When a shell collapses through its horizon, semiclassical physics suggests that information cannot escape from this horizon. One might hope that nonperturbative quantum gravity effects will change this situation and avoid the `information paradox'. We note that string theory has provided a set of states over which the wavefunction of the shell can spread, and that the number of these states is large enough that such a spreading would significantly modify the classically expected evolution. In this article we perform a simple estimate of the spreading time, showing that it is much shorter than the Hawking evaporation time for the hole. Thus information can emerge from the hole through the relaxation of the shell state into a linear combination of fuzzballs.
We propose a step towards a resolution to black hole information paradox by analyzing scattering amplitudes of a complex scalar field around a Schwarzschild black hole. The scattering cross section reveals much information on the incoming state but exhibits flux loss at the same time. The flux loss should be temporary, and indicate mass growth of the black hole. The black hole should Hawking-radiate subsequently, thereby, compensating for the flux loss. {By examining the purity issue}, we comment on the possibility that information bleaching may be the key to the paradox.
We investigate the upper limit of the gravitational radiation released upon the collision of two dilatonic black holes by analyzing the Gauss-Bonnet term. Dilatonic black holes have a dilaton hair coupled with this term. Using the laws of thermodynamics, the upper limit of the radiation is obtained, which reflected the effects of the dilaton hair. The amount of radiation released is greater than that emitted by a Schwarzschild black hole due to the contribution from the dilaton hair. In the collision, most of the dilaton hair can be released through radiation, where the energy radiated by the …
We study echoes of free massless scalar from dyonic black holes in Einstein-Maxwell gravity extended with the quasi-topological electromagnetic term. These asymptotically-flat black holes all satisfy the dominant energy condition. We find that for suitable parameters, the effective potential can have double peaks and consequently echoes of quasinormal modes arise. In general the echo frequency associated with the initial wave packet released inside the two peaks is about twice the frequency of the one released outside.
Unitarization of black hole evaporation requires that quantum information escapes a black hole; an important question is to identify the mechanism or channel by which it does so. Accurate counting of black hole states via the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy would indicate this information should be encoded in radiation with average energy flux matching Hawking's. Information can be encoded with no change in net flux via fine-grained modulation of the Hawking radiation. In an approximate effective field theory description, couplings to the stress tensor of the black hole atmosphere that depend on th…
We argue that the rate of Standard Model vacuum or thermal decay seeded by primordial black holes is negligible (because non-perturbatively suppressed by the small quartic Higgs coupling) and independent of the non-minimal coupling of the Higgs to gravity.
In a recent article, we have shown how quantum fluctuations of the background geometry modify Hawking's density matrix for black hole (BH) radiation. Hawking's diagonal matrix picks up small off-diagonal elements whose influence becomes larger with the number of emitted particles. We have calculated the "time-of-first-bit", when the first bit of information comes out of the BH, and the "transparency time", when the rate of information release becomes order unity. We have found that the transparency time is equal to the "Page time", when the BH has lost half of its initial entropy to the radiat…
Most extreme-mass-ratio-inspirals of small compact objects into supermassive black holes end with a fast plunge from an eccentric last stable orbit. For rapidly rotating black holes such fast plunges may be studied in the context of the Kerr/CFT correspondence because they occur in the near-horizon region where dynamics are governed by the infinite dimensional conformal symmetry. In this paper we use conformal transformations to analytically solve for the radiation emitted from fast plunges into near-extreme Kerr black holes. We find perfect agreement between the gravity and CFT computations.
Inhomogeneity of the actual value of the vacuum energy density is considered in a black hole background. We examine the back-reaction of a Schwarzschild black hole to the highly inhomogeneous vacuum density, and argue the fluctuations lead to deviations from general relativity in the near-horizon region. In particular, we found that vacuum fluctuations onto the horizon trigger adiabatic release of quantum information, while vacuum fluctuations in the vicinity of the horizon produce potentially observable metric fluctuations of order the Schwarzschild radius. Consequently, we propose a form of …

We propose that fast scrambling on finite-entropy stretched horizons can be modeled by a diffusion process on an effective ultrametric geometry. A scrambling time scaling logarithmically with the entropy is obtained when the elementary transition rates saturate causality bounds on the stretched horizon. The so-defined ultrametric diffusion becomes unstable in the infinite-entropy limit. A formally regularized version can be shown to follow a particular case of the Kohlrausch law.

We discuss a novel mechanism of axion production during scattering of Alfven waves by a fast moving Schwarzschild black holes. The process couples classical macroscopic objects, and effectively large amplitude electromagnetic (EM) waves, to microscopic axions. The key ingredient is that the motion of a black hole (BH) across magnetic field creates classical non-zero second Poincare invariant, the electromagnetic anomaly (Lyutikov 2011). In the case of magnetized plasma supporting Alfven wave, it is the fluctuating component of the magnetic field that contributes to the anomaly: for sufficiency…
Black-hole spacetimes with a "photonsphere", a hypersurface on which massless particles can orbit the black hole on circular null geodesics, are studied. We prove that among all possible trajectories (both geodesic and non-geodesic) which circle the central black hole, the null circular geodesic is characterized by the {\it shortest} possible orbital period as measured by asymptotic observers. Thus, null circular geodesics provide the fastest way to circle black holes. In addition, we conjecture the existence of a universal lower bound for orbital periods around compact objects (as measured by…
The effective action for QED in curved spacetime includes equivalence principle violating interactions between the electromagnetic field and the spacetime curvature. These interactions admit the possibility of superluminal yet causal photon propagation in gravitational fields. In this paper, we extend our analysis of photon propagation in gravitational backgrounds to the Kerr spacetime describing a rotating black hole. The results support two general theorems -- a polarisation sum rule and a `horizon theorem'. The implications for the stationary limit surface bounding the ergosphere are also d…
As a complementary or companion process to the Blandford-Znajek mechanism for the rotational energy extraction from a Kerr black hole to serve as a viable model for the central engine of quasar, AGN and even GRB, the magnetic alignment process is proposed. In contrast to the environment assumed in the Blandford-Znajek mechanism in which the rotating hole's spin axis and the asymptotic direction of the magnetic field are aligned, this new process operates when they are generally misaligned which obviously is the more natural situation likely to happen. The time scales over which these two proce…
Hawking's radiance, even as computed without account of backreaction, departs from blackbody form due to the mode dependence of the barrier penetration factor. Thus the radiation is not the maximal entropy radiation for given energy. By comparing estimates of the actual entropy emission rate with the maximal entropy rate for the given power, and using standard ideas from communication theory, we set an upper bound on the permitted information outflow rate. This is several times the rates of black hole entropy decrease or radiation entropy production. Thus, if subtle quantum effects not heretof…
Fast scramblers process information in characteristic times scaling logarithmically with the entropy, a behavior which has been conjectured for black hole horizons. In this note we use the AdS/CFT fold to argue that causality bounds on information flow only depend on the properties of a single thermal cell, and admit a geometrical interpretation in terms of the optical depth, i.e. the thickness of the Rindler region in the so-called optical metric. The spatial sections of the optical metric are well approximated by constant-curvature hyperboloids. We use this fact to propose an effective kinet…
We present a scenario for fast growth of cosmological perturbations; $δ(t) \sim a(t)^s$, $a(t)$ being the scale factor, with $s > 10$ for the numerical examples reported in this article. The basic ingredients of the scenario are an early matter dominated era and the dark fermion which experiences a scalar mediated force during the epoch. Both of these arise in string/supergravity models. The fast growth occurs for sub-horizon density perturbations of the dark fermion. The fast growth has a rich set of phenomenological implications. We outline implications for the formation of primordial black …
Two seemingly distinct notions regarding black holes have captured the imagination of theoretical physicists over the past decade: First, black holes are conjectured to be fast scramblers of information, a notion that is further supported through connections to quantum chaos and decay of mutual information via AdS/CFT holography. Second, black hole information paradox has motivated exotic quantum structure near horizons of black holes (e.g., gravastars, fuzzballs, or firewalls) that may manifest themselves through delayed gravitational wave echoes in the aftermath of black hole formation or me…
Kerr black holes have their angular momentum, $J$, bounded by their mass, $M$: $Jc\leqslant GM^2$. There are, however, known black hole solutions violating this Kerr bound. We propose a very simple universal bound on the rotation, rather than on the angular momentum, of four-dimensional, stationary and axisymmetric, asymptotically flat black holes, given in terms of an appropriately defined horizon linear velocity, $v_H$. The $v_H$ bound is simply that $v_H$ cannot exceed the velocity of light. We verify the $v_H$ bound for known black hole solutions, including some that violate the Kerr bound…
Photons propagating in curved spacetime may, depending on their direction and polarisation, have velocities exceeding the ``speed of light'' c. This phenomenon arises through vacuum polarisation in QED and is a tidal gravitational effect depending on the local curvature. It implies that the Principle of Equivalence does not hold for interacting quantum field theories in curved spacetime and reflects a quantum violation of local Lorentz invariance. These results are illustrated for the propagation of photons in the Reissner-Nordström spacetime characterising a charged black hole. A general anal…
Recently, various authors have proposed that the first ultraviolet effect on the gravitational collapse of massive stars to black holes is the transition between a black-hole geometry and a white-hole geometry, though their proposals are radically different in terms of their physical interpretation and characteristic time scales [1,2]. Several decades ago, it was shown by Eardley that white holes are highly unstable to the accretion of small amounts of matter, being rapidly turned into black holes [3]. Studying the crossing of null shells on geometries describing the black-hole to white-hole t…
We extend the recent microscopic analysis of extremal dyonic Kaluza-Klein (D0-D6) black holes to cover the regime of fast rotation in addition to slow rotation. Fastly rotating black holes, in contrast to slow ones, have non-zero angular velocity and possess ergospheres, so they are more similar to the Kerr black hole. The D-brane model reproduces their entropy exactly, but the mass gets renormalized from weak to strong coupling, in agreement with recent macroscopic analyses of rotating attractors. We discuss how the existence of the ergosphere and superradiance manifest themselves within the …
Numerous {\it numerical} investigations of the quasinormal resonant spectra of Kerr-Newman black holes have revealed the interesting fact that the characteristic relaxation times $τ({\bar a},{\bar Q})$ of these canonical black-hole spacetimes can be described by a two-dimensional function ${\bar τ}\equiv τ/M$ which increases monotonically with increasing values of the dimensionless angular-momentum parameter ${\bar a}\equiv J/M^2$ and, in addition, is characterized by a non-trivial ({\it non}-monotonic) functional dependence on the dimensionless charge parameter ${\bar Q}\equiv Q/M$. In partic…
The scrambling time and its delay are calculated using holography in an asymptotically AdS black hole solution of the gauged Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) theory, the dyonic Kerr-Sen-AdS$_4$ black hole, perturbed by rotating and charged shock waves along the equator. The leading term of the scrambling time for a black hole with large entropy is logarithmic in the entropy and hence supports the fast scrambling conjecture for this black hole solution, which implies that the system under consideration is chaotic. We also find that the instantaneous minimal Lyapunov index is bounded by $κ=…
We have found that for extreme dilaton black holes an inner boundary must be introduced in addition to the outer boundary to give an integer value to the Euler number. The resulting manifolds have (if one identifies imaginary time) topology $S^1 \times R \times S^2 $ and Euler number $χ= 0$ in contrast to the non-extreme case with $χ=2$. The entropy of extreme $U(1)$ dilaton black holes is already known to be zero. We include a review of some recent ideas due to Hawking on the Reissner-Nordström case. By regarding all extreme black holes as having an inner boundary, we conclude that the entrop…
There is a simple bound on how fast the entanglement entropy of a subregion of a many-body quantum system can saturate in a quench: $t_\text{sat}\geq R/v_B$, where $t_\text{sat}$ is the saturation time, $R$ the radius of the largest inscribed sphere, and $v_B$ the butterfly velocity characterizing operator growth. By combining analytic and numerical approaches, we show that in systems with a holographic dual, the saturation time is equal to this lower bound for a variety of differently shaped entangling surfaces, implying that the dual black holes saturate the entanglement entropy as fast as p…
We investigate the effect of quantum correction on Hawking radiation for Schwarzschild black holes. We consider Hawking temperature and entropy to order G^2 and find that the area law of black holes should be modified. We think of Hawking radiation as tunneling and find that at certain frequency ω the radiation spectrum of black holes can be pure blackbody spectrum. Therefore, it is possible to break down information conservation. In order to ensure information conservation at any energy scales, we suggest that black holes cannot release all information they have. We briefly discuss the bound …

We study modifications of the Hawking emission in the evaporation of miniature black holes possibly produced in accelerators when their mass approaches the fundamental scale of gravity, set to 1 TeV according to some extra dimension models. Back-reaction and quantum gravity corrections are modelled by employing modified relations between the black hole mass and temperature. We release the assumption that black holes explode at 1 TeV or leave a remnant, and let them evaporate to much smaller masses. We have implemented such modified decay processes into an existing micro-black hole event genera…

We investigate possible signatures of long-lived (or stable) charged black holes at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, we find that black hole remnants are characterised by quite low speed. Due to this fact, the charged remnants could, in some cases, be very clearly distinguished from the background events, exploiting dE/dX measurements. We also compare the estimate energy released by such remnants with that of typical Standard Model particles, using the Bethe-Bloch formula.
Frequency domain studies have recently demonstrated that charged scalar fields exhibit fast growing superradiant instabilities when interacting with charged black holes in a cavity. Here, we present a time domain analysis of the long time evolution of test charged scalar field configurations on the Reissner-Nordström background, with or without a mirror-like boundary condition. Initial data is taken to be either a Gaussian wave packet or a regularised (near the horizon) quasi-bound state. Then, Fourier transforming the data obtained in the evolution confirms the results obtained in the frequen…
We have investigated spin interaction under the collision of Kerr-(anti-)de Sitter black holes. The potential of a spin interaction is dependent on the relative rotating directions of the black holes, and this potential can be released as gravitational radiation under the collision. The radiation depends on the cosmological constant and corresponds to the potential of the spin interaction at a limit where one of the black holes is assumed to have small mass and angular momentum. Then, we have shown, approximately, the overall behaviors of the upper bounds on the radiation using thermodynamics.…
We present a calculation of the rate of information release from a Schwarzschild BH. We have recently extended Hawking's theory of black hole (BH) evaporation to account for quantum fluctuations of the background geometry, as well as for back-reaction and time-dependence effects. Our main result has been a two-point function matrix for the radiation that consists of Hawking's thermal matrix plus off-diagonal corrections that are initially small and become more important as the evaporation proceeds. Here, we show that, if the phases and amplitudes of the radiation matrix are recorded over the l…
Superradiant instability turns rotating astrophysical black holes into unique probes of light axions. We consider what happens when a light axion is coupled to a strongly coupled hidden gauge sector. In this case superradiance results in an adiabatic increase of a hidden sector CP-violating $θ$-parameter in a near horizon region. This may trigger a first order phase transition in the gauge sector. As a result a significant fraction of a black hole mass is released as a cloud of hidden mesons and can be later converted into electromagnetic radiation. This results in a violent electromagnetic bu…
