The recent measurement on the decay constant of $D_s$ shows a discrepancy between theory and experiment. We study the leptonic and semileptonic decays of $D$ and $D_s$ simultaneously within the standard model by employing a lightfront quark model. There is space by tuning phenomenological parameters which can explain the "$f_{D_s}$ puzzle" and do not contradict other experiments on the semileptonic decays. We also investigate the leptonic decays of D and $D_{s}$ with a new physics scenario, unparticle physics. The unparticle effects induce a constructive interference with the standard model contribution. The nontrivial phase in unparticle physics could produce direct CP violation which may distinguish it from other new physics scenarios.
Les We present a new perspective on the scalar meson puzzle from spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry beyond BCS. We find that going beyond BCS does not produce a systematic shift of the hadron spectrum. We also show that coupled channels reduce the breaking of chiral symmetry, with the same Feynman diagrams that appear in the coupling of a scalar meson to a pair of pseudoscalar mesons. With a Lattice QCD inspired quark-quark interaction, we find that the groundstate I=0, 3P0 quark antiquark meson is the f0(980) with a partial decay width of 40MeV. We also find a 30% reduction of the chiral…
The decays of $η$ and $η^\prime$ mesons provide unique opportunities for testing the properties of low energy Quantum Chromodynamics and for the search of new physics beyond the Standard Model. However, recent experimental results on the rare decays of $η^{\left(\prime\right)}\rightarrowπ^0\left(η\right)γγ$ cannot be self-consistently described by the combination of the Vector Meson Dominance and Linear Sigma Model employing the same set of parameters. We show that this tension can be attributed to the presence of a leptophobic dark photon $\mathcal{B}$, and find representative values of the p…
Recently, the standard model predictions for the $B$-meson hadronic decays, $\bar{B}^0 \to D^{(\ast)+}K^-$ and $\bar{B}^0_s \to D^{(\ast)+}_s π^-$, have been updated based on the QCD factorization approach. This improvement sheds light on a novel puzzle in the $B$-meson hadronic decays: there are mild but universal tensions between data and the predicted branching ratios. Assuming the higher-order QCD corrections are not huge enough to solve the tension, we examine several new physics interpretations of this puzzle. We find that the tension can be partially explained by a left-handed $W^\prime…
Recent measurements of the proton radius using the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen are troublingly discrepant with values extracted from hydrogen spectroscopy and electron-proton scattering experiments. This discrepancy, which differs by more than five standard deviations, may be a signal of new physics caused by a violation of lepton universality. Another candidate for a new physics signal is the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The measurement at BNL differs from the standard model prediction by at least three standard deviations. Motivated by these two puzzles, first we use polarized lepton-nu…
The experimental observation indicates that the branching ratio of $ψ'\to ρπ$ is very small while the $ρ-π$ channel is a main one in $J/ψ$ decays. To understand the puzzle, various interpretations have been proposed. Meanwhile according to the hadronic helicity selection rule the decay mode $J/ψ\toρπ$ should be suppressed, but definitely, numerical computation is needed to determine how it is suppressed. We calculate the branching ratios corresponding to subprocesses $J/ψ\to ggg\toρπ$ and $\to ggg\toππ$ in the framework of QCD. The results show that the branching ratios are proportional to $({…
I briefly review the conceptual developments that led to the Standard Model and discuss some of its remarkable qualitative features. On the way, I draw attention to several puzzling aspects that are beyond the reach of our present understanding of the basic laws of physics.
Anomalies in semi-leptonic $B$ decays could indicate new physics beyond the standard model(SM). There is an older puzzle in non-leptonic $B \to πK$ decays. The new particles, leptoquarks and diquarks, required to solve the semi-leptonic and the non-leptonic puzzles can also generate neutrino masses and mixing at loop level. We show that a consistent framework to explain the $B$ anomalies and the neutrino masses is possible and we make predictions for certain rare nonleptonic $B$ decays.
We introduce coupled channels of Bethe-Salpeter mesons both in the boundstate equation for mesons and in the mass gap equation for chiral symmetry. Consistency is insured by the Ward Identities for axial currents, which preserve the Goldstone boson nature of the pion and prevents a systematic shift of the hadron spectrum. We study the decay of a scalar meson coupled to a pair of pseudoscalars. We also show that coupled channels reduce the breaking of chiral symmetry, with the same Feynman diagrams that appear in the coupling of a scalar meson to a pair of pseudoscalar mesons. Exact calculation…
Axion physics has received a boost with the recent claim of the PVLAS collaboration. Their results can be interpreted as due to a new axionlike particle but the CAST collaboration has not found trace of it. While the axionlike particle interpretation of the PVLAS signal is going to be probed by dedicated laboratory experiments, it is mandatory to find either alternatives to it or models in which the astrophysical bounds could be evaded. In this communication one of such models is presented. The new physics involved appears at a low energy scale $<$ eV.
Recent work in light flavour hadron physics is reviewed. In particular, I discuss the significance of the progress achieved with light dynamical quarks on the lattice for the effective low energy theory of QCD. Also, I draw attention to some puzzling results from NA48 and KTeV concerning the scalar form factor relevant for Kmu3 decay -- taken at face value, these indicate physics beyond the Standard Model.
The measured $B_d \to π^0π^0$ branching fraction deviates significantly from conventional QCD predictions, a puzzle which has persisted for more than 10 years. This may be a hint of new physics beyond the Standard Model; however, as we shall show in this paper, the pQCD prediction is highly sensitive to the choice of the renormalization scales which enter the decay amplitude. In the present paper, we show that the renormalization scale uncertainties for $B\to ππ$ can be greatly reduced by applying the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC), and more precise predictions for CP-averaged branchi…
High-energy cosmic rays are observed indirectly by detecting the extensive air showers initiated in Earth's atmosphere. The interpretation of these observations relies on accurate models of air shower physics, which is a challenge and an opportunity to test QCD under extreme conditions. Air showers are hadronic cascades, which eventually decay into muons. The muon number is a key observable to infer the mass composition of cosmic rays. Air shower simulations with state-of-the-art QCD models show a significant muon deficit with respect to measurements; this is called the Muon Puzzle. The origin…
The status of solutions to the ultra-high energy cosmic ray puzzle that involve particle physics beyond the standard model is reviewed. Signatures and experimental constraints are discussed for most proposals like the Z burst model and topological defects (both allowed only as subdominant contribution), supermassive dark matter (no positive evidence from its key signatures galactic anisotropy and photon dominance), strongly interacting neutrinos or new primaries (no viable models known), and violation of Lorentz invariance (possible).
we calculate the new physics contributions to seven measured decays $B \to π^+ π^-, K π$ and $ K \etap$ in the general two-Higgs-doublet model (Model III). Within the considered parameter space, we find that: (a) the CLEO/BaBar measurement of $B\to π^+ π^-$ decay prefers a small $F_0^{Bπ}(0)$: $F_0^{Bπ}(0)=0.25 \pm 0.03$; (b) the new physics enhancements to the penguin-dominated $B \to Kπ$ and $B\to K \etap$ decays are significant in size, $\sim (40-70)%$ $w.r.t$ the standard model predictions; and (c) the new physics enhancements can boost the branching ratios ${\cal B}(B \to K^+ \etap)$ and …
We study $B \to K^* ρ$ modes that are analogues of the much studied $B\to K π$ modes with B decaying to two vector mesons instead of pseudoscalar mesons, using topological amplitudes in the quark diagram approach. We show how $B \to K^*ρ$ modes can be used to obtain many more observables than those for $B \to K π$ modes, even though the quark level subprocesses of both modes are exactly the same. All the theoretical parameters (except for the weak phase $γ$), such as the magnitudes of the topological amplitudes and their strong phases, can be determined in terms of the observables without any …
We discuss the theoretical interpretation of the $B\toπK$ system in the light of new data. Using the branching ratio and direct CP asymmetry of $B^0_d\toπ^-K^+$, the picture of the direct CP violation in $B_d^0\toπ^+π^-$ could be clarified: we predict $A_{CP}^{dir}(B_d\toπ^+π^-)=-0.24\pm0.04$, which favours the BaBar measurement, and extract $γ=(70.0^{+3.8}_{-4.3})^\circ$, in agreement with the Standard-Model fits of the unitarity triangle. All $B\toπK$ modes with colour-suppressed electroweak penguin contributions are found in excellent agreement with the Standard Model. The data for the rati…
Using the low energy effective Hamiltonian with the generalized factorization, we calculate the new physics contributions to $B \to π^+ π^-, K π$ and $K \etap$ in the Topcolor-assisted-Technicolor(TC2) model, and compare the results with the available data. By using $F_0^{\rm Bπ}(0)=0.20\pm 0.04$ preferred by the CLEO data of $B \to π^+ π^-$ decay, we find that the new physics enhancements to $B \to K \etap$ decays are significant in size, $\sim 50%$ with respect to the standard model predictions, insensitive to the variations of input parameters and hence provide a simple and plausible new ph…
Apart from offering explanations not only for the distinctive fermion mass and mixing patterns but also for the actual values of the mass and mixing parameters, the dual colour solution to the generation puzzle gives numerous detailed predictions ranging from rare FCNC meson decays and $μ$-$e$ conversions in nuclei at low energies to cosmic ray air showers with energies beyond $10^{20}$ eV at the extreme end of the experimental range. Besides, it predicts a new class of flavour-violating phenomena (called transmutations) due to the rotating fermion mass matrix which are unambiguously calculabl…
Whether in the Standard Model or beyond it, neutrinos contribute to the invisible decay mode of orthopositronium but practically not at all to that of parapositronium. Although this remark does not resolve the orthopositronium decay puzzle, it allows for upper bounds to be set on neutrino magnetic moments.
Discrepancies from in-beam and in-bottle type experiments measuring the neutron lifetime are on the 4$σ$ standard deviation level. In a recent publication Fornal and Grinstein proposed that the puzzle could be solved if the neutron would decay on the one percent level via a dark decay mode, one possible branch being $n \rightarrow χ+ e^+ e^-$. With data from the \perkeoII experiment we set limits on the branching fraction and exclude a one percent contribution for $95\,\%$ of the allowed mass range for the dark matter particle.
$W$ boson pair production processes at $e^+e^-$ and $pp$ colliders have been conventionally interpreted as measurements of $WWZ$ and $WWγ$ triple gauge couplings (TGCs). Such interpretation is based on the assumption that new physics effects other than anomalous TGCs are negligible. While this "TGC dominance assumption" was well-motivated and useful at LEP2 thanks to precision electroweak constraints, it is already challenged by recent LHC data. In fact, contributions from anomalous $Z$ boson couplings that are allowed by electroweak precision data but neglected in LHC analyses, being enhanced…
We introduce the new concept of binary particle as the basic matter unit that participates in weak interactions and not any one fermion singly. We state the quantum numbers of this binary particle, and show the concept leads us to a natural explanation of the standard model puzzle of the origin of flavor mixing and the CKM matrix. Certain other puzzles of the standard model such as the absence of flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC), are also explained naturally by the binary particle model. These puzzles are currently thought to be esoteric properties of electro weak interactions that have…
In leading twist deep inelastic $ep$ scattering, the virtual photon interaction is fast compared to the time scale of soft color rearrangement. We compare the Pomeron exchange model, in which a neutral cluster is preformed, with a gluon exchange model, in which color is exchanged after the hard interaction. We find several features of the DIS data and of data on exclusive hard processes that favor a gluon exchange scenario. If correct, the postulate of soft color interactions between the produced ($q\bar q$) system and the target has important implications for other processes. In particular, t…
This is a written version of a series of lectures aimed at graduate students in particle theory/string theory/particle experiment familiar with the basics of the Standard Model. We explain the many reasons for the interest in flavour physics. We describe flavour physics and the related CP violation within the Standard Model, and explain how the B-factories proved that the Kobayashi-Maskawa mechanism dominates the CP violation that is observed in meson decays. We explain the implications of flavour physics for new physics. We emphasize the "new physics flavour puzzle". As an explicit example, w…
It is proposed to clear some of the puzzles of B decay to the broad $\bar{D}^{\ast\ast}$ states by studying the corresponding decay with strange states $B_s^0 \to D_{s0}^{\ast -} π^+$ at LHCb. Interpretation of the results should be easier due to the narrowness of the $D_{s0}^{\ast -}$ state.
We have analyzed the ${\bar B}^0\to π^0π^0$ puzzle in three kinds of models beyond the standard model (SM). It is shown that the minimal flavor violation (MFV) models, the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), and the two Higgs doublet models (2HDM) I and II can not give an explanation of the ${\bar B}^0\to π^0π^0$ puzzle within $1 σ$ experimental bounds and the model III 2HDM can explain the puzzle without a conflict with other experimental measurements. If the constraint on $C_{8g}$ from $b\to s g$ is not imposed, for all kinds of insertions considered there are regions of parameter …
The inclusive decay rate into pions of the charmed $D_s$ meson is surprisingly larger than estimates expected from the $W$ annihilation, adopting commonly used values of current-algebra up and down quark masses. We then go beyond this tree diagram and consider possible QCD effects that might cause such a large rate. There are two; the first one is related to the spectator decay $ c{\bar s} \rightarrow s{\bar s} + u {\bar d}$ followed by $ s {\bar s} \rightarrow d{\bar d}~,~ u{\bar u}$ via two-gluon exchange box diagram. The second one is a gluon emission in weak annihilation for which the usua…
We provide updated predictions for the hadronic decays $\bar{B}_s^0\to D_s^{(*)+} π^-$ and $\bar{B}^0\to D^{(*)+} K^-$. They are based on $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$ results for the QCD factorization amplitudes at leading power and on recent results for the $\bar{B}_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}^{(*)}$ form factors up to order ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD}^2/m_c^2)$ in the heavy-quark expansion. We give quantitative estimates of the matrix elements entering the hadronic decay amplitudes at order ${\cal O}(Λ_{\rm QCD}/m_b)$ for the first time. Our results are very precise, and uncover a substantial discrepancy between th…

The modern Standard cosmological model of inflationary Unvierse and baryosynthesis deeply involves particle theory beyond the Standard model (BSM). Inevitably, models of BSM physics lead to cosmological scenarios beyond the Standard cosmological paradigm. Scenarios of dark atom cosmology in the context of puzzles of direct and indirect dark matter searches, of clusters of massive primordial black holes as the source of gravitational wave signals and of antimatter globular cluster as the source of cosmic antihelium are discussed.

Recent measurements of semileptonic B-meson decays seemingly imply violations of lepton flavor universality beyond the Standard Model predictions. With three-level explanations based on extended Higgs sectors being strongly challenged by the measurements of the $B_c^-$ lifetime, new theories invoking leptoquark or vector fields appear as the only feasible answer. However, in this work we show that simple scalar extensions of the Standard Model still offer a possible solution to the $B$ physics puzzle, owing to sizeable loop-level corrections which mimic the effects of new vector contributions.…
We bring together different puzzles in physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Within our model baryogenesis, neutrino mass, strong CP and dark matter puzzles are related. The common ingredient in connecting these puzzles is the Kalb-Ramond field, a two form present in the gravitational multiplet in the theory of closed strings. Leptons are fermions which we need to couple to gravitational degrees of freedom using a vierbein formalism. The presence of torsion provided by a Kalb-Ramond background leads us to firstly an effective model involving the Einstein-Cartan formulation of …
Very recently the BaBar collaboration has put forward a claim that the X(3872) is not a 1^++ resonance, as most of the phenomenological work on the subject was relying on, but rather a 2^-+ one. We examine the consequences of this quantum number assignment for the solution of the X(3872) puzzle. The molecular interpretation appears less likely, and the conventional charmonium interpretation should be reconsidered. There are several well-known difficulties with this interpretation, to which we add a new one: the production cross section at CDF is predicted to be much smaller than that observed.…
We explore the possibility that the observed pattern of quark masses is the consequence of a statistical distribution of Yukawa couplings within the multiverse. We employ the anthropic condition that only two ultra light quarks exist, justifying the observed richness of organic chemistry. Moreover, the mass of the recently discovered Higgs boson suggests that the top Yukawa coupling lies near the critical condition where the electroweak vacuum becomes unstable, leading to a new kind of flavor puzzle and to a new anthropic condition. We scan Yukawa couplings according to distributions motivated…
The Standard-Model interpretation of the ratios of charged and neutral B-> pi K rates, R_c and R_n, respectively, points towards a puzzling picture. Since these observables are affected significantly by colour-allowed electroweak (EW) penguins, this ``B -> pi K puzzle'' could be a manifestation of new physics in the EW penguin sector. Performing the analysis in the R_n-R_c plane, which is very suitable for monitoring various effects, we demonstrate that we may, in fact, move straightforwardly to the experimental region in this plane through an enhancement of the relevant EW penguin parameter q…
We propose a scenario in which a simple power-like primary spectrum for protons with sources at cosmological distances leads to a quantitative description of all the details of the observed cosmic ray spectrum for energies from 10^{17} eV to 10^{21} eV. As usual, the ultrahigh energy protons with energies above E_{GZK} ~ 4 x 10^{19} eV loose a large fraction of their energies by the photoproduction of pions on the cosmic microwave background, which finally decay mainly into neutrinos. In our scenario, these so-called cosmogenic neutrinos interact with nucleons in the atmosphere through Standar…
The problem of understanding quark mass and mixing hierarchies has been an outstanding problem of particle physics for a long time. The discovery of neutrino masses in the past decade, exhibiting mixing and mass patterns so very different from the quark sector has added an extra dimension to this puzzle. This is specially difficult to understand within the framework of conventional grand unified theories which are supposed to unify the quarks and leptons at short distance scales. In the paper, I discuss a recent proposal by Dutta, Mimura and this author that appears to provide a promising way …
Neutrinos are one of the major puzzles in modern physics. Despite measurements of mass differences, the Standard Model of particle physics describes them as exactly massless. Additionally, recent measurements from both particle physics experiments and cosmology indicate the existence of more than the three Standard Model species. Here we review the cosmological evidence and its possible interpretations.
This book provides a thorough survey of the important questions at the interface between theoretical particle physics and cosmology. After discussing the theoretical and experimental physics revolution that led to the rise of the Standard Model in the past century, this volume reviews all major open puzzles, like the hierarchy problem, the small value of the cosmological constant, the matter-antimatter asymmetry, or the dark matter problem, and presents the state-of-the-art in the proposed solutions, with an extensive bibliography. This manuscript emphasises the fields of thermal dark matter, …
The pure penguin process $B\to ϕK^*$ is one of the most important probes of physics beyond the Standard Model. Recently BaBar and Belle have measured the unexpectedly large transverse polarization in the decays $B\to ϕK^*$, which may single out new physics effects beyond the Standard model. We study the possibility that the phenomenon could serve as an important probe of anomalous tensor interactions. We find that a spin flipped tensor interaction with a small strength and a phase could give a possible solution to the polarization puzzle.
Astrophysics and cosmology can be used to test the standard model of particle physics under conditions and over distance and time scales not accessible to laboratory experiments. Most of the astrophysical observations are in good agreement with the standard model. In particular, primordial nucleosynthesis, supernova explosions, stellar evolution and cosmic background radiations have been used to derive strong limits on physics beyond the standard model. However, the solution of some important astrophysical and cosmological problems may require new physics beyond the standard model. These inclu…
We perform a systematic study of various versions of massive gravity with and without violation of Lorentz symmetry in arbitrary dimension. These theories are well known to possess very unusual properties, unfamiliar from studies of gauge and Lorentz invariant models. These peculiarities are caused by mixing of familiar transverse fields with revived longitudinal and pure gauge (Stueckelberg) fields and are all seen already in quadratic approximation. They are all associated with non-trivial dispersion laws, which easily allow superluminal propagation, ghosts, tachyons and essential irrational…
Mirror matter is predicted to exist if parity (i.e. left-right symmetry) is a symmetry of nature. Remarkably mirror matter is capable of simply explaining a large number of contemporary puzzles in astrophysics and particle physics including: Explanation of the MACHO gravitational microlensing events, the existence of close-in extrasolar gas giant planets, apparently `isolated' planets, the solar, atmospheric and LSND neutrino anomalies, the orthopositronium lifetime anomaly and perhaps even gamma ray bursts. One fascinating possibility is that our solar system contains small mirror matter spac…
