In this article we develop an effective theory of pulse propagation in a nonlinear and disordered medium. The theory is formulated in terms of a nonlinear diffusion equation. Despite its apparent simplicity this equation describes novel phenomena which we refer to as "locked explosion" and "diffusive" collapse. In this sense the equation can serve as a paradigmatic model, that can be applied to such distinct physical systems as laser beams propagating in disordered photonic crystals or Bose-Einstein condensates expanding in a disordered environment.
We study the dynamics of Dirac and Weyl electrons in disordered point-node semimetals. The ballistic feature of the transport is demonstrated by simulating the wave-packet dynamics on lattice models. We show that the ballistic transport survives under a considerable strength of disorder up to the semimetal-metal transition point, which indicates the robustness of point-node semimetals against disorder. We also visualize the robustness of the nodal points and linear dispersion under broken translational symmetry. The speed of the wave packets slows down with increasing disorder strength, and va…

We determine the cumulants of electromagnetic energy transmitted through one-dimensional disordered medium with absorption or amplification. For this purpose we derive the Keldysh nonlinear sigma-model action with a source term that generates the energy current fluctuations. The fluctuations over the ensemble of disorder realizations are found to decrease (increase) with increasing absorption (amplification). In the conservative medium the fluctuations can be related to the Dorokhov's distribution of transmission coefficients.
We develop an Effective Medium Theory to study the electrical transport properties of disordered graphene. The theory includes non-linear screening and exchange-correlation effects allowing us to consider experimentally relevant strengths of the Coulomb interaction. Assuming random Coulomb impurities, we calculate the electrical conductivity as a function of gate voltage describing quantitatively the full cross-over from the fluctuations dominated regime around the Dirac point to the large doping regime at high gate voltages. We find that the conductivity at the Dirac point is strongly affecte…
We consider a wave propagating through a thin disordered slab inside a wire or waveguide of finite width. In the dense weak scattering limit, the statistics for the complex reflection and transmission coefficients (the coherent field) is found to depend dramatically on the contribution of evanescent modes or closed channels, leading to an effective refractive index whose real part is quite sensitive to the closed channels inclusion. In contrast, evanescent modes play no role in the statistical average of transmittances and reflectances. The theoretical predictions, based on the perturbative Bo…
The Faraday rotation angle is calculated in a diffusive regime in a three dimensional disordered slab. It is shown that it is an oscillating function of the magnetic field or the mediums internal properties, and is proportional to the ratio of the inelastic mean free path to the mean free path, that is to the average number of photon scatterings. The maximum rotation is achieved at frequencies when the photons elastic mean free path is minimal. We have obtained the rotation angle of polar backscattered light taking into account the maximally crossed diagrams. The latter leads to an ellipticity…
In realistic nanoelectronics, disordered impurities/defects are inevitable and play important roles in electron transport. However, due to the lack of effective quantum transport method to do disorder average, the important effects of disorders remain largely un-explored or poorly understood. Here, we report a generalized non-equilibrium vertex correction method with coherent potential approximation for the non-equilibrium quantum transport simulation of disordered nanoelectronics. In this method, the disorder average of various Green's functions are computed by a generalized coherent potentia…
It has been shown that changes in the energy of a system of nonwetting-liquid clusters confined in a random nanoporous medium in the process of relaxation can be written in the quasiparticle approximation in the form of the sum of the energies of local (metastable) configurations of liquid clusters interacting with clusters in the connected nearest pores. The energy spectrum and density of states of the local configuration have been calculated. It has been shown that the relaxation of the state of the system occurs through the scenario of self-organized criticality (SOC). The process is charac…
