Within the framework of the (3+1)-dimensional Lorentz-violating extended electrodynamics including the CPT-odd Chern-Simons term, we consider the electromagnetic field between the two parallel perfectly conducting plates. We find the one-particle eigenstates of such a field, as well as the implicit expression for the photon energy spectrum. We also show that the tachyon-induced vacuum instability vanishes when the separation between the plates is sufficiently small though finite. In order to find the leading Chern-Simons correction to the vacuum energy, we renormalize and evaluate the sum over all one-particle eigenstate energies using the two different methods, the zeta function technique and the transformation of the discrete sum into a complex plane integral via the residue theorem. The resulting correction to the Casimir force, which is attractive and quadratic in the Chern-Simons term, disagrees with the one calculated in [M.Frank and I.Turan, Phys.Rev.D 74, 033016(2006)], using the misinterpreted equations of motion. Compared to the experimental data, our result places a constraint on the absolute value of the Chern-Simons term.
We calculate the Casimir force between two parallel plates if the boundary conditions for the photons are modified due to presence of the Chern-Simons term. We show that this effect should be measurable within the present experimental technique.
In odd-dimensional spaces, gauge invariance permits a Chern-Simons mass term for the gauge fields in addition to the usual Maxwell-Yang-Mills kinetic energy term. We study the Casimir effect in such a (2+1)-dimensional Abelian theory. For the case of parallel conducting lines the result is the same as for a scalar field. For the case of circular boundary conditions the results are completely different, with even the sign of the effect being opposite for Maxwell-Chern-Simons fields and scalar fields. We further examine the effect of finite temperature. The Casimir stress is found to be attracti…
A simple, but effcient way of calculating regularized Casimir energies suitable for non-trivial frequency spectra is briefly described and applied to the case of a kappa-deformed scalar field theory. The results are consistent with the ones obtained by other means.
Quantum electrodynamic fields possess fluctuations corresponding to transient particle/antiparticle dipoles, which can be characterized by a non-vanishing polarizability density. Here, we extend a recently proposed quantum scaling law to describe the volumetric and radial polarizability density of a quantum field corresponding to electrons and positrons and derive the Casimir self-interaction energy (SIE) density of the field, $\bar{E}_{\rm{SIE}}$, in terms of the fine-structure constant. The proposed model obeys the cosmological equation of state $w=-1$ and the magnitude of the calculated $\b…
The theory of a complex scalar interacting with a pure Chern-Simons gauge field is quantized canonically. Dynamical and nondynamical variables are separated in a gauge-independent way. In the physical subspace of the full Hilbert space, this theory reduces to a pure scalar theory with nonlocal interaction. Several scattering processes are studied and the cross sections are calculated.
We make a detailed investigation on the quantum corrections to Chern-Simons spinor electrodynamics. Starting from Chern-Simons spinor quantum electrodynamics with the Maxwell term $-1/(4γ){\int}d^3x F_{μν}F^{μν}$ and by calculating the vacuum polarization tensor, electron self-energy and on-shell vertex, we explicitly show that the Ward identity is satisfied and hence verify that the physical quantities are independent of the procedure of taking $γ{\to}{\infty}$ at one-loop and tree levels. In particular, we find the three-dimensional analogue of the Schwinger anomalous magnetic moment term of…
The theory of a spinor field interacting with a pure Chern-Simons gauge field in 2+1 dimensions is quantized. Dynamical and nondynamical variables are separated in a gauge-independent way. After the nondynamical variables are dropped, this theory reduces to a pure spinor field theory with nonlocal interaction. Several two-body scattering processes are studied and the cross sections are obtained in explicitly Lorentz invariant forms.
In this work the generation of generalized Chern-Simons terms in three dimensional quantum electrodynamics with high spatial derivatives is studied. We analyze the self-energy corrections to the gauge field propagator by considering an expansion of the amplitude up to third order in the external momenta. The divergences of the corrections are determined and explicit forms for the Chern-Simons terms with high derivatives are obtained. Some unusual aspects of the calculation are stressed and the existence of a smooth isotropic limit is proved. The transversality of the anisotropic gauge propagat…
Differential regularization is used to investigate the one-loop quantum corrections to Chern-Simons-Maxwell spinor and scalar electrodynamics. We illustrate the techniques to write the loop amplitudes in coordinate space. The short-distance expansion method is developed to perform the Fourier transformation of the amplitudes into momentum space and the possible renormalization ambiguity in Chern-Simons type gauge theories in terms of differential regularization is discussed. We also stress that the surface terms appearing in the differential regularization should be kept along for finite theor…
We critically review the possibilities of a repulsive Casimir interaction between materials which carry Chern-Simons surface actions for the electromagnetic field.
We show that the ambiguity for the Chern-Simons-like term induced from quantum correction in the extended QED should have nothing to do with the approximation on the exact fermionic propagator, contradictory to the claim in Ref.[19]. Further, we investigate the induced Chern-Simons-like term using the original 't Hooft-Veltman dimensional regularization and reproduce the result obtained by gauge symmetry analysis. This fact demonstrates that the origin of the ambiguity should lie in different choices on regularization schemes.
A novel formalism for the evaluation of the Casimir-Polder potential in an arbitrary gauge of vector potentials is introduced. The ground state energy of a neutral atom in the presence of an infinite two-dimensional plane with Chern-Simons interaction is derived at zero temperature. The essential feature of the result is its dependence on the antisymmetric part of a dipole moment correlation function.
In this paper we propose a very special relativity (VSR)-inspired generalization of the Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) electrodynamics. This proposal is based upon the construction of a proper study of the SIM$(1)$--VSR gauge-symmetry. It is shown that the VSR nonlocal effects present a significant and health departure from the usual MCS theory. The classical dynamics is analysed in full detail, by studying the solution for the electric field and static energy for this configuration. Afterwards, the interaction energy between opposite charges are derived and we show that the VSR effects play an im…
We have studied BPS vortices in a CPT-odd and Lorentz-violating Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs (MCSH) electrodynamics attained from the dimensional reduction of the Carroll-Field-Jackiw-Higgs model. The Lorentz-violating parameter induces a pronounced behavior at origin (for the magnetic/electric fields and energy density) which is absent in the MCSH vortices. For some combination of the Lorentz-violating coefficients there always exist a sufficiently large winding number $n_{0}$ such that for all $% |n|\geq |n_{0}|$ the magnetic field flips its signal, yielding two well defined regions with oppos…
The (2+1) dimensional non-linear electrodynamics, the so called Pagels--Tomboulis electrodynamics, with the Chern--Simons term is considered. We obtain "generalized self--dual equation" and find the corresponding generalized massive Chern--Simons Lagrangian. Similar results for (2+1) massive dilaton electrodynamics have been obtained.
It is shown that the non-relativistic `Dirac' equation of Lévy-Leblond, we used recently to describe a spin $1/2$ field interacting non-relativistically with a Chern-Simons gauge field, can be obtained by lightlike reduction from $3+1$ dimensions. This allows us to prove that the system is Schrödinger symmetric. A spinor representation of the Schrödinger group is presented. Static, self-dual solutions, describing spinor vortices are given and shown to be the non-relativistic limits of the fermionic vortices found by Cho et al. The construction is extended to external harmonic and uniform magne…
We discuss the reduction of gravitating Chern-Simons electrodynamics with two commuting Killing vectors to a dynamical problem with four degrees of freedom, and present regular particle-like solutions.
We take as starting point the planar model arising from the dimensional reduction of the Maxwell Electrodynamics with the (Lorentz-violating) Carroll-Field-Jackiw term. We then write and study the extended Maxwell equations and the corresponding wave equations for the potentials. The solution to these equations show some interesting deviations from the usual MCS Electrodynamics, with background-dependent correction terms. In the case of a time-like background, the correction terms dominate over the MCS sector in the region far from the origin, and establish the behaviour of a massless Electrod…
We study the electrodynamics of generic charged particles (bosons, fermions, relativistic or not) constrained to move on an infinite plane. An effective gauge theory in 2+1 dimensional spacetime which describes the real electromagnetic interaction of this particles is obtained. The relationship between this effective theory with the Chern-Simons theory is explored. It is shown that the QED lagrangian {\it per se} produces the Chern-Simons constraint relating the current to the effective gauge field in 2+1 D. It is also shown that the geometry of the system unavoidably induces a contribution fr…
A diffraction problem for a flat Chern-Simons layer at plane boundary of a dielectric half space is solved. The Casimir energy of two dielectric half spaces with Chern-Simons layers at plane-parallel boundaries separated by a vacuum slit is derived. Crossing from the repulsive to the attractive Casimir force is analyzed for two Au and two Si half spaces with boundary Chern-Simons layers. Boundary quantum Hall layers in external magnetic field lead to Casimir repulsion at nanoscales. We discuss features that make systems with boundary quantum Hall layers unique for force measurements and search…
The one-loop quantum corrections of Chern-Simons spinor electrodynamics in the light-cone gauge has been investigated. We have calculated the vacuum polarization tensor, fermionic self-energy and on-shell vertex correction with a hybrid regularization consisting of a higher covariant derivative regularization and dimensional continuation. The Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription is used to handle the spurious light-cone singularity in the gauge field propagator. We then perform the finite renormalization to define the quantum theory. The generation of the parity-even Maxwell term and the arising…
We study the Casimir effect in axion electrodynamics. A finite $θ$-term affects the energy dispersion relation of photon if $θ$ is time and/or space dependent. We focus on a special case with linearly inhomogeneous $θ$ along the $z$-axis. Then we demonstrate that the Casimir force between two parallel plates perpendicular to the $z$-axis can be either attractive or repulsive, dependent on the gradient of $θ$. We call this repulsive component in the Casimir force induced by inhomogeneous $θ$ the anomalous Casimir effect.
We compare the vortex-like solutions of two different theories in (2+1) dimensions. In the first a nonrelativistic field self-interacts through a Chern-Simons gauge connection. It is $P$ and $T$ violating. The second is the standard Maxwell scalar electrodynamics. We show that for specific values of some parameters the same vortex-configurations provide solutions for both theories.
We examine the nonperturbative structure of the radiatively induced Chern-Simons term in a Lorentz- and CPT-violating modification of QED. Although the coefficient of the induced Chern-Simons term is in general undetermined, the nonperturbative theory appears to generate a definite value. However, the CPT-even radiative corrections in this same formulation of the theory generally break gauge invariance. We show that gauge invariance may yet be preserved through the use of a Pauli-Villars regulator, and, contrary to earlier expectations, this regulator does not necessarily give rise to a vanish…
We study a nonlocal theory that combines both the Pseudo quantum electrodynamics (PQED) and Chern-Simons actions among two-dimensional electrons. In the static limit, we conclude that the competition of these two interactions yields a Coulomb potential with a screened electric charge given by $e^2/(1+θ^2)$, where $θ$ is the dimensionless Chern-Simons parameter. This could be useful for describing the substrate interaction with two-dimensional materials and the doping dependence of the dielectric constant in graphene. In the dynamical limit, we calculate the effective current-current action of …
We study the Topological Casimir effect, in which extra vacuum energy emerges as a result of the topological features of the theory, rather than due to the conventional fluctuations of the physical propagating degrees of freedom. We compute the corresponding topological term in quantum Maxwell theory defined on a compact manifold. Numerically, the topological effect is much smaller than the conventional Casimir effect. However, we argue that the Topological Casimir Effect is highly sensitive to an external magnetic field, which may help to discriminate it from the conventional Casimir effect. …
We consider the Casimir energy in a geometry of an infinite magnetodielectric wedge closed by a circularly cylindrical, perfectly conducting arc embedded in another magnetodielectric medium, under the condition that the speed of light be the same in both media. An expression for the Casimir energy corresponding to the arc is obtained and it is found that in the limit where the reflectivity of the wedge boundaries tends to unity the finite part of the Casimir energy of a perfectly conducting wedge-shaped sheet closed by a circular cylinder is regained. The energy of the latter geometry possesse…
Classical Maxwell and Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) Electrodynamics in (2+1)D are studied in some details. General expressions for the potential and fields are obtained for both models, and some particular cases are explicitly solved. Conceptual and technical difficulties arise, however, for accelerated charges. The propagation of electromagnetic signals is also studied and their reverberation is worked out and discussed. Furthermore, we show that a Dirac-like monopole yields a (static) tangential electric field. We also discuss some classical and quantum consequences of the field created by such…
The Chern-Simons-type term in the photon sector of the Lorentz- and CPT-breaking minimal Standard-Model Extension (mSME) is considered. It is argued that under certain circumstances this term can be removed from the mSME. In particular, it is demonstrated that for lightlike Lorentz violation a field redefinition exists that maps the on-shell free Chern-Simons model to conventional on-shell free electrodynamics. A compact explicit expression for an operator implementing such a mapping is constructed. This expression establishes that the field redefinition is non-local.
A general scheme for axion electrodynamics is given, in which a surrounding medium of constant permittivity and permeability is assumed. Then, as an application we give simple numerical estimates for the electromagnetic current density produced by the electrically neutral time-dependent axions $a=a(t)$ in a strong magnetic field. As is known, the assumption $a=a(t)$ is common under astrophysical conditions. In the third part of the paper, we consider the implications by assuming instead an axion amplitude $a(z)$ depending on one coordinate $z$ only. If such an axion field is contained within t…
We study the non-perturbative phenomena of Dynamical Mass Generation and Confinement by truncating at the non-perturbative level the Schwinger-Dyson equations in Maxwell-Chern-Simons planar quantum electrodynamics. We obtain numerical solutions for the fermion propagator in Landau gauge within the so-called rainbow approximation. A comparison with the ordinary theory without the Chern-Simons term is presented.
In this paper we critically reconsider the Casimir repulsion between surfaces that carry the Chern-Simons interaction (corresponding to the Hall type conductivity). We present a derivation of the Lifshitz formula valid for arbitrary planar geometries and discuss its properties. This analysis allows us to resolve some contradictions in the previous literature. We compute the Casimir energy for two surfaces that have constant longitudinal and Hall conductivities. The repulsion is possible only if both surfaces have Hall conductivities of the same sign. However, there is a critical value of the l…
Recently proposed Lorentz-PCT noninvariant modifications of electromagnetism are reviewed. Their experimental consequences are described, and it is argued that available data decisively rules out their occurrence in Nature.
The Casimir effect is one of the most remarkable consequences of the non-zero vacuum energy predicted by quantum field theory. In this paper we use a local approach to study the Lorentz violation effects of the minimal standard model extension on the Casimir force between two parallel conducting plates in the vacuum. Using a perturbative method similar to that used for obtaining the Born series for the scattering amplitudes in quantum mechanics, we compute, at leading order in the Lorentz-violating coefficients, the relevant Green's function which satisfies given boundary conditions. The stand…
Taking as starting point the planar model arising from the dimensional reduction of the Abelian-Higgs Carroll-Field-Jackiw model, we write down and study the extended Maxwell equations and the corresponding wave equations for the potentials. The solutions for these equations correspond to the usual ones for the MCS-Proca system, supplemented with background-dependent correction terms. In the case of a purely timelike background, exact algebraic solutions are presented which possess a similar behavior to the MCS-Proca counterparts near and far from the origin. On the other hand, for a purely sp…
The dynamical breaking of gauge symmetry in the supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics in three-dimensional spacetime is studied at two-loop approximation. At this level, the effective superpotential is evaluated in a supersymmetric phase. At one-loop order, we observe a generation of the Chern-Simons term due to a parity violating term present in the classical action. At two-loop order, the scalar background superfield acquires a nonvanishing vacuum expectation value, generating a mass term $A^αA_α$ through Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. It is observed that the mass of gauge superfield is predom…
The CPT-even sector of the standard model extension amounts to extending Maxwell electrodynamics by a gauge invariant term of the form $- \frac{1}{4} (k _{F}) _{αβμν} F ^{αβ} F ^{μν}$, where the Lorentz-violating (LV) background tensor $(k _{F}) _{αβμν}$ possesses the symmetries of the Riemann tensor. The electrodynamics in ponderable media is still described by Maxwell equations in matter with modified constitutive relations which depend on the coefficients for Lorentz violation. We study the effects of this theory on the Casimir force between two semi-infinite ponderable media. The Fresnel c…
We show explicitly that the question of gauge invariance of the effective potential in standard scalar electrodynamics remains unchanged despite the introduction of the Chern-Simons term. The result does not depend on the presence of the Maxwell term in the Chern-Simons territory.
The Maxwell-Chern-Simons gauge theory with charged scalar fields is analyzed at two loop level. The effective potential for the scalar fields is derived in the closed form, and studied both analytically and numerically. It is shown that the U(1) symmetry is spontaneously broken in the massless scalar theory. Dimensional transmutation takes place in the Coleman-Weinberg limit in which the Maxwell term vanishes. We point out the subtlety in defining the pure Chern-Simons scalar electrodynamics and show that the Coleman-Weinberg limit must be taken after renormalization. Renormalization group ana…
Mainly on nano-scale, but maybe not exclusively, it can be imagined a spontaneous charge disjunction inside certain media due to the fluctuations, collisions, wall effects, radiation or/and other presently unknown interactions. The repulsive Casimir-Lifshitz force may be also a good candidate as a source of this kind of phenomenon. To cover this assumption mathematically an additional term should appear in the Maxwell equations. As a consequence of this term, similar Klein-Gordon equations with a negative mass term will be obtained for the electric and magnetic fields. These equations may have…
Compact U(1) gauge theory in 3+1 dimensions possesses the confining phase, characterized by a linear raise of the potential between particles with opposite electric charges at sufficiently large inter-particle separation. The confinement is generated by condensation of Abelian monopoles at strong gauge coupling. We study the properties of monopoles and the deconfining order parameter in zero-temperature theory in the presence of ideally conducting parallel metallic boundaries (plates) usually associated with the Casimir effect. Using first-principle numerical simulations in compact U(1) lattic…
We consider the static quantum potential for a gauge theory which includes a light massive vector field interacting with the familiar $U(1)_{QED}$ photon via a Chern-Simons- like coupling, by using the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent, variables formalism. An exactly screening phase is then obtained, which displays a marked departure of a qualitative nature from massive axionic electrodynamics. The above static potential profile is similar to that encountered in axionic electrodynamics consisting of a massless axion-like field, as well as to that encountered in the coupling between the fami…
We re-examine the electrodynamic Casimir effect in a wedge defined by two perfect conductors making dihedral angle α=π/p. This system is analogous to the system defined by a cosmic string. We consider the wedge region as filled with an azimuthally symmetric material, with permittivity/permeability ε_1,μ_1 for distance from the axis r<a, and ε_2,μ_2 for r>a. The results are closely related to those for a circular-cylindrical geometry, but with non-integer azimuthal quantum number mp. Apart from a zero-mode divergence, which may be removed by choosing periodic boundary conditions on the wedge, a…
Though screened at large distances, a point-like electric charge can still participate in a long-range electromagnetic interaction in the Higgs phase, namely that with the Aharonov-Bohm field produced by a localized magnetic flux. We show that this follows from the fact that the screening charge, induced in the presence of a Higgs condensate, does not interact with the Aharonov-Bohm field. The same phenomenon occurs, if a Chern-Simons term is incorporated in the action. This observation provides a physical basis for the recently proposed classification of the superselection sectors of this mod…
We explore a model of gravity that arises from the consideration of the Chern-Simons form in 2+1 dimensions for a spin connection with a contorsion described by a scalar and a vector field. The effective Lagrangian presents a local Weyl symmetry allowing us to gauge the scalar field to a constant value. From a gauge field theory perspective, it is shown that the vector part of the torsion (related to its trace) is a gauge field for the Weyl group, which allows the interpretation of the torsion as an electromagnetic field. In the gauge of constant scalar field we obtain Chiral Gravity coupled t…
In this paper, we study the one-loop induced photon's effective action in the very special relativity electrodynamics in $(2+1)$ spacetime (VSR-QED$_{3}$). Due to the presence of new nonlocal couplings resulting from the VSR gauge symmetry, we have additional graphs contributing to the $\langle AA\rangle$ and $\langle AAA \rangle$ amplitudes. From these contributions, we discuss the VSR generalization of the Abelian Maxwell-Chern-Simons Lagrangian, consisting in the dynamical part and the Chern-Simons-like self-couplings, respectively. We use the VSR-Chern-Simons electrodynamics to discuss som…
In this paper we consider some new classical effects obtained for a planar electrodynamics with the presence of a higher order derivatives term. The model can be interpreted as a kind of extension for the $3d$ Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics with higher order derivatives. We consider setups with stationary field sources describing point-like charges and Dirac points. We also investigate this model with the presence of a conducting line (in $3d$ dimensions, it is the equivalent of a conducting plate in $4d$ dimensions). In this case we calculate the propagator for the gauge field and the i…
In three dimensional Maxwell-Chern-Simons massless scalar electrodynamics with $ ϕ^6$ coupling, the $U(1)$ symmetry is spontaneously broken at two loop order regardless of the presence or absence of the Maxwell term. Dimensional transmutation takes place in pure Chern-Simons scalar electrodynamics. The beta function for the $ϕ^6$ coupling is independent of gauge couplings.
The electrodynamics with a Chern-Simons term $p_μA_ν\widetilde{F}^{μν}$ violates Lorentz and $CPT$ symmetries with a non-vanishing $p_μ$. For a fixed vector $p_μ$, in this paper we point out that the energy-momentum tensor of this theory coupled to the gravity minimally is symmetric but not divergence free, which consequently makes the gravitational field equation inconsistent. To preserve the consistency, we introduce a Chern-Simons term in the gravity sector with the coefficient determined by the Lorentz and $CPT$ violating term in the electromagnetic field. Further we study the phenomenolog…
We consider the problem of modeling of interaction of thin material films with fields of quantum electrodynamics. Taking into account the basic principles of quantum electrodynamics (locality, gauge invariance, renormalizability) we construct a single model for Casimir-like phenomena arising near the film boundary on distances much larger then Compton wavelength of the electron. In this region contribution of Dirac fields fluctuations are not essential and can be neglected. In the model the film is presented by a singular background field concentrated on a 2-dimensional surface and interacting…
