations from general relativity. In this paper, we propose and test a new model for the clustering of galaxies that is able to accurately describe redshift-space distortions even down to small scales. This model corresponds to a second-order perturbative Lagrangian bias expansion which is advected to Eulerian space employing a displacement fie…
Galaxy clustering sets strong constraints on the physics governing galaxy formation and evolution. However, most current models fail to reproduce the clustering of low-mass galaxies on small scales ($r<1Mpc/h$). In this paper we study the galaxy clusterings predicted from a few semi-analytical models. We firstly compare two Munich versions, Guo et al. (2011, Guo11) and De Lucia \& Blazoit (2007, DLB07). The Guo11 model well reproduces the galaxy stellar mass function, but over-predicts the clustering of low-mass galaxies on small scales. The DLB07 model provides a better fit to the clustering …
Understanding the galaxy-halo connection is fundamental for contemporary models of galaxy clustering. The extent to which the haloes' assembly history and environment impact galaxy clustering (a.k.a. galaxy assembly bias; GAB), remains a complex and challenging problem. Using a semi-analytic galaxy formation model, we study the individual contributions of different secondary halo properties to the GAB signal. These are obtained by comparing the clustering of stellar-mass selected samples to that of shuffled samples where the galaxies are randomly reassigned to haloes of fixed mass and a specif…
We construct halo occupation distribution (HOD) models of high redshift ($z \gtrsim 7.5$) galaxies with $M_{*}>10^8~M_{\odot}/h$ using the BlueTides hydrodynamic simulation suite, with a particular emphasis on modelling the small scale / 1-halo clustering ($0.01\lesssim r \lesssim 1~ h^{-1}\rm{Mpc}$). Similar to low redshift studies, we find that the central and satellite mean HODs ($\left<N_{\mathrm{cen}}\right>$ and $\left<N_{\mathrm{sat}}\right>$) can be modeled by a smoothed step function and a power law respectively. The number density of satellite galaxies is however significantly suppre…
We present a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) analysis of the luminosity- and colour-dependent galaxy clustering in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. A novelty of our technique is that it uses a combination of clustering measurements in luminosity bins to perform a global likelihood analysis, simultaneously constraining the HOD parameters for a range of luminosity thresholds. We present simple, smooth fitting functions which accurately describe the resulting luminosity dependence of the best-fit HOD parameters. To minimise systematic halo modelling effects, we use theoretical halo 2-point correl…
Weak lensing (WL) clustering is studied using 2D (angular) coordinates, while redshift space distortions (RSD) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) use 3D coordinates, which requires a model dependent conversion of angles and redshifts into comoving distances. This is the first paper of a series, which explore modelling multi-tracer galaxy clustering (of WL, BAO and RSD), using only angular (2D) cross-correlations in thin redshift bins. This involves evaluating many thousands cross-correlations, each a multidimensional integral, which is computationally demanding. We present a new algorithm …
We use a simulation-based modelling approach to analyse the anisotropic clustering of the BOSS LOWZ sample over the radial range $0.4 \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$ to $63 \, h^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}$, significantly extending what is possible with a purely analytic modelling framework. Our full-scale analysis yields constraints on the growth of structure that are a factor of two more stringent than any other study on large scales at similar redshifts. We infer $f σ_8 = 0.471 \pm 0.024$ at $z \approx 0.25$, and $f σ_8 = 0.431 \pm 0.025$ at $z \approx 0.40$; the corresponding $Λ$CDM predictions of the…
We investigate the ability of state-of-the-art redshift-space distortions models for the galaxy anisotropic two-point correlation function ξ(r_p, π), to recover precise and unbiased estimates of the linear growth rate of structure f, when applied to catalogues of galaxies characterised by a realistic bias relation. To this aim, we make use of a set of simulated catalogues at z = 0.1 and z = 1 with different luminosity thresholds, obtained by populating dark-matter haloes from a large N-body simulation using halo occupation prescriptions. We examine the most recent developments in redshift-spac…
The spatial clustering of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is considered to be one of the important diagnostics for the understanding of the underlying processes behind their activities complementary to measurements of the luminosity function (LF). We analyse the AGN clustering from a recent semi-analytic model performed on a large cosmological $N$-body simulation covering a cubic gigaparsec comoving volume. We have introduced a new time-scale of gas accretion on to the supermassive black holes to account for the loss of the angular momentum on small scales, which is required to match the faint e…
Observations of galaxy clustering are made in redshift space, which results in distortions to the underlying isotropic distribution of galaxies. These redshift-space distortions (RSD) not only degrade important features of the matter density field, such as the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) peaks, but also pose challenges for the theoretical modelling of observational probes. Here we introduce an iterative nonlinear reconstruction algorithm to remove RSD effects from galaxy clustering measurements, and assess its performance by using mock galaxy catalogues. The new method is found to be a…

Interacting dark energy models have been proposed as attractive alternatives to $Λ$CDM. Forthcoming Stage-IV galaxy clustering surveys will constrain these models, but they require accurate modelling of the galaxy power spectrum multipoles on mildly non-linear scales. In this work we consider a dark scattering model with a simple 1-parameter extension to $w$CDM - adding only $A$, which describes a pure momentum exchange between dark energy and dark matter. We then provide a comprehensive comparison of three approaches of modeling non-linearities, while including the effects of this dark sector…
The joint analysis of clustering and stacked gravitational lensing of galaxy clusters in large surveys can constrain the formation and evolution of structures and the cosmological parameters. On scales outside a few virial radii, the halo bias, $b$, is linear and the lensing signal is dominated by the correlated distribution of matter around galaxy clusters. We discuss a method to measure the power spectrum amplitude $σ_8$ and $b$ based on a minimal modelling. We considered a sample of $\sim 120000$ clusters photometrically selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in the redshift range $0.1<…
Joint constraints from cosmic shear, galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering: internal tension as an indicator of intrinsic alignment modelling error
We investigate how a property of a galaxy correlates most tightly with a property of its host dark matter halo, using state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy formation EAGLE, Illustris, and IllustrisTNG. Unlike most of the previous work, our analyses focus on all types of galaxies, including both central and satellite galaxies. We find that the stellar mass of a galaxy at the epoch of the peak circular velocity with an evolution correction gives the tightest such correlation to the peak circular velocity $V_{\rm peak}$ of the galaxy's underling dark matter halo. The evolution of …
We investigate the extent to which the pure magnification effect of gravitational lensing can be extracted from galaxy clustering statistics, by a nulling method which aims to eliminate terms arising from the intrinsic clustering of galaxies. The aim is to leave statistics which are free from the uncertainties of galaxy bias. We find that nulling can be done effectively, leaving data which are relatively insensitive to uncertainties in galaxy bias and its evolution, leading to cosmological parameter estimation which is effectively unbiased. This advantage comes at the expense of increased stat…
Accurate modelling of non-linear scales in galaxy clustering will be crucial for data analysis of Stage IV galaxy surveys. A selection of competing non-linear models must be made based on validation studies. We provide a comprehensive set of forecasts of two different models for the halo redshift space power spectrum, namely the commonly applied TNS model and an effective field theory of large scale structure (EFTofLSS) inspired model. Using simulation data and a least-$χ^2$ analysis, we determine ranges of validity for the models. We then conduct an exploratory Fisher analysis using the full …
We present the methodology for a joint cosmological analysis of weak gravitational lensing from the fourth data release of the ESO Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-1000) and galaxy clustering from the partially overlapping BOSS and 2dFLenS surveys. Cross-correlations between galaxy positions and ellipticities have been incorporated into the analysis, necessitating a hybrid model of non-linear scales that blends perturbative and non-perturbative approaches, and an assessment of contributions by astrophysical effects. All weak lensing signals are measured consistently via Fourier-space statistics that a…
