We present homogeneous $V,I$ CCD photometry of nine stellar fields in the two inner quadrants of the Galactic plane. The lines-of-view to most of these fields aim in the direction of the very inner Galaxy, where the Galactic field is very dense, and extinction is high and patchy. Our nine fields are, according to several catalogs, centred on Galactic star clusters, namely Trumpler 13, Trumpler 20, Lynga 4, Hogg 19, Lynga 12, Trumpler 25, Trumpler 26, Ruprecht 128, and Trumpler 34. Apart from their coordinates, and in some cases additional basic data (mainly from the 2MASS archive), their properties are poorly known. By means of star count techniques and field star decontaminated Color-Magnitude diagrams, the nature and size of these visual over-densities has been established; and, when possible, new cluster fundamental parameters have been derived. To strengthen our findings, we complement our data-set with JHK$_{s}$ photometry from the 2MASS archive, that we analyze using a suitably defined Q-parameter. Most clusters are projected towards the Carina-Sagittarium spiral arm. Because of that, we detect in the Color Magnitude Diagrams of most of the other fields several distinctive sequences produced by young population within the arm. All the clusters are of intermediate or old age. The most interesting cases detected by our study are, perhaps, that of Trumpler 20, which seems to be much older than previously believed, as indicated by its prominent -and double- red clump; and that of Hogg 19, a previously overlooked old open cluster, whose existence in such regions of the Milky Way is puzzling.
Apparently similar but multifaceted photometric systems are currently being used to investigate the multiple stellar populations in globular clusters, without the concrete general agreement on the definition of the multiple populations. In recent years, an attractive idea of utilization of the widely used UBI photometry, C_{UBI}, for the populational tagging of the giant stars in globular clusters has been emerged. We perform a critical analysis of the cn_{JWL} and the C_{UBI} indices, finding that the populational tagging from the C_{UBI} index may not be reliable, due to the inherited trait …
We present wide-field, ground-based Johnson-Cousins UBVRI photometry for 48 Galactic globular clusters based on almost 90000 public and proprietary images. The photometry is calibrated with the latest transformations obtained in the framework of our secondary standard project, with typical internal and external uncertainties of order a few millimagnitudes. These data provide a bridge between existing small-area, high-precision HST photometry and all sky-catalogues from large surveys like Gaia, SDSS, or LSST. For many clusters, we present the first publicly available photometry in some of the f…
We present new large field-of-view ($\sim$1°$\times$1°) Ca-CN photometry of the prototypical metal-rich globular cluster 47 Tucanae (NGC 104). Our results are the following. (1) The populational number ratios of the red giant branch (RGB) and red horizontal branch (RHB) are in excellent agreement: n(CN-w):n(CN-s) = 30:70 ($\pm$1--2), where the CN-w and CN-s stand for the CN-weak and CN-strong populations, respectively. Both the CN-s RGB and RHB populations are more centrally concentrated than those of CN-w populations are. (2) Our photometric metallicities of individual RGB stars in each popul…
We present Ca-CN-CH-NH photometry for the well-known globular cluster (GC) M3 (NGC 5272). We show new evidence for two M3 populations with distinctly different carbon and nitrogen abundances, seen in a sharp division between CN-weak and CN-strong red-giant branches (RGBs) in M3. The CN-strong population shows a C-N anticorrelation that is a natural consequence of the CN cycle, while the CN-weak population shows no or a weak C-N anticorrelation. Additionally, the CN-weak population exhibits an elongated spatial distribution that is likely linked to its fast rotation. Our derived metallicity rev…
We present a multiple stellar population (MSP) study of the globular cluster (GC) NGC~6752. We show that our new photometric CN index accurately traces the CN and the nitrogen abundances in cool giants, finding the discrete double red giant branch (RGB) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) sequences with number ratios between the CN-weak and the CN-strong populations of \nrgb\ = 25:75 ($\pm$3; RGB) and 79:21 ($\pm$13; AGB). The discrepancy in these number ratios suggests that a significant fraction of the low-mass \cns\ stars failed to evolve into the AGB phase. However, unlike previous studies, …
We introduce new color indices $cn^\prime_{\rm JWL}$ (= $Ca_{\rm CTIO} - Ca_{\rm JWL}$) and $ch_{\rm JWL}$ [=$(JWL43 - b) - (b-y)$], accurate photometric measures of the CN band at $λ$3883 and the CH G band, respectively, in the study of the multiple populations (MPs) in globular clusters (GCs). Our photometric CN--CH relation for a large number of red-giant branch (RGB) in M5 shows that the evolutions of the CN and CH between the CN-w and CN-s populations are not continuous. Armed with our new color indices, we investigate the MPs of NGC 6723, finding the RGB populational number ratio of $n$(…
The Gemini/HST Galaxy Cluster Project (GCP) covers 14 z=0.2-1.0 clusters with X-ray luminosity of L_500 >= 10^44 ergs/s in the 0.1-2.4 keV band. In this paper we provide homogeneously calibrated X-ray luminosities, masses and radii, and we present the complete catalog of the ground-based photometry for the GCP clusters. The clusters were observed with Gemini North or South in three or four of the optical passbands g', r', i' and z'. The photometric catalog includes consistently calibrated total magnitudes, colors, and geometrical parameters. The photometry reaches ~25 mag in the passband close…
The extreme extinction ($A_V\sim30$\,mag) and its variation on arc-second scales towards the Galactic centre hamper the study of its stars. Their analysis is restricted to the near infrared (NIR) regime, where the extinction curve can be approximated by a broken power law. Therefore, correcting for extinction is fundamental to analyse the structure and stellar population of the central regions of our Galaxy. We aim to, (1) discuss different strategies to de-redden the photometry and check the usefulness of extinction; (2) build extinction maps for the NIR bands $JHK_s$ and make them publicly a…
S-CANDELS: The Spitzer-Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Survey. Survey Design, Photometry, and Deep IRAC Source Counts
The inner regions of the Galaxy are severely affected by extinction, which limits our capability to study the stellar populations present there. The Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) ESO Public Survey has observed this zone at near-infrared wavelengths where reddening is highly diminished. By exploiting the high resolution and wide field-of-view of the VVV images we aim to produce a deep, homogeneous, and highly complete database of sources that cover the innermost regions of our Galaxy. To better deal with the high crowding in the surveyed areas, we have used point spread function (PSF)…

An accurate and precise Kepler Stellar Properties Catalog is essential for the interpretation of the Kepler exoplanet survey results. Previous Kepler Stellar Properties Catalogs have focused on reporting the best-available parameters for each star, but this has required combining data from a variety of heterogeneous sources. We present the Gaia-Kepler Stellar Properties Catalog, a set of stellar properties of 186,301 Kepler stars, homogeneously derived from isochrones and broadband photometry, Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes, and spectroscopic metallicities, where available. Our photometric eff…
